    Getting my lunch on
    Danielle M.

Needed to pick up lunch, so of course I came to Yelp to find a place nearby. I saw that the Fresh Box Cafe had numerous great reviews, and so I plugged the location into my GPS and headed there. The café is located in an office building. Had I driven around to the back, I would've seen the outdoor tables and signage. However, there was no signage at the front of the building or in the lobby area. Fortunately, woman pointed in the right direction. I would suggest that they put a little sign somewhere in the lobby. Upon entering the café , I received a warm welcome from the ladies behind the counter. They made some recommendations, and I was glad that I went with a tuna melt. As I'm not a fan of rye bread, I was glad that I chose to have it on ciabatta. The sandwich came with the choice of a bag of chips or fruit. There are plenty of tables inside, and the café is clean and inviting. I was there just before lunchtime so I can imagine this place gets quite busy. My sandwich was prepared to go and came out fairly quickly. I didn't eat it for another 40 minutes or so, but it held up quite well. The tuna fish was outstanding and paired with toasted bread and cheese was a winning match. I'd say this was probably one of the best tuna melts I've ever had. When in the area in the future, I will definitely stop in again. Glad I found this gem of a lunch place.

I have to start by giving major recognition to the owners (at least I believe they are the owners). I came to the cafe for a late lunch right after 2pm thinking that they were open until 3pm. Turns out they had already closed. Just as I was walking away, the kindest woman unlocked the door and insisted I come in and order! I was stunned. I am sure by that time she was ready to call it a day and head out but I so appreciated the thought as I had a brief time for lunch during a busy day and didn't have much time to leave the building complex. I took a quick look at the bakery items and menu and was salivating because everything looked and sounded great. Once I saw French toast, I knew it was a brekkie for lunch kind of day. Lol. They seriously have an impressively sized menu for a small cafe centered in an office building. I expected a few sandwiches and salad offerings. Once my French toast was ready, the staff was kind enough to insist I sit and eat inside but it was a pretty pleasant afternoon by Florida standards so I decided to take it outside. Made me a little more comfortable since they aren't masking in the establishment. A bit bummed about that but there is a good amount of outdoor seating available with umbrellas and trees for shade. The food was great and I will definitely dine again next time I am working in that office. The service went way above and beyond and for that reason alone I am happy to frequent this establishment!

A wonderful overall experience! Friendly staff, delicious food, great portions. At first I thought I had the wrong address because I was at an office building. I went inside and am so glad I did. The food is fresh, and they have a rewards card with lots of regulars that come through. I went to the outdoor seating on the side. Will be back again soon!

This is my all-time favorite go-to for lunch, and sometimes breakfast, and sometimes a snack or a coffee I am lucky enough to work nearby, but the food would definitely be worth going out of the way for. They have daily specials, use fresh ingredients, make your order in front of you so you see the quality going in. I have tried at least 30 menu items and have found each one delicious. Today I ordered the 1/2&1/2 with the vegetable soup and tuna melt - fantastic!

Very welcoming, friendly and courteous staff. There was various healthy options on the menu. I was happy to see a salad bar, everything looked fresh and tasty. I ordered they're garden vegetable quinoa soup, it tasted delicious and home made. I also ordered a salad at the salad bar, delicious and fresh as well. The entire cafe looked clean and organized. They had a couple of TV's and tables to sit and eat. The prices were reasonable and affordable. I will definitely recommend this place and come back when I am in the area.

So happy to have found this hidden gem! I got the recommendation from a co-worker & I've been hooked ever since. They have a variety of grab and go items like salads, as well as a salad bar, paninis, pizzas, soups & more. The food is AMAZING & always fresh! I highly recommend the Coconut curry vegetable soup! Sooo good! They also have great coffee & bakery items. I love this place and highly recommend it! Best of all the customer service is the best!

I found this gem on Yelp. I was looking for a place with fresh food and stumbled on this place. I decided to give them a try since they had great reviews. From the moment you walk in, Lisa greeted me so nicely. She advised me on all they offer since it was my 1st time there. I felt like I was greeted by family. I learned there is another lady named Lisa who recommended the steak panini as it is their best seller. OMG..That was one of the best panini I ever had! I can't wait to go back and support this awesome gem!

No way this stuff wasn't pre-made a while ago. Oh yeah, part of a banana and one strawberry. Despite what the waiter said, I could tell everything was pre-made. It's about the same quality as the free "continental breakfast" most cheap hotels offer except at the hotel it's still warm and you get refills on coffee and the waffle is freshly made and hot enough to melt butter. No free refills on coffee here unless you buy their "pour over," and then you get one small refill. The strainer for the coffee was stained and filthy when it was brought out, so they're not using fresh ones or even cleaning thoroughly between uses. GF had a meatless omelet and a smoothie. Her omelet was hot so obviously it was made fresh unlike mine. I told the waiter my food was cold and he swore he saw them "take it out of the oven," but nothing I ordered would be cooked in any over other than a microwave oven. Total bill for two: $60+. This was with a 30% discount on my plate for my food being served cold. Honestly you'll have a better, fresher meal at IHOP or Waffle House or Denny's, for a fraction of the price and you'll get coffee refills.

Upon scanning through the menu, my eyes zoned in on the thick Banana Pumpkin Seed Pound Cake and the right side of my mouth drooped slightly and began to salivate. It seemed like a win win decision so I paid the $4.00 and Dolly lightly heated the cake per my request. The cake slice was presented on a wooden serving paddle which was a nice touch. A roaster bearing the name of…read morean Indigenous people -- the Calusa, the ancient shell-mound builders, the unconquered lords of South Florida's mangroves and waterways. People who never surrendered. People whose bones are folded into this very soil. As someone who walks through this world carrying Taíno blood and the memory of peoples whose names colonizers tried to erase, that word hit different. It wasn't a gimmick. It wasn't a logo. It was a declaration -- that this land has a story older than any espresso machine, and somebody here understood that. That understanding alone earned my curiosity and my respect before I'd even stepped through the door. "The name carried the weight of a people who never bent. That's the kind of legacy worth building a roastery around." Then I learned the story behind the man behind the roaster -- and it only deepened my respect. Luis Arteaga came home from serving in the United States Marine Corps and did what so many veterans do: he looked for work. No fanfare. No red carpet. Just a man with discipline in his bones and calluses on his hands, trying to find his next mission in a civilian world that doesn't always know what to do with people like that. He found his way to the original owners of Calusa Coffee Roasters. They saw in him what the Corps had always seen -- dependability, grit, and a willingness to learn. They gave him a job. A floor to stand on. And Luis did what Marines do -- he didn't just fill a position, he grew into something greater. Over time, through sweat and dedication and an unmistakable passion for the craft, he rose to become the owner of the very roastery that once took a chance on him. That's not a business story. That's an American story. A veteran's story. And it's exactly the kind of origin that makes a cup of coffee taste like something more than coffee. CALUSA COFFEE ROASTERS IS A SOUTH FLORIDA INSTITUTION Fast forward to today, and Calusa Coffee Roasters isn't just surviving -- it is a staple. Walk into the right cigar bar on a Friday evening and someone at the table will mention the name. Sit down at the right diner counter on a Tuesday morning and a regular will nod toward that familiar bag. In South Florida's rich, layered, cafecito-and-culture coffee landscape, that kind of word-of-mouth is earned over years of consistency, of showing up, of never letting the cup get small. Luis continues to build something that belongs to this community -- rooted in the terroir of a region as complex and layered as its people. The coffee is exceptional. Bold where it should be bold, nuanced where it earns it. The kind of roast that makes you sit down instead of rushing out. That's no accident. That's someone who respects the craft because he was forged in institutions that demand nothing less than your best. "When a Marine finds his mission in a roastery, every bag he puts his name on carries the same standard -- do it right or don't do it at all." Meeting Luis was one of those moments I didn't expect to move me the way it did. We are both moving through the coffee world trying to build something that means something -- something rooted in identity, in service, in the belief that what's in the cup should tell a story worth hearing. And here was a fellow Marine who had walked a road I recognize: uncertain ground, earned footing, and a refusal to quit. And finally, if you are in South Florida and you have not made the pilgrimage to Calusa Coffee Roasters on Commercial Blvd, you are overdue. Go for the coffee -- stay for the story. And if you're lucky enough to meet the man himself, shake his hand. He earned it in more ways than one. To Luis Arteaga and everyone at Calusa: thank you for carrying a name that honors this land. Thank you for honoring the service that shaped you. And thank you for a cup of coffee that carries the weight of all of it without spilling a drop. Semper Fi, brother. Keep roasting.
