Old school diner located at the Los Felix neighborhood. Lots of reviewers mentioned this place as open 24/7. It's probably the case before but yelp and Fred's website listed it as open from 7am-4am. That's still is seriously a pretty long business hours to serve the public. The place has indoor and outdoor seating. It's a popular restaurant so expect a wait to be seated. Lots of menu choices which include not only breakfast items but also burgers, noodles, plenty of Vegan, gluten free, and vegetarian options. They also offer Bottomless mimosa on weekends and Unlimited pancakes Tuesdays. I had the Grilled cheese crunch n' munch served with a side of tomato bisque soup. It's the perfect bread and cheese combo with potato chips inside. I love the crunch in every bite. It was even better when dipped on their signature F-bomb hot sauce. The soup was creamy and also had the perfect hint of sweetness and sourness into it. Overall, a great cafe with good food that's reasonably priced with a fun hipster-like atmosphere. Must I bust out the "Man vs Food" episode for you?! ------------------------------ So, this review has little to do with the retro restaurant decor, or the fact that it used to be open 24h (now closes at 3am). So imagine my disappointment when the burger arrived. I had a major case of ED (election disappointment). My friends, this was no juicy Lucy. The whole point of the juicy Lucy is to have the cheese INSIDE the patty, so when you bite into it, the liquid gold drips out of the core, like a Queen Anne cordial! This was just a... wait for it... burger. With lettuce, tomato, and cheese. It's like calling my Honda a Porsche just because both have four wheels, and I can (usually) smoke an inattentive Prius. Today, we had the chance to experience a real American diner spot! FRED62, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary! Congratulations The food tasted really good! This time, we went for the "Reasons to be Cheerful Chicken Sandwich" and "Fred's LA Burger," and we can recommend trying both. As sides, we chose the "Mac'n Cheese and fries." To finish off in the best way, we were recommended to try the famous milkshake from the menu, the "Oreo milkshake" and it definitely deserves a 10/10 The service was also very good, with the owner actively involved in the restaurant, greeting and welcoming guests. Delicious! I have been mostly plant based and dairy free for years now. So, I do not remember the last time I had a grilled cheese sandwich. I was THRILLED when I saw they had a plant based option on their menu! It tasted amazing. The wine and coffee was great too! Came back a couple of days later for breakfast and good food then also. Parking sucks, but otherwise tasty food with lots of options. The only thing I'd like to see added is vegan butter for the toast! I called to place a pickup order. After having been put on hold for over 10 minutes, I decided to get there and place my order at the counter. I am a server so I assumed they were busy...not really... So I asked if I could talk to a manager. the astonishing answer( with attitude , not even saying hi) from Roberto the manager was : " we don't take orders if you call and your phone number doesn't show..." Where is this policy written on your website or menu? If you're afraid the customer who ordered by phone won't show up ,then ask for a CC number when the order is placed? My girlfriend and I were getting in late over the weekend, and stopped by Fred 62 for takeout since it was the only place open. We're really glad we did! They have really expanded their vegan menu, and both items we got were fantastic! She got the Katie's Burrito which was delicious, and I got the Vegan Pork Burrito which was one of best things I've had in awhile! Beverages: Arnold Palmers. Overall, the food looked really yum, but again, look at what you have after removing the make up? Her soup was good, simple & pureed. It could have used a bit more ginger , imo. We shared the nachos, they were heavy, but I love black beans, overall, not that much flavor . I guess I like spicy salsas & hot sauces.My salad was just ok. Waaay too many crutons ! It came dressed, nice touch would have been dressing on the side or if our server was more engaging & aware. The Ceasar dressing could have been ranch, it was so bland. We felt very comfortable here , being LGBTQIA. We dined across from a young lesbian couple & a Trans sister had the booth across . I've been here twice and have sat on the patio (sidewalk tables next to the building). This place deserves five stars for the chili alone...any other things which may be "meh" are overruled by the stellarness of the chili. Brisket Chili my friends, BRISKET CHILI! Now I personally find it best without being topped with raw onion, but that is strictly personal preference. And how there is not a chili omelette on the menu is baffling. So today I ordered the chili, a side of sweet potato fries (to make my own sweet potato chili fries), and a two egg breakfast with hashbrowns (mixed the hash and scrambled eggs together, skimmed the layer of cheese and sour cream off the top of the chili, layered it on the eggs like a hobo omelette and then slathered that bad boy with more chili). Ordered the Brioche French Toast too but resisted my urge to dip in the chili (though highly recommend dipping the Tillamook Grilled Cheese). At last visit ordered the guacamole and chips (delish), and the Thai Cobb (also delish). This place is open late every night, serves breakfast all day, and is open super duper late on the weekends. Something for everyone here. This is a local hangout for the industry crowd. The weekday morning specials are great. I usually get the eggs squared or the Goldilocks waffle with real maple syrup (extra charge), There aren't' many restaurants that do real Belgian waffles anymore. Many places just do regular waffles and eveh use pancake batter (Arggghh). The burgers are great. The fries are tasty. The help is awesome and friendly, even entertaining sometimes. Parking can sometimes be difficult to locate here but there is very near hourly parking lot behind the theatre on Vermont. I have tried grilled cheese all over this city from Melt to the Grilled Cheese Truck and Fred 62 has all the others beat! I'm not sure what type of bread they used but it was the perfect thickness for grilled cheese. It may have been sour dough, which in my opinion is always a good choice. There is a yummy cheese blend inside and they top it off with jalapeño potato chips for a spicy crunch. The plate is served with a hot cup of their delicious tomato bisque, a pickle slice and their famous F-Bomb sauce that gives the sandwich that extra spicy kick. I have never had a grilled cheese that was spicy so that may be the component that all the others were missing. The flavors in this sandwich were excellent. If this meal is any indication of how the rest of their menu items taste; I can see why this place was packed at lunch time on a weekday. The space itself has a great old time diner feel. There is a wrap around counter that singles or ours can feel comfortable sitting at. There are also booths and tables if diners prefer that. And for those sunny LA afternoons, there are tables lining the sidewalk outside of this cute Los Feliz neighborhood. I would always past by the place and finally got a chance to try it out with my friend. Came here on a Saturday afternoon it was quite busy but we still had the option of seating inside or out. The staff were very friendly and our waiter was pretty friendly. My friend and I pigged out (mostly me) on this day I had french toast which I loved, he had the pancakes, the grilled cheese was very cheesy but that's the way I like them. Its good to see that some places still have outdoors dining available, I have some friends that are still a bit leery about dining indoors. They are also open late, so you can grab something to eat after going out. The service was smooth and friendly. The food was so so, with my smash burger coming in on a doughy bun and not so crispy patties and also they gave us cold curly fries, but they came back out with some hot ones when we told them that our fries were cold. So that was nice. My friends turkey burger was ho hum. My friend enjoyed his tuna melt. Overall the experience was decent. This was like eating at a high school cafeteria. The chicken and waffles is served with a soggy waffle (no fun) and the chicken was tough and contained a lot of cartilage pieces. The menu said it was served with "spiced maple syrup" but what I got was not spiced and was not maple. The food served to others at my table (meatloaf, grilled cheese) was equally unappetizing. I don't think they make anything from scratch. It all looked like food service fare. I can open a can at home and have a better and much cheaper experience. The waiter could not figure out how to hanlde our bill or process our payments and spent at least ten minutes telling us about it. Get it together or tell people *at the start of the meal before they order* that you can only take cash or cannot split bills. With all the other options in Los Angeles, I don't know why anyone would return here. Edit: I resent the owner's comment below that I was aggressive or violent with the staff. The owner has no idea who I am, where I sat, or what day or time I ate at Fred62. This is either another epic mistake on the part of the restaurant or a blatant lie. When I was told they could not take credit cards, I paid in cash without protest. I just think we should have been told this before we ordered. If we had not had cash I don't know how I would have paid for the meal. I am asking the owner to remove the "aggressive or violent behavior" reference from his reply. I did not even raise my voice to the server or complain about the situation. And I most certainly did not make any physical move of any sort. It does not speak well of Fred62 that they would make this accusation. If anyone was violent towards a server, Fred62 should have called the police. My guess is they are trying to cover up for mediocre food with a false accusation and then wishing me well.
