Came here on a Wednesday morning to grab coffee with a friend, and honestly this spot exceeded expectations. I ordered the pandan coconut Vietnamese coffee and WOW... easily a 10/10 for me. It had the perfect level of sweetness, and you could clearly taste the pandan without it overpowering the coffee itself. Everything was super well balanced. My friend got the sea salt Vietnamese coffee. He said it was good, but personally prefers the traditional version without the sea salt. We also shared the HK egg waffle stuffed with Portuguese custard, and this was a standout. The waffle was crispy on the outside, light and hollow inside, and the custard was smooth and just the right amount of sweet. Definitely worth ordering. The space itself is great if you're looking to study or just hang out. It's quiet inside with plenty of tables. There is outdoor seating too, but there were a couple of people smoking when we went, so we stayed inside (which worked out since it was hot anyway). Service was smooth. We ordered at the counter and the barista brought everything out to us, which was a nice touch. Overall, it's a really cute spot with great drinks and unique snacks. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. Only downside is parking can be a bit tricky since it's just free street parking, so you might have to park across the street and walk over.
I was pleasantly surprised how cute the inside was kind of gave a vintage London coffee shop on a rainy day. I'm definitely a plant person and there was lots of plants upon the front of the store. The parking is right off the street but if you park in the rear or the back of the restaurant or coffee shop, there's more parking I ordered the Vietnamese coffee iced and the egg yolk Vietnamese, coffee hot. I was not disappointed. I love a strong, robust coffee and it came in with a punch nice sweet creamy yet strong flavor. I did in fact order their little pancake popper things you can pass on those, but do not sleep on this man's coffee, but like I say, give it a try and you decide.
I had a putrid, bad experience at Fresh Roast (San Gabriel). I ordered the Pandan Coconut Coffee ($6.50 - Iced). It tastes stale, bitter, and artificial! When stirred, the coffee tastes worse. It's a burnt, old aftertaste. (Important: There's a 50 cent fee for card payments if purchase is under $20. There's also a 2 Hour Limit for customer internet.) I arrived at Fresh Roast (San Gabriel) on Wednesday (around 10:35AM). There's street parking, and there's a hidden, worn-down rear parking lot. The rear's sign says, "Limit 2 Hours." Staff is approachable and friendly. Staff speaks limited English; however, Staff is charming. Staff is diligent behind the counter. My order took three minutes and 50 seconds. Good time. As mentioned, I dislike this Pandan Coconut Coffee ($6.50 - Iced). Its flavor reminds me of the stale, two-day old coffee that I desperately drank during my old college days. This Pandan Coconut Coffee tasted like leftovers, and it felt poorly put together. Thankfully, this coffee wasn't bad enough to toss into the garbage can. At the very minimum, it woke me up. Concerning ambiance, Fresh Roast (San Gabriel) felt sticky, humid, and uncomfortable. I felt my skin slowly become moist from its air. Ugh. The many tables all had dried sticky stains, and there's many food crumbs on the floor. It all looked poorly maintained and old. There's also a gender neutral restroom in the back, but I had to walk through many buzzing flies. Also, there's a surprisingly large amount of hidden electrical outlets, but it felt like searching for an outlet in a retired grandparent's dusty home. However, I did appreciate the cute knickknacks despite the grime. And I enjoyed the soft music. Overall, Fresh Roast (San Gabriel) felt poorly maintained and passionless. I had a puke inducing experience. Perhaps this location had potential once upon a time; however, it's currently a dusty relic. I would wait a long time before attempting Fresh Roast (San Gabriel). Hopefully, it improves... 2 out of 5
I've visited Fresh Roast a few times to enjoy their drinks. Their HK Milk Tea is impressively well done. I've also had some of their food items, including the Portuguese Egg Tart and Tofu Pudding. I can't recommend either of these though they were prepped to order. The Portuguese Egg Tart was small, and it wasn't the most tasty. The Tofu Pudding (with red bean) come with the sweet syrup, but the texture was a bit off. There is Wi-Fi available, and it is otherwise a dimly lit, cute spot to study at. It's very calming, without any loud music - a tad cramped, but still a relaxing spot. Their menu is plentiful; you'll find it very difficult to try everything at least once!
12/6/25 Looking for a mom n pop shop for egg waffles & treats? Come to Fresh Roast in San Gabriel. As soon as you walk in, you smell this wonderful aroma wafting in the air, so warm & inviting. There's parking at the rear of the shop & I entered through the back entrance. It's definitely honey, vintage & cozy. Eclectic. A quirky yet friendly gentleman greeted me as I was gawking at the decor & inquired what I would like to order. He even recommended soft tofu dessert or frozen dumplings to take home. As I ordered, he spoke out loud to another person in the back ground (implying for this person to start making what I am ordering). I ordered Hubby's usual oat milk latte & I wanted an iced pandan latte. Saw these egg waffles so I ordered the pandan , he asked if I wanted mochi, I said "why not, sure". When I was paying, I saw his shirt, he said they sell them for $10, in the spirit of things, I bought one and told him, hey "you're a good salesman. He says they sort loose out on these, I said "that's a great price". Alright, the latte for Hubby was definitely an epic fail, flat, no foam, it's like a regular cup of coffee with cream. My iced pandan latte was pretty good but way too sweet, he said next time to ask & adjust the sweetness level. I just requested for another cup of ice to dilute it. Overall I still give this shop a 4 star for his amazing service & demeanor & the warm, cozy ambiance. The egg waffles were delicious, fresh, hot, both lightly crispy outer layer & soft center. Will like return if I'm tge area.
Grabbing my morning coffee. I wanted to take my friend so she can try their durian coffee. I told her it's weird but it's a good weird. I got myself their Spanish coffee....so delicious. We also ordered their Portuguese egg waffle. So bomb, just the right amount of crunch with the gooey sweetness of the egg custard in each bubble. The food and service is always on point. The ambience is a nice and comfy coffee shop. Similar to the ones I've gone to in Vietnam. This is my to go spot every time I'm in the San Gabriel in the morning.
Always passed by this spot since it's on a busy street. Needed to catch up with a family member so we decided on this spot for some sunday morning coffee. Let me tell you this place is like walking into an auntie's crib in the best way possible. It was looking super promising. It felt homey, cozy, with a lot of character. I mean look at this beta fish they had chillin on our table. Now onto the coffee, I got the sea salt iced coffee. To be frank, it was a little underwhelming. It tasted very diluted with milk and not strong whatsoever. I liked the nuttiness but it was subtle. The place has plenty of seating indoor and outdoor, so I appreciated that. Will be back to try a different drink.
Pandan Egg Waffle (no mochi) - good texture, as it was crunchy on the outside, while still moist and chewy on the inside. However, it was lacking flavor and didn't really taste like pandan. Ube Vietnamese Coffee (hot) - the Vietnamese coffee was good and not too sweet. The drink contained solids, like shavings/threads of ube, which were a surprise. Wish there was more of an ube flavor though.
This is a small coffee shop located on San Gabriel Blvd. It is full of characters. There are a lot of vintage coffee related decorations. They also rent out tools to make egg waffles. The barista is a very friendly gentleman. He can make coffee based on personal preference. For example, specific flavor and how strong it should be. I ordered ube coffee with non-fat milk instead of coconut milk because I do not like coconut flavored drinks. The coffee came out good and full of ube flavor! I like it. He accept cash, card, and zelle. Perfect if we happened to forget our wallet at home, and still want a cup of coffee! There are 2 parking spots in the back, and street parking is available. This is a very convenient location, and I will come back for more coffee.
Coffee was delicious and the egg waffle was amazing. The owner who is an older man was so sweet and was great. The vibes of the cafe were very vintage and felt cozy. Sesame latte - 9/10, amazing latte, which there was more sesame flavor! He let me know that he could make it sweeter if needed Pandan Egg Puff - 11/10, this was soo good. I love egg puffs and haven't had one in a while! Inside was soft and outside was crunchy. I saw there was a portugese egg tart one and will definitely come by again next time
Fresh Roast is that rare mom and pops coffee shop in the SGV area doesn't just have a distinct vibe that feels cozy and authentic, but also serves up the most legit egg waffles you can find for miles around. Filled with rustic furnishings, egg waffle makers for rent ($10 for 1 day!), and other touches that take you a world away from the bustling street outside, Fresh Roast sure has a lot of character that I feel is lacking in other tea and coffee places in the area. I think it's the perfect spot to get some work done for a couple of hours or to hang out with loved ones or friends as well. But with that character and terrific vibe also comes a delicious sounding menu of drink and snack options. I had a sesame latte here that did not skimp out having noticeably strong coffee that wasn't drowned out by its sweeter ingredients. And regarding the egg waffle I mentioned earlier...with a "bubble" that is crispy on the outside and really soft in the inside, you get a waffle that has a texture that feels like it was made with really good batter and cooked with the right amount of time. Most other egg waffles I've had here in SoCal taste too soft, to be frank. I think it also helps that the establishment is family owned and family run - little visual touches such as stickers on the bill as well as a stack of red envelopes customers can take for free by the register help to remind you that the owners are people who are very much part of the local community. I also wanted to note a neighborhood cat seems to have made a home for itself in the backside seating area. I will definitely do my best to support such a gem of an establishment and I would urge anyone in the area to stop by for a great coffee/snack experience!
5 stars solely for their egg waffles The decor gives me... Uncle vibes but you know what? If the food is amazing I really don't care haha. Their egg waffles are SO GOOD. This shop is a bit further but I keep coming back just for the egg waffles. The original is good, but my favorite lately has been the Pandan egg waffle with mochi. It's perfectly chewy with a hint of Pandan. Tbh I'm not sure how he magically makes these waffles so quickly but he's definitely perfected it, I've even debated whether to rent their egg waffle machines and batter because I crave it so often haha Pandan coffee was just ok. A great little tucked away coffee shop with some pretty delicious coffee drinks and more! I love the entire vibe of this place-it feels rustic, but cozy and relaxing at the same time. It's definitely special compared to the many other coffeeshops I've visited. You can definitely tell the many years of in-house coffee roasting experience in the coffee. It's always strong and earthy, but never burnt to a char like another major coffee chain that will not be named. It's their own unique taste that I can't taste in coffee elsewhere! This time around, I picked up their famous pandan coconut coffee and Vietnamese coffee for me and some coworkers. I got one of the pandan coconut coffees, and I loved it! It was subtly sweet and not overpowering. The coconut also peeked through and gave a nice, smooth milky taste to the drink. The coffee itself was nice and mellow, and overall the drink was much better than I thought it to be! There's so many drinks and coffee blends here, I'm definitely going to try them all if I can. Please clean your coffee machine before serving more customers! I am so disappointed. This used to be one of my fav coffee spots! I haven't stopped by since precovid and decided to order americano from this cute little coffee roaster. It came out much bitter than I remembered and had some black stuff at the bottom that weren't coffee grounds...The first thought that popped into my mind was that I was sipping on a leaf or a bug. This place reminds me so much of a place in Philly that I love a lot (Ray's Cafe and Teahouse if anyone is going). It has the mismatched, cozy, homey, slightly worn feel AND it has siphon coffee (although I did not get to try). We got the pandan coconut coffee which the man at the counter took great care in making (it was quite sweet, as pandan flavors tend to be, but so good), as well as the pandan egg waffle which was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and piping hot. We watched the sun go down and the sky soften while nibbling/sipping on our snacks. read more

The location is very hidden. You can easily miss it since it's on the big street of San Gabriel Blvd. Fresh roast has been in business for many years now. There's a few tables set up. So a few people were there to study/work. The inside can seem a bit cluttered but the ambiance is very vintage and cute. I almost forgot about this place but a friend of mine reminded me they have egg waffles and I have been craving for HK egg waffles since! I ordered the original egg waffle and the green tea waffle. There's not much filling inside and the texture is very crispy which is perfect for my taste! I couldn't really taste much of the green tea but the waffle was much crisper than the original. I heard they have good coffee but have yet tried it. They also have a lot of other flavors for the waffles like pandan, durian and chocolate. Overall, there's not much places around the 626 that makes HK egg waffles so this would be a great place to get your waffle cravings. read more
Fresh roast is a small little hole in the wall coffee shop. They have a variety of small breakfast foods such as bagels, waffles and sandwiches. However I came to try their egg waffles. I got the original egg waffles and the green tea waffles. The waffles were so crispy and amazing. I feel maybe it could be a touch sweeter but nonetheless it's delicious. I love how crispy it is, they gave me the waffles in a Togo box with the holes on top as was instructed to keep it open as it would get soggy. I also got the coffee temptation to try. It was really good, if you're a fan of stronger coffee definitely go here. There is a small parking lot in the back however there's a good amount of street parking in the front. read more

We ordered the pandan mochi waffle & the pandan coffee. For the waffle, definitely eat it as soon as you get it so it's warm & soft. It starts to harden fairly quickly and then it's not as yummy! The pandan coffee was delicious. You're actually not supposed to mix the flavors btw!! Just drink it. The owner is very friendly and works hard. I recommended checking them out especially during covid! Fun fact: my grandpa used to sell fresh roast sugarcanes from our backyard for their sugarcane juice over 15 years ago! read more
I've visited Fresh Roast awhile back and kinda forgot about it, small problem to have living in SGV is because there's so many good things to eat/drink you don't really need to repeat! Anyhoo, visited again this past weekend during Covid time and ordered 2 pandan egg waffle to-go plus a pandan coconut coffee. The egg waffle was perfect that it's chewy inside with mochi and crunchy and warm on the outside. The pandan coconut coffee was not super strong but just right. I had no problem falling asleep that night even though I had it in the afternoon. The extra egg waffle I dropped off to my family and they enjoyed it very much as well. Since all our tummies were happy we visited again the very next day! This time we got the lavender egg waffle, cold sweet tofu dessert with shaved ice and another pandan coconut coffee. The lavender egg waffle unfortunately was a bit over cooked/burnt. You can definitely taste the burn and it was too crispy. It was like eating chips. The tofu didn't look anything like the picture where it had different toppings. Why only just red beans? The only saving grace was the pandan coconut coffee. I guess the egg waffle was just cook by a different person? And I don't recommend the tofu dessert here. Definitely stick to the coffee though! The owner Jimmy was very nice and would suggested drinks and other snacks. He also has many upcoming ideas such as rose flavored egg waffle and pandan jello. Loved this place! The owner Jimmy is really sweet and all of his products are delicious. He will recommend different items based on your taste. I personally recommend the bubble waffle with chocolate, the Hanoi Insanity Coffee, and the Pandan coffee. Truly a San Gabriel staple. read more

A solid coffee place! I was around the neighborhood of San Gabriel, and I need my coffee fix. Thankfully this place got it covered. I was surprised that they have a little twist on their coffee menu. I ordered the Panda coffee, which is very much I like. And if you like durian, they got you covered. My friend bought the durian coffee and i got a taste of it, surprisingly its pretty good! Just be careful that the durian coffee is not for everyone because it has a strong durian aroma. The place is a little bit sketchy with all the plants covering the front. However, if you want to try something different, I suggest you come and check it out for yourself. I guarantee that this place will change your coffee game! Finding parking is a little bit hard, especially the shop is on a busy street. They have curbside parking in the front, and a few parking spots in the back alley. read more

I really love the vibes of the cafe and wanted to like their drinks as well. It has a very homey environment with some couches and a bookshelf with a big window. When we went to order, the lines were a bit confusing as the counters weren't properly labeled for order/pickup. We ordered the ube latte which the menu mentioned was new. I had previously ordered ube lattes at other cafes and love them. This one didn't have a strong ube flavor and we mostly tasted the coffee which was pretty strong. Additionally, we thought it would be more of ube flavoring but was surprised to find chunks of the potato in our drink. I didn't love the texture that it added. I would be interested in going back and trying some of their more popular drinks and egg waffles but wasn't too impressed with their new selection. It was pretty busy in there at the time with only one guy taking and making orders. As a result, it seemed pretty hectic in there. It can also get pretty loud in there with the espresso machine so holding a conversation with friends may be a bit difficult in there. Love the pandan coffee here. Pretty sweet in flavor! Wish it had a little stronger coffee added. Also tried their coconut coffee with was light coconut flavor but also good. I loved this cafe and can't wait to return. It's both charming and cozy with plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. During the late afternoon, it was very quiet with only a few other people inside and a couple outside. The service, coffee, and food were excellent. The man working at the counter was polite and professional. They have so many different coffees, as well as other drinks, to choose from. I ordered the "coffee lover" and was very pleased with my decision. I also ordered a ham bagel sandwich with egg and avocado. The sandwich was delicious. They're Fresh! They're so fresh, exciting. It's exciting to me, Yeah! They're fresh, they're so fresh, they're so inviting to me! And after discovering they had the Panadan coconut coffee I had to come experience the taste. The drink itself has floral grassy notes and with the coconut addition it gave the coffee a sweet aftertaste to it. Now for the hidden gem of this shop and all its glory, The Hanoi insanity coffee with the golden egg. This is like a dark piece of chocolate that starts off sweet and ends bitter taste. You start off with a funny foam sweet taste as it hits and swirls in your mouth then the bold rich flavor opens up your tastebud senses well at least it did mine. After a few seconds after that sip I felt myself salivating then a little grinding of my teeth! Wow! Now this is why it's called the Insanity and the effects that come with it and we'll at least in my experience. This is THE spot for HK egg waffles !! My favorite spot everrr. I always get the original egg puffs with mochi filling and it never disappoints. It's made fresh to order and comes out out piping hot. The waffles are perfectly crunchy outside and soft inside. Everyone that I have brought here has loved it also!! It's about $5 but there's additional charge for toppings. There is a lot of great reviews about their coffee, but I always come at night so I've never tried. It was pretty empty on a Tuesday night so make sure to support small businesses during these tough times :( The owner is super nice! You can park right in front of the shop or in the parking lot in the back. read more

I ordered the Affectionate Coffee - coffee + black tea with milk, which is my favorite drink combo. Super smooth and flavorful. When you first start sipping, it taste like milk tea then you get hints of coffee at the end. The inside is bustling but the service is fast. The menu is extensive and you can order many speciality drinks as well as small foods (the mochi egg waffles are very good here). I always come here when I visit LA! read more

Getting my tires replaced down the street and decided to give fresh roast another go to escape the valley heat. I ordered the Belgian waffle (so fluffy) and a lavender iced coffee, slightly sweeter (sweet tooth) and gworllll ya gotta try it. It brings me back to a cafe in sf that I would frequent often. If I remember correctly, they also roast their own beans! I'm not gonna lie, I've been disappointed before with this establishment, I've previously ordered the pandan, coconut, and mocha and wasn't a fan of any of them. BUT THIS LAVENDER ICED COFFEEEE?????? I love this spot! Their egg waffles are good. You can tell them to make it more crispy. I love the variety of flavors they have. I've tried the original and the pandan, both good. If you like HK style drinks, this is a decent spot! Next time I'll work myself up to try the durian coffee too! Also for any parties, definitely renting their egg waffle maker, they sell the batter as well! read more

Cute and authentic lil spot. Love love the iced Pandan Coffee. Very fresh with just a little taste of coconut. Also, great customer service. The barista (maybe the owner) is soo cute and sweet. He gives me a warm feeling and can tell he has a kind soul/good heart. He gave me a complimentary egg tart fresh out of the oven. I been there way too many times in one week. I've been driving 25 mins there and back before work, but it's worth it. read more

I'd never seen or had durian egg waffles before and had to check this place out. After taking one step within the doors of this unassuming cafe off South San Gabriel Blvd, we were met with the addictive aroma of fresh coffee and even fresher HK-style egg waffles. The place is family run and owned and the space is crammed with an eclectic, but cozy assortment of small tables and chairs. If we weren't on a time crunch, we would have loved to spend some more time on the patio. We opted for a pandan latte and a couple of egg waffles. In both the latte and the egg waffle, the pandan was very subtle, most likely because it was real pandan and not made from concentrate. This meant the pandan egg waffle ended up tasting pretty similar to a classic/original/regular HK egg waffle. The durian egg waffle had a lot more oomph thanks to the durian. It also isn't as sweet, but every single puff had a bit of durian in it! Every puff was crispy on the outside, but soft and pillowy on the inside. The latte was good too--coffee was strong and the pandan/milk mixture added just enough sweetness. I'll be back for my durian coffee. read more

I think so. The coffee beans usually comes in a bag of whole beans. I vaguely remember they can ground it for you if you prefer ground coffee. Call them to verify before you go. The whole beans are wonderful. I grind it myself at home.

Yes, I was just there today and saw coffee with eggs on their menu! I believe the price was $5.50.

Yes. I usually get Coffee Temptation (both hot and iced) and it's strong. They have your typical Vietnamese Coffee. Those are strong. They also have a variety of coffee, so I'm sure they sell less strong ones and decaf as well. Just ask them to…
Are they strict with their 2hr wifi policy? i have a meeting that's around 3hr and needs a good coffee space with wifi for that (a weekday morning)
I've sat there for roughly three hours and nobody asked me to leave while I surfed the Internet using the WiFi. Make sure you order coffee and some food otherwise you may get the boot.
