My family and I were in the South Bay area and wanted to grab dinner. I had this spot bookmarked for the longest time and made the suggestion and sure enough, off we went to get okonomiyaki. The restaurant was of a medium size, with all the tables made with either a heating grill or tray. We got sat down after about 20 minutes of waiting because we had a large group. The waiters and workers were super accomadating and suggested that we order first so that as soon as we sat down, the food was ready to be served. I split 3 items with my friend, the Cheetama Pork modan, which was a pork and cheese okonomiyaki with egg topping and noodles. All the portions for the okonomiyaki were huge! We didn't think we were going to finish everything. The Cheetama modan was delicious! The cheese and egg flavors were really well balanced. The noodles added the necessary base to the overall dish and the pork was also seared and grilled really well. The cheese pull in this one was strong. We also got the ebi Mayo Cheese Seafood Tama and man, I can confidently say that anything with Japanese mayo is going to be delicious. The dish was slathered with the Mayo yet wasn't overpowering with the seafood. Instead, it complimented it extremely well and really brought out the Essence of all the filling that was infused within. The okonomiyaki was LOADED with seafood. Every bite you can taste the squid, prawn, and scallop and it just made me want to keep shoveling it in my mouth, despite the burns on my tongue because it's hot! We also ordered the garlic steak with ponzu sauce. This could've been a pass for us. It was still good, but the stars of the show were the okonomiyaki. At first, our steak was cooked well done, but we asked for it to be cooked medium rare instead and the waiters and cooks took it back in and made a freshly medium rare steak for us. The service was impeccable. The waiters were nice, efficient, and super helpful. I will for sure be coming back to try all the other items on the menu and 100% recommend this place for anyone that wants delicious okonomiyaki and great service. read more

Came here for a birthday celebration and made a 6:15 reservation, but called in to push it back to 8:30. The worker on the phone was very understanding and allowed us to push back the reservation, which was for a Wednesday night. We came in and they sat us at a table right by the front door, so it was a bit cold. They gave us lots of time to look at the menu, which was appreciated - there's so much to pick from! We ended up ordering the Cucumber Tataki (free with Yelp check-in), White Tuna Carpaccio, and 2 Okonomiyaki: Cheetama & Fugetsuyaki. I also got an Oolong Cocktail ($5 during happy hour), which was refreshing. You can barely taste the alcohol, very pleasant to drink! The workers didn't check on us too often, so we ran out of water frequently, but it was easy to flag them down. This seems to be a popular date spot, but also really nice for single dine-in because they have a bar area that is perfect for people eating alone. Not a lot of room for big parties.. They play soft EDM and lights are dim inside. You can also see the chefs from a small window in the corner, which is interesting. Overall very happy with the meal. FINALLY tried this place, and I'm so happy! My friends and I came here on a Friday evening at the start of Memorial Day weekend. It was about a half hour wait, with no waitlist, even after I checked on Yelp. It was really fun to watch the cooks create the dishes through a glass window, and everything here looked and tasted delicious. I started off with Uni Yaki Onigiri, a grilled rice ball with sea urchin. Very tasty! I like that they grilled it. For my main, I had the Stewed Beef and Egg Topped Okonomiyaki. So heavenly indulgent! I was very satisfied and stuffed, though of course, can't forget about dessert! Dessert was taiyaki with green tea ice cream and matcha tiramisu. The only real times I've had okonomiyaki in the States has been a smaller, knockoff version from an izakaya. Thus, I almost never crave okonomiyaki itself so I avoid disappointment when I can't even find the damn thing sold in restaurants. Fortunately, living close to the South Bay has now brought me to Fugetsu, and I have to say I am impressed with the quality, ambiance, and taste of our experience enjoying okonomiyaki in an unexpected place. Okonomiyaki is however you'd like it prepared and their menu offer a wide variety of typical options. If this is your first time, I recommend getting one and sharing it so that if you don't like it, you don't need to finish it. However, everything we had here was really good given the rarity of it all outside Japan. Each okonomiyaki goes for about $15 - $50 which is honestly quite steep if I'm being honest. You also don't mix the batter and cook it yourself here which I find interesting. Everything is prepared in the kitchen in advance and then brought to the hot skillet sitting on your table to continue cooking and maintain its heat. While the fun DIY part is missing at Fugetsu, the quality of the okonomiyaki is not to be overlooked. I loved my ika-buta (squid and pork) okonomiyaki so much. Great portions and the quality of the ingredients was up there. I only wish we had more Japanese mayo to sprinkle on top with the okonomiyaki sauce sitting at the table. A rookie mistake not to be made again. They offer bonito flakes upon request and we weren't charged for them either! I'm so used to seeing them dance on top of the food that I knew something was missing when that wasn't happening. Perhaps it's a topping they feel Americans wouldn't necessarily care for, but they're there if you want some. Service is awful! Staff is very rude. We were a party of 7 with 3 kids. We immediately wrote down our names for the waitlist and were first in line. As the restaurant was getting busier we noticed that everyone else was getting seated before us after waiting 20mins. The booths can definitely fit us but we didn't know they weren't allowed to put a high chair at the end of the table due to safety reasons. There were only 3 other tables that can fit our party. The whole time they didn't communicate this to us and left us hanging. At this point, my kids were getting really hungry and cranky so I asked the staff about it. They acted condescending about it. How should I know they weren't allowed to put a high chair at the end of the table? They were shaming me on how I will endanger my kid. If only they just communicated that the wait for a table will be very long in the first place then we would have left earlier but nothing. We ended up leaving and went to a different restaurant. I went to this place for a pre birthday celebration with my parents! It was pretty empty when we went in on a 6:30 pm on Tuesday but filled up so quickly after that that we had to have a reservation to get a seat! Food: I loved the pancake items they had - I got the house special and the seafood special! I definitely preferred the house special since it had a good balance of sweet and savory. FOOD Came here with a party of 5. We all ordered some form of modanyaki, which is the okonomiyaki with noodles (which I believe is yakisoba). Before this, I was under the impression that okonomiyaki already came with noodles but I suppose I was wrong! I got the beef modanyaki which came with the kind of stewed beef slices on a gyudon. It also came with SUPER yummy! It came with a fried egg, sauces, and pickled ginger which all perfectly complemented one another. I also shared the seafood modanyaki which included shrimp, cuttlefish, and other seafood I believe. This one was a bit saucier than the beef one. Both were amazing, but if I had to choose, I'd go with the beef. The modanyaki all took at least 25 minutes to come out, which they warned us about when we ordered. Definitely worth the wait though. The menu was pretty extensive with sushi and dons that looked amazing. They got options! MOOD So the name of the store is actually Rokko, I think, not Fugetsu. Tried fugetsu for the first time with a friend yesterday and we really enjoyed it. We went here on a Wednesday evening and we were quickly seated. We ordered a few dishes for two but the takoyaki was the highlight. It was so soft, delicious and perfectly cooked. The chicken karaage and the yakisoba were good, but I felt I've had better. My first time having okonomiyaki was in Japan last year and this restaurant originates from Osaka so it is quite authentic~ It's okay to pretty close to taste but missing something... minus star(s) because I felt the cabbage could have been cooked more and there was only 1 server for the whole restaurant for lunch :0 There's a grill plate (includes flipper tool!) on each table to keep the food warm and some parts get crispier (yummy :3). Granted, I've only had okonomiyaki once in Osaka, but I'd say the flavor Fugetsu provides is comparable to what I ate in Japan. My husband and I thought the food here was absolutely delicious and we can't wait to keep exploring the rest of their menu. If you want to be a little bit kinder to your wallet, go during lunch for their lunch specials or during happy hour, which is 8 PM-10 PM from Mon-Thurs. During happy hour, a few premium starters, yakisoba, and of course alcohol are discounted. Their premium starters become $5 and the yakisoba special becomes $10. I still wish the portions were slightly larger though. Recently, we tried their jaga mochi cheese okonomiyaki (potato, mochi, and cheese). I love the texture of grilled mochi, so I just had to try. From the ingredient description, you'd think the okonomiyaki would be heavy, but it actually wasn't! It was so delicious and the crunchy, chewy mochi was such a nice textural contrast. First off, what small portions?? You will not leave hungry! I'm a fairly big eater and I ordered the lunch special Mentai Noodle Okonomiyake that comes with salad $14.95. I added a mini beef udon for $3 but honestly would still have been plenty of food without it. Total $17.95 The mentai added just a touch of roe-y goodness but was flavorful and filling. You can add more sauce, crushed seaweed, or togarashi on top, but I liked it just as it was. The salad was light and crunchy with a sesame seed vinaigrette. The mini beef udon had a savory broth, and the beef was thin and tender, not at all chewy, while the udon noodles had just the right amount of chew. Busy location with cute decor and friendly service! My partner and I are vegetarian so we shared a potato and cheese okononiyaki modan style! It was so delicious but very heavy, so I highly recommend sharing with your friends and family. It wasn't lacking in flavor and the portion was very generous. Very yummy! With the yelp check in coupon thing we also ordered butter corn! Friendly friendly service. Really nice gals who helped me and my friends- even had an embarrassing moment when I overfilled my beer and one came right away with extra napkins ha. The wait time is a little long as other people have mentioned that the chef in the back cooks the food to bring out to you. I had the regular pork okonomiyaki and it was decent. Doesn't compare to the ones in Japan but I did wish we could've cook it ourselves. I guess the griddle doesn't get that hot to really get it cookin. There aren't many places in Santa Clara county that sell okonomiyaki. While I usually DoorDash my food due to covid, I have made the trip here plenty of times. Each experience with the food has lived up to my expectations, and the portions are so well I always have leftovers for the next day. My friends and I came here for dinner on Saturday night. There is street parking available and a lot next to the plaza but it fills up fast since it's right in the heart of downtown Sunnyvale. Fugetsu is part of another restaurant - Rokko. There's a separate menu for Fugetsu but you can also get the Rokko items as well. The restaurant was pretty full but were seated right away for a party of 3. Between us, we shared the the deluxe okoniyaki, Cheetama pork okonomiyaki and the ebi mayo cheese okonomiyaki. For the pork one, we decided to make it Modan and add noodles. They all tasted very good but very saucy! Would not recommend if you don't like sauce. The Food There are only a few okonomiyaki places around the bay area. Fugetsu is one of the better ones, and they focus on okonomiyaki and teppanyaki. We ordered their Gyu-Suki Ontama Okonomiyaki, Chanpon Yakisoba, and Tonpei Yaki. The Tonpei Yaki and Chanpon Yakisoba I had before, they were both pretty good. The Gyu-Suki Ontama Okonomiyaki is new on their seasonal menu. The dish needed some work on how it cooked and layered. It was not bad in flavor, but cabbage was burn on bottom (before it arrived it seems), and egg was cold on top. I am still interested in seeing what they have for their different seasonal menu though. The Miscellaneous The restaurant is quite popular as you can imagine, so expect long wait during peak hours. The inside have limited seating, but the interior has an interesting touch to it. Their service was good, and the staff were attentive to the customers even when it was busy. They have a good selection of dishes on their main menu, and they also have a seasonal menu that varies. The prices are slightly on the expensive side, but the quality is not bad. Enjoyed my okonomiyaki. Ive been to Japan (Osaka and Tokyo) so I have a small baseline for what this should taste like. Unfortunately, the last time ive eaten one of these was a year ago so I forget lol. Moving on, I did like my okonomiyaki. However, I do feel it could have been a lil crispier, and like everybody says, it is pre-cooked and when they place it on the griddle, it doesnt really grill it more rather than just keep it warm, whereas in Japan, it still comes pre-cooked but you can choose to grill it up more on your grill. Mostly comprised of cabbage topped with goodies and a crispy pancake hat. It's a unique and interesting dish if you've never had okonomiyaki before. Be sure to add the crushed seaweed topping for some beautiful color and pizzazz. The potato and mochi bits are chewy and offer a nice contrast against the cabbage and noodles, but I must say I wasn't overly impressed by the dish as a whole. In regards to GRUBHUB for pickup Amidst COVID-19, I began to actively use delivery apps to order take-out, but I was unaware of the exorbitant fees restaurants incurred for my convenience. This isn't exactly a review of Fugetsu's food. This is a plea as a regular of their restaurant to use Square or call in to order pick-up and do not press that convenient red "Order Takeout" button at the bottom of your mobile screen! By doing so, this helps Fugetsu avoid a TWENTY percent marketing fee paid towards Grubhub rather than the business for installing a red button on a Yelp page. It's one thing if I were actually scrolling through and discovered Fugetsu on a delivery app to order delivery, but in my case, Grubhub did no marketing whatsoever for Fugetsu. So, I ask you to please let our local businesses keep 20% of their profits (at a minimum) if you were simply trying to order take-out that you're going to pick-up in person like me. My money should be going to the businesses, not the ordering apps. If you want to be contact-less and wish to pay in advance, Fugetsu has a website on Square, which allows credit card payments that restaurants only pay a commission fee of 3% + $0.30 per transaction to Square. Anyways, I learned something new about transaction fees today, and I hope I shared something new with y'all to support local businesses during this pandemic. Upon seating, the waiter explained that the best way to enjoy this place was to order multiple dishes from the menu, so that everyone can share and cook on the tray. There was a bunch of okonomiyaki on the menu, so we got about two those along (Seafood and Uni) with some appetizers. What's unique is that when they bring the food to you, they put it on foils that you can cook on the heating tray in front of you (which keeps the food warm). This is my 3rd time at Fugetsu, though it could easily be my 100th if I lived a little closer. Fugetsu has moved away from their standalone Santa Clara location, and has merged in with Rokko Japanese Restaurant. Not sure how many customers Rokko gets, but the space is much larger than the original location, so hopefully that means less wait time. Regardless, you can still call ahead to make a reservation. We came at 7pm on a Friday and it didn't seem like we needed one. We ordered the Deluxe Modanyaki. This dish is incredible. Kind of like a large Japanese pancake with all kinds of meat and seafood, topped with a rich takoyaki-type sauce. It comes served on a hotplate, giving a nice crunch to a good portion of the dish. The sauce within the okonomiyaki is also rich and bold, a perfect pairing to the shrimp and pork. Pro tip is to get this dish with Modan (noodles). Years after my first trip here, I still dream about the noodles, while having less of a recollection of the regular okonomiyaki. The noodles are crunchy toward the outside, and give some welcomed structure to the core. I also ordered a green tea cocktail - Ryokucha Hai. This drink was ok. Initial taste is just like iced green tea, aftertaste is alcohol. You're probabaly better off ordering an iced green tea and a separate bottle of soju. In summary, Fugetsu is basically one of a kind in the bay. I'm not aware of any other places where you can get okonomiyaki of this caliber. My sister lived in Japan for a while, so I've only heard great things about okinomiyaki from her. I've never seen it as a menu item at any local Japanese restaurants, so it was nothing more than a myth to me as far as I was concerned. When I randomly came across Fugetsu on Yelp I was very excited to try a totally new cuisine, and I took my sister and boyfriend along for the ride. As much as I was impressed by the food at Fugetsu, my sister mentioned that she thought the okinomiyaki was as legit as it could get. Well, that's a good sign! Plus I've heard that Fugetsu was a Japanese chain, so I would hope that the food was authentic enough. We ordered the house okinomiyaki, called Fugetsuyaki, which consisted of shrimp, pork, beef, and squid. I can't say I've had anything like okinomiyaki before. I guess it's like an egg pancake, but it's almost like it doesn't get cooked through despite being on the hot plate. The texture was like batter, but the mixed in cabbage gave the okinomiyaki a nice crunch. The Japanese mayo and okinomiyaki sauce attributed to its umami/savory flavor and richness. We also shared other Japanese tapas that were all excellent. I think I liked the tapas more than I did the okinomiyaki. The Buta Negi is bomb! It's such a simple dish too: thinly cut seasoned pork belly slices on a sizzling plate with scallions and squeeze of lemon. If you've had Filipino sisig before, this is like the Japanese version of it. If you're just a fan of pork belly, I highly recommend trying this. I enjoyed the Uni Yaki Onigiri. Another simple dish that packed on so much great flavor. It's just a rice ball grilled with soy sauce and topped with sea urchin and scallions. I'm a huge fan of uni, and I thought it tasted fresh. The rice ball was also topped with a good amount of uni, so I felt like I wasn't being skimped on. The Kaki Butter Soy Sauce was my favorite among the three Japanese tapas we tried. This was better than any baked oyster in butter sauce that I've had from any Asian restaurant. The oysters used for this dish were huge. I felt that we didn't have any particular issues with service. My reservation was honored, and we were seated right away. The wait staff was pretty friendly and attentive. The only slowness we experienced was in flagging someone to give us our bill. read more

Came here twice during covid and it gives me a little taste of Japan. We got the family set and to be honest, it fed 2 of us! The chicken karage was bomb, okonomiyaki was good, omusoba was my favorite, and takoyaki was good but needed to be warmed up. Order through their website! Give it a shot! read more

The service here is TOP NOTCH. All the servers are super friendly and even give you some background about some of the dishes if you've never had them before. The food is amazing. I'm already a Japanese food fanatic, but this restaurant really blew me away. There are more options for dinner, so I'll be sure to come back for that another day. read more

To start, I LOVE UNI. Let's talk about going above and beyond customer service. Last Saturday, I booked reservations here for dinner(7pm). I also pre ordered Uni okonomiyaki and uni yakionigiri. At 6pm they called me regarding not having Uni, I told them that I'm already in the area and I came all the way from Oakland. The lady I spoke to talked to the chef, she said they'll do their best to get/borrow Uni from a different restaurant. I went anyways since I really wanted to try Fugetsu. Got there at 630ish and the lady told me that they got Uni for us (hoooooooray) after breaking the news, the rest is history. Here's what we got: Cheese corn: Complimentary from yelp Spicy Yakisoba: flavorful Uni Okonomiyaki: definition of perfection Uni Onigiri: enjoyed every single bite of Uni goodness Dessert: green tea Taiyaki: not too sweet, just the way I like it. Never have I been so satisfied with every aspect of a restaurant. Service : fast and attentive Drinks: had the fresh squeezed grapefruit soju. Perfect cause it wasn't too sweet and really refreshing Food: Checked in on yelp for the salted cabbage. Blew our minds away. I think it had some sesame oil, Bonito flakes, seaweed strip and not too salty Uni and poached egg was like 10 bucks but so worth it with the amount of uni and again, perfectly seasoned Buta negi: pork belly strip served on hot plate with green onions. My friend recommended this place for dinner and it was a great choice! You definitely should reserve a table before coming because it is a small restaurant and most table were already reserved when we walked in. This was my first time having okonomiyaki and I don't see many restaurants with it either. There is a grill in front of you but it comes out cooked already from the kitchen, so it does take some time. But, I've seen videos of it in Japan and they cook it in front of you there. We got the Fugetsuyaki and Seafood Tami. Both were very tasty, however, I slightly preferred the Seafood Tami because it wasn't as saucy. I had this place book marked ever since it first opened and this past weekend I finally had a chance to try. I called the restaurant to check the wait time and host was nice enough to put our names down so when we arrived, we were seated right away. After looking at the menu and pictures on Yelp, we decided to order the following items: Butter corn (Free app when checking in with Yelp): 3/5 Uni yaki onigiri: 5/5 - Our favorite of the night Fugetsuyaki + modan: 3/5 - Big portion but super salty Chanpon yakisoba: 4/5 Tendon in ponzu (limited quantities): 4/5 Everything was very tasty. My favorite was the uni yaki onigiri because I LOVE grilled rice balls and I LOVE anything uni so this dish was heavenly to me. I also really enjoyed the chanpon yakisoba and tendon in ponzu. The chanpon had a good amount of seafood and it was seasoned well. The tendons in ponzu was surprisingly delicious. I like that it was bathing in a pool of warm ponzu broth and tasted comforting. The butter corn was just butter corn. The fugetsuyaki was big, good but super salty. After eating a few bites of it, I got sick/tired of the taste. I think this place is totally worth checking out.
