I use to go to Lee's Sandwich for ice coffee all the time until my friend recommended this place. The coffee is definitely better but why I really go back is the little round sesame balls. This review is for their coffee and Banh Mi Thit Nuong. Their coffee is very good. I read lots of reviews and complaints that they have been going down hill. It is not that they have been going down hill. It is that many new places have popped out and have been going up hill. I use to only drink coffee here. I am a lover of vietnamese coffee, and I've probably tasted every cup of vietnamese coffee in Little Saigon, and Gala Bakery has THE best iced coffee you can find. And at $2.25 a cup, it doesn't hurt your wallet, either. Starbucks ain't got nothin' on Gala bakery. I usually get their iced coffee with milk or "cafe sua da" with one of the big hot pate chauds. There is no better breakfast. If I were to rate this place on the coffee alone, I would give it a 5/5, but I rated it a "4" because I'm not ecstatic about the pastries. I came here today and got a milk tea with boba. It was pretty dam good. The boba was soft and chewy, but the tea flavor was amazing. I would have liked the tea a little stronger. Based on my drink, I was going to give this place 4 stars. However, I tried some of my friend's tea and it was very good. The food portions were big and it was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. In terms of atmosphere, it was okay. There were a few tables and a couple of couches. There's free wifi, but you have to ask for the password. Service was also pretty good. read more

5 stars because I love their coffee!!! Been going here with my mom since I was young. For those who don't know, they actually do fruit cake sheets as well! So good! I remember when I used to go here 2-3 times a week just to get me some cafe sua da in the morning to get me through the day. Did the job. Last time I came here and ordered a cafe sua da, it tasted horrible. I think I have the sixth sense to when things are about to expire. It's happened quite a few times. Hahah. My last cafe sua da here tasted like it was on the verge of expiring. I'm guessing it was the dairy. Yuck. My friend said it tasted normal, but I had to disagree. This happened only once, I hope it never happens again. They do have good pate chaud. There are two types: chicken and pork. Pick your poison, or better yet, pick both! 3.5 stars. read more

My rating is for the coffee! Gala has the best coffee, IMO! $2.50 a cup! The iced coffee at Lee's sandwiches is too thick and a little too sweet. The one at Banh Mi Cali is alright. It's the right amount of sweetness but not enough milk. I like the bitterness in coffee but the one at BMC is a little too bitter ( i get a headache drinking it)..but GALA is perfect!!! You know coffee is good when it doesn't leave a sour taste after a sip. That sour taste is burnt coffee beans!! NO BUENO! Their pate chaud is a little sweeter than some places but i like it that way. Their Banh Mi is not bad. They put in a green spread in some of their Banh Mis that is different than other Vietnamese Banh Mi joints but their sandwiches aren't the same anymore. I LOVE the iced coffee here. It almost tastes like they put vanilla in there. $2.75 for small and $3.75 for large. Their chicken puff pastries are the best I've had. 85 cents each. They taste like mini chicken pot pies almost. The woman that works most of the time is very sweet and always greets you with a big smile. 4 stars because they put too much ice in the coffee. I was introduced to Gala about ten years ago by a close friend who used to make the drive 5 days a week from South Coast Metro area to get his Ca Phe Sua Da fix! Thank goodness they sell it by the half gallon ($22 last time I checked). We always used to laugh and wonder what do they really put in that coffee that makes it SO DARN GOOD and crazy addictive?!?! It's strong, just the way I like it. I used to drive back and forth from OC to San Diego a lot so if I wasn't stopping by Banh Mi Che Cali for sandwiches and coffee, I'll come here to make my coffee stop. It has a unique flavor, too. I am a coffee junkie! So much to the point that I drink it like water. Everytime I come here I buy 2 cups of Cafe Sua Da. The first I pound like you would the boot in Beerfest. The 2nd cup I attempt to savor but miserably fail and finish in like 10 minutes. It's simply irresistable! I've been coming here for years for their Cafe Sua Da. I recognize it in the streets when someone's holding a cup with no label. I can smell it and recognize immediately that it's Gala coffee. Their chicken pate chaude is nom nom nom-tastic. He barely acknowledged us and kept talking to these two people to the side. They didn't buy anything. He rudely asked what we wanted and continue his conversation with the other people. They make their bánh su (cream puffs) and then freeze them. So if you don't know to ask, you might get a whole box of frozen cream puffs. Then they tell you, "Oh, just leave it out ten or fifteen minutes." Well, an hour later, still just as frozen as can be. Maybe eventually they'll thaw, but of course then the pastry will be soggy. And so expensive! Also, the much-vaunted coffee is pre-made and just sits there. If you get there first thing when they're making it fresh it's actually really good but as it sits the tiny coffee particles precipitate out and it's not very good. Given how many other bakeries there are doing the exact same thing in Little Saigon, this is not worth your stop. read more

Very good Vietnamese sandwiches, chicken pate chaud, coffee (different cream taste than other places), egg rolls, and desserts. The chicken pate chaud has peas in it which gives it a nice sweetness. The puff pastry they use is nice and flaky too. They have a green chutney-kind of condiment that they put in their Vietnamese sandwiches which is different and good. I'm not sure if they make the following in-house, but they sell them on the counter (and they're good) - spring rolls, steamed buns, and banh khuc (savory sticky rice mochi ball filled with mung bean and pork). Nice little family-owned bakery in a nightmare shopping center with really crazy parking. I had the Chocolate cake and it was fresh and reasonable priced for $2 a slice; it was not heavy and filling but light and fluffy including the cream on top and sandwiched inside, good for a light snack. The tiny cream puff was decent and not overly sweet (Though I smelled sandwich or something on it, must of soaked up the sent around it).
