This store specialized in British food imports is adjacent to Robin Hood Pub. They also have a frozen area section where they sell pies, etc made at the pub that you can take home and bake which is a nice idea. Cute shop, lots of British chocolate, candies, marmalades, teas, spices, sauces. It's one of these places I like to drop by when I go to dinner next door. Fun items to buy once in a while. Came here because I saw this pastry in British Baking show called Battenbergs! I called the shop before driving here and the owner was so sweet and kind. She confirmed that she had it. This is the first review I've ever written on Yelp, but I thought it was necessary. I went here on Thursday night, and I was shocked to see that the sales clerk wasn't wearing a mask. He spent the whole time I was there sniffling and coughing, and there was no ventilation. If I wasn't wearing two masks and there were other British shops nearby, I would have left immediately. He had a cloth mask hanging around his neck. I guess he couldn't be bothered to put it on. (Also, a cloth mask! Seriously? Better masks have been available for over a year and are super cheap). I hope the shop owner reads this and tells their staff to wear a higher-quality mask and stay home when they're sick! Also, they should keep the door open, so there's at least some fresh air coming. read more

This place was ostensibly closed a few minutes early, but as I made a special trip, they opened especially for me. I was able to purchase Irish and British items I found very difficult to find or to have them shipped, particularly in the pandemic period. Surprisingly, the prices were great. Cate T. took me here as pleasant detour in The Valley. It's a very small shop but they cover most of the bases for British favorites. Jams, teas, chutney, hp sauce, ribena, specialty candies (Penguin, Aero, Bounty) and even dainty teapots. This is a great stop because they carry some hard to find items that are worth their price! Not all items are a good deal though, I definitely could find a better price on Ribena elsewhere. With so many candies to spend my money on, I had to keep myself in check lest I end up broke and diabetic. =p The one thing that makes this shop different, is that there are pre-packaged frozen foods you could take home with you and cook up such as Shepard's pie and Bangers that look like they were made in the pub's kitchen next door. I wasn't on my way home when I stopped by or else I would have picked up a couple items. =( Great deal on scones only a dollar, and even better that day it was half off so 50 cent scones. =D Yeah people can say so and so place is better, but this place can hold it's own in the valley for over a decade! read more

Such rude and unprofessional behavior today! I've been a regular customer for a long time. Today I arrived at 10am and quietly watched the lady inside the store talk on the phone for 7 minutes as I waited outside. Once she hung up the phone I tapped on the door and she waved a hand at me to wait. Eventually after standing outside till 8 minutes past opening time she opened the door and I walked in. I said nothing but as I walked past her she sarcastically said "your welcome". I ignored her but rethought the whole thing before I bought my usual pies and other favorites. She saw me at the door for 8 minutes past opening time and then was rude enough to complain that I didn't thank her for letting me in to spend money in her store. My Mom took my brother, his girlfriend, and me to Robin Hood British Pub for lunch today so of course we had to stop by the Friar Tuck Shoppe after. The store is stocked with pretty much anything a British ex-pat, like my Mom, could possibly want: chocolates from Cadbury, Galaxy, Mars, and Nestle. There are many flavors of Walker's potato crisps as well as Guinness crisps. In the freezer section are meat pies, Cornish Pasty, sausage rolls, Battenberg cake, as well as Yorkshire Pudding. Also on offer are Branston pickle, Piccalili, Heinz Salad Cream, Heinz Baked Beans, Spotted Dick and many more items. I even found the coin shaped black liquorice Pontefract cakes which can be difficult to find at other British shops. Prices are high (My Mom's Battenbergs were $7.50 for a box of 5 small cakes) but importing these items isn't cheap. Some items may be past their "best before" dates but that doesn't mean the food is spoiled. Don't forget that Britain along with most of the world writes their dates as date/month/year. read more

They have a good quality of items, a lot of times in speciality stores the items can be close to, or passed, their sell by date, but i've never had that issue here. I think because they do not have a huge supply. They've always had what I've come here looking for though. Good selection of candies. That always makes me happy. A tad bit expensive, but when you're craving a crunchie bar it's worth it! read more

After reading previous reviews of other customers unsatisfactory encounter with the woman working in the shop I would have to concur that she is nothing short of a horrible bitter wench. I decided to give the shop the benefit of the doubt so My mum and I went into Friar Tuck Shoppe specifically to pick up some mince meat for my mums beloved mince pies. First, walk through the front door.. woman looks up from the till and then looks down not even a nod or a crack of a smile. Not even 2 minutes later a Caucasian woman comes through the door and is greeted with a warm "good morning. How are you?" Sidenote: I've read about this wench being racist, I can concur. Next, browsed up and down the 2 aisles of the shop and my mum picks up 3 jars of mince meat. We go to the front to pay and the woman says absolutely nothing. Just stands there with a sour face. She looks into the basket of items we had picked and with her eyes rolling and irritated voice says something to the effect of "we only have 4 jars of mince meat, people are going to be upset that there's no more mince meat" how is this my problem? I'm just a consumer buying goods. It's difficult to properly communicate this woman's whole negative energy into words. Without a doubt she is a miserable woman who should hand over the reigns to someone who actually wants to keep patrons in the store. This is the last time I'll step a foot into the shop and I've warned my English family and friends to shop for goodies from home elsewhere. I remember coming here as a tot. My mum is British, and when we moved to Sherman Oaks, a patient of hers must have told her about this place, because I remember stopping here often so she could buy her PG Tips and a flake bar. Tea is VERY important, and British chocolate is delicious! So, after Yelper Karen C. and I finished up at an Elite event, we had time to kill before going to see a friend. I remembered this place was somewhere near the event, and lo and behold! There it was! The place is not overly gussied up, as a matter of fact, the only fancy looking spot in this shop are the tea pots at the front window. The rest is stark. Unadorned walls and then shelves lined with your edible goods. Sweets, biscuits, Heinz baked beans, bottled and jarred chutneys, jams, marmalade and sauces. And a frozen section housing ready-to-bake-in-your-oven faves like steak and mushroom pie, steak and kidney pie, curried chicken pie, and more. The prices are what you would expect in a British Import Shoppe, some things higher than others. However, being that this may very well be the only shop in The Valley, I'm not overly chuffed about. The Friar Tuck Shoppe really hasn't changed since my memories of it in childhood, and the fact it's still there just shows you that they've got a devoted clientele. The shoppe is also attached to the Robin Hood British Pub. As a matter of fact, standing near the rear of the shoppe, I could smell the food making scent of delicious British fare coming out of the kitchen. If I hadn't made myself full at the Elite event, I would've gone next door for a pie! Great to visit a childhood memory and find it intact. read more

I LOOOVE this place. Sweet little British lady runs it. I got my Brown Betty teapot here and come by every few months to replenish my British tea supply. They have YUMMY scones, freshly baked. Don't forget your devonshire cream! They have a good selection of classic British pantry items, candy, tea, and also some china and British knick knacks. I always stop by when I'm in the 'hood. Mary, at Friar Tuck Shoppe, will instnatly make you miss your 'nan', and the shop alone will make an expat even more nostalgic. I came in for Twiglets and was able to bag the largest Colemans Mustard I've seen. There's a good selection of all british foods, and gift items, at somewhat reasonable prices. Plus, it was the first place I've ever seen supporting the Poppy Appeal outside of GB. Lovely little 'shoppe'! read more

I have been in there many times and if someone is a certain way, then so be it. Take it as it is. You will still get your stuff. I show some courtesy there and respect for my elders and never have an issue. Who says they have to suck up to you when its YOU thats wanting the product. I went looking for authentic British fare. I found this place in the Valley and am pleased to report that I intend to return. The entrance to this shop is on the eastern side of the block right next to the main entrance of the Robin Hood British Pub, the two doors are under the Union Jack sign. You'll hardly see anyone walking around on this corner because there's hardly anything interesting around that intersection. There's the Shell Gas station across the street to the north and Carl's Jr. at the opposite corner to the west. When you walk up to the door there are a few very adorable tea sets in the window. On the left, inside of the entrance they have their souvenirs the sales person is to your right as you enter, and it's a long room with a bakery to the back of the shop. The shop itself consists of two rows of shelves, the right row of shelves on the wall carry the condiments and home wares, the center shelves on the right carry the sodas, etc., on the left the center shelves carry the teas, etc., and on the left side wall you'll find the sweets/biscuits/a refrigerator. There are a good variety of British fare that appeared, to me, to be the more popular items sold in Britain. It's a small shop with only the essentials on their shelves. I even checked the -sell by dates- on their items and found only current dates for the end of this year and some expiration dates for next year. I believe it's because they keep a limited supply of items that ensures that they have quality/current goods on their shelves. They carry authentic Brown Betty teapots and they have many samples of authentic fine china tea sets. There were a small selection of souvenir's dotted around the shop and the prices are reasonable. I say the prices are reasonable because if I converted them to GBP that's what I would be paying in Britain. The nice lady who works there mentioned that they get more variety/products in for the Christmas holidays. My boyfriend is British and wanted to make my family a traditional British Christmas dinner, so we headed over to Friar Tuck for some essentials. It's not a big store and the shelves were sparse due to the holidays (we learned our lesson, shop early), but we were able to find most everything that we needed- paxo, Bisto and Green's yorkshire pudding mix. We also walked out with a ton of candy, favorites of my boyfriend. I can see that this shop will be visited frequently by my home sick boyfriend and this curious American. Well-stocked shop for sure, and the high prices are to be expected (it's an import shop for gosh sakes), but I agree with those who have said the older lady's personality is a serious problem. She gives off a prickly energy, like she's tightly wound and always on edge, and she says rude and inappropriate things. During my 10 minute visit, she pointed out a stack of shopping baskets that I should not use because they were dirty, warned me not to expect service right now because she was in the middle of something, kvetched about how erratic her internet service was, and complained to another customer about "crazy people who wait till the last week before Christmas to do all their shopping." I was glad to buy my frozen bangers and get the heck out of there. Honestly, I think if you peel away the layers of what is wrong with this poor woman, I think it boils down to fear. It's as if she constantly feels threatened, bracing herself for criticism at every turn and trying to deflect it. She needs therapy and I hope she gets it. read more

Really overpriced, intended to buy more, but just couldn't justify how much they are marking up everything.

This lady was so nice contrary to the past reviews. We stopped in because the English shop in Tarzana was closed. We were able to find most products we needed. I didn't find it overly expensive as these are imports and customers should expect to pay more for such goods. The English shop in Burbank has closed for good so now there are very few to choose from in the valley and this might be the only one that survives. Please consider supporting this shop and all local businesses. read more
