The Garden House continues to have the most wonderful Middle Eastern Food and pizza. In the past, I reviewed about the service and I do not know if that has improved or not, but we found the best scenario! Take out!!!! The chef and her assistant prepare everything fresh and with extreme care. Since they only take cash, I was short a couple of dollars and they told me, no worries, next time. I love this mentality....reminds me of life in CA. The restaurant itself, located in an old house, has been nicely restored and fits in well with the quaint and funky business area of 'Rosendale. It is a shame some neighbor(s) have complained about their pizza oven and their ventilation. Doesn't Rosendale have an inspector who can help the owner w complying w the actual codes? To me, it seems those neighbors, who are not happy with the town having such a great community minded restaurant , perhaps should move. That makes the most sense. When you live in the business area of a town w shops, cafes, restaurants, bars, galleries and a movie theatre, you either are tolerant of your business neighbors or you need to relocate. read more

This place has become one of our favorite restaurants in the area. Their rustic pizzas are amazing! Serviced on brown paper bags and baked in a brick oven on their front lawn, they are packed with flavor and creative ingredients. Recently had the curry chick pea dish as well - delicious! Well worth a visit, and especially nice if you can sit outside in the warmer months. I don't usually bother to say this, but their restroom is especially nice as well - just don't turn on the shower in the middle of the room, I believe it actually works. read more

Probably the best pizza I've ever eaten. It came straight out of the oven and onto the table with super fresh ingredients and lots of love. When for the Wednesday night buffet. A big spread of mediterranean dishes that were all quite good. Great, smokey baba ganoush, roast chicken, cod, ribs and corn on the cobb. The longer we hung around in the outdoor garden, the more new items came out from the kitchen. A very mixed experience. An impromtu dinner with Sue and her daughter, Laura. Sue ordered the fig, date and goat cheese pizza, Laura opted for the chickpeas curry and I made what turned out to be a bad decision - the chicken schwarma sandwich with french fries. The pizza was first to arrive, after only about 10-15 minutes at which time the other 2 dishes were "on their way". About 20 minutes later the chick peas curry arrived along with profuse apologies and more water and more pickled beets. Clearly all was not well in the kitchen because it was another 20-25 minutes before my schwarma arrived. I could possibly have forgiven the interminable delay had the schwarma been even a little complicated...or appetising...but sadly that was not the case and it was accompanied by the saddest, soggiest, greasiest french fries I have ever had. I realise that schwarmas are not all alike but I was more than a little disappointed by the small pita-bread wrap in tin-foil and it was certainly not stuffed with chicken and salad the way I had expected. Given the long delay in producing it and it's modest dimensions, had it been my restaurant I would not have charged for it but that was not to be. That said, Laura did enjoy her chick peas curry and Sue was delighted with her date and goat cheese pizza and I would consider returning to try one of the pizzas. However, I would not think about ordering one of the more expensive entrees. read more

Our community is so fortunate to finally have an amazing restaurant choice for dinner! I would give a 10 star rating if it was an option. I have been here at least 5 times and it is always delicious! The chef knows her stuff! The seasoning on all the entrees is superb! I love the kabobs, chicken or lamb. The portions are so generous. You leave completely satisfied. I finally sampled some desserts the other night, and wow! The brick oven pizzas are also, amazing. Fresh, interesting toppings. Perfect wine pairings and beer are also available. We walked by this place and were looking at the menu posted at the entrance. The owner approached and said, "If you don't like it, the bill is on me." So we walked into this converted house and backyard to enjoy some delicious wood-fired pizza and Mediterranean snacks. On the table were some pickled beets and we were given a sample of an Israeli wine when we asked about its dryness. First came a sampler platter with smoky baba ghanoush, hummus, and moussaka - all excellent with the supplied pita bread. Then the pizzas arrived. Crispy, seared-edged, oval-shaped beauties. The best pizza I've had in some time. There are many exotic topping combinations to choose from and any of the pizzas may be ordered cheeseless. With many vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, we'll be coming back. The prices were a little high, but worth it. read more

Everyone in the group of four I went with went away with wonderful flavors in our mouths, food in our bellies, and were charmed by the experience. It did take a while for our food to be prepared after ordering, but from what I could tell it was only Nahira (or Nahida?) in the kitchen doing all the preparation, so, considering that made for an even more impressive memory. The chickpea Tagine I ordered sent me to heaven, as did the sachlab (warming and delectable beverage) that my friend and I each ordered. My friends and I nibbled at one another's dishes, and I was truly impressed with the eggplant parmesan that my boyfriend ordered! I was in hog heaven and there was no stopping me from deciding to try a Turkish-style coffee, and I was VERY glad I did! To top it all off, Nahira was generous enough to bring to our table a home-made dessert, that was very sweet, nutty, rich, exotic, and delicious. Garden House has a quirky outside dining area filled with a random mix of mismatched tables and chairs. The crowd is a mix of local hipsters and weekenders, probably from NYC. We had dinner on Labor Day weekend and the place was packed -- only two servers and a full house of diners. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgable about the menu, but the service was incredibly slow. The highlight of our meal was the lentil soup, which had a nice kick, but was otherwise lacking in flavor. The accompanying white pita bread was hard and cold (not worth eating). My entree - a caramelized onion and red pepper salad topped with pine-nuts and spicy chicken - was the most greasy salad I've encountered. It was bathing in oil, and that's without dressing, which was on the side. My husband's Turkish-style lamb kefka kabob arrived at room temp., with a heaping portion of bland rice, and oily vegetables. The highlight was his fresh Arabic salad. Very ordinary and disappointing experience tonight at this restaurant. Service was noncommittal and bordering on dismissive, which is not right given the price of the food. Food arrived at all odd times. Red lentil soup was flavorless. Meatballs were dry and stringy, and accompanying beans were bitter. Couldn't eat them. Ordered 2010 wine but 2015 wine was served. Three cheese pizza in contrast was amazing. Sampler platter was good. Owner did remove meatballs from the check. Would not recommend this restaurant. read more

Extremely disappointing! We had eaten here a few times before. The first time was great - but that was several years ago. It's been on a downward spiral since then, and has plummeted with our most recent (and final) visit. To begin with, during the COVID times, we phoned to place an order, but no one picks up the phone - ever! I assumed they were closed, but my wife said maybe they're just busy - so we went. We placed our take-out order, and the food was ready in 25 minutes, as they promised. We saw it there on the counter. However, it took another 15 minutes (!!!) before the owner came back to take our money. Another man had been waiting even longer than we were, and he finally just slapped some cash down on the counter and told the chef he was taking his order and leaving. Apparently, the entire operation is being run by just two people. I guess that's why they never answer their phone. Anyway, when the owner finally came she told us that we had to pay cash (not stated anywhere that we could see) - and she gave us our change, rounded up to the next whole dollar - more than 25 cents. Not a huge deal - but really? Not even asking if that's OK? Not cool. Next: we noticed the chef was NOT wearing a mask... and we saw several customers walking around (not seated, but waiting for food, or to order) with their masks below their noses, or even completely without masks at all. But now... the food! We ordered the seasonal squash pizza, which was supposed to come with "caramelized onion, olive oil, mozzarella, and herbs." What we got was a "pizza" that had slices of squash on top of what *seriously* looked and tasted like KETCHUP. If there were herbs, mozzarella, or olive oil there, you could have fooled me. Or maybe the KETCHUP just obscured it all. We actually intend to go back and ask for a refund for this seriously gross pizza, though who knows if we'll get any satisfaction. Our second pizza was the savory fig & date, which we had eaten there before and enjoyed. This time it was "meh" - not as bad as the ketchup pizza, but it tasted like they scooped some fig jam out of a jar - and whatever cheese it was that they used was not anything like what they had used before, and just not good. We're really bummed out because we had liked this place the first time we ate there, but we're never going back. I've been a regular but the food and service has deteriorated so, we are very hesitant to return. Got carry out not too long ago. Pita was underdone; food mediocre. Went to buffet the other day. Sat and sat and sat waiting for a waiter who tended to the table next to us but never came over....it was 30 min sitting. So we chased anyone down asking for beverages. After all of that, had to turn back the red wine. It was cloudy. The table next to me had to turn back white wine. From buffet - chicken was tainted. Took it right out of my mouth. Fish was old. Couldn't eat it. So I 'noshed' on hummus and some sort of salad which wasn't working because i came hungry. They used to have lamb chops for the buffet but now it's some sort of mixed meatballs. The only thing left at this restaurant that I enjoy is the med platter...but hopefully they will cook the pita if I go back and the lentil soup. Otherwise, I am not happy and that is so sad. She is so sweet. I hope they can get it together. They were amazing when they first opened. Rosendale has nothing at all since the RB closed worth talking about. read more

Arriving home after an evening at the Garden House Restaurant in Rosendale, I couldn't wait to write my first review. This restaurant deserves an exceptional rating. If there were more stars I would give them. The pizza is extraordinary, especially the fig, honey, thyme, and goat cheese with thin crust baked in an outdoor wood fired oven, made to drive the taste buds to certain ecstasy. This followed by a range of middle eastern desserts exotic and absolutely heaven to the palate. Tonight we tried the lamb shish kabob with rice and vegetables. Again a sumptuous dish done to perfection, Not only is the food outstanding, but the family that owns and operates the restaurant deserves the rave reviews as well. They are so warm, sweet, unpretentious, the food they serve is reasonably priced for the generous servings. It's a place you will want to come back to again and again!! read more

This restaurant is very uneven. I had one good meal here and, enchanted by the setting, came back the next night with another friend. The chef kept bringing dishes to the wrong table, as she had the night before, and my friend pronounced her "out to lunch." She really needs to write down which table gets which order. In addition, we ordered the falafel ($6) as an appetizer, and the chef talked us into getting grape leaves, which she said were freshly made and "delicious." The grape leaves were okay but nothing special. Like everything else we ordered, they were too oily, and when I bit into two of them, I tasted something gritty like dirt. I didn't complain but probably should have because I'm pretty sure it was some sort of foreign body that wasn't supposed to be in those grape leaves. When the bill came, we discovered the grape leaves cost $18 -- three times the cost of the appetizer we had originally ordered. Now, this is just disingenuous of the chef -- you need to tell people if the item you are pushing on them costs three times more. In fact, you probably should avoid pushing items on people that cost three times more because it just doesn't look good, and if you do, you'd better make darn sure that item doesn't contain dirt. My friend said his chicken shawarma was "okay but too greasy," and my $26 halloumi salad with salmon was nothing short of an abomination. First, the cheese was horribly greasy as it was fried, which was not indicated on the menu. The salad itself was a greasy blob of fried onions and greens, and worst of all, the olives were those little pre-sliced black ones that you get in a can at the supermarket. I don't know how any self-respecting Middle Eastern restaurant could serve olives from a can. I was really appalled. If you're going to charge $26 for a salad, it had better be fresh, crispy, flavorful, and packed with whole olives. Very disappointing, and it will take me a long time to go back. read more

Terrible service. Very disappointed. No silverware, no napkins, no water. I got up and asked for silverware and napkins and the waitress brought one set of utensils and one napkin for a table of 3. They never brought my entree. We asked for the check and they had crossed my order off and never gave an explanation. Fabulous Wednesday buffet! Delicious fish, yummy veggie dish, rice, plus endless hummus, baba ganoush, and labneh to add as you wish, and I'm always thrilled to see desserts, in this case, fresh peach cobbler. I didn't have the various chicken and meat dishes but others loved them. Great beer/wine list and just so lovely sitting in the dog-friendly garden. Owner came by often to see how everyone was doing. For $15 this is one of the better deals in the Hudson Valley! We will definitely make this a regular stop. read more
