We happened on this place by accident. This is by far the best restaurant experience I've had in years. The owner stops by the table multiple times to ensure your satisfaction. The wait staff are impeccable. In an era where most businesses act like they are doing you a favor by taking your money, it's refreshing to have such stellar service. Live entertainment is a bonus. came in from Chicago early summer 2020 to attend my granddaughter's baptism luncheon here. called a buddy of mine in St. John to get the drop on Freddy's. he tells me it is a great place. glad he was at the luncheon to see the b. s. that occurred. my family stepped into the private room that was sweltering hot. I requested from the server that the air conditioning be increased, twice. the aircon finally came on while we were leaving. the service was family style for about 14 people and totaled north of 600 dollars. started with decent french bread and salad, moved on to marginal pasta and Italian sausage and green beans and then to an extremely overcooked and dried out fried chicken that if the truth be known had been served the day previous and was reheated to complete dessiccation. my heart goes out to restaurants during these Covid times, and I did not post this negative review until I wrote Freddys and explained my dissatisfaction with their performance last summer. It is hard to describe Freddy's. Inside looks like it hasn't changed a stitch since 1955. All the furnishings are very old...the ambiance is relatively dark as are the walls and woodwork. The only money they put into Freddy's lately is changing the occasional light bulb. But if you can get over the aged appearance, Freddy's can make you a nice steak. One must remember it is a steakhouse, and an old fashioned one at that. So when you go - order a steak because that is really their specialty. Prices are a bit on the high side ... especially for Hammond Indiana ... but the steaks are pretty good. Our party had a porterhouse ($30 and very nice - 3 stars) and two small prime ribs ($25 each and not good - 2 stars) ... the problem with the prime ribs are that they make it uniformly rare and then heat up a slice to hit your doneness factor instead of carving from a whole side of ribs like Lawry's does it in downtown Chicago - so the prime ribs at Freddy's are usually greyish. Remember - stick to steaks. The tables are relatively close, so it isn't the romantic spot to ask your girl to marry you. Service can be problematic and the food sometimes comes out rushed, so just order appetizers before anything else to make sure it doesn't get rushed by the main course. The bar area is very nice...old world but just what a bar is supposed to look like. Drinks are good too - they don't short you on the alcohol. Ample parking is available onsite. We will go to Freddy's again because of the nice steaks, but you can't go to Freddy's when you want a quick meal. They take their time ... partly because of slow service and partly because you can't rush a steak ... and you should take your time also. If you are ever in Orland Park, try Petey's II as an alternative steakhouse. Petey put a lot of money into his place and it is a nice looking but old-fashioned dining experience ... right down to the real tablecloths. read more

This is a fabulous old time steakhouse. The service was great they were very attentive and took very good care of us. The fried lake perch was a huge portion and it was flaky and tender. My wife ordered the steak and shrimp and the shrimp were overcooked but she said the steak was good so that's why I'm giving them a two star review. We've made it a habit of treating our selves to Freddy's whenever we wanted a good steak or a good sit down meal. We love their "Freddy's Famous Poor Boy Steak Sandwich (Ribeye steak cooked to perfection on toasted garlic bread). " This time the meat was grisly and even a bit over salted. Best I could say is that it still had an okay flavor. Now the cheese seem to have been replace with regular American Cheese. Yes we order these sandwiches loaded, cheese, mushrooms, and cook onions. We've always gotten a white cheese, possibly mozzarella which really made the flavor stand out. American cheese made it taste like something you would get from a fast food joint. The worst part of it was, was noticing that this place now charges you a fee for using a credit card! Yeap.... 2 prices on your receipt. Credit total, a lower CASH total..... Go figure... who carries that much cash to pay for one of Freddy's meals, I meant it's not McDonalds! Not sure when they started this credit fee, or even that I may have just noticed it now and had paid it in the past. I attended the restaurant for a birthday party that was intended for 25 but ended up being 40. Party started at 5 and some people got their food 3 1/2 hours later with a few not getting food. While eating we were greeted with the police saying they were called because people didn't pay. 3 people left due to having prior engagement. In the meantime- the owner/manager told us at the beginning it could only be 1 check. The 3 guests Zelled their money to the host. So, we were all confused how we didn't pay as there was never a bill given to us or the host. It appeared tthey ran the host card but was declined by Chase because they thought it was a fraudulent activity. Mind you- they ran her card without giving us the bill but called the police. It's a shame that in 2024 we were treated worse than an animal. The waitress was rude and unprofessional. Not to mention they made a lot of money at the bar. Nice place good food it's a nice restaurant the food is pricey considering from the looks of the building and location they are not a top notch ritzy restaurant type of place but the service and quality of food makes up for it. Grew up in the area and went here for the first time recently. If you can't appreciate the old-school vibes, go to Applebee's, bro. Everything about this place is unadulterated nostalgia. It's the kind of place you go to enjoy a meal at a place that doesn't look like it just stepped off of an HGTV home renovation show, with cookie-cutter decor and meals. I loved it, our food was good, the servers were kind, there were regulars seated around, it had the same vibes as my grandma's party basement--and I'd much prefer to support a small business that has been serving the Region for years (without fleeing to a nicer/wealthier town nearby), than go to some junky steakhouse chain where grubby little kids are throwing peanuts on the floor and the entire meal takes 25 minutes. read more

Here's my Story and I'm stickin to it! It started bad and got worse. We sat at bar. Asked for drinks and menus ...finally got the worst olď fashioned I ever had. No menus, finally got them 45 minutes have passed. Got Saganaki I had to remind them I ordered..soup, salad (she got wrong dressing). Salmon (was good) and my ribs came with my ice cold. Ribs were charcoal, not charred. To the constant rolling eyes of the bartender the potato and ribs went back. I was asked if I wanted a new slab of ŕibs, answered yes. In my stunned amazement she brought THE SAME SLAB OF RIBS BACK! When the owner finally graced our presence he DID NOT ASK WHAT HE COULD DO FOR HIS CUSTOMER, HE TOLD ME NOBODY EVER DIDNT LIKE HIS RIBS. HE ALSO DENIED THEY BROUGHT BACK THE SAME RIBS THAT OBVIOUSL HAD A COUPLE MISSING AND A COUPLE HANGING WHERE I STARTED EATING THEM. Even the guy sitting next to me was shocked they brought the same ribs back out. The owner NEVER OFFERED a resolution or asked what he could do to make it right. He also told me to next time sit at a table to get better food...WHAT??? the food is not the same if you sit at the bar. There's more but I think you get the point. The worst $156.00 we have ever spent. We could not remember why we have not been here in over a decade. This experience reminded us why. The potato soup had no flavor. The lake perch was very oily, bland and had bad eye appeal. Looked like it came from a frozen bag. Garnish was sad. The mashed potatoes that came with were cold. My wife never finished the replacement and said it tasted like it was cooked in old water The prime rib was so fatty, even the manager agreed with me. I only ate a small portion. Half the steak was fat. Sent it back and received a tasteless New York strip as a replacement. The best part was the mushrooms and that was even thin in portion. Our appetizer for the cost was disappointing, tasted like chef Mike made it (microwave). We will never even think about eating here again. We should have stuck with our original choice in Longhorn. Would have saved about $75.00 and have never had a bad meal there. Lesson learned. The ambiance was dismal and boring. Booths were uncomfortable and aged. This place lacks any appeal for the times. I love the decor probably because it hasn't been touched. I mean the built the place and it has always been that way...they are committed to that interior. Hello, FOOD SNOB here. Thought I would take a nostalgic trip and visit this place that I use to frequent back in the 80s and late 70s, when I worked down the street. Gone are the half our waits in the lobby. The place still looks the same but the quality that once was is gone. The fresh baked bread, salad, soup and relish tray were great. The Oysters Rockefeller were OK. The Alaskan King Crab Legs for 58 dollars Market Price were not fresh. They had to be previously frozen. They just were not worth it. The Scallops sauteed in butter and garlic were OK but again I do not think they were fresh. Can't comment on the Steak because we did not have any and probably will not be able to because I don't know if I will be going back. But now this is a nice restaurant for the area it is in, and the Bar Area is pretty cool. read more

Don't Ever Eat Here. Ever. My family, including my mom, two kids (a special needs 7 year old) and a 17 month old, my best friend, her mom and my step dad made reservations here for Mothers Day this year. Let's just say that when we got there the place was busy - but not unreasonably packed. I explained we were here with the XXX Party and she said she was prepping our table. Little did we know, our table had been prepped and the other members of the party were sitting in back. We waited 10 minutes until our party came out and got us. Eventually a waitress came to our table. Everything was bad about this. Every_Single_Part. I did not even have a menu until 30 minutes into the sitting. Firstly, I ordered a Zinfandel (RED WINE) - 15 minutes later she came back with a white Zinfandel. I sent this back and smartly ordered my own bottle of Cabernet as I knew how this evening was starting to look. She disappeared for periods of 20-30 minutes at a time during htis dinner. Most of these times we were waiting on food and drinks. Our moms were parched, waiting 40 minutes for their drinks - TWICE. Bar was blamed. When she brought out our salads, she spilled the dressing on my special needs (sensory) child's head and his security blanket. Of course the dressings were wrong. Kitchen got blamed. She passed hot soup over my baby - numerous times. And forgot an appetizer (which came out after the meal). She placed the lobster butter warmer in front of my baby and shortly thereafter lit the saganaki over my baby's head and could not put out the flames - blaming the "lemon juice". I was finished with my steak and lobster before the other half of the table received their cold food. Kitchen was blamed. My BFF went up and asked for a manager who blatantly ignored her request for a new waiter. Then the waitress refused to stop "serving" our table. This dinner was $400.00. While the food was actually decent, the service was awful and our moms received cold dinners on their special day. If you want to spend a crap ton of money for the worst service known to mankind, you should go here. This is your place for the worst mother's day meal ever. The service is horrendous. The hostess doesn't even say hello to you. We arrived at 6 and didn't leave till 7:40. The service was really poor, we had to ask for our salads. The salads arrived at just about the same time the main meals arrived. The pork chops were really good. My fiancé ordered a Rib Eye steak medium well. The steak that came to our table was rare. I mean really rare not even close to medium well. The waitress took the steak back and by the time it came back, I was already finished with my meal. Very disappointed with this restaurant for how expensive it is. For the prices you would expect better service without all the problems. Other tables around us experienced the same type of service. Another couple waited since 5:30 for their meal and just as they were about to walk out, the meal arrived. Even better was they tried paying with a gift card and the manager came out and informed them the restaurant couldn't except the gift card because their machine had been out for 2 days. You would think the restaurant would either inform customers before they order or post a sign on the entrance door. Hadn't been here for a while so I decided to go there for a Sunday dinner. Ordered the steak sandwich which used to be a really great meal. Not this time. The waitress was great, the salad was fresh and crispy. But the steak sandwich was terrible. Very thin piece of meat (maybe a 1/4"thick) over cooked (ordered med rare-was well, well done), over seasoned with tenderizer and very grisly. Very disappointed. For a $20 sandwich I expected more. We had no coupons, but it immediately cheapened our experience. In general, you can expect a higher level of service and quality on a Monday at many restaurants due to lower attendance. Freddy's could earn 4 stars on that day if they changed their approach. It seems this business is resigned to accepting its role as a quality steak and twice-baked potato joint ready for more traffic...once they master their message. What I mean is that they control operations conservatively due to these economic times. Ask for more and you get it. Leave disappointed and take some blame home with you. This used to be such a special place! I remember going as a family every New Years since it was our favorite. Been many times since with my husband and my kids!! Tonight my husband and I decided to take my parents. 1. They seated us in a side room with no one else in there and no music! AND the carpet or something smelled musty. My husband had to take a work call so we know when we ordered and 40 minutes later we asked if it was on its way? 5. Finally comes 5 minutes later. Filet $32 is cold and overdone. New York strip $35 was warm and yummy but well done not medium. Prime rib $30 was 1/2 the size it usually was... very dry and stringy. Ribs had no meat but LOTS of sauce. Perch was nicely cooked but soaked in salt!!!! Mind you the waitress we had was amazing! When we asked for a manager she wasn't surprised. He comes over and said my daughter ate too much to comp, my strip was cooked fine, and the salt was an opinion. $150 after the discount and we wanted to make sure we tipped well. Such a shame!!!! Had the Seafood Platter several times this year and have never been disappointed. Fish, shrimp, scallops, frog legs AND lobster tail for about $32, a bargain! Relish tray, soup, salad and bread included too! Grouper was excellent on a another visit. This is a throwback restaurant, similar to the closed Phil Schmidt"s, Catladi's, Vogels, etc. A vast improvement over a few years ago, which forced me to abandon the place until this year.
