Ya know, reading some of the previous reviews on this place can be a bit like riding the Yankee Cannonball at Canobie Lake. There are highs, mids, AND lows. Despite all that, I can tell you upfront that our experience was more or less sublime. Naturally, there was one setback in particular that I just can't ignore (which we'll cover later). First, the good.. Clam chowder: Now, this was a March special. So, it's not on the regular menu, far as I can tell. But let me just say...this is by FAR some of the best damn chowder I've had in a restaurant! Granted, we're in New England. So, I'd expect nothing less. Just the same, it's worth mentioning. This chowder was perfectly seasoned to the point of not needing anything additional. And it had ALL the clams! SO many clams!! 10 out of 10, they really need to make this one more often! Queso dip: Again, we have a cheese sauce that's beautifully seasoned and creamy as all get out. One thing that perplexed us was the meat (or lack there of). We thought it would consist of larger chunks, but it was minced. Odd. I also would have enjoyed this one a lot more if the chips weren't so heavily salted. 8 out of 10, the cheese sauce is like liquid gold. Tavern burger: One thing I noticed both here and at the Derry location - not one person had taken a photo of the burgers. Like....ANY of them. So, I'm a guy who likes to view what he's about to get into. Far as first impressions go, this burger looked delectable! I'm talkin' the perfect charred sear, temperature nailed, cheese beautifully melted over top. Not to mention the kaiser rolls they used were brilliantly crisp on the outside, with a soft interior. Thing is....this burger would have been damn near perfect, if not for one thing: it was under seasoned. Quite weird, considering the hand cut fries were well seasoned. 9 out of 10, I'd still get this again and just sprinkle salt on the bottom or something. And for those wondering, wifey enjoyed her salmon salad also. Now then, I came across something peculiar when we first entered the place. When I went to utilize the facilities, one of the restrooms was allegedly closed for maintenance reasons. I say "allegedly" because, turns out....that was only HALF true. You see, their sink was broken. Okay. Fine. Whatever. It would have been helpful if they, ya know....mentioned the sink was broken as opposed to letting everyone THINK the restroom itself was ostensibly closed (as per the sign on the door). The whole thing was misleading and, quite frankly, unnecessary. Felt like a damn goober standing there in front of an almost perfectly functioning restroom. Btw, yes....they had hand sanitizer at the ready to accommodate the lack of sink in one bathroom. Anyway, service was excellent. Just a note though: it's loud as hell in here as you can very well imagine a bar & grill would be. But I weathered the storm easily thanks to my Loop Earplugs (no, that's not a plug. I swear!). So, yeah....overall, not that bad. No where near as bad as some folks suggested. Perhaps that was a different time. In any event, we shall return for future date nights. Till then, Friendly Red's Tavern in Windham is worth 4 bad ass burgers charred to utter perfection out of 5. read more

Love sitting on the patio here in nice weather. Sadly after today this might be the last time. I have been here many times over the years and written good reviews. Today I ordered the habanero steak Caesar salad which I've had many times. Although I ordered the steak medium it was brought out well done. Additionally the lettuce was virtually floating in dressing. Inedible. Now, the scant 3 oz of steak comes sliced and so the chef AND waiter obviously saw that it was black inside, not pink. I wanted to send it back but our waiter never checked on us until the meal was done. Maybe because he knew it was cooked poorly. I waited but finally ate about half and only told him about the problems when he later asked if I wanted to take the rest home. He came back a few minutes later and said he brought it to a managers attention and they agreed it was incorrectly cooked, and they would be giving me a gift card. We paid our bill and waited another 15/20 minutes but he never returned with a gift card so we left. Ps- it wasn't busy. Now, 1. I never return food unless I have confidence in the reliability of the kitchen staff (which I did not here) and 2. Although I didn't have the intention of asking for a refund or gift card, once it was offered by the waiter it should have been presented. $27 for a salad with 3 oz of chewy overcooked beef and half a bottle of dressing is way too much! We had a baby shower at friendly reds Tavern in Windham, New Hampshire this past Sunday. We were in their upstairs function room, which was perfect for our 42 guest. The room was the perfect size and even has a full bar. The food was great. The service was amazing. I highly recommend this venue for next family gathering or functions. read more

My 1st time there Ordered a burger and the thing 99% raw! My son ordered chicken fingers. They were all cut open i assume to see if they were cooked. They did offer something else to replace the burger. However if the kitchen can't cook a burger how could they possibly get anything else correct besides water! read more

I planned a bridal shower at the Windham location of Friendly Red's Tavern and the staff exceeded my expectations! Tammy was an awesome coordinator making sure that every detail was done and making sure the event went smoothly. On the day of the event, Tammy and Jen were awesome hosts making sure that the dining room looked great and they were ready for the guests. The chef did a great job on the food and I got so many compliments on the meal! It was a great way to celebrate my daughter's bridal shower and I highly recommend this venue. (The event was held in the event room on the back side of the building.) Fantastic job all around! Thank you to all the staff! read more

Stopped in while passing through on a Sunday afternoon. Nachos were awesome, nicely melted cheese , crema, avocado , just delicious. Steak tip salad was great , tips were perfect and juicy. Wife had the ultimate chicken sandwich and loved it , nice roll and delicious fries . read more

If I could give zero stars I would. My husband and i walked in. No host was present until we left. Asked a server can we sit wherever she said yes. 3 different servers and a male bartender looked right at us. Nothing. No one came over instead just looked at us. Food was overcooked or not as described(steak tacos were a joke) and prices are high for quality and quantity of food, upper management seemed bothered when presented with these ! Highly recommend the Asian Chicken Salad! This place looks like a bit of a hole in the wall and feels like a neighborhood bar. Stopped here with a group of 8 and was seated immediately. Drinks were strong if not great, and the peppermint mocha martini was a great dessert - the chocolate cake was a close second. My expectations were very low coming here, and as long as you know it ain't fancy and it's basically diner food with a wait staff waiting tables through college, you won't be disappointed! read more

Good food but not so good service and atmosphere. High Prices for what you get. Mrs. StoneOld got a Salad with $12 adder for Sirloin Tips. $2.40 each for 5 tiny little steak tips. SMH. The Chicken Parm Sandwich was very good and the accompanying Sweet Potato Wedges were well worth the extra dollar. Service was spotty as our Server was fairly efficient up until she delivered our meals. She went MIA a couple of times after that and never followed up on our meals until we had almost finished eating. The atmosphere was not good during this visit. The Host appeared visibly annoyed by our request for a Table versus the offered High Top. Mrs. StoneOld had a recent multi level spinal fusion surgery which makes sitting at a High Top a difficult, painful chore. We were "rewarded" with a table directly under a speaker pumping out music at an excruciatingly painful volume. We'll be avoiding this Friendly Red's location as the Customer Experience doesn't seem to be a priority. Not recommended. read more

Giving it a 3 out of 5 because the servers are friendly and the food is good. And they have keno. However, first time bringing my service animal (also sitting outside)... I came in and before I could explain that we wanted a table outside because I have a service animal (with her TAGS) this lady rudely said "WRONG ENTRANCE we do not allow dogs!!" I kindly said she has her tags she is with my husband because of his issue and she said "go outside and sit out there go through that entrance". It would have been a pleasure to have a friendly interaction with a staff member upon arrival considering we are here twice a week. Thats all! read more

Unbelievably, this has happened to us before at this place, in our own hometown of Windham, but we returned after time had passed, and we had good experiences. Until today, Saturday, once again. We went in, it wasn't too busy, there were many empty tables, there were many servers congregating together at the end of the bar, and yet we sat for forty minutes without anyone asking us if we wanted any food. It took 20 minutes, from being seated to actually being asked if we wanted a drink. We could see the servers hanging out and talking, as it's a small enough place and they're not far away, lol. Yet no one made eye contact. We tried. After forty or forty -five minutes, I walked over to the one server that asked us if we wanted a drink, asked for our bill and said we've been here 45 minutes with no one asking us for an order, paid our bill and we left. She gave us the "we're swamped and understaffed" routine, yet it wasn't full at all when we got there, and there were plenty of servers, enough even to visit some other employees at a table near us. It's so sad, because we live here and it was so convenient for us, but if we're going to be dismissed like this, there are certainly other places we can go. And so we will. read more

This is a great little place. Great service and good atmosphere. Bartenders always friendly and don't miss a trick! Food is really great here as well. Went here for lunch and we ordered the chicken parm sandwich. Fries appear homemade, were very good and the chicken was fried well and tender. The sauce was pretty good as well. So if they have a pasta dish I may try one next time. Also ordered a stuffed mushroom which was really good. Definitely a must try. read more

Beautiful night so we sat outside. Our server Matt was very nice and attentive. Started with 2 orders chicken tenders with multi sauces on the side. My partner got the fried chicken Mac and cheese, it was fantastic as always. I got the spinach salad, was so fresh and perfect. My only complaint about the local Reds is to sit inside they are just too loud, you can't talk to the people you're with. read more

We love eating outside at Friendly Red's. Indoor dining is much too noisy for us to enjoy. Favorite meals include the salads with steak tips or salmon, the muffuletta sandwich, and we enjoy the crab cake appetizer. Seasonal drinks are usually good. We were seated immediately on the patio, a lively place with outdoor TV. The waitress was quick to take our orders, but it went downhill from there. The medium rare filets we ordered were well done. The roasted potatoes were mushy, and the vegetable medley, which sounded very high-end with sugar snap peas, carrots, zucchini and squash, was translucent and slimy. The waitress offered for our steaks to be re-done, but we were really hungry and thought we'd just try to eat what we were given. Our out of town guest said that the salmon was pretty good, but also did not eat her sides. About ten minutes later, we gave up and sent our plates back to the kitchen still heaping with food and asked for the check. $140 later, we all left hungry and had to go home to find something to eat. read more

Been here three times in the last month Our rum and Coke was flat and the second one was also flat ? We didn't bring it up a second time;( to me if there is no fizz in the glass, one should be able to tell that. Great limoncello martini. The cavatappi was bland and sauce was runny, but had great ingredients (sun dried tomatoes, pancetta, maybe it was an off night. The acoustics are loud (very loud) here in case that is a distraction for some. Lots of service people and things came out fast. Servers inquired if we were happy and I'd say that's consistent (great service) across the three visits. We also tried the combo app, wasn't crazy about the meatballs, but the potato skins and chicken tenders were super yummy. Chicken Parma sandwich was thoroughly enjoyed! The owner of this business is a very nice guy. If something goes wrong with an order you can be certain that John is going to make it right. Just make sure to speak up. They used to do their own delivery but have switched to DoorDash. This is the reason for the 4 stars vs. 5 stars. The customization on DD is not as easy as working directly through the restaurant. Also, with DD you can't accumulate loyalty points which is another bummer. They handled the pandemic well and hope that once the outside patio is open constantly we can thin out the packs of people inside. read more

My husband and I came here a few weeks ago. The service was very slow but the food was okay so we decided to give it another try today. We waited about 10 minutes before a server greeted us, when she did it felt as if we were an inconvenience to her. We ordered 2 alcoholic beverages and 2 sodas. The 2 sodas never came until we requested them well after our food had arrived. The appetizer (steak and cheese egg rolls) were not good. The meat was very fatty and had a sour taste to it (like the meat was bad). Our server asked why we didn't eat it, so we explained to her what was wrong. She stated she would let a manager know. We were not approached by a manger and the food was not taken off the bill (we took 2 bites out of the appetizer). We then received our food which was again, just ok. The server did not come back to check on us (we needed plates, silverware, ketchup, napkins, the soda we never got). We ordered 2 more drinks which arrived 20 minutes later when we got our bill. All in all, terrible experience; wouldn't recommend coming here. read more

Great burgers, fries and coleslaw. Friendly efficient server, but I didn't hear her name. New Derry location is modern and light. Only thing I would change is the choice of music, it was too loud for my taste and not relaxing. The server did have volume turned down. Will definitely be back for the food and service. read more

I held my fiance's graduation party at the Windham location. We frequent the Derry location as it is close to our home. Tammy, their event coordinator couldn't be more amazing. From start to finish booking and having the event was a breeze! With her help we were able to book everything we wanted. Our event held around 50 people, we had two bartenders and servers and the chef was excellent. Everyone ranted and raved about the food service, their hospitality and how amazing the food was! We had one person with a gluten allergy, and they made her a special plate and even made sure that the steak tips and veggies were not prepared near any allergens. As we were planning this event, I was aware of all the costs and at the end of the night she showed us our itemized receipt of our food choices, open bar etc. They could not be easier too book with, and have an event. Honestly, if any event happens in the future I wouldn't think twice about booking them! They are fantastic. read more
