Saturday was a nice day to come into Fugetsu in Sunnyvale. Especially when you come in early. I had gotten there with my friend around 11:30am when they first opened and they were able to seat us right away. The menu was quite big and honestly a little overwhelming but it wasn't too bad especially since most of the menu was covered with pictures so you'd be able to see what you were ordering. They also had a special menu that gave you another option at trying their signature Okonomiyaki's with the chance to try all 4 of them in a smaller form factor served as a sampler. Which is what I got but only 2 of the samplers which were the Gyusuki and Negi. Also a side of Edamame, which wasn't on the menu so you can just ask for it. Really liked these smaller portion sampler plates as it gave me the experience of an okonomiyaki but not on the larger scale. NOTE: You can't make it a modanyaki on the sampler ones as they're too small. Just as a heads up. The edamame was also large in quantity so that was really nice to take home. Would definitely come back next time and try out their modanyaki and other items as everything looked good. Fugetsu is actually located inside Rokko and they're shared with no differences, so just look for Rokko when you're looking for the restaurant. We were seated quickly and the menu had lots of variety. We tried the takoyaki, a sushi roll, the modanyaki, and the yakisoba. The food came out fairly quickly, and all the dishes were good. The takoyaki was flavorful, the sushi roll was generously sized and tasted great too. I enjoyed the modanyaki and the yakisoba, though they were a tad on the salty side for me personally. My friends and I wanted to come here for dinner on a Friday evening. We were seated quickly and the staff easily made room for when my boyfriend arrived. We ordered a variety of things. They give you a fantastic amount of fish with any raw fish items. I ordered the tuna nigiri and the tuna slices were thick! It was delicious even though the wasabi underneath totally overwhelmed me. All of us got a variation of the okonomiyaki/modanyaki. These take about 25-30 minutes to be ready so be prepared to wait. Another thing to note is that there is a difference between okonomiyaki and modanyaki. The okonomiyaki doesn't come with yakisoba/the noodles, whereas the modanyaki does. The modanyaki is more of the Osaka style and the okonomiyaki is more Tokyo style. One of my friends and I ordered the okonomiyaki sampler and didn't know that we could've ordered it in the modanyaki way. We all definitely prefer the modanyaki and I highly recommend you start with that over the okonomiyaki. Our only issue with these were that the sauce was a bit much. The karaage was okay, the meat was a bit juicy, the sauce was mild and forgetable. The spicy tuna was pretty good. Okonomiyaki, where have you've been all my life? I wish I could buy a ticket to Japan and try all the different varieties of this dish. It is so scrumptious and delectable. The sauce mixed in with the toppings and the sizzling platter that makes the bottom layer toasty...I am addicted. I ordered the deluxe okonomiyaki and it was sooooo yummy. The seafood and pork were an interesting combination. It's a filling dish and although it does not appear to be very large, I was quite full and ended up with leftovers. This restaurant shares space with Rokko and the staff are very friendly and courteous. The one thing I find a pain is parking in downtown Sunnyvale, especially with the construction. Since I was super hungry by the time I got my food, I decided to find a nice bench by the Caltrain station & eat my okonomiyaki. I must say the portion is pretty good for $19 okonomiyaki. However, the yakisoba was super dry and some were way overcooked to the point of crispy noodle! To start, my friends and I ordered the chicken karage and to my surprise, this is one of the few places that actually includes the chicken skin as well! The texture was crispy, but could use a little more meat on the chicken. Now for the star of the show: okonomiyaki. I've never had this dish before but just like other Japanese dishes, you really can't go wrong. I added noodles to mine that helped made the dish a bit more hardy, but honestly, the cabbage fills you up. The sauce is a typical sweet teriyaki sauce and they load up the seafood. Kinda bummed since all the reviews rave about the okonomiyaki here but most of the food we got was a miss. We got chicken karage, cheetama okonomiyaki, and the yakisoba noodles with shrimp and scallops and tbh only the chicken karage was good. The okonomiyaki was way too sweet and it's supposed to be crispy but the one we got was all mushy, and they somehow ran out of sriracha and didn't have anything else that could make it spicier. Fugetsu is part of another restaurant so we were a bit confused since there wasn't a storefront sign, but they do have menus posted outside so that's how we got in. The wait was not that long during peak dinner rush for a party of 4 - probably about a 20-30 min wait. We ordered a feast! We got the deluxe okonomiyaki and gyuniku negitama okonomiyaki both modan style, chanpon yakisoba, and negimayo shiosoba to share. I highly recommend the modan style since it has the noodles on the bottom which gets super crispy with the hot place. It does take a bit longer but I feel like it's well worth the wait! The yakisoba was good, but I do recommend getting a bit of variety to switch up the flavor palette. The sauce is a bit overpowering and can get redundant when you order multiple dishes with the same sauce. My favorites were the negimayo shiosoba and the gyuniku negitama okonomiyaki! Located inside Rokko (their a combined business) I walked in to order takeout at 6:45 pm Fri, the order took 45 mins. They are busy and a bit short staffed. I asked for sauce on the side in case it gets too salty, they forgot my sauce Pork Okonomiyaki $15: no clue where the pork was. The entire pancake had 1 tiny fatty piece of pork that I spat out anyway. It was literally a cabbage and egg batter pancake. Decent size, but no meat. Rip off Gyusuki Modanyaki $23.50: this had a good portion of beef/grilled onions and noodles on top of the usual pancake. The beef was like 75% fat though. I didn't eat most of it. I asked for no egg. Nothing special about the noodles, just regular thick chow mein noodles Total came out to $42 for mostly cabbage and egg batter. While it did taste good and had a nice crispy top layer, it was terrible value for mostly vegetables. The portion size was fine but men will likely need more food if they only eat 1. The Modanyaki is basically just basic noodles added to Okonomiyaki. Definitely skippable. Definitely not going back. Will wait until the real thing when I go to Japan Also, if you order online via their website, these items are both cheaper. So I put in an order on 12/24/20 at 1:30 PM which went through and sent me a confirmation requesting I pick up after 1:50 PM at the Santa Clara location. We got there, and to our surprise, the store was closed with a sign saying "Closed for Christmas Eve & Christmas." So we called multiple tims, check the website, and waited a bit in case someone came out. We almost ordered 99 Chicken next door but decided to check the San Jose location to see if they had our order. Got there around 2:30 PM and it seems like they didn't get our order either. They took our order down and said they would work on it right away - the onigiri since they didn't have the ingredients to make it there. At that point, we were pretty hungry since we just came from a 2 hr hike. It took them ~35 minutes to make the order so we went to get drinks at N7 and pick up a cake at Paris Baguette. When we pick up the food, they profusely apologized for the inconvenience again on Christmas Eve and gave us our entire order for free. We were so shook since this was a big order but also very thankful for this "Christmas present." For the food, everything we had was good. The okonomiyaki is a must and the pork is really good! The fried chicken was the family's overall favorite. The yakisoba had an interesting flavor but not a taste I would go for again. Was looking up some place to eat with a friend, and my eyes almost popped out when I saw Fugetsu moved to Sunnyvale! I love okonomiyaki but had only been to their old location in Santa Clara a couple times before the pandemic due to the wait. So I couldn't wait to try their new location and see how it is here. We came ~6:30 on a week night, and it wasn't bad at all. We were seated right away and there were still tables available. We both ordered the okonomiyaki special sampler with 4 different kinds because it just looked so enticing! Food came out at a reasonable amount of time, we knew ordering okonomiyaki would take some time and it was ok with us. All 4 from the sampler were good! I especially liked that they all have distinct flavoring so it's not just the same thing 4 times. Also you literally get a quarter piece from each and adds up to a full okonomiyaki, and they charge pretty similarly to one full one too so you're not paying a lot of extra for the sampler. Been to Fugetsu twice for dinner now and not sure if I came on an off day but the second time wasn't as good as the first. I got the pork modanyaki (okonomiyaki, but it comes with noodles as well) and it was pretty heavy/saucy. The flavor was okay, but the whole okonomiyaki was kind of soggy and not as crisp as we were expecting. We also tried 2 takoyakis (original and ebi mayo?) - they were also kind of soggy and felt a bit undercooked. Would not recommend getting the ebi mayo takoyaki, because it basically tasted like soy sauce and not much else. The service was okay, considering that the restaurant was super busy, but the food took a long time to come out. I came with a larger party and they only had a couple tables large enough to seat us, so I'd definitely recommend coming early if possible. This place is attached to a restaurant called Bamboo. They give you both menus so you can order from either place or mix and match which is cool. It's located in downtown Sunnyvale. There is a parking lot right behind the restaurant which is convenient but it can fill up pretty fast since the lot is kind of small. I came for dinner around 6pm and was seated right away. We got a pork yakisoba and a okonomiyaki and a tuna sushi roll. The okonomiyaki took around 15-25 minutes to be prepared which was pretty long but I didn't mind the wait. It was pretty good and filling. The serving size is smaller than I was expecting but it's heavy so it was filling for me. It was pretty tasty and creamy. The pork was tender and flavorful. The menu is pretty simple -- several okonomiyaki choices, yakisoba choices, some appetizers, also a few "bento box" options which combines an okonomiyaki or omelette with an appetizer and rice side. Storefront itself was pretty small and the parking lot seems pretty small if it were full under normal circumstances, but not an issue at the moment. Pick-up orders were placed at a table at the front and easy to grab while social distancing. Didn't interact much with the staff, but they did double check the name on my order before letting me take it. We ordered two okonomiyakis to share. Taste-wise, the deluxe okonomiyaki was more flavorful than the seafood one (maybe also because it came with a fried egg on top). For both, we ordered modan-style so it came with noodles in addition to the cabbage and proteins. It is a decent price for the amount you get, though I do think the flavor in the okonomiyaki could be a bit more even (not very flavorful in the batter, main flavor comes from the sauce on top). The texture was good and it is nice that you can get legit okonomiyaki in the area. Would love to come back later on to try the dine-in experience as well. read more

F O O D This review is just for the Fugetsu dishes even though we ordered from both Fugetsu and Rokko menus. Unlike other places, they offer modan-style okonomiyaki which is just okonomiyaki but topped with noods. Would highly suggest bringing people to share with, because the okonomiyakis are huge and super filling... or you can pack the glorious leftovers. For the uninitiated, okonomiyaki is a Japanese savory pancake dish consisting of wheat flour batter and other ingredients cooked on a teppan/metal griddle. Okonomi = whatever you want Yaki = grilled + Deluxe modanyaki: Everything okonomiyaki on top of crispy noodle layer. Includes pork, squid, shrimp and scallops topped with fried egg, served with house special sauce and mayo (see photo) + Cheetama Pork Okonomiyaki: Pork okonomiyaki with extra egg topping and melted cheese served with house special sauce and mayo. My Brazilian friend remarked that it reminded her of the pork from Brazil. Located off nice street for food in downtown Sunnyvale. Super fast service and zero wait on Sunday at 6pm. Ample parking in the street. Came here for dinner on a Tuesday night. We ordered fried chicken cartilage, okonomiyaki, takoyaki and seaweed salad. I really enjoyed all four dishes but got to say the cartilage is better to eat when it's warm. Okonomiyaki was in pretty big serving and we didn't get to finish all the food. It's great to go here on a Tuesday night because after dinner you could go check out the board game night at a bar nearby that's Tuesday only I believe! read more

Beautiful presentation of the modanyaki and wonderful flavors from the protein. BEWARE OF THE AMOUNT OF MAYO. The two dishes we ordered did NOT list mayo as an ingredient. While it's a common ingredient in this type of dish, we didn't think to call it out to the waiter because the other modanyakis in the menu DID have mayo listed. Not a fan of mayo personally, so this ruined the experience quite a bit for me. I hope to come back some time to try it without. read more
