We got diverted to Tampa and decided to make the drive to Orlando but first we needed somewhere to eat. Wanting to avoid chain restaurants, yelp steered us towards this little local gem! The ladies had the 7 oz. Tampa strip and the gents both had a 14 oz. ribeye. They grill their steaks over oak and citrus Wood and the smoky flavor is to die for! We are big fans of our smoker back home and cook our steaks this way as well, it's rare to find steak cooked over woodsmoke in most places and this was worth the side trip! Sides were veggies and sweet potatoes. The wines on offer were so reasonably priced- most under $20 a bottle but a decent selection. They just don't mark them up 5x like most places! Our waitress Lisa also made great recommendations and her service was welcoming, friendly, and excellent. We are so glad we went local instead of to a chain. Bookmarking this place for a return trip next time I am in Tampa for sure! read more

I went here tonight because I was feeling like a steak... and they delivered! The location really is out of the way... you would never know that it even really existed were it not for a sign out by the main road. Driving up it definitely feels like country place, and the décor inside matches. Horns and saddles on the wall, country music playing on the sound system. I ordered the Cowboy, which is a 32oz porterhouse, and I was not deprived. It comes with a salad and a side (fries, baked potato, or something else). I chose the baked potato without going fully loaded, as I already had a huge steak coming to me. The potato was beautifully done, and lasted pretty much throughout the steak. The salad was also decent for a simple side salad. The steak was a monster. Definitely worth it though, as it was done perfectly and had a very good taste to it. I would be willing at some time to take on their 6 lb challenge, but something makes me think that I wouldn't finish the whole thing...However, it is obvious that I can easily get through at least half of that challenge without any issues. I would certainly go back here again, and might do so if I can convince a friend of mine to go for the 6lb challenge at some point. read more

First time here with a group of 10 to celebrate a retirement. Everything was average from the ambience and service to the food. When I say average in relation to the food, it means that a few people had some really well prepared steaks while others were served steaks severely overcooked and not even resembling the cut of meat they ordered. My ribeye was obviously from the end cut and had gristle and just a few areas of edible steak and cooked way beyond the medium rare I requested. The wait staff was a bit gruff at first but once things got rolling, they leaned into their jobs and kept the drinks flowing which helped offset the miserable experience others had with their meals. I can't say I will be returning anytime soon but really wish we could have all enjoyed the same quality of food at the same time. For the record, the restaurant wasn't busy at all with only about 30% of the tables occupied. Should have seen a lot better food and service considering the low capacity. read more

So, after years of thinking "man that looks like an interesting place to try" we finally got the chance to test new waters. Overall the experience was very good. We went pretty early for dinner, so the restaurant was empty. I ordered the ribeye and wife got the kabab with peppers and onions. Both steaks cooked perfect. Side items included potato, salad, and rolls. Now, if your not a fan of the smokey flavor steak this place probably isn't for you. The pit flame grilling gives the steak a distinctive smoke flavor. Personally, I thought it was delicious but my wife didn't like it as much as I did. Waitress' were very nice and checked on us through our time. Price was compared to other steakhouses. Now, my only gripe and the reason it didn't get 5 stars: the kids menu SUCKS they had a burger, grilled cheese, and chicken fingers. That's it. Side items: frys, or mixed veggies. No simple Mac and cheese, not even plain green beans. Seems like they could develop a better menu for the kiddos. Overall pretty good and glad we tried it out. read more

I was skeptical with dining at Frontier Steakhouse, the outside as well as inside hasn't been renovated in decades, not 1 not 2 not 3! Looks like a 60's-70's style restaurant. The restaurant wasn't busy probably because the prices were grossly high for the quality of beef being served. Service was good but the food as a whole was a disappointment. It's been 20 years since we last ate here. No excuses still is great! I hade the junior cowboy medium well and it was perfect! Enjoyed the naked potato loaded but would order with just butter next time. Wife had Fredericksburg let and lobster tail. Filet was ordered medium rare and it was spot on too. Filed melted in your mouth. Lobster was good but steak was better. House Cesar was good but get dressing in side so you can flavor to taste. The ambiance at the Frontier Steak house is that of 70's era crap. An ugly red floor personifies the facelift this restaurant needs. It's bright, it's gaudie with the cliche bull horns, wagon wheels lights and ugly tables. I almost bet myself that the salad dressing for my salad would come in a plastic container, as it did. So clearly ambiance is that of a school house cafeteria, or equivalent to one star. The service, well there was only five people in the restaurant, so it was excellent, plastic containers and all. Are waitress was nice and efficient, she did say a party of fifty was expected. The food: I had the thirty two oz Porterhouse and a sweet potatoe. The porterhouse was a work of grill master art. It was beyond good, cooked to perfection. You won't find that type of steak at any Morton's, Burn's or The Palm. Credit must go to where credit is due, I tip my hat. The sweet potatoe, eeeehhh not so much. Would I go back, yes definaty. Would I take a date, no not a chance. Would I take my wife of I were married, sure. Why, no one to impress. This was at one point a 5 star joint in my opinion! It has changed ownership it seems like a lot over the decade. It is your local steakhouse when you do not want a chain steakhouse which is my favorite type! They used to have a guy come in and play music at least 15yrs ago and it was nice. Their cuts of meat were always mouth watering! I mean they have cows in the damn pasture right next to the place. You can wave to what will soon be on your plate! I did try the 6lb challenge here! Ya I got about 4lbs down. So I fell way short. However i did have left overs for the next week. Their steak has always been cooked perfectly for me. The Cowboy is usually what I get. If you are an effete, "Upper Crust," snob about dining, then do not bother to visit Frontier Steakhouse Cattle Co. As many other reviewers already pointed out, the ambiance is 70's BBQ, Pinnacle Peak's, Road House, or other similar "Western-style" steakhouses. This is not Houstons, Ruth's Chris, The Palm, nor is this Bern's. However, if you are like me and love a perfectly cooked good quality steak prepared over a live wood fire grill; if you love that slight char and wood smoke flavor that only real wood can deliver, then Frontier is probably the kind of place for you. The steak, I got a 14 oz Ribeye, was perfectly cooked to medium. It was properly trimmed with a little fat left on but not too much. It was warm, juicy, slightly charred, and wonderfully smokey. This was one of the best steaks I have had in a very long time from a restaurant and had a far better taste than the steak I recently had at Bern's. The salad was not wilted or soggy, but it was likely purchased already cut up and packaged in a large plastic bag -- exactly like the old fashioned road house style places. The Blue Cheese dressing was probably commercial as well, but not bad. Neither was the bread stale or hard. Fresh, commercially prepared Parker House rolls were served warm with real butter. I ordered French Fries and received them hot, right from the fryer and they were perfectly crunchy outside and soft inside. Yes, these too probably came from a plastic freezer bag bought from a commercial provider. The people eating at Frontier appeared to be largely local work-class people, a few young couples, and a few others like me who had probably driven some distance to try out Frontier. This is a meat eating mans man kind of place. There is no pretense, just excellently prepared steaks served hot and juicy. read more

A bit of country kitsch in the decor and hokey hats and jeans for the wait staff, but you can't fault the steaks (which are fabulous), and the sides are good too. Baked potatoes are fluffy and hot, rolls are fresh baked, and the salad was adequate despite being basic iceberg lettuce with minimal other veggies. Great, awesome, incredible steak! Salad was fresh and served on a cold plate. Bread was warm and the baked potato was perfect. The meal was so good it's hard to say whether the service or the food was better. Every staff member greeted me with a smile and had my requests to me in seconds! Unfortunately, the bar area is being remodeled. There is a fine line to keeping with the times and maintaining rustic value. I tend to lean more toward rustic for a cowboy steak house. I love this place! Only downfalls I can see: Lights are too bright. Decor seems like a rustic place attempting to keep with the time s. I'd like to see an old saddle, more wood, relic old school stuff. This place should stay away from the norm and be rustic. The crowd here is older, which is no problem. Definitely an old school steak house. The decor is a throwback to the 1970s. It a spacious dining room and you can definitely have a nice quiet conversation here. The wait staff is very accommodating, extremely helpful and prompt. I just really wish the food matched the prices. I had the 14oz Ribeye, and while it was not a bad steak, it wasn't a $27 steak. Slightly over cooked for my liking and just lacked a good beef steak flavor (that goodness for A1 sauce). I ordered sautéed mushrooms with my steak too, what I got appeared and tasted like canned mushrooms that spent a minute in some type of flavorless oil, not cooked long enough to bring out that flavor you're looking for in sautéed mushrooms. My wife had the half rack of ribs. They were good but not great, a bit in the fatty side. All in all, not a bad experience, but not a $65 dinner. LongHorn Steakhouse is better and I've discussed my issues with them previously. I'll go back again, but only if it's someone's birthday and they insist. read more

We tried this place, using Yelp to find something close by the Tampa Hardrock that might be a hidden jewel. The prices were as much as Longhorn and other steakhouses. The decor is something I haven't seen since the 70's or 80's; definitely an old building. My father and brother had the ribs and they looked good and they said they tasted fine. They seemed the best bang for the book. The wife and I had the rib-eyes and the steaks seemed awfully small compared to the same size steak at other steak houses. The wife complained that is was quite plain. Service was terribly slow and they weren't that busy. We almost walked out at the beginning. They did apologize but it didn't get any better for the most part. We wouldn't ever consider going back. read more

Awesome steak! My husband had the cowboy (32oz porterhouse) and I had the rib-eye. They were both so tender and cooked to perfection. Everything about the food was wonderful. The waitress was nice, but she was so busy. Seemed like there was only 2 waitresses for the whole restaurant, so she was running around like crazy and when i started to ask some questions about the different steaks, she was not happy and rushed through it. I didn't even want to ask her anything, just ordered and really enjoyed the food. Overall awesome place, but wish the waitress would of been a bit more helpful. read more

This place didn't look like much from the sign advertising it on 301, but I'm really happy that I went here. The prices are reasonable, the steak was absolutely fantastic, and the staff was nice. The dinner comes with a salad and bread as well as a side, so portions quickly fill you up. The waitress said they use some sort of citrus wood to cook the steak in the fire with, and it added a really good flavor to the steak- no steak sauce needed. I can't wait to go back read more

Unsweetened ice tea came like water so I sent it back for water. No sense paying for tea . Someone else at other table said the same thing. Food came fast. Steak was great Bake potato came with a yellowish butter like stuff on it even as it was ordered on the side as I do butter only. But as I said the steak was very good. Nice smokey flavor. My wife and I had dinner at the Frontier Steak House for the second time this weekend. I'm not sure we've ever had a better tasting steak than at each of these visits. It looked spectacular, was tender and juicy, and was cooked to perfection. Our gracious host, Nancy, was kind enough to take us back into the kitchen after our meal to reveal part of the secret. All of their steaks are cooked over a wood-fired open flame oven - a rarity. Whatever the chef magic, the flavor was incredible. On both occasions we split a 32 oz. porterhouse, called the "Cowboy". I think this was the best value on the menu, when we each had a very thick 16 oz. steak dinner for $20 a plate, accompanied by potato and salad. When judging a steakhouse, it's important to put them in context. Frontier is not a special occasion, tie and jacket, reservations only restaurant. Neither is it a bargain barn, serving low quality cuts. It is a mid-level, down-home steakhouse. I believe their steaks far exceed the quality of the Bay area's chain establishments. After reading some of the previous Yelp reviews, it's hard to believe we're talking about the same restaurant. Give it a try. read more
