Blackened salmon, baked potato, veggies. Orange roughy and shrimp on risotto with asparagus.
    Paul D.

My wife and I go to Freda's occasionally for special occasions, and last night was like that. We were treated like special people. But I also saw a family with four kids get seated at a big, round table, and the waiters wasted no time getting drinks in foam cups with lids and straws to the kiddos, and for them to be attentive to all kinds of customers like that is worth calling out. As for the food, I ordered an appetizer and the orange roughy with shrimp with a glass of wine, and my wife ordered salmon the way she likes it (not on the menu) and the waiter didn't blink and it came perfectly done. My roughy came on a bed of risotto and very large asparagus I feared would be tough. Not to worry, they were great, though I would have enjoyed three shrimp instead of two. The crab cake is extraordinary, and I urge you to compare it with other bready monsters you get elsewhere. Delicately crusted with a lightly spicy remoulade, it's a terrific starter. The mousse cake is a touch heavy but the crème brûlée is just right. We ate ourselves silly.

Had a good meal at Freda's! We'd come back for a nice evening. The meal was a bit more expensive than we'd hoped for and at times felt like some of the items ordered didn't meet the expectation. The surf and turf was solid. 5/5. Medium rare steak, nice potato, big shrimp. Crawfish dishes were good too, but you could tell they weren't fresh. What do you expect when you order crawfish in February. However, the portion was good size and garlic bread was delicious. The miss of the evening was the gumbo. It was significantly thicker than usual and had large pieces of pepper in them. Didn't enjoy it for the price point. Service was friendly and advised nicely on what to do.

I find it hard to believe I have never posted a review of Freda's, given all the times we have been there. This time it was for lunch. Oysters on the half shell, Fried Catfish and Fish tacos. Yum. Oddly for a Saturday lunch ( little past 1230PM), it was not very crowded, which of course is neither here nor there. Friendly service, tasty food, and a relaxing time. We will be back. Oh and the cornbread that is provided is delicious.

To start, we have passed by this for years and years, we live down the road but we never stop in. Finally we figured it was time for the former teen's BIRTHDAY meal. There was ample parking when we went, not crowded at all, mid day for us between lunch and dinner. The place is very nice, good lighting, great décor and lots of plants. The lighting is subdued and works well. We all started off with drinks, I got an old fashioned as it is becoming my drink of choice, Shana got a Mexican Martini, and M got a Mango martini then an expresso martini. All were very good. The cornbread they supply was amazing, just so so good. The former Teen and Shana got calamari with Marinara and Salsa Verde and they both loved it, not something I enjoy so I didn't try it. Shana got the Pecan Crusted Tilapia which was fantastic according to her. The former Teen got a shrimp and crawfish etouffee and raved about it. I got a shrimp and andouille sausage gumbo cup and then the shrimp and andouille sausage pasta. The gumbo was the chef's kiss, the roux was perfect. The pasta while still good was not as good as everything else in my opinion, I would have stuck to a larger Gumbo but wanted to try. If I had one complaint or something to work on, while the shrimp is plentiful as is the crawfish, the sausage is limited in both meals. I am more a sausage guy then shrimp and would have liked more of that, though the shrimp was good. The waitress was friendly, checked in without hovering, and answered all our questions. The food was mostly prompt, there was a slight delay on the French Bread we ordered which was a delight. We did get a bread pudding to go, so we ate that at home and it was tasty even not right out of the kitchen. While Shana and the FT loved it more then I did, it was still very good. It is a bit on the pricey side so be prepared for that, not outrageous but higher end so be mindful. It is a lovely place with good food and a fast staff. Due to pricing and location being easy to forget it won't be a regular but for a birthday or special event will we try to remember.

Had another one of frida's wonderful wine dinner last night september eighteenth. The wines featured were from Daou and perfectly matched with the food. Freda is a consummate hostess as is her lovely daughter, Crystal. A l8cal gem, this is a favorite go to spot!!

Y'all! I considered Freda's a hidden gem, off the main path. I've only dined here for dinner anout 5 times but The service has always been friendly. The food has always been delicious. My goal is to come for the buffet on the weekend. I hear it is top tier. Gotta get me some of that. Don't forget to get the complimentary bread and butter when it comes fresh out of the oven. And be sure to ask what the chef's special is for the day. P.S. they have a great wine menu but I always get the house red wine. It'sa cab and I love it.

I really like the ambiance at Freda's its low lit lights makes it romantic.I have been for brunch and enjoyed the bread pudding and combination of different dishes, well worth the price. We went recently for a birthday dinner and the dishes were lacking. The fried catfish is not traditional cornmeal fried, it's done with panko crumbs and lacked seasoning. The etoufee sauce was good but the shrimp and crawfish had no flavor, without the sauce it was a flop. Now the Sword Fish and mushroom risotto was amazing! They should add it to the menu as a regular item. The cream sauce adds a little flare and that risotto makes it razzle dazzle. All together I think it was just a miss on the etoufee but for the price it shouldn't be a miss.

The crab cake was phenomenal, one of the best I've had in a while. The jalapeno adds a nice and unique kick to this classic. A great heaping portion as well. Something I would get on every visit back if I have the chance. I was looking forward to trying the rainbow trout Alexander but unfortunately they had run out of rainbow trout that day. The chef came out and expressed his regret and was so kind about the whole situation, totally did not need to do that but such a thoughtful gesture. Instead I had the salmon Alexander and stumbled into a really amazing dish. The salmon was cooked really nicely, the crab topping was extraordinary, and the pesto rice which I've never heard of before was awesome. The setting here is a nice dinner out, perfect for a date or family celebration. The bar is quite large and separated from the dining room. I could see it being a great bar to have a drink. I have come here a few times whenever I'm in town to see family. This place really is great, always look forward to it.

I'm writing this while we're still here because the service has been that amazing. Now onto the food... My wife ordered the sausage, and she's absolutely obsessed with it. It's technically on the starters menu, but she always gets it as her main course because it's just that good. My son and I both ordered the 20-ounce Koji Coffee-Crusted Cowboy Ribeye, cooked medium-rare. When I say it melts in your mouth, I mean it. The coffee crust adds the perfect amount of texture and crunch without overpowering the steak. I highly recommend it. For sides, we shared the mac and cheese and the corn crème brûlée, and both paired perfectly with our steaks. We also started with the pork chop bites, which continue to be an absolute home run. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and the applesauce takes the flavor to another level. The only minor critique I have is that the bread wasn't quite as soft and warm as it usually is. But honestly, that's such a small detail in what was otherwise an outstanding meal. To finish, we had the Vanilla Orange Cheesecake and the Lemon Bar. The Lemon Bar was delicious, although I wish the center hadn't been quite so cold. The toasted marshmallow on top, however, was absolutely perfect. The Orange Cheesecake? Incredible. Total Dreamsicle vibes, and I would order it again in a heartbeat. What really made this evening unforgettable, though, was Alex. He has officially set the standard for what exceptional service looks like. Every server I have from here on out has some big shoes to fill. Perry's, if I can't have Alex next time, I hope the service is held to the same incredibly high standard because he truly made this experience special. Overall, Perry's came out swinging tonight. I can't honestly call it a perfect 10 because of a couple of tiny details, but it was absolutely a perfect 5-star experience. Thank you for an unforgettable evening and for making my son's birthday one to remember!

The complimentary bread and butter were also mouthwatering--I honestly wanted another roll. For drinks, we asked for something refreshing, and Delina delivered. My husband had a cocktail that reminded him of an Aperol Spritz with a mojito twist, while the watermelon hibiscus margarita was absolutely perfect for the weather. We shared a Caesar salad and ordered the Dean's Style steak with the sauce on the side. This was the one dish that left me a little disappointed. We were excited to try the food, and were hungry. Our server appeared (I can't remember his name but he was a short guy with blond hair). I ordered a cocktail and my husband ordered beer to begin with. He went away and then came back asking my husband if he wanted some whiskey cocktail, and we corrected him that we had asked for a particular beer. No big deal. We then ordered the deviled eggs and shishito peppers, and the red fish and short ribs for entree. A lady brought us the drinks, and the deviled eggs. Our server swung by and then disappeared. We thought the shishito peppers were on their way. We waited for what seemed like a really long time and still no shishito peppers. We also noticed that each table had a carafe of water except ours. We were just given water once, and then our server never bothered to fill the water up. Anyway, we kept waiting since there was no sign of the server. At this point, we felt he might have forgotten the second appetizer and we just did not want it, but he was nowhere to be found. A man (not our server) brought out our entrees. We then told him that we had been waiting for our second appetizer and would just want to cancel it. We asked if we could get the biscuits instead. He brought out the biscuits within a few minutes. Now this is where it really annoyed us. Had our server just come over and said he had forgotten our shishito peppers, it would have been okay. Human. What he tried was act smart and dropped by saying the shishito peppers would be out to which we said that we didn't want an appetizer after an entree and had cancelled it. I almost felt like he was treating us as if he thought we don't really dine out or whatever and he could just make fools of us. This really didn't sit right with me. We asked him for water and he filled it up left. The food was above average. The short ribs were good but my red fish had been hammered! The biscuits were good. The deviled eggs were good as well. Anyway, we finished our meal, and got the check, paid, and were waiting to finish our drinks. The receipt was on our table. Also, note, it was not a particularly busy day with several empty tables. What our server did next was absolutely unacceptable. I think he wanted to see if we had tipped him after his awful service. We did, but not 20% as we always do because of the soddy job he did, not to mention his attitude. We paid 15% which I think was more than what he deserved now. Out of nowhere, and mind you, after being absent for long periods before, he just came by, grabbed the paid up bill from our table to our shock, while we were still sitting and talking, looked at the bill, turned towards us, and muttered something angry under his breath and walked away. I have never seen this level of entitlement and bad behavior. We left right away. We had been really looking forward to this meal but I would not want to go back. The food was good, but not great, and I would not want to put up with such obnoxious behavior as a paying customer.

We were seated near the front, but I saw several dining areas -- all classic, clean-lined, and intimate. Our server, Adam, was exceptional from start to finish. His timing, attention to detail, and genuine care elevated the entire evening. He made thoughtful recommendations for cocktails and dessert, and every suggestion was spot on. Cocktails I asked for something light, and Adam suggested a summery twist on their cucumber martini. He added elderflower, and it was refreshing and delicious. We also tried the Divorce Papers (light, slightly sweet, with an earthy undertone) and the Dreamsicle, which is sweet, fun, and honestly as much an experience as it is a drink. While we waited, we were served a small blintz bite with caviar -- a lovely bite to start the meal. Starters We ordered the crabcake and the Caprese salad, both easily shareable. * The crabcake is one of the best I've had in Austin -- large, packed with jumbo and shredded crab, and seasoned perfectly. The aioli and fresh lemon made every bite better. * The Caprese truly surprised me. I expected heirloom tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, but the Sicilian pesto with Marcona almonds elevated it in an unexpected way. The pesto was thick, chunky, and incredibly flavorful -- it tied everything together beautifully. Balsamic and olive oil are added tableside, and the dish is as delicious as it is pretty. We were also served Brazilian cheese bread, which had a sharp cheese flavor and a great chew. Mains & Sides I ordered the 8 oz filet mignon, cooked rare. It had a perfect peppery crust and a tender center -- exactly what you want from a fine steakhouse. For sides, we shared: * Crispy Brussels sprouts -- roasted through, very crispy, and served with walnuts, feta, shaved prosciutto, and balsamic. Best when you get a little of everything in one bite. * Truffle sweet potatoes -- the first serving had undercooked layers, but the staff handled my feedback professionally and quickly brought a new dish. The remade version was delicious, with a great balance of flavors. Dessert Adam recommended the Carajillo, an after-dinner cocktail made tableside. If you enjoy espresso, get this -- the presentation alone is worth it. We tried two desserts: * Crème brûlée -- large enough to share, topped with berries, with a perfectly thin sugar top. * Flambéed strawberry shortcake -- made tableside by Enrique, who explained each step as he prepared it. The house poundcake is buttery but balanced by the ice cream and strawberries. Not overly sweet, which I appreciated. Also very shareable. Overall A great steakhouse should deliver on food, ambience, service, and drinks -- and J-Prime Steakhouse absolutely does. I had multiple moments where I paused just to appreciate the flavors. Adam made the evening fun, and the entire team ensured the experience felt special. I left wanting to come back and try more of their popular dishes.

This was a celebration dinner. The service was good, but the Japanese A5 filet was nothing special…read more It was just expensive--$144. The dress code was not being enforced because I saw sneakers, ball caps, tanks, and jeans. I requested no nuts due to a food allergy and the broccolini asparagus side had PISTACHIOS in it! Overall, very disappointing and would not recommend to anyone. I've had better steaks at Perry's, Eddie Vs, Peche, and Capitol Grill.

This restaurant was everything I could of asked for. Probably the best restaurant we tried in all of Austin. I'm from Los Angeles, and have been to many high end and hip restaurants, this was definitely up there with some of the best restaurants. Food: Crab tagliatelle is a must! This dish was delicious and everything you can ask for from a pasta. Gnocchi special with Peas and Asperagus is a must. This creamy and feather light dish was packed with so much flavour. Lobster scalloping was very good as well and so was the filet mignon. But best of all were the side of carrots, pear and endive salad and the Cho salad. My drink was the basil cocktail was was phenomenal. Everything was just so so very good. Our waitress Tiagna was an absolute delight in every way. Thank you so much!!!

I had a great view of everybody walking by the restaurant outside :) Our server was fantastic! He was super friendly and attentive. We arrived at 8:00 p.m. and left a little after 10:00 p.m. The food was delicious. My man absolutely loved his seafood pasta dish! He doesn't even eat pasta but he scraped that plate dry. I highly recommend ordering family style for the table but make sure your whole party is on board with splitting the check evenly because the restaurant does not break up the check according to diners only split evenly, I believe up to four ways. Example: Our check was $822 (included gratuities) for seven people and we were only able to split evenly four ways. Roughly $118 each. It is what it is but I didn't even get a main course. Just a glass of wine, a half of a piece of bruschetta, some of the Caesar salad and a small portion of the gnocchi (all shared) I'm glad I got to experience Red Ash, but now that I've checked that off my list, I'm good.

The churro toast was tasty, but a bit on the overly sweet side - I would skip and opt for the pancakes instead, which were unreal. Soft and fluffy inside, lightly crisp on the outside, topped with caramelized plantains and an incredible whipped cream. They're easily some of the best pancakes I've had in Austin, and I'd come back just for those. The space is beautiful and the service is on point, but brunch here feels seriously underrated. Both times we went it was surprisingly quiet, which makes sense since Ember seems to be better known for dinner. If you're looking for a great brunch without the usual wait, definitely give it a try.

Carrots were undercooked and soggy at the same time. Tuna tartare was solid but the plantain chips were so thin they broke when you tried to use them as a chip. Nice concept but had little flavor to the plantain. Yucca chips were nice. 1/2 chicken was dry and overpowered by citrus. Market fish was divine. Ambiance was beautiful however it smelled like a mix of fabuloso and used restrooms which was tough to get past. We were also seated in a busy hallway that made it hard to have a conversation. Service was great and they have such a nice and helpful staff. Underwhelmed and we won't be back unfortunately.
