Updating from 1 star. I personally had a bad experience here, but the owner and artist did reach out and made it a little better. If you want ink on your hands, I'd recommend calling ahead to make sure there's someone that is willing to do it. Also, it's always your responsibility what ends up on your body - always comb your draft with a fine tooth comb before needle hits skin (especially when spelling is involved) Removing that, for a walk in, I do love what I was able to get. He whipped up an nice arrow with a lotus flower fletching and semicolon worked in. read more

Love this shop. I had planned an appointment with a tattoo artist elsewhere two weeks prior who didn't acknowledge my design needs and told me I needed to "rely on her trust and style to give me what I wanted" - 2 weeks passed by and then she cancelled on me day of and took my $100 deposit anyway. I ended up getting a "peek" at the design later (even though she didn't ever want to send me a proof because of "trust") and the design was nothing at all what I wanted. Needless to say, I was crushed. AND THENNNNN, I found this shop day of and walked right in. Mira whipped up my design in minutes and we were done in a half hour. 4 days later... and I'm healing perfectly and happy. I will continue to come to this shop and avoid the trouble with other Portland artists who feel their ego's and style's are more important than their customers needs. Thank you Freaks and Geeks. After feeling frustrated by the pretentious artists that abound in Portland, F&G is a breath of fresh air. Let me first say that it's super hard to find an accessible tattoo place in PDX; this one is great. It's a little difficult getting in and out (there's a weird bump at the door), but not too bad with an assist. It's a very welcoming space; big and open, lots of windows, nice and cool in the summer heat. Alana greeted me right away. During our consultation, she was attentive and we worked out what I wanted. She gave me a time estimate, told me her rate, and $40 booked my appointment (which she then applied to the final cost of my work). She takes cash only, so go prepared. I arrived early for my appointment, but Alana was set up and ready for me when I rolled through the door. We got started right away. I got three patches of mermaid scales on my legs; she started by free handing them in marker, making sure I liked the placement and size. When we settled on it, she got started. I found Alana to be very pleasant to work with; she's friendly and funny. We chatted off and on. She gave me space to breathe when it was really painful, but didn't just sit in silence the whole time. I enjoyed her company, which was especially nice in a 5-hour session. We went all the way through, even though I could tell her back was starting to get stiff toward the end. I'd specifically requested to get it all done in one sitting, as it's really difficult for me to get out and about, so she was extremely awesome to power through for me. She was super fantastic, and the tattoos are gorgeous. (I'll post a picture once they're healed, so stay tuned!) I felt considered and heard the entire time. She really listened to what I wanted, and worked with me to get it right with absolutely no hassle. I have many tattoos, and this was one of the best experiences I've ever had! Went to oregon for the first time and decided to get a tattoo as a tribute to the beautiful city of Oregon. And for some reason me and my family were drawn to Freaks and Geeks Tattoo Studio i got a Phoenix and my boy friend got wolverine claws with our sons name (his first tattoo). I'd been ichin' for some ink therapy for a while. I went to Gene (I have been seeing him for about 15 years now). He always does excellent work!! I am very happy with all the tattoos he has done for me! He's very personable, and has a wonderful sense of humor. I occasionally run into him at metal shows, and he always treats me as a friend, not a client. My Husband went with me this time, as he also wanted a new tattoo. That is when we met Devon. OMG, she is such a cutie, and a fellow metalhead. My Husband texted he the pic that he wanted, not really knowing the little details that is needed. This is a fantastic shop with a bit of an old-school sensibility. Gene did a koi tattoo on my forearm, and it rocks. I showed him a few ideas of what I was thinking, he drew up the art, and totally NAILED IT. The artwork here is great, the shop is very chill, but totally professional. For me, the best part (well, after the bitchin' tat, of course) was hanging out in the shop, talking with Jason and Gene. I was very pleased by the combination of professionalism and friendly service I experienced at Freaks and Geeks. I was treated with respect, but not in a sterile way. Rather, my opinions about the tattoo were respected and a good deal of time was spent in the 'consulting' phase - making sure my tattoo was customized exactly how I wanted it. There was no bullshit salesmanship or attitude. Jason (the owner) took a great personal interest in my tattoo. I told him that another client of his recommended that I come in to have a chat. Jason, being a smart guy who understands that a client recommendation is gold, was invested immediately. He took notes, asked questions, confirmed his understanding of my wants and needs. Basically, he made me confident that Freaks and Geeks was a place I would want to have work done. Some highlights: - The shop is clean, bright and welcoming. There is a good mix of music playing at a good listening level. The staff is friendly and banter back and forth quite a bit. Overall, a very positive vibe. - Jason was extremely organized and timely in his reponses and delivery on items we discussed. Initial tattoo drawings were completed on time, adjustments to preliminary design were completed on time. Jason answered all my emails within a very reasonable amount of time. - An extreme amount of care is taken in keeping work stations to a medical grade of clean. Everything wiped down, gloves are always worn, needles are removed from packaging and inspected with a magnifying glass. In watching his movements and how he can easily chat/joke with me, it is clear that this level of care is second nature to Jason- which put me at ease. - Jason is very aware of pain levels, impacts of his work on the physiology of his clients, etc. He employes conversation not only to be friendly, but as a means of distraction from work being done on sensitive areas. He is comfortable with taking breaks if you need a break or continuing to work if you don't. - Most importantly, the quality of the work is fantastic! Jason continued and completed a piece I had started years ago, but wasn't able to finish prior to my artist leaving the industry. The piece is seemless, beautiful and far superior to what I had expected. I know that there is very little chance anyone will read this review and, without knowing me, decide to just head on in to Freaks and Geeks and get some work done. However, I do hope this review will help influence people to at least check it out. Great shop, great people and really great work. read more

I always have tattoo ideas in my mind. I was thinking about something small, I was in the neighborhood and walked by and saw that they accepted walk-ins. I walked in and I saw a guy sitting at the counter. His name Jason, he asked what I was thinking about getting and of course I totally went blank. I was not sure he guided me to take a look at some of his work in his portfolios. As I skimmed through the pages nothing caught my eye. I was def interested in a tattoo I just did not know what I wanted. He gave me his card and told me to come back when I decided what I wanted. At first I thought "Damn..kinda rude" but its understandable because I did not know. How could he help me if I didn't know myself. I called 10 minutes later and told him I will go to a local coffee shop and come back. He said he was free after 4. I came back but it seemed as though someone else came in with a small tattoo. He asked if I could come back around 5:30pm. At first I was like alright I know what I want and it will be worth it. I came back and he was ready to get started. He explained to me that he needed to make the tattoo bigger to fit my arm and the words to fit and to look nice. Once he showed me the drawing and everything, it was perfect and I fell in love with it. He was a very interesting guy and obviously had years of experiences. We had a good conversation and he made me feel very comfortable while I was there. The next time I'm in Portland I will def come back to get another tattoo. read more

I got a simple line/dot tattoo of a sun and it really did not come out very clean at all. I'm pretty disappointed. Was glad they were able to take a walk-in and the place was clean and friendly, but the tattoo is staying forever and I wish it looked better. read more

In the time I was there two different people came in looking for very simplistic tattoos. Jason was the one they where talking too and he turned them down due to size or just because he didn't like it, stating that you get tattoos for other people and it wouldn't make sense to them with the tattoos they where getting. I should have done some research and prepared better for this tattoo. But as you can see from my picture, this tattoo is absolutely terrible. It is only my second tattoo ever and I rushed into it because I was visiting from out of town and wanted to do something special and spontaneous with my friend. However, tattoos really shouldn't be spontaneous. Go to a place where you are familiar with the artist's work. Of all things, I got a very basic sun tattooed on the side of my wrist. Small and dainty is what I was hoping for but the lines of my sun's rays have bled and also the sun is crooked. I have already scheduled an appointment for tattoo removal which costs around $150 per session and will take 5-6 sessions. This small tattoo, the size of a quarter, put me back $80.00 and I tipped $20 so I'm out $100.00. I wouldn't mind spending $100 on a tattoo if I liked it, or if the lines were even and straight. But alas, I guess a sun is a difficult design and now I'm stuck with this crooked, bleeding sun for God knows how long! Save yourself by doing your research before getting a permanent picture on your body or you'll hate yourself afterwards. Get to know your artist's work before hand. I would not recommend this parlor. read more

My tattoo artist left Portland and I had to ask around for a new artist. I heard from quite a few people that Jason was amazing, and the work I saw on my friends was outstanding. I went into the shop and discussed my plans for a sleeve and some other future ideas and he jumped right in with both feet. So far, he has drawn up exactly what I wanted, the tattoo at this point is amazing, no scaring, no scabbing, no ink coming out and he does not talk your ear off making you feel like prisoner. I think I have found the only artist that will be doing my work while I live in Portland. Got my first tattoo 3 years ago at the ripe young age of 58. It was the great Gene Hannan. I have since had 5 more. All from Gene. I followed him to this shop because I just couldn't see getting tattooed by anyone else. Freaks and geeks is a friendly, unpretentious shop, in a great neighborhood. I'm in the process of getting a piece done by Jason. He has been receptive to my input and drew up a bitchin' custom design for me. He knows that I was saving up for my tattoo and worked quickly and efficiently to get my outline done. He does quality (and award-winning) work. I did my research before settling on Freaks and Geeks, and I'm glad I did. He put me at ease and made me feel very comfortable before we started (this is my first big piece). I've never felt pressured to spend outside my budget or to get more than I want done. Even when we had to reschedule once he was accommodating and quick to respond. It's located in the awesome Alberta neighborhood with Anna Bananas conveniently located in the same building. I highly recommend Freaks and Geeks. I've told all my friends and family where to go for their next tattoo. Another perk is that the wait list isn't months-long. Honestly the worst experience for my first tattoo ever. About 2 years ago I went in because I really wanted one and I found an idea of what I liked. Literally got the worst attitude from Jason who did my tattoo. He was annoyed that I wanted a tattoo that I can hide. It's not his business as to why I need to hide it but he said that I shouldn't get a tattoo if I need to hide it... Very unprofessional. Sat through an hour of agony (first tattoo on my ribs) without a single break. Didn't even ask if I was doing okay. Didn't let my boyfriend sit next to me. Once the tattoo healed it had spots that he had not filled. Overall terrible experience for my first time and spent a lot of money on something that I'm not extremely happy with. Never going back. I just couldn't fathom the attitude that was radiating from Jason. Definitely didn't make me feel good about any of it. read more

I get compliments on my tattoo almost every day. I went to Freaks and Geeks for my first tattoo, and Jason the owner was my tattoo artist. He did a wonderful job, not only in the quality of the tattoo, but in the overall experience. I was super nervous and Jason was really nice and patient with me. I brought in a small drawing and a loose idea of what I wanted and he drew me the perfect thing! From the drawing he did it was obvious that he really understands design and fluidity. I didn't get to see what the color was going to look like which made me a little nervous. But the color turned out awesome and it's what I get most of the compliments on! I have been meaning to check out this shop since they opened a few months ago, as it is dangerously close to my house. I walked in last week to check out the artists' portfolios (which were all great!) and was greeted by Jason, the owner, who has to be one of the friendliest tattooers I have ever met. Lo and behold, lucky me, I had an appointment just a few days later! Jason is incredibly talented and knowledgeable. His background is in fine art, and it truly shows. His use of color and shading is amazing, and he has a way of expressing his opinion as an artist that I truly respect. After a grueling four hour session, I have a new piece that I am truly proud of (and Jason was a very good sport with my bitching and moaning!) The shop itself is small and well kept, nice and clean, with a lot of great custom flash on the walls and good lighting. Throughout my session several people popped in to say to Jason, which I thought was a good sign and gave the shop a great sense of community. I'll definitely be back. It's funny... when you select 5 stars on Yelp it pops up this small text that exclaims "WooHoo! As good as it gets!" Which is exactly how I feel about Jason's shop. As good as it gets. I've been looking for the right artist to continue my work for a long time. When I heard Jason Sweet was opening a new studio 2 blocks from my house and around the corner from my favorite bar I insisted on being his first tattoo in the studio. Since then we've done a total of 3 pieces. Jason is one of the chillest, nicest, and most helpful Tattoo Artists I've ever met. Oh, and his work is amazing. I am from Alaska and have most of my tattoos from a guy up there. I wanted to add to a tattoo I already had, so I emailed my tattoo guy in AK and he recommened Jason to me. I emailed Jason and told him I am in Corvallis and its hard to get to Portland just to talk about tattoos, would he be willing to email about it. He was amazing. He was so responsive and helped me right away. He was very honest about it all even if it wasnt what I wanted to hear. I came in a couple weeks later to have it done. He worked on me for 5 hours and was extremely professional. Not very talkitive because hes busy working away. He knows his stuff! Has tons of years of experince and it shows.
