My husband and I have been coming to Fred 62 for 20 years... what started as a late night, post- drinking spot has morphed into a local family favorite, where we take our son for milkshakes and onion rings. We came here for brunch yesterday and the wait was only a few minutes long for outdoor seating. I liked that they had a generous amount of umbrellas to cover from the sun since it was pretty hot outside. I ordered bottomless mimosas and a juicy Lucy burger. I love any place that lets me bring my dog to enjoy my time even more! The service was wonderful! Servers were amazing and kept the mimosas coming even without me having to ask. I've been coming here like twice a year for many years cause it's one of the few spots open late. This place used to be crazy popular many years ago, I'm talking the it spot. We used to be regulars and knew all the servers by name and they knew us... The spot is chill these days, the service is normal - typical diner service. Plenty of parking, conveniently located if you're on the east side. The food is consistently awful, maybe not the worst food you've ever had but it's pretty bad. They're open late though and if you're starving you'll find something on the menu that's not disgusting. You won't get food poisoning but it's not like a real restaurant. If you come here during the day though you have to get your head examined cause there are so many restaurants open during the day that serve much higher quality food. read more

I sprinted to Fred 62 when I heard they were doing a Detroit style pizza. We tried the '76 Dodge Charger and it was served hot, and perfectly crispy - as you'd expect a Detroit pizza to be. The edges, bottom and corners were crisped to perfection! There aren't many places in LA that serve Detroit pizza so I'm so thrilled to have found one I'll be happy to revisit. read more

Here's the thing I was starving on a cold Monday night & decided to go on postmates to get something to eat. I see Fred 62 with a free delivery countdown, only 1 minute 50 seconds left to get free delivery so I have to think fast, I scroll past their tuna melt and brisket sandwich which didn't look half bad but then I see coffee shop grilled cheese & think to myself mmm that sounds fast and good but then I see a $13.99 price tag on it which scared me at first but then I think it must be a delicious grilled cheese to be priced that much & I only had 40 seconds left on the timer so I hit confirm I add tater tots for an extra $1 charge. I end up paying right around $17 w/o postmates fees, for a grilled cheese I know crazy but I just knew it had to be good. Fast toward 40 mins later & I get the grilled cheese and it's straight up just burnt bread and cheese like on some kraft singles type stuff. I can genuinely say Fred 62 robbed me, whoever priced this grilled cheese needs to be locked up. I don't wish this type of disappointment on my worst enemy. Please stay away at all costs. read more

Came here with some friends who were visiting town when we were in the mood for some milkshakes. I did a google search for places that had great milkshakes in LA and Fred 62 popped up. I am often in this area because I go to Skylight a lot but had never stopped in here before. It has the classic soda counter vibe/set up with the leather seats at the bar and leather booths. It was appropriately decorated for Halloween so had a fun vibe. The lady who served us was very friendly and upbeat. You know you've gone to a place that takes milkshakes seriously when they bring you the metal mixing cup with the leftovers that didn't fit in your real milkshake glass. They had some good options and weren't prescriptive on the menu with set combos. They were priced a bit high at $7 each, but for the vibe of the place it wasn't so bad. The only other point of improvement is that when making a milkshake, the base flavor of ice cream should always be the flavor of the shake. All of their shakes start with a vanilla base and then they'll add chocolate syrup, peanut butter, coffee, etc to get the flavors. A chocolate milkshake should have a chocolate base always. Anywho, overall a decent milkshake with the appropriate amount of thickness - soft enough to come up the straw, thick enough to have to work a little bit for it. read more

Horrific experience from the watered down Bloody Mary to the unnecessarily over-the-top spicy meatloaf. I kid you not, the Bloody Mary tasted like flavored water. I know there was alcohol in there somewhere because I felt it a bit but it literally tasted like water that had been flavored and spiced and their Turkey meatloaf was so insanely over spiced with a thick layer of sauce slapped on the top, it was almost uneatable. I only continued to torture myself cause it cost money and I knew i would never come back whether I made a stink about it or not. I love Fred's, been going for years, it's our local diner. What I don't understand is why they're always changing the menu. They used to have THE BEST chicken salad sandwich and then one day, poof, gone. Why take something like that off the menu? It's a diner staple. Another favorite item, the punk tarts (like fancy pop tarts) changed as well. You could get get a berry combo or a chocolate. Now they have blueberry lemon (gross), Nutella & strawberry (too messy & I don't want to mix my berries w chocolate) and apple caramel (boring & who wants caramel after October, if at all?). When my husband and I first moved to Los Feliz we used to eat at Fred62 all the time. It was an affordable meal with a fun retro diner vibe and always had great service. Unfortunately all but the diner vibe has now changed for the worse. We went for brunch recently, and not only have they raised they prices to unreasonable levels, but they also switched to Intelligentsia coffee and made it way more expensive. One of our favorite things about Fred62 was that they had good strong, classic diner coffee for $1.95 with free refills. Intelligentsia might be the new hipster favorite, but it's horribly roasted, sour bitter coffee that isn't good to anyone else and certainly not worth paying more for at a diner. I'm sad to say we will not be returning to Fred62 for the foreseeable future, and we're bummed they've ruined one of our old favorite neighborhood spots by trying to become some sort of hip LA icon. read more

We had skirt steak with mashed potatoes, no animal burger ($9) with fries and the pastrami shirt rib sandwich (11). This is homey diner food at its best. Fred 62 is one of those places that are so ingrained in me it never occurs to me to review it. It's one of the places I used to come to several nights a week when I first moved out to LA from NY. Being one of the few 24 hour choices in the city that apparently sleeps at 10pm, I practically lived here while the SO was on crunch time at Sony Pictures and didn't get out of work until everything else was closed for the night. I loved sitting at the bar or outside at night or when it's not too hot. It's a cut above Denny's or IHOP but that's not saying much. Then again, that's not the purpose of this place. It's all about post-club drunchies, kitsch, and an 80s soundtrack. Just don't expect The French Laundry and you'll be happy. The food isn't super sophisticated or even that good now that I (and my tastes) have grown up but the one thing I still love and drive a hundred miles for is the homemade pop tarts (or whatever their cutesy name for it is that escapes my sleep-addled mind ATM). The price has increased over the years but my love for it has not decreased. Even though they heat it up in the microwave, even though sometimes they run it through twice and it's still cold in the middle, every bite of this is heaven, and normally I don't even like most American style desserts because they're too sweet (I'm all about the European and Asian sweets). I like all the flavors but the berry one is the best, tangy and sweet and warm like a grandma hug in taste form. The savory food is comfort food but not all that comforting imho (a lot of unhealthy food that older me just can't stomach as well as I used to be able to). If you must have savory food here my favorites are the Mac Daddy spicy mac and cheese balls, the avocado toast (no, I'm not a millennial lol), the deconstructed chicken pot pie, and the Juicy Lucy though it isn't anything like a true midwestern Juicy Lucy (and I might not like it anymore now that burgers from Moo Creamery in Bakersfield and The | Commons in Tracy have passed my lips). Either way do not walk out of here without getting a tart. Didn't fail burger was just right the patty was just thick and juicy. I got curly fries to go with it. Place is good. We went in the evening about 8:30 on a weeknight and there was no wait. The service was pretty quick and friendly. Everything came out as we ordered it and on time. The food is a little greasy... But what do you expect!? A great "greasy spoon". Prices are really fair for the area and the vintage decor was a plus. Last night I was planning on taking my gal to House of Pies, but a third party intervened and we ended up eating at Fred 62 instead because that Third Party said it was better. BOY HOWDY WAS HE WRONG. I was taking my gal to a diner because she loves diners, but this here Fred 62 is like a diner with white privilege that believes crystals can cure your feelings! Everything on the menu was more expensive than it should have been. Like I've never felt like I didn't know what I wanted because everything seemed like a bad deal. I ended up paying $17 for Chicken and Waffles that coulda been better had for cheaper at ROSCOES! My gal got the Chilaquiles which ain't chilaquiles at all. They're just chips covered in Ranchero sauce (not even Chilaquiles sauce) topped with scrambled eggs. Now my girlfriend is a real Mexican from Mexico and she was sure mad about this. She was also mad the breakfast enchiladas only came with egg whites instead of full eggs. Like what this place still believes in segregating whites from colored egg parts? Get with the times y'all. The customer service is always horrible. The food is actually good. The one time I ordered for pick up, I ordered an avocado toast, it was 10 or 12$. When I picked up, I handed the waiter 20$ bill and said, "do you need change ?" When I said yes she got mad and said well I need to go to the back and get it. She stared at me like if I was suppose to change my mind. I said ok, she was clearly bothered. She handed me the dollar bills and didn't give me my exact change in coins. She didn't give me any coins. I didn't say anything because I'm not going to fight over 37 cents. I just felt she was so entitled to get like 80% tip. This is a great location to visit after a trip to the bookstore or to vintage shops nearby. It has your standard diner food, but more vegetarian and gluten-free options than most, so that gives it a leg up on the competition. When I went, they were having a Tokidoki (brand) collaboration (there until Nov. 30th, 2017) so there were specials on the menu in honor of the event, special toys to purchase, and fun wall decorations. I wonder how often they do brand collaborations because I actually liked it and would visit more often if they occasionally switched it up. It gives the diner an extra incentive for customers to go back since the food is only okay. I think no one expects diner food to be great though. That's the beauty of diners: greasy and questionable food to indulge in. I ordered the nachos and it literally came with like five or six chips topped with far too much avocado. I ended up eating the chips and pushing off most of the avocado and just had a pile of green mess when I was done. I like my nachos plentiful and messy. I'm not looking to eat just six chips. So I won't be ordering that again. I am interested in some of their other items though, like their homemade pop tarts, and the like. This place is just alright, coming from a vegans perspective. I ordered the tofu chilaquiles and was not impressed AT ALL. It looked cool and all but it just tasted like salsa. The service was non existent and the bill was overpriced for what was served.
