Tonight my son brought home chicken tenders, fries and Cole slaw. The chicken tenders were very tender. The coating did not have a lot of flavor and was not my favorite fried chicken. The fries for all three of us were very over cooked, most of them were inedible. The Cole slaw was bland and had no flavor. Coop sauce is basically thousand island dressing but still good. 85 was definitely messy towards the end. The mild spice was def mild, didn't seem spicy at all. I am so glad I'm finally super close to one of these locations of these bad boys! The Nashville medium is the perfect amount of spice with extra pickles -- best order. Heard a lot about this place so happy I finally got the chance to check it out. I've been to Nashville and had legit fried chicken so I was hoping for a similar experience here. I got the classic Nashville Fried Chicken Sandwich and had mixed feelings about it. I thought the chicken itself was moist and cooked well but there was a ton of oil coated on it and you could taste it as well. This took a lot away from the mouthfeel of the chicken. The slaw was cool and refreshing and the brioche bun was airy and light; these paired well. I got my chicken in the 'medium' heat level and didn't feel much? Maybe I'll opt for one or two levels up next time. The fries were fairly average, nothing special. I've been here a few times since they have opened. I usually get the Nashville fried chicken sandwich. The sandwich overall isn't bad. I do think they are not consistent when it comes to the seasoning of the the sandwich. I usually stick with the medium spice level but the last time I got it it was not spicy at all. I got it again today and it was a lot better. From a price point perspective I do think it's over priced. Originally I used to drive down to the Oak Lawn location since it was a decent sandwich and it was priced around 8.50. I got an email recently from fry the coop stating they lowered their prices but I realized their new price 10.95 is still more than what they originally had. First off, I'm shocked I haven't written this place a review yet, as I've been coming here for almost 2 years now! I LOVE Fry the Coop. This sandwich was my gateway drug to Nashville hot chicken, and I've yet to find a better sandwich. They fry everything in beef fat (No Seed Oils!)and cook everything ridiculously hot and fresh every time I'm in there. On my last visit they were absolutely packed, and they still had relatively fast service and the same high quality product with high quality ingredients that I've learned to expect from them. It's hard to miss off of Milwaukee with a super big and bright LED Fry the Coop sign, and inside they have chairs and tables with booths and unique Chicago and local themed decor. In the past, I've tried their tender plate, Nashville hot sandwich, spicy butter sandwich, and messy fries, but it's clear you can't go wrong with anything on this menu. They also serve beer on tap, which is rare from a fast casual counter service restaurant. This place is great and always scratches my chicken sandwich itch, and even though I'm not super big into spice, the mild sandwich hits the spot every time. Can't wait for my next visit! read more

Chicken that's supposed to be the star of the show failed to perform. Why I say chicken is meh. It's too average. It's heavy on black pepper seasoning in the breading. I ordered Mild for the flavor of the tender and did not appreciate the powdery sauce that was put on it. It was so gritty every-time I took a bite from the tender. If I ever come back it's going to be country style. The coleslaw was not so bad itself even if I could see tons of black pepper it wasn't overpowering like it was in the chicken breading itself. I actually liked how the dressing in it was thicker not watered down like other places usually have their coleslaw done. Mac and cheese was not bad either I did appericate them not putting black pepper in the pasta dish. Let's talk about the fries. There was no long cuts to pick up and munch on in any of our fries. It was full of Tiny bits of fries? Is that normal? Lol. But hey it was still crispy and perfectly cooked so what to complain about? I used utensil in order to enjoy my fries to work around that challenge of tiny pieces as I'm not the patient eater to eat one bit at a time. Now let's gripe about the choice of location this chain choose: Ok but why do restaurants try to survive on that awful location? I've seen this particular building go through several different restaurants in 18 years I've been at my workplace. It's really a tricky location to try to get to and out of on Milwaukee ave. And barely anyone in the parking lot when we got there at 5 would be a major clue how much of an hassle it is to get there and out of. Yes lucky we are able to turn left from willow to get there and turn right onto Milwaukee to still get another road back to our place. As a customer I usually do not frequent businesses who choose to have a Pain in the neck spot to get in/out of. Best of luck! read more

Next on our list to try was Fry the Coop. This was a brand new location so when we went there was only the option to order via their drive-thru. Hubby had a mild Nashville fried chicken sandwich (coleslaw, pickles, special sauce, and brioche bun) while I had the chicken and cheese sandwich (medium spice level). We shared a side of cheese fries. We both enjoyed our own chicken sandwiches. The chicken sandwich was a decent size and the flavor was good. I could tell that there was a kick to my chicken sandwich at medium spice level but it wasn't obvious to me unless I actually thought about it. Next time I will definitely get the Nashville chicken sandwich since I had a bite of hubby's and the coleslaw gave the sandwich a nice crunch (normally I don't even like coleslaw). Pretty pricey for a chicken sandwich, fries and bottomless drink - $19 and some change overall. I ordered my sandwich medium spicy - there are about five levels and medium was smack dab in the middle of them. Now, this is subjective but the medium level barely had any zip to it - I was kind of surprised at that. The sandwich itself was good - there's an independent chicken place that I've visited whose chicken is better, but they do tend to lay the breading on a bit thicker than Coop... so I'd give Coop the nod on the breading factor. But between this place and the independent (Angry Egg), I'm more partisan to the latter. About a $4 price difference, though just a can of pop at Angry Egg rather than unlimited. I don't think Fry the Coop will be in business much longer, at least not the one in Prospect Heights, IL. It's not that the chicken sandwiches are horrible, mind you. It's just too damn expensive to justify an otherwise fast-food offering. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed (past tense) the Medium (heat) Butter Chicken Sandwich. It wasn't bad--in fact, quite delicious. BUT, paying $21.00 for a chicken sandwich, a watery cup of mac & cheese, and a soft drink is entirely beyond the pale. It's outrageous. And I don't want to hear about supply chain issues and rising costs. Figure it out. It also takes a lifetime to pay for and receive your food in the drive-thru, and that's if it's OPEN! Sometimes they place orange cones in the drive-thru lane, presumably because of staffing issues. I once timed the service at 22 minutes; I only have a one-hour lunch break. Nope, that place will be boarded-up FOR GOOD by December, 2022.
