We were celebrating our anniversary, and managed to book a same day reservation for 4:30 (I think they were booked the rest of the night which was expected for a Saturday. Since we were planning on going to the Drive in movies, an early dinner time was perfect for us (keep in mind this is also early December). It was nice and quiet, atmosphere was nice. They were attentive to serveware, making sure to change it out depending on courses served. Beverages were refilled promptly. Service was excellent. I like that the owners have been here for awhile and you can feel confident that your food will be well prepared and presented. I liked that there was a non dairy option as there were a lot of menu items that had a lot of cream or dairy, I wish there had been more options. I don't eat lamb but I hear that is another popular choice. I dont know that I would come back personally because I wasn't blown away by the dishes I had (see below), but there really weren't a lot of other choices on the menu if you have an issue with dairy like me. However I would recommend it to others who dont have my issues with dairy. For the start of our meal, (and not pictured) were the garlic ribs appetizer (comes as 4 ribs which I shared, it was lightly garlicky with dry garlic bits and the berry sauce was really unique), and the Caesar salad (which my husband said was perfect, aside from the olive cracker they served with it, but we are not olive fans). We were served bread slices from a local bakery (bread was dense, but I appreciate the shout out and support of a local business) and it came with a scoop of beet hummous in olive oil (it was ok, but not my favorite, but better than olive hummous which I have read they have served in the past). It looked pretty. The New York Strip Steak was cooked perfectly medium rare. Husband said it was fine, nothing negative to say about it. He feels he has made better sauce at home, but there was nothing bad about the sauce either. My daughter enjoyed her Smoked Pork shank and gnocchi carbonara, lots of protein on that bone. I can't comment on the taste but she finished it all and seemed to like it well enough. My dish was the Chicken & Southern Cast Iron Spoon bread. The chicken had a nice crunch but not a lot of flavor so that is what the honey was for (I read that it is a truffle honey butter, but I didnt really care for the flavor, I think I might have preferred a spicy honey or straight up plain honey). The spoon cake I thought was going to be like a cornbread but it was more like a dense eggy quiche with peppers in it. The pickled peppers on the side and the simple slaw were a nice accompaniment, the flavor of the slaw actually was the most memorable and tasty of everything on my plate. I didnt finish my dish tho, I took 3/4ths of it home, and have yet to be inspired to finish it. I feel like something was missing - all the elements were there (crunch, sweet, tang), but it was missing something, and I can't quite put my finger on it. The desserts were nicely presented and were nice for what they were. The creme brule had a crispy slice of dehydrated pineapple which was unique but didnt really have a lot of flavor (which was too bad), but it did add another layer of texture. The server was nice and plated the icecream from my dish in a separate dish for my daughter. Daughter said the ice cream had a caramel flavor? The Almond cake was ok, not too sweet, and the poached pear was a typical poached pear (it is nice to have tho since this is not something I would make at home myself). I felt the toffee crumbles and caramel smear were an odd addition and didnt really lend itself to the dish (but my daughter took to put on top of her ice cream). I think a cranberry or cherry sauce/ice cream would have been nicer than the caramel/toffee, to give the two blander items a bit of zing and tie in the fruit with the cake, as well as add color instead of from the singular strawberry. The caramel/toffee added sweet and contrast in textures but didnt really compliment well. I find almond pairs so nicely with tart berries like cranberries or cherries, maybe add more chocolate as well to add crunch. But this is just my perception (and suggestion, to make this something I would want to come back for), I am sure many others would disagree. Personal preferences and "how it has always been done". I really get the impression that they are really into textures and balance with their dishes, so I hope they appreciate that I noticed. I would definately recommend for a date night, birthday or anniversary celebration. I dont know what other options there are in this town, but my husband and daughter were very impressed with a local mexican restaurant here as well, so it seems that Whidby Island is a good place to check out good food and great service! The atmosphere is understated and mostly comfortable. The seats my wife and I were seated in needed to be replaced as they had no padding left. We were warmly greeted when we entered. We were promptly seated at a table next to the entry area but separated. Our table did not have an outside view but was just fine. The table had new white tablecloth covering that were crisp and clean. Menu's and wine list were already on the table so we could start looking at what was available. They keep their website updated so I knew what we had available. Our server came over and greeted us and offered the daily featured food items not on the printed menu. We chose the crab cake's appetizer to start with and the rack of lamb and the scallops for our entrees. We were given a black bean and olive humus with 2 pieces of bread. Different and good. The staff was prompt to take away any dishes that had been finished so the table stayed clear. Our dinners came out in a timely manner after we had finished our appetizer. The scallops were cooked to perfection. They came with vegetable risotto which was slightly under cooked. The flavors were excellent. The rack of lamb was done to a perfect mid rare and came with a delicious garlic mash. Both entries were well seasoned and so we did not have to ask for salt and pepper. Pretty much a first for my wife and I. We finished off our birthday dinner with smooth dark coffee and a flourless chocolate cake and crème brûlée. The cake was excellent with beautiful dark chocolate flavors. The brûlée was very smooth and great flavor. The only thing I would change is the caramalized sugar was to thick and thus heated the beautiful custard below. But my measurement is on the texture of the custard and it was spot on! Overall I would give them 8 out of 10. We will be back! read more

We loved this cute gem in Oak Harbor. Oak Harbor has a tiny downtown, so we weren't really sure what to expect. The building is cute, with peek a boo views of the water. The staff was really nice, I felt like a guest at someone's house. The food was amazing! From my Manhattan drink to the spring salad, appetizer of garlic ribs, to the scallop risotto. I checked its website prior to our arrival and found a Friday-only happy hour listed. Coupled with reviews stating martinis were 1/2 priced, we decided to partake. On entering we waited at the hostess station until an employee arrived and explained we would be partaking of a few happy hour beverages. She consulted her reservations book and led us to a white tableclothed table set for 4 in the vacant dining room. We asked a server bearing menus and water if we might be allowed to relocate to the empty bar, but were told it had been reserved. We were also told appetizers and drinks were not 2/1, but 30% off during happy hour. I wanted a more relaxed atmosphere so we departed without ordering anything. Had we had more time in Oak Harbor, we would have likely returned for dinner. So when I say they're PHENOMENAL - I'm basing it on a LOT of experience, in some of the BEST Food Cities in this country. I'm 70 - so have been traveling a long time. Finding a Restaurant that makes a TRUE Caesar Salad (invented in Tijuana, Mexico in the 1940's) - is heaven to me. EVERYTHING is cooked to PERFECTION - TENDER, etc. The little changes/nuances that Scott (Owner/Chef) puts into his foods - wow. And a GREAT choice of alcoholic beverages - all fairly priced. Had a reservation and was sat closest to the door near the restroom. For fine dining the service was a miss. From delays in serving actual food, only clearing dishes to make space for new ones, and lack of communication when removing plates with food still on it. Guests were served ahead of us and bigger parties came and went before we were done with entrees. There's just an expectation that you pay an exorbitant amount of money for food and you receive a higher quality service than an Applebees. Now for the food part the appetizers were nice. Dry garlic ribs, tomato with burrata, and the Fondue were the highlight of the night. The entrees were hit or miss. Scallops were nice and light with a delightful sauce and risotto. The gnocchi carbonara is lacking the normal flavor profile and characteristics from what a carbonara is. And the seafood lasagna was dry and bland. Dessert was also hit or miss. Crème brûlée was not cold, tasted bitter, and had the consistency of a potato salad. The cheesecake tasted like it was very much made in house and served with a lovely raspberry sauce. And there was a fruit dessert served in a mini tostada (the name escapes me) that just did not do its job. Overall I do see the allure of this place but I do think the price to eat food here does not correlate with the attention you receive or the flavor of the food or even the formal place setting of the table. It was worth a shot as this is known as the best spot in Oak Harbor but I have to scrutinize based on hype and the price. read more

WOW! Simply the best meal I have ever had! We stopped here last minute for our 5 yr anniversary as our reserved plans didn't work out. We didn't have a reservation but they were able to seat us at the bar overlooking the kitchen. I really enjoyed watching the chef's work, it was a lot of fun seeing the hustle and bustle going on. With Chef Fraser manning the helm, everything looked to be working smoothly. Hubby had the pork chop and I had the seafood fettuccini. WOW again, I have never tasted a pork chop that tasted that good and whatever sauce they had with it was amazing. My fettuccini was delicious, I don't even like scallops and I gobbled them down. I think this is the first time I have never "seasoned" a pasta dish with salt either. Chef Fraser came out to check on everything as we were getting to leave, which I thought was neat.
