The food is amazing here, very authentic and full of flavors! yum nam kao tod is very spicy, crispy, and fresh. Burst of salty, sour, spicy flavors (fried chili). Gang run juan is my personal favorite. the beef steak is tender and the watercress is a good green that balances the green curry flavor. It is relatively mild and goes well with blue snow pea flower jasmine rice (separate side order). Our baby toddler loves it! The servings are generous that we didn't even have room to touch our Khao Mun Gai! Their original location in Berkeley is great too, but much smaller. I heard great things about Funky Elephant and been meaning to come visit. People on social have been raving about how their food does show up as "Thai spicy" and how authentic the food taste. Unfortunately, that was not the case with us. My partner and I ordered the papaya salad, the pad Thai, and the mussels. None of which were super spicy to me. They even asked us how spicy and we opted for spicy. The food was good, very tasty and authentic. I think for me, the dishes were missing a little oomf. The portions were all the smaller side for what we're paying for. I hear the restaurant can get busy, so come early if you're coming during busy high traffic hours like Fridays and Saturdays during dinner. A solid 3.5 out of 5. Would I recommend it, yes, I'd it top of mind when I'm craving thai food, probably not. read more

Lively vibes but I felt like my blood pressure increased by 20 points after our meal because our food was sooo salty. We ordered the crispy rice salad, grilled oyster mushrooms, and pad Thai. The underlying flavors for all the dishes were actually really good but unfortunately everything was extremely oversalted. Even the peanut sauce for the grilled oysters, which leaned sweet, was somehow too salty. The crispy rice salad was so overwhelmingly salty that I tried to mix some of the raw bean sprouts from the pad Thai in to balance out to salt. I also feel like you don't get much for the price you pay. The grilled mushrooms were moderately priced ($13) and came with 4 (smallish) strips of mushroom. The crispy rice salad ($18) was served with 4 pieces of lettuce, and they wanted to charge $2 for 4 more pieces. The pad Thai ($21) was pretty skimpy with protein--2 shrimps and a few pieces of tofu. Really great Thai food in the mission. A bit surprised to see so many negative reviews about the restaurant smelling like fish sauce or the food tasting heavily of fish sauce! It's a Thai restaurant, what'd you expect?! A bit like going to a steakhouse and complaining it smells like steak! Anyway, the crispy rice salad, papaya salad, and hodo tofu appetizers are standouts. We came to this restaurant as a big group for my friend's birthday. We were unsure at first if they would be able to seat all of us, I believe we were a group of ten all together. After a short wait the staff made it happen fortunately. I personally didn't eat during our visit, I just drank. All the food that was ordered by everyone else looked delicious. The staff was friendly and was able to tend to tend to our big group all the while serving the rest of the restaurant well. Bonus points to the layout and vibe of this restaurant. SOOOO funky! I'm surprised that this place has a low rating overall -- I thought that the food and the service were both amazing. I've been to the original location in Berkeley and noted that the SF one is more upscale and has a larger menu. Very different vibe from Barzotto, whose space they took over :) For food, we got the signature pad Thai (5/5) and crispy egg salad (4/5). The pad Thai was the best I've ever had -- so flavorful, spicy, and a myriad of textures. The egg salad was also really delicious, but there was an overpowering flavor of dill, which we were undecided on. I will say, this place is not for the faint of heart. Wanted to try a different Thai food restaurant in SF, however, the food did not meet my expectations. Ordered one of the special salads, which was definitely "funky" being served with blue dyed boiled eggs, cured salmon, big pieces of lettuce, & dill. Wouldn't consider it as a Thai dish as highlighted on their menu. The Jungle curry tasted good, wished it was a thicker broth. Pad Thai was decent but very chewy. Also wanted more tofu,only had 4 tiny pieces of tofu in the whole noodle dish. The vibes inside were cool with neon lights, bright interior, and a shiny disco ball on the ceiling. Four of us ordered food to go from here. I especially like that they had wild fish and Mary's chicken as options so I knew the quality of the meat would be good. We ordered the Crispy Rice Salad, Roti with Yellow Curry, Party Wings, Pad Thai Old Skool, and the Motherland Curry with wild rock cod. We ordered the Pad Thai and curry Firey so we did expect to to be Thai Spicy, but it was not spicy enough. While it did have a nice heat and good flavor it wasn't Thai spicy or Firey. All the dishes tasted really good. The Pad Thai had head on shrimp that was very well cooked and delicious. The Curry's rock fish was moist and the chicken wings were sticky and had a good spice to them. Overall the food was very good. I would order from here again but I would choose to do dine in and I would not do take out again. This is because the portions were very small, especially the Crispy Rice. Definitely not a shareable dish. But sometimes when ordering to go, portions are smaller but for the price you would expect and want more. The beef was tender and had excellent flavor. Definitely my favorite of those two courses. The soju cocktails are refreshing and pair well with the meal. I'm sad to leave only a 2-star review for this place because there were some very good things, but overall the experience was disappointing. First with the good: The wait staff was very nice and attentive. The "party wings" are great -- deliciously sweet and spicy. The tap water is good (probably filtered). I hate going to restaurants where the water tastes horrible which compels me to order a beverage I probably don't want. I prefer drinking just water with most types of cuisine. The not so good: Yellow curry chicken. The curry itself tastes good, but the chicken was obviously cooked separately and probably only added to the curry right before it was served. Because of this, the chicken wasn't as moist as it could have been and it also didn't absorb the flavor of the curry. Also disappointing was the amount of potatoes and carrots -- two thin carrots and maybe a half dozen very small (and I mean so small that you could almost miss them) pieces of potato. I have ordered this dish in countless Thai restaurants and everywhere else there have been large chunks of potatoes that are near disintegration due to being cooked in the sauce. Given potatoes are inexpensive I don't know why this restaurant skimped so much on this ingredient (more on portion sizes later). Gang Rawan beef. The beef was very good, but like the chicken dish seemed separate from the rest of the dish. It was also room temperature even right after the dish was served. The sauce itself was good. Oyster mushroom. The sauce was good, but like the beef and chicken the mushrooms didn't seem to have met the sauce until the kitchen plated the dish. The mushrooms just seemed rubbery and bland (reminiscent of calamari). The bad: Each of the four dishes were smaller than they would have been at any other Thai restaurant I've gone to. Given that the prices at Funky Elephant are equal to or higher than other Thai restaurants in San Francisco, it just left me with the feeling that this place isn't worth going to. Typically we leave a restaurant with leftovers if we order two appetizers and two entrees, but we left this place having eaten everything and still feeling a little hungry. In addition to the four dishes above, we ordered two orders of rice (each a small rice bowl) and one Thai beer. After tax and tip, the total was just over $112. read more

The only word to adequately describe the vibe at Funky Elephant is in the restaurant's name: funky. This colorful, flashy spot is an offshoot of their original Berkeley location and serves the same authentic Thai flavors on its menu. My favorite dish was the Crispy Rice Salad (Nam Kao Tod), made of broken crispy jasmine rice balls mixed with a flavorful melange of curry paste, peanuts, chili, fish sauce, and fermented pork, served with lettuce leaves, herbs, and lime on the side. It was a funky mixture of crispy, savory, sour, spicy, and umami, and every bite was an explosion of flavors. Next, the Fried Egg Salad (Yum Khai Dao) was made of crispy fried eggs topped with BBQ shrimp, herbs, shallots, cherry tomatoes, garlic, Thai chili, fish sauce, and lime; and the Drunken Mussels was a pot of PEI mussels in a spicy broth made of chili jam, Thai basil, Thai chili, garlic, and Asian rice wine. For our mains, the Pad Thai Old Skool was a super smokey stir-fry of chewy rice noodles with shrimp, tofu, egg, tamarind, and fish sauce, along with crushed peanuts, bean sprouts, and lime for garnish. The Motherland Curry was made with vermicelli rice noodles in a red coconut milk curry topped with tender wild rock cod and shaved cabbage. Finally, the Gang Rawang Beef was a chewy but juicy, rare sliced ribeye steak served with a green coconut milk curry sauce and topped with a salad of watercress and Thai basil. Funky Elephant is one of my new favorite Thai restaurants in SF! I've heard of them in Berkeley, but I never made it across the bridge to try it out. We ordered a bunch of items to share: - Fried brussel sprouts: these fried brussel sprouts are BOMB! I love the sauce they're in. Overall a great veggie side. - Party wings: these wings were probably the second most spicy thing we ordered, but they were so tender and delicious that we finished the whole order! I like that it comes with the drummette and the wing. It feels like i'm getting a good deal, lol. - Green papaya salad: This was THE spiciest thing we ordered, but the flavors were on point. Our waiter later told us that this salad was made with 3 thai chiles, and I definitely noticed them once he said that! So good though and the cold salad counteracts the spice. - Hella drunken mussels: The sauce from these mussels was to die for! We ordered extra sticky rice and I covered my rice with the mussels sauce. So good and again, spicy! - Pad thai old skool: This is the only non spicy dish we ordered; we loved it! They make their pad thai with real tamarind (no shortcuts here) and use Chan noodles for the ultimate chew. I loved the two huge prawns on top too; they were cooked perfectly. The flavor of the tamarind is unmatched! - Gang rawang beef: The beef was perfectly tender and I loved the green curry sauce that came with it! The watercress was a nice peppery touch to the dish. Overall Funky Elephant is a welcome addition to the mission! The restaurant got super busy and i'm glad to see they're doing so well at this new location. We chose to walk in and added our names to a list that the host was holding, but we had little communication after that and waited about an hour for our seat. Once we got seated we also had to wait a decent amount of time for each of our dishes to come out, and the portions were on the smaller side. It also comes with Hodo tofu, which is an amazing, local tofu company in the Bay. And I love the peanuts in this dish. -the Brussel Sprouts: the sauce on these brussel sprouts are to die for! Not worth the price. Everything was strongly seasoned, can't even eat the pad thai. We ordered a $27 beef dish, when it arrived , it was just 7 pcs of bite size of tasteless meat. The folding metal chairs were super uncomfortable, if you have sciatica or back pain, this is not a place for you. The vibe is so cute! Had dinner reservations at 8pm, they have dimmed lighting and nice background music. The waitress was super friendly and asked if it was our first time here as she stated the dishes were more on the spicy side. So excited they now have a location in San Francisco! The food here is so delicious and made with quality ingredients. Plus the owners are so sweet/kind & passionate about the food they put out as a Thai-American it truly makes me happy to see legit Thai food being represented. Sure, a lot of items on their menu might seem typical of a Thai restaurant but a lot of other Thai spots use pre-mixed sauces and use food items to try to cut corners and deliver cheaper Thai food. There's nothing wrong with that if that's what you are looking for but that is also why you will find a lot of places that taste the same and/or just average. Funky Elephant's food is so good and you can taste/tell the difference in their food. While some might see their dish prices as being more pricey than the average Thai spot, when you look at the quality & amount of work they put into each dish, it's totally worth it. While you'll find some familiar Thai dishes like Pad Thai, you'll also find atypical menu items as well. With that being said, Funky Elephants dishes are full of amazing flavors and their food so legit I would drive from San Jose to Berkeley just to eat there. My favorite appetizers: Brussel Sprouts - the brussel sprouts are cooked with a Thai curry paste that has lemongrass, galangal, garlic, chili, kaffir lime and shrimp paste. It makes for a super flavorful and fragrant sauce that goes so well with the crispy crunchy dense Brussel Sprouts. Fried Tofu- seemingly pretty simple dish but I grew up eating this as a kid. I love the tofu they use. It's so airy and crispy. Great with the sweet chili sauce satisfies my fried food cravings without feeling greasy or heavy. Fried egg salad - another dish that you will rarely find it typical Thai restaurants but I grew up eating a version of this at home. Can't go wrong with a fried egg & fish sauce, chili, lime... Southern Style Chicken soup - I think every culture has some type of comforting chicken soup. The chicken soup here is so flavorful and the chicken is plump & juicy. I recommend getting it with a side of rice as well. All their main dishes are amazing but I am obsessed with their Pad Thai. Pad Thai - Their high heat woks and use of real tamarind and humongous gulf prawns make this dish one of my favorites to eat here. If you think you pass on this dish the first time because you have had Pad Thai before at other spots and want to try other items do yourself a favor and come back just to have their's. It's my favorite pad thai in all of California I live in both N.Cal & S.Cal half half time and despite a huge Thai-American population in LA I still can't find anywhere that does Pad Thai like theirs. I seriously sometimes dream about the sweet, tangy and sour flavors of their pad thai. Plus their noodles are always perfect because of the high heat woks they have this chewy bite to them. I've only had pad thai like this back in Thailand. Don't forget to suck the head of the prawns too! So frigging delicious! The restaurant had funky vibes which was pretty fun but the food was not great. None of the things we ordered seemed like authentic Thai food. Both curries (the homeland curry and the beef curry) we got were bad. They were extremely watery and tasted overwhelmingly like dill. The pad Thai tasted more like a pad see ewe, which wasn't bad but definitely wasn't what it claimed to be. Service was excellent but didn't outweigh the food. I went to Funky Elephant tonight for dinner due to the excellent Yelp reviews, it's been a while since I've had a meal this bad. The best part about the meal was the service, which was fine. Ordered the Chicken soup, Rock cod curry and a stir fried beef dish that was a special. The Chicken soup and the beef dish came out first, the soup was mostly chicken with very little soup, it was so salty it was inedible (and I LIKE salty foods). The beef tasted like beef jerky reconstituted with fish sauce, sorta tough and also way too salty. I complained to the waitress and she apologized, and brought a cup of hot water to dilute the soup, but even with an entire cup of hot water, it remained too salty. She was kind enough to take the beef back and had the kitchen re-make it, little less salty the second time but still way too salty. The fish curry was fine but nothing special, there was also VERY little fish and the curry was thin and underwhelming. Total bill was $75 and we left hungry. I am absolutely bewildered how so many Yelpers loved their food, I thought maybe someone messed up in the kitchen the 1st time around, but since they re-made the beef dish for us, pretty sure that's not the case. read more

The new one is in my neighborhood, and I am so grateful for the existence of this funky authentic Thai spot, within walking distance! So nice, I ate there twice in a week. The ambiance is amazing!! The decor was adorable and the bathroom was stellar (you'll just have to see for yourself)!! The food was delicious, we had about 5 dishes that we shared. We went here for the first time tonight with friends, and we had a great time and came away full, so I have a positive feeling about the night. But when I think about the food, none of it was particularly amazing... like the kind of thing I'd be hankering for if I was just going out for me. The brussels sprouts were the most interesting as they came out flaky rather than dense, with a sauce with some kick. The wings were good... definitely different from other Asian wings in town (which I think is the SF trademark), on the spicy side. The beef, tofu, and fish dishes were just OK. They had their own style, and definitely distinguishable from other places. I just don't come away feeling like I'd have to have any of those next time. $230 all in for four people, including a bottle of wine. read more

Tried this spot a week ago. It was pretty cute and the food was tasty. We had the crispy hodo tofu, kao mun gai, gang rawang beef, and blister marker greens. Out of the 4, we liked the beef and KMG the best. Portion size was kind of small so we finished all the food we ordered between the two of us. PS The server told us this is Thai medium spicy but to me it wasn't spicy enough, but the servers were super nice and they gave us more chili powder to make it more spicy. read more

What a vibe! I immediately felt the "funkiness" of this place when I walked in and was greeted by the disco ball. Met a friend here for dinner and we got the brussel sprouts, Pad Thai, and Red Curry and it was all AMAZING! I was a little worried about how spicy it would be based on the reviews here but it was the perfect amount of "numbing" and background heat. I could still taste the brussel sprouts which I really enjoyed. The Pad Thai was sweet and the noodles were perfectly chewy. Like some other reviews said, this place really knows how to cook their protein! The shrimp was perfectly cooked as well as the cod in the red curry. The red curry was to die for and I kept trying to dip everything in it! This place is a must go if you're in the area! read more

This place is hands down always delicious. It is fast becoming one of the staples in rotation. The hella drunken mussels with a side of sticky rice is a must, as is the fried egg salad. Other winners include the wholesome noodles, and the wings! But honestly it's all good. The service is attentive without being overbearing. I usually find myself here on a Tuesday or Friday night and have never had to wait for a table, which is both fantastic, and also worrisome, as this place is too good to go out of business. read more
