It had been years since I was last at Frying Pan, but I found it as cool as ever! I absolutely adored the fact that you could explore various areas of the ship and its attached dinghies. The bar was the perfect outdoor venue for a beautiful, sunny day, and its views of the Hudson River could not be beat. The space was good for large or small groups, but it could get loud in some areas. They offered coolers of complementary water, which came in handy when drinking fun cocktails in the heat. I ordered a Don Julio and club soda, which was potently stocked with half a glass of tequila. I also tried their Chelsea Ranch Water, which included 21 Seeds jalapeno tequila, lime juice, and club soda; it was essentially a skinny, spicy margarita. I loved its balance of heat and freshness. From their food menu, all I had sampled were the fries, which were perfectly crisp and salty, but expensive at $7 for a small cup. Frying Pan is just such an unusual and cool seasonal venue, that I think it is an absolute must. I will say that if you are prone to sea sickness, you might want to keep your visit short, as the boat can rock a bit at times. read more

We were able to snag a table on the side of the boat with an amazing view of the waterfront. There's no table service. You have to order food and drinks at the bar. After ordering and paying, you're handed a buzzer. We ordered the fish tacos, seafood bake and a lobster BLT. The lobster BLT had huge chunks of lobster and each bite was the perfect bite. One of my favorite summer spots in the city. Love coming here in the hot summer months for the views, the cooling breeze blowing in off the water, the crush of people out having fun, and the ambiance. The food is meh, though I do enjoy the bar bites (french fries and easy finger foods), it's more of a spot to meet up friends for drinks before going to dinner somewhere else. I've brought out of town friends here to grab drinks and joy a different view of the city that they didn't think to add to their sightseeing tour. The ordering system seems to change here a lot, maybe due to Covid (self serve, partial self serve, fully served by waitstaff etc). When we went, online ordering was disabled and it was very casual. You order at the bar and then you get a text when your food is ready at the kitchen for pick up. Utensils and a variety of condiments (ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, etc) are available for you to take. You seat yourself anywhere there's an open table. The food itself was fine. We both got fish sandwiches and shared a side of fries. Honestly the food wasn't super memorable, but the pricing was pretty reasonable and the view was really nice. If it wasn't for the great views on the waterfront, it would be closed. The experience I had was unconscionable. We were greeted at the front by a charming host who advised us of where we could and couldn't sit. He also advised us that we needed to go to the bar to order our food and beverages. We thanked him and made our way to the back deck right near the water where the views were fantastic. We made our way back to the bar to order our food and drinks (3 burgers, 1 chicken sandwich, fried calamari, 2 long Island Ice teas, a bottle of beer and a coke) the bill for this was $171.00, of which a tip/ gratuity menu below comes up with %18-%20-%25.. I'm not tipping someone at amount if he's just pushing buttons. A $15 dollar gratuity was sufficient for just putting in our order. While heading back to our table, we were stopped by an employee (no name given) who advised their roping off the deck for an event scheduled at 12:30... mind you, it's 11:30am. I asked the gentleman why were we advised that the deck was opened until 1:30pm. He said that was incorrect information that we were given and we had to move to smaller tables inside near the bar area. I had asked to speak to a manager and was pointed in the direction of "MANNY". I walked up to Manny and advised him of what happened and told him as a fellow restauranteur that this was I em acceptable to tell patrons one thing, then advise them they can't even though there was 2 hours before they had to have the deck for the private affair. All MANNY did was smile and say, "I'm sorry that you feel that way.." I had asked for his last name and/or a business card and he sarcastically told me that his email was info@fryingpan.com. I told him that he, as a manager shouldn't be so caustic especially when someone is trying to tell them from a restaurant manager background, but my advisement fell on deaf ears.... Now to the food. The burgers were orders as medium rare and came Pittsburgh well... I kid you not.... The chicken sandwich was dry and overcooked as well and the calamari was inedible because it was like rubber. However, something about the sun and sitting on the top deck (with a resy) had me feeling a little queasy. Once we got our order in and ate I felt much better but I don't know that I would want to eat on the top deck again. The waiter was very friendly and kind when offering recommendations. I ordered the lobster roll with fries which was very fresh and did not disappoint. A pretty penny though- just know you're paying for the experience on top of the food! Three words can sum up our Frying Pan experience: "Waiting For Disappointment." My friend and I walked up to the hostess at the front of the deck and gave her our name on a Saturday night. She told us for a party of 2 it would take roughly 20 minutes which did not sound like a bad estimation at all. However, the actual waiting was closer to 40 minutes. After we got a text saying our table was reading we walked in to find a second guy asking again for our name and telling us to go to to a third (??) host station. (Side note: The guy at the second podium was super nice and friendly - he was honestly the best part of our meal lol.) Afterwards, when we got to the third podium we had to wait another 10 minutes again. I'm not sure why they set everything up like that because it is very frustrating. Afterwards, we were brought up to the top deck. We were told to order and pay from a QR code. We started out with a cocktail. Afterwards, we ended waiting around another 30 minutes for our food and the food we received was not worth waiting for. FISH AND CHIPS: The fried fish was ok not the freshest quality. The fish and surprisingly tartar sauce were very bland. The fries were ok but kind of cold and soggy like they were sitting out for a while before getting it. Additionally, it came with a small container of cole slaw which was also bland as well. CALAMARI: My friend liked their calamari but I thought it was just average. The sauce it came with wasn't that good and the giant smattering of tomatoes at the bottom were kind of weird. Again, the food was kind of lukewarm when we started eating. MUSSELS: I've never seen croutons with mussels but even though that was a random addition it ended up being my favorite part of the dish. The mussels themselves were big but didn't taste very fresh. The curry base was also not very well done. Again, food was lukewarm. CLAM CHOWDER: AHH DISGUSTING STAY AWAY! The chowder wasn't even thick. It tasted like water and milk mixed in with some small smatterings of clam. And again there was very bland. All in all, the only thing this restaurant has going for it is the novelty aspect of the set up but everything else was a huge disappointment. Definitely not worth the time or money. read more

The food is decent, we got the fish and chips and the lobster roll and recommend the former. Drinks are ok as well. However the menu at this time is pretty limited with a lot of items marked out of stock. 3.5 stars for food. In terms of the service, it was pretty nonexistent for dining in. You order from your cellphone by scanning a qr code, prepay including tip, and someone brings you your food. All the food and drinks come in disposable silverware. The waitstaff never came back to check on us after bringing the order, and we had to literally wave them over for things like ketchup. This is a nice location to take in a view of The Hudson River. The history of this light ship that was retrieved from the hudson and rehabilitated to be a bar / restaurant is interesting . I had a glass of wine and a tuna cauliflower sandwich. Both were fine . By New York standards given the view, the prices were reasonable. I love walking the Hudson Greenway. I've been coming the pan for 6 or 7 years now and I've never had a bad experience! Their food is great - we always get the fish & chips with old bay fries or calamari, they have a lot of different options though (lobster rolls/tacos/salads). *THEY HAVE THE BEST BLOODY MARY IN THE WORLD* This is not an exaggeration. I recently found out what they put into their Mary, which is a game changer, but we are Bloody Mary people and theirs is #1. The vibe is very laidback, we do try to avoid weekends when it's b&t/tourist crowd (pre-covid) but when things get back to normal, know it's very busy on the weekends. In terms of covid, they were regimented in their precautions. The tables are more than 6ft apart, we even thought they could add more tables and still be compliant to restrictions but it was VERY spaced out. You now order and pay on your phone and your order comes out unusually fast. We were seated and had a waiter so we didn't order through the app. The inside is nice and we were on the stage so we could see the water/view. The food was given to us with plastic utensils and a paper plate. Very covid-esque, not sure if they normally use silverware. Drinks were kinda meh and came plastic glasses ($14 each). But... the lobster roll was great ($26)! Lots of lobster and big claw chunks too. The bread could have been better quality but overall it was tasty and a good deal (used to lobster roll prices in Boston and it can really get up there). The fries were also delicious and had a little coating of spices. They told us about the 90 min limit but didn't enforce it. The barge will move around a bit so this probably isn't the best choice for those who are prone to seasickness. We enjoyed it and I'd recommend for food but skip drinks. read more

I guess we came here at the right time because the roof was empty. An hour later it was packed! I guess the trick is to come here an hour and a half before sunset.
