I am a sushi fanatic and Fuji at Kendall and its other location in Quincy serve the best and most consistent sushi in Boston. It seems like a lot of the negative reviews are service related, which is odd since I have never received poor service here. This location has the same great quality food of their Quincy location but has a much better atmosphere. The dining area is very modern, clean, and comfortable. I can't say anything about their cooked dishes because I can't get myself to eat anything but their sushi. The sushi is always fresh. The rolls tend to be a little smaller than other sushi restaurants, which I actually find very appealing. It may not be as filling, but the smaller size is much easier to eat and combined with the spectacular taste, makes for a more enjoyable sushi-dining experience. The miso soup is the best around as well. Keep up the good work Fuji! read more

This place is so cute! I love the decor and the openness; those wall windows are great. You can either sit at the sushi bar or grab a table. We went for lunch and sat by the window. It wasn't busy at all, the service was great, and the food was tasty. We ordered a beef teriyaki bento and a spicy maki roll plate, which ended up being plenty of food for two people. The bento came with some shumai, tempura, rice, salad, sushi, and meat. The meat may have been a little overcooked. :( The rolls were really good! Some had salmon, some tuna, and then there were the regular spicy maki rolls. The crispy panko crumbs were a great addition to the rolls. On a Tuesday night, not particularly busy, we waited for about five minutes until anyone acknowledged our presence. All of the servers avoided eye contact. I got the deluxe bento box with unagi (eel) from the lunch menu (not an entree) which was $20. The food looked good, everything tasted fine, and I left feeling full. This place is a good place to go with friends to chat and catch up with drinks. The place is small though unfortunately. We ate somewhere else prior to coming here, so I only had desserts here. We had fried cheesecake, it was SO delicious, we devoured it. Also had Fried Ice cream - this wasn't that great the batter was too much. and lastly we had Fried Milk - this was good, compared to the fried ice cream. I know it's alot of Fried in one session, but shared amongst 4 girls. If you had to narrow it down and pick one I would definitely go with the Fried Cheesecake. We also had Sake and Sapporo - the house sake was strong but good. Because the place is so small, I don't know if that is a place i would go out of my way to go to. I had the most fabulous meal at Fuji last Thursday night. The service from the moment we entered the restaurant (valet parking) all the way through to the end of the meal was top notch. We opted to sit at the bar and did a tasting menu. The server inquired about our likes/dislikes and we were off and running! First course was an Asian inspired ceviche with crispy (rice-based?) chips. The combination of salmon, mango, shallot and cilantro was amazing and very unique. Second course- canapes Asian style. Instead of bread or a cracker, a thin piece of salmon was breaded and deep fried, topped with micro greens, cucumber, and a sweet soy-based sauce. I could have eaten 10 of these easily! They were that good. Third course- traditional sashimi that was exquisitely fresh. Fourth course- a flying fish was presented so we could see how fresh it was. Then the amazing sushi chef Ming deconstructed it into 5 dishes on one plate- including roe, sashimi, mariniated salad, and an unbelievable presentation of the bones/head/tail deep fried and standing vertically as the decoration for the tray. This really blew my socks off! At this point, I was so full we had to stop. I will definitely be back to Fuji, or one of the sister restaurants very soon. Came here for lunch today with friends and we each got the assorted lunch specials they offer. I had the salad trio with the spicy seafood soup and it was the perfect lunch . Each of the salads were delightful (avacado, seaweed, garden), I devoured them all, and it proved to be quite filling. The soup was just like I remembered from last time, perfect balance of spicy and warmth and it was chock full of fresh, delicious seafood, mushrooms, cabbage, and tofu. Had a great experience at Fuji. The space has a really nice ambiance with outside and insight seating as well as a small bar. Good location for a causal dinner with friends or even a date night. The sushi and the popcorn shrimp appetizer were delicious, fresh and overall great quality, which is always a concern with raw fish and seafood. We didn't have to wait for a table despite the fact that it was a busy Friday night and the food came out quickly. First time I went to Fuji At Kendall was so good when my friend and I were getting lunch again we didn't even consider any other restaurant. Second time I went to Fuji at Kendall was so good I made a Yelp account to write this review. Everything, and I mean everything, about this place is great. Rodrigo the host, with awesome and usually colorful hair, is super friendly and makes you feel like a regular the first time you step into Fuji. Christian, our server, has amazing tattoos and a personality to match. To get to the point, the service it top notch. However, Fuji does not cease to impress there. I haven't had time to try all their beautifully plated food (unfortunately), but the Golden Gate Sushi is full of complex flavors that meld together perfectly. Additionally, on our first visits the sushi chef's showed us a giant tuna they cut up to make their extremely fresh food. Lastly, the extremely high standard of quality kept by the food and workers is not dropped by the drinks. The sake is great, we were able to try a few and find the perfect one (the cold plum sake). The cocktails are also amazing and diverse, ranging from a bold Bourbon with citrus to a sweet and flavorful mix of fruit and rum. If you find yourself at a restaurant in Kendall that isn't Fuji you did something wrong. read more

After my first negative review, the manager was kind enough to reach out to me to apologize for my bad experience and invite me to come in again. Almost two years later, I finally did. This time, the service was excellent. My boo and I came in for a late dinner and despite cutting into closing time by the end, our server was attentive, thoughtful, and even offered to work with the kitchen to ensure that we could get our fried cheesecake dessert by having the chef prepare it beforehand and refrigerate it until we were ready. I love tuna tataki and I always order when I go to Japanese restaurants, but when I saw the dish arriving on the the table I was speechless. Sushi was standard. Hokkaiyaki was not hokkaiyaki. I have never seen hokkaiyaki and cucumber together. It was not bad but they should not name it hokkaiyaki because it won't make people's expectation. I also had Chinese dish and of course it was a bad decision to have Chinese food at a Japanese restaurant. Sesame chicken, the chicken was not only just dry but overly fried. I just recently found out about this spot. I usually come here after my evening jog since its right around the Charles River. I am a fake sushi fan as I only get "cooked" maki but it is definitely the best I've had around Boston. I would say its a little pricey but then again you are getting what you pay for. I consistently get their cooked salmon maki but I have tried the beef teriyaki and both are really good. If you like green tea, I would recommend the green tea fried ice cream. If you're a tea fanatic in general, go for the boba tea. The service is awesome and all the staff are extremely friendly! I have to add the fact that they have a TV projector on their bathroom mirror in case you were oh idk... getting a little bored washing your hands. read more

I was with a party of six so it understandably took a long time to get a table, so we had first went across the street for a few beers (at the suggestion of the host oddly enough) then returned to Fuji's bar for some sake. When we did get seated we asked if they had any sort of tasting menu, and our server offered a tasting menu for $50 a person that we took her up on. Not sure if that was an option on the printed menu but it sounded like a fair enough deal. The food ran the gamut from your typically sushi place fare (tuna rolls, tempura shrimp, etc.) to a few exemplary dishes that I could quite identify, plus that dish where they pour the soy sauce over the lobster heads so they move around a little bit which is always good for a smile. Some dishes were just okay for 2 were excellent so I was satisfied. This was my first time at Fuji and initially I got the vibe that it was trying hard to be something with its decor. However, the staff was really nice. Anthony, the manager, came over a few times and it was nice to talk with him and learn more about the restaurant. Our server Tiffany was really personable and had a good sense of humor (especially given the hole in her sweater...lol). I ordered the sushi plate and really enjoyed the scallop (super sweet) and the yellow fin tuna. The crab rangroons were fried perfectly with a generous amount of crab meat. I frequent this place as it is the only sushi/closest sushi to my work. The lunch bento vegetarian box is a wonderful deal. I love the hot/sour soup, it lingers for a while though, be warned! I have had some missed things in an order before, but it was quickly replaced and I know it happens, the place is always really busy! I would say it is pricey, but most sushi is, so if you do not go too nuts, it is affordable. Jasmine tea is really yummy with honey. The only downside would be the current waitstaff lately. When I asked for a missed salad, the waitress apologized and said she would bring me one asap.. which was great, then she added in 'no one ever likes to make new salads when we run out'...sort of awkward and not necessary for the customer to know. Also, when we arrived one afternoon two bus boys were checking out a girls ass as she walked down the street, presumably after grabbing pick up. They then noticed me and the group heading in, and one said to the other 'yo grab them the door' to which the one opened the door and stood in the way - leaving it to fall on me as I entered. One of the same bus boy's during the time we were there checked out the waitresses ass and then proceeded to whip her with a cleaning towel in the ass, in front of the whole lunch crowd. Really awkward. This is work time and lunch time at a nice restaurant, leave your childish flirtations for after hours. It was just weird. Otherwise, I prefer to pick up from here. Love their lunch delivery! I get their bento set with teriyaki salmon and everything in the bento is super satisfying- vegetable tempura, gyoza, shumai, California roll, salmon teriyaki. Mmm all good! My only complaint is that there's no tempura sauce but I can make it myself so no biggy :P I also got ikura and it is probably the best ikura I've had in Boston/Cambridge! I was drawn in to Fuji when I passed by one day and saw someone eating their meal out of a hollowed out pineapple. The decor is very clean and modern inside, but I recommend eating outside if possible. We ordered a rainbow roll as an appetizer. Most rolls have six pieces of fresh tasty sushi. I finally tried the pineapple fried rice (served in a pineapple) and was slightly disappointed. Despite a mixture of shrimp, chicken, peas, snap peas, and pineapple, the dish lacked flavor. The curry didn't add much to the dish unfortunately. I would go back to try their lunch bento boxes though. read more

I love that Kendall Square has such diverse restaurant scene these days. Finally there are good restaurants to choose from to have dinner before heading over to see an indie movie at Kendall Square Cinema. Fuji at Kendall is a modern, chic, new Japanese addition to Kendall Square. Went there on a Thursday night with my girlfriends. The menu is very large and it's not easy to choose what you want to eat, especially if you're hungry. Anyway, after our drinks arrived (my cucumber martini was not that great) we ordered Salt & Pepper Calamari and Spicy Crunchy Avocado Salad to share and both appetizers were very tasty. My entree consisted of Spicy Tuna Maki (was pretty good), Tako and Maguro sashimi (they were out of Toro that night). The fish and octopus were fresh and the presentation was nice. Our waitress was a bit odd, not sure if she was new or had a bad day, but after I managed to flag her down (she was cleaning tables) I ordered a fried red bean ice cream with mango and banana topping. I expected tempura ice cream, but I got two scoops of not fried ice cream on a plate with some chopped banana and mango on the side. Anyway, the red bean ice cream was very delicious, fried or not. I've been meaning to try one of the Fuji restaurants for a while now. I really like their sister restaurant Shabu and Mein for the ramen and semi-cooked eggs. Today, I came here with a friend. When we inquired about what to get, one of the waitresses suggested we go with the lunch specials. My friend got the gourmet sushi lunch box, and I went with the Chinese one with sesame chicken. Her sushi looked okay, but my lunch box was somewhat disappointing. The sesame chicken appeared to either 1) been leftovers from the day before and reheated 2) overly deep fried or 3) poorly prepared. I've eaten freshly prepared sesame chicken in restaurants in Boston and New York City, and it never looks like what was put in front of me. When I was growing up, my parents ran a Chinese take-out business, so I'm well aware of what is done sometimes in kitchens to save food. The chicken tasted overcooked, but I still ate it b/c the sauce was tasty. Also, my friend and I were engaged in much discussion, and so we really didn't get down to eating until the dish had been in front of me for almost 10 minutes. If it's been sitting in front of me for a while, and I haven't tried it yet, I feel like it's on me. However, toward the end of my meal, the manager came over and inquired if I had any feedback, and since she asked, I mentioned that maybe the chicken was too deep fried. The next thing I know, I get the bill, and she has taken $10.00 off my meal. I was actually quite surprised, not expecting anything since I had pretty much finished most of the chicken. I think this is one of those places where the service is better than the food. We also ordered the scallop special and dessert. When I think about my experience here, I'm just reminded of the pleasant waitress and the manager. Honestly, the interactions with the staff here saved this review. I would have given it one less star otherwise. If I had to chose, I prefer Shabu and Mein's food. read more

I used to work in Kendall Sq and ate here all the time, and I just had dinner here again after about 5 years. It's still great. The best thing on the menu is the Spicy Crunchy Avocado Salad, which I wish came in an entree size. I was so excited to see it was still on the menu. This past trip I finally tried the fried coconut ice cream, which was great, but the chocolate sauce with it was a bit disappointing (I think it was just Hershey's syrup). They have super smoothies, especially the Mango, and the Two-Way cocktail is delicious. The service is a little slow, but but very friendly. read more

I like Fuji a lot, and wish it had been open, back when I lived in East Cambridge... It's upscale, they have solid sushi and lots of hot and cold cooked items. There is also a fun upbeat atmosphere here. My only issue with Fuji, is that service tends to be a bit uneven. I've had great servers, but more often than not, they are a bit unorganized and hectic. Just moved in across the street and have ordered takeout 5-6 times. Can't say anything about the ambience because I haven't eaten inside but the folks who greet me when I pick up have always been very courteous. On to the food - I've had rolls, nigiri, sashimi, and wok udon and soup udon. In general, the sushi is decent - not the best I've had but pretty good. The udons have always been spot on.
