It's right across from the college campus, and eating here brought back memories of staying out late and having a good meal with friends while in school. Was able to come here mid morning on a weekday, so no problem getting a parking space or table. And quick to get our food too. Ordered the signature cinnamon roll. Holy cow, the thing was huge. Tasted great, can't imagine anyone getting it without the sugar and butter topping. Also got the breakfast burritos with carne adovada. Nice, warm tortilla (made in house?). Fillings were great. I've been coming to the Frontier since the 1970s. Excellent location, right across the street from UNM. Excellent and widely varied menu options. Mexican food is what is to be expected in NM. Wonderful. It's rare for a place to stay in business this long, but they keep providing excellent food, service and atmosphere so why not another 50 years? It was our first night in town and we had been looking forward to some delicious Mexican food. Did some research and decided to try out this place. When we walked in, we were impressed as it was a large restaurant with a line all the way to the entrance door to place your orders. We ordered for take out and got the soft beef tacos, soft chicken tacos, combo plate and horchata. The only item we enjoyed was the horchata. The soft tacos tasted more like pita bread than tacos. We went on an art scavenger hunt at UNM this morning. Since we were in the neighborhood, we had to stop at Frontier for breakfast. This place is an Albuquerque classic, and rightly so - located across from the university and serving great food since 1971. My husband had the carne adovada breakfast burrito, which was really tasty - spicy but not so much that you can't feel your tastebuds after a bite. I had the #1 breakfast special - two eggs (over easy, please), hash browns, sausage patties, and one of their fabulous fresh tortillas. It was delicious. This place is so good, so glad we stopped here during our visit. It is quite the operation, everything is so organized and efficient. After ordering they give you a number and call out the number when it's ready. It took about 10 minutes to get the order, and the restaurant was consistently full. The food was really good and flavorful, I didn't think the chile was all that spicy and I don't typically like spicy food. This spot is a hit among locals and college kids alike - and know I see why! We stopped in on a busy Friday morning and was welcomed with a long line - which is always a sign of good eats - and after a mere 7 minutes, we were at the front of the line! It's an order at the counter, pay and find yourself a seat kind of place, which seems to work well for the establishment, as everything maneuvered like a well oiled machine. Open 5am-11pm with breakfast served all day, there is literally something on the menu for everyone. Because we were there around 10am, we all opted for breakfast items and after placing our order, secured a spot in the rear of the MASSIVE indoor space (seriously huge) and waited a mere 15 minutes before our number was displayed on the kiosk notifying us our food was ready for pickup! Dad and I rounded up the dishes on old school cafeteria trays and made our way back to feast - which was definitely needed at that time to soak up all the fun from the night before. I'll admit, the food is BOMB. I opted for the NO. 7 WESTERN OMELETTE - which featured three eggs, green chile & cheddar cheese, served with tomato, hash browns & flour tortilla, while my husband settled on the NO. 2 ONE EGG - which included bacon ham, sausage or carne adovada, hash browns and flour tortilla. My parents opted for a mixture eggs otherwise and mom got the signature breakfast burrito. Everything was massive in size, freshly made and tasted delicious. The green chili is the star of the place as it packs a punch and makes me want to drown everything in it! For the quality and size I was surprised to see how cheap our bill was - just $25 with drinks for 2! Talk about a killer deal! Ever see those bars on a busy boulevards with long. lines of people, but once you get in, you're disappointed to see hardly anyone inside? That's almost what this feels like. Long lines begets more customers. Maybe it's curious onlookers, maybe it's misinformation. The food is fine, but not good. Not great. Fresh tortillas sure, but not authentic fresh tortillas. Fresh food, but authentic? Depends on the source of authenticity: it's not authentic Mexican food, but it is authentic south west food. And I think there's the rub: line peaks curiosity, food is passable, but that's where it ends. Go to say you went, not because the food is something special. read more

The Frontier is an interesting experience. I was told you had to eat here when in ABQ. I wasn't expecting to order from a counter. The menu isn't explained well. I wish I would've known the breakfast burrito didn't come smothered but the food was really good. I'm sure if I was a local I'd have a better idea of how to properly order. read more

Great diner across from the University. Students were well behaved, staff was friendly, service was efficient and food was cheap. The tortillas are perfection. Get a breakfast taco or burrito. The burgers were overcooked and the nachos were okay. But we'll be back for the laid back feel and excellent tortillas. The best thing about this place is it's open later than most restaurants in ABQ, midnight I think. My first time trying it, as the reviews seemed ok. You stand in line and order and pick up your food when your number is called. I asked the cashier what was the best thing to try. She said the frontier burrito. It was big and looked appetizing, but was bland as it gets. Ground beef and cheese and some sauce. The chips and salsa tasted like they were from a bag and jar. Definitely not homemade. I could be mistaken. They don't serve beer or wine but that was ok. Being from San Diego, I have a certain expectation, I suppose. I discovered this landmark restaurant through my husband many years ago. He had traveled to visit his friend and when he came home he had brought me the best buttery sweet goodness in the form of sweet rolls that I had ever tasted. They are just not overly glazed and they literally melt in your mouth! The Frontier restaurant is in their 50th year and celebrating. I had a few locals recommend it so it was top of my list. This cafe offers many local treats such as green chili and everything topped with hatch chili. You order at a counter and then wait for your number to be called. The crowd is a mix of college students and large families. Food: I ordered a small green chili which came with a warm tortilla. A warm rolled sweet bun and hatch chili and cheese hash browns. All of this was about $11 which was very affordable coming from LA. The small green chili was the perfect size and made up of ground beef and some veggies. It was missing a pop, perhaps add some acidity from tomatillos (not me giving free recipes). The sweet roll was tasty, best enjoyed warm on the spot. You can request to have them give it to you after your meal. The cheese and chili really elevated the hashbrowns. The hashbrowns themselves were missing some crispiness and salt. Now this is a place I could frequent if I lived in New Mexico. It seems like a combination of a fast food and diner. We arrived and paid for parking on the street. When trying new places one of my favorite things to do is ask what they recommend. The guy literally said "oh, I don't know". I said well what's your favorite on an enchilada, red or green? He said "I don't know I haven't had them and don't eat it." I let the rest of my family order as I went back to help to see what people suggested. I ordered the enchilada Christmas style. He then told me the sauces would be mixed, I asked if they could do green on one side, red on the other and he said no they are mixed (that's not what others posted on here). I ordered the Bonanza burger, which has double meat, American cheese, 1000 island dressing, tomato, pickles, onions & lettuce. I ordered mine with extra dressing. The burger was good. Of course, during these uncertain times it is hard to find places to dine at and dine indoors. Thankfully, Frontier was open enough and we were able to order and find a seat and get to enjoy our delicious food. The menu offers a variety of items from Breakfast favorites, Lunch items and of course that New Mexican cuisine. Today, I ordered half of the beef enchiladas since the full order is too much for me to eat. I also got one of their famous cinnamon rolls which is a great treat to eat at the end of the meal. The staff is very friendly and we enjoyed the ambiance. The parking might be hard to find if the restaurant is very busy.
