My first time at Fred's, I thought I was in love. I am dog obsessed, by which I mean that when I see a dog, I become a dog. And by this, I mean that I start making noises that certainly don't sound human and I get really really really really excited. So when I quickly realized that Fred was dog-themed, I thought I had found my place. But while I love dogs, I also love good food and cocktails. If I really want to look at pictures of dogs, there are these two wonderful things called Instagram and Pinterest that I can use without having to patronize a restaurant. Anyway, Fred's is alright, but I don't think I'll be back. Nothing I've consumed here has been BAD, but it has been pretty forgettable. So forgettable, in fact, that I couldn't tell you what I had the first time I came here. I want to say it was the Healthy Choice Fajita, but I could be wrong. I just know that's the type of thing I'd choose. The second time I came - for trivia night, at a friend's request- I ordered the Black Bean Salad, which comes with Cajun chicken and mangoes. I remember it being okay, but nothing special. It's not often that you find mangoes in a salad, so that was definitely a nice touch. Cocktail-wise, still underwhelmed. I'm a cocktail nut, so my tastes have become pretty particular at this point. Looking at the menu, the only drink I distinctly remember was the Pear and Pomegranate martini, which was way too sweet. I believe I also got the Perfect Harlem, which was booooozy and I could only really taste the whiskey. So if that's your thing, why not? Just don't get as drunk as those 40-somethings with adolescent-level humor on trivia night...because that is not fun for anyone. I should note that the waitstaff here is great. Fred's was an amazing place to have a group brunch on a Sunday. The inside is much bigger than it looks, covered with frames dog photos which is a fun touch! The owner, David, is so awesome and accommodating, and our waiter Abu (sp?) made sure we were well taken care of. Service was exceptional! The brunch special was awesome - $18.95 for a bloody/mimosa/Bellini plus coffee and breakfast. The plates were HUGE and the free blueberry muffins with strawberry butter were such a delicious surprise. I had the eggs Benedict and the eggs were perfectly runny. They came with perfect potatoes and a green salad. I couldn't even finish it! Our group had a blast and will definitely be back because everything on the menu looked delicious. We went to Fred's. That is why we are writing this. The John Kouka Team. It was decent food-wise. The brussel sprouts are great and are the reason why I have come back. I ordered them twice and enjoyed their soy sauce/sugar mix very much indeed. We also have ordered a tofu bowl--the sauce was flavorful, but there was not much to it. At $22, it could have been sold at a non-sit-down place, for half the price.The service was very good, they asked us if we needed drink refills at least twice. Also the conversations around us were really interesting. A couple of guys were discussing their lives on Broadway and the mask mandate... I love eavesdropping and it makes a restaurant better if you are listening to people talk about their instagram and facebook while you watch them checking it. The outdoor was slightly crowded. It was extremely overpriced. Our team is discussing the meaning of the word "cozy". What did Fred's do to make it feel cozy? Went here for early dinner so I decided to just get two appetizers instead of the whole entree. Got the mussels in wine and garlic sauce: yummy! It was so tasty and flavorful. Second entree was calamari: it was MEH! Almost tasted like fake octopus, didn't have much flavors to it except the dipping tomato sauce. We sat outside so the atmosphere was nice. The inside seemed small but cozy. They have pretty good happy hours menu but I missed it yesterday. They're dog friendly too so if you have your dog, puppy, bring them with you. I didnt know this place was named for a dog....Fred. And according to their mission statement...the restaurant aims to be friendly, loyal and reliable just like our favorite four legged friend. The walls are filled with pictures of dogs. I wasnt expecting to come here for brunch but ended up here when the line to my favorite place was around the corner. We were given a basket of muffins- corn, blueberry, chocolate with strawberry butter....Yum! I was expecting a great brunch after being presented with such yummy bread. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros which didnt have as much flavor as I expected of a spanish dish. The tortilla underneath was soggy with grease. The rice and beans were bland. Overall, I had to salt and pepper the heck out of it and it still wasnt what i consider a good brunch. The unlimited coffee and one mimosa were good. The service was on-point. Overall, I would return to try something different maybe more along the lines of pancakes and french toast since the bread was soo good but I doubt I would order a new egg dish. My friends and I came here for brunch after we gave up on Jacob's Pickles. We called ahead and they indicated that were able to accommodate a group of 10 right away. We were seated in the hidden back section. The place is filled with pictures of dogs You can get a brunch entree and a drink for a set price. Their bloody mary isn't bad. It isn't the greatest, but it isn't the worst that I've tasted. It somewhat flavorful with a bit of a spicy kick. I ordered the steak and eggs which has a supplemental charge of $2. The steak was a skinny cut. When they mentioned a 4 oz shell steak, i thought it was be thicker but smaller, not long and thin...The problem here is that you can easily overcook the steak because it is so thin. The eggs i asked over easy. The eggs were cooked beautifully and the steak was overcooked to my liking; however it was flavorful still. They also provided complimentary muffins with strawberry butter. The strawberry butter was delicious. The service staff were friendly and very accommodating. I'd come back again. read more

Tried Fred's for the first time today. The decor was cute, dog pictures all over the place. I guess Fred was great dog. I had the Mac and cheese, and I loved it. My partner had the chili, and he said it was incredible. I had to wait a while to get into the bathroom, but then the restaurant looked very busy so I shouldn't complain. The original plan was to eat at "Good Enough to Eat", but the line was out the door and it was pouring rain outside. And I don't stand in the rain to spend my money so we walked across the street to Fred's. There wasn't a wait which was wonderful. We literally got there at 3:55 and the pre-fix brunch was over in 5 minutes, but our nice waitress let us order the pre-fix any way. Which was lovely because it was only $15 and included drinks!! I liked how the pre-fix menu was separated with breakfast food on one page and lunch food on another. It made it easier to choose. I wanted the French Toast, but it was made with raisin bread. (Yuck) So I ended up ordering the Banana Pancakes and they were really good. It's hard to find places that can really make pancakes. They were excellent. Not crumbly, right texture and great color. The waitresses were so attentive. I swear all 3 of them kept asking if we needed anything. They were cool, but they and the bust boy kept wanting to take our plates away and we were still eating. So we felt a little rushed. We joked "If they ask us one more time....". All in all, I really enjoyed myself and my meal. Our plan for a fun relaxing brunch went bust at this place. We came here with our pooch since we heard Fred's is not just dog friendly but dog themed. We were told the only table we could get (among a few available) was the most crammed inconvenient table of them all. Requests to move us were not accommodated. Shortly after ordering (strawberry pancakes and scrambled eggs), a swarm of bees and flies began hovering around us and on our plates and drinks. At this point we got up and demanded to be moved over. With no apology, we were moved to a table that had no shade (it was quite hot). No attempt was made to open an umbrella or help us in any way. Overheated and frustrated, we asked for the check and left. Beyond subpar service, the food was very mediocre. We will not be returning. read more

A very unassuming restaurant from the outside, but walk in and you are in for a treat! For starters, the owner and waitstaff are absolutely delightful, you are welcomed into this establishment as if you are family. The food is exactly what you expect it to be, it's nothing fancy or exceptional, but the vibe is super nice and the owner is very kind.

Living near Fred's for over a year I have noticed that it is always pretty much full, especially at brunch. So I said to myself, "Heck! I better give it a try!" I can only describe my experience as, "Extremely Pleasant" The brunch consists of an entree and a brunch beverage (meemo, or BM) for $21? Pretty good price for brunch if you ask me. I thoroughly enjoyed my BM, as they definitely were not afraid to kick it up with a bit of spice. Not heartburn levels of spice, but enough for you to go, "mmm, ok ok I see you" The brunch burger I had was great. A big, fat, sloppy slab of cow is all you need sometimes and Fred's came up big for me on that front. The fries could use a little more love, but they are certainly adequate. I'm a big fan of their large wraparound bar and good selection of beer. They also have a pretty solid happy hour with some cheap bites and booze. Overall it's a great neighborhood staple that really nails down all of the fundamentals, and I am very grateful for it. read more

This place has good reviews and I have noo idea why. I got a sampling of normal bar foods here that was hoRrible. The wings were inedible, my sister and I got 8 and ended up with 6 leftover that we gave to a homeless person. Mozzerella sticks tasted like nothing. The Cobb salad was fine weirdly. COVID-19 outdoor dining review: After being told by the hostess at Jacob's Pickles that the wait was going to be a "very long time" my friend and I came to Fred's for brunch on Saturday. We were sat immediately at a sunny table, and service was really fast/attentive even though their sidewalk seating was full. I got an egg white omelette with American cheese, ham, peppers, and onions + French fries. Everything came out hot and was amazing - felt like a very elevated diner breakfast (I say this in the best way). And the omelette was enormous/they did not skimp on the fillings. Since moving to the Upper West Side, Fred's has been my favorite spot to frequent. I was drawn in by the fact that the restaurant has pictures of dogs all over the walls and is named after a Black Lab, which is the type of dog I have as well. However, what kept me coming back was the service. I would regularly come in on weekend nights and our bartender was almost always Matt. He is one of the friendliest bartenders in the city and it was very clear that many other people coming to the bar came for his service. Attentive service, a kind personality, and a willingness to make every guest feel like an old friend really made Matt one of the best. Having recently found out that he is no longer working at Fred's has really been disappointing to hear. I am sure I speak for many others besides just myself when I say that Matt's presence will be very largely missed at Fred's and I am not sure that I will visit with the same frequency as he really made this bar what is was for many of us. I hope the ownership and management understands what they lost and will work harder to keep their other good employees around longer. read more

Haven't been to Fred's Restaurant in a while but have nothing but good memories of past meals. That was not the case this past Sunday when I went for dinner with my wife and son. I ordered a hamburger medium rare with onions and tacos appetizer. The tacos was delicious but the hamburger horrible. It was dried out and overcooked. I ask for extra raw onion and received none. Met a buddy here for dinner one night. I was immediately greeted by a very friendly member of the staff. The decor of this restaurant is wonderful. I love the pictures of the dogs all over the wall. What a perfect little joint. The food was fresh and delightful. The atmosphere was quaint and cute. Fred's offered a very welcoming, low-key experience. Our waiter forgot about us toward the end of the meal, and we had to wait over 20 minutes to pay the bill, but other than that an all around great experience. We wanted to sit in the corner but she wouldn't allow us to. The restaurant was pretty empty, but she said that the table was for 4 people, and the place fills up pretty quickly. We came in there at 5pm and by the time we were done, the place was like a ghost town. There was plenty of seating. Maybe it was a fluke, but having a bigger table would have been more comfortable for us. She came by asking us if we needed anything, and it might have been an insincere question because we asked for more bread, but never got anything. Extensive brunch selection and HUGE portions. Each entree comes with hash browns and a salad. I had the traditional eggs benedict, which was perfection: Toasted english muffin, flavorful ham, a "just right" poached egg and topped with creamy hollandaise sauce. It came with two: I could only eat one and half of my hash browns and salad. The hash browns were nice and fried on the outside (my fave!), and the salad was fresh mixed with just the right amount of dressing. (4 stars overall). I came here a couple months ago and had the grilled vegetable and mozzarella sandwich. It was pretty bland, even with the pesto mayo. (2.5 stars). Stick with the brunch menu! I didn't like being seated outside where I was roasting, BUT we were seated pretty quickly. So no complaints (and hey I was seated next to a very adorable french bulldog). - Cobb salad was good. Small to average sized portion (I didn't feel stuffed) I'm used to cobb salads having egg or turkey or something other than bacon, so just fyi. - My friend ordered the quiche with a small side salad. Delicious but definitely very creamy and cheesy, on the heavier side. Overall the portions are average. The prices aren't high for the UWS, but I do think you can get a better brunch deal elsewhere. We had our first meal of 2013 at Fred's, and I'd say we started of the year pretty well! To be honest, we were originally intending to visit GETE across the street, but their line was pretty long. Fred's was serving their brunch menu for New Years Day, so we decided to pop in there instead. After waiting for about 10 minutes, we were seated at a comfy table right next to a heater, score! Brunch is $15.95 for an entree, a basket of biscuits, a mimosa or bloody mary or juice and coffee or tea. Pretty good deal. And they aren't cheap with the liqs either. I got the salmon benedict and Rusty got the crab cakes benedict ($3 surcharge for his). We were both in the mood to try something new and these dishes definitely delivered! While we waited for our food, we devoured the chocolate chip biscuits and the strawberry butter. Yummy. The mimosas were also delish. I loved the salmon benedict. The salmon wasn't sliced to thick and it was smoked perfectly. It was so yummy and filling. I really could not finish all of it. It was served with a side salad. I highly recommend this dish. However, if you are willing to dish out $3 extra and you really love crab...go for the crab cakes benedict. Very tasty as well. Oh, and both dishes are served with home fries. This place gets pretty packed and rowdy, but it's cozy. And yes, the pictures of dogs everywhere is really adorable. My friend and I walked around the Upper West Side looking for a place to eat dinner, and we found Fred's quickly looking at the menu and noting that they had a good happy hour. It is cozy and inviting inside, and the framed dog pictures everywhere (I love dogs!!) is so cute (not sure if people just randomly bring dog pictures to hang or if these are namely neighborhood dogs)!! We ordered a couple happy hour sangrias (good, refreshing, tasty) and a bowl of mussels with red sauce --yum! This was a tasty meal in itself -- I could've ordered another one for my entree but I wanted to try something different from the menu. We ordered a couple more sangrias though! My friend got a burger and I got the Momma's meatballs and pasta -- we both enjoyed our entrees! I had been craving pasta and meatballs for weeks so this was so perfect. Service was nice and attentive, and Fred's was such a great place for my friend and I to relax and catch up as I hadn't seen him for years.
