Going to Gary's warms my heart every time - this is a true St. Louis business. The staff are awesome. Gary is always dressed to the nines. There is thought put into all they do - including having colors that match the holiday that is close by on the tables. The food also tastes great and comes out in a timely fashion. I highly recommend stoping by here for dinner next time you go to the Fox or Symphony!

Our group of 6 had a reservation and we were seated promptly. Server brought water and we placed our orders. From here, it goes downhill. Meals came out at different times, my Cesar salad with chicken was last; took over an hour and everyone else at our table was already finished eating. Sprinkled with paprika, it looked pretty. Lettuce was fresh, but croutons were like little brown rocks. It was dressed in a vinaigrette that tasted more like vinegar than anything else instead of a creamy Cesar dressing. The chicken amounted to a couple of tablespoons of cubed chicken. One of our group said the liver and onions was terrible, very tough, and another that the fish and fries was barely warm. The complimentary cheesecake was good, but didn't compensate for the meal. Perhaps it was just an off night. But, when I observed a server carrying a full pitcher of water with his thumb on the inside of the pitcher, that clinched it for me. Sorry, I won't be back.

I have never been to Gary's Fine Dining before, so I had no idea what to expect. And boy, let me tell you, what I got was not what I was expecting! First off I got to meet Gary (the man himself) and his beautiful wife at the door. They are the sweetest couple, and just make you feel like family. Maurice, the bartender, now that man can make a drink. If I'm not familiar with a bartender, I always test their skill by ordering a dirty vodka, martini straight up. Let me tell you, that martini was so smooth, it went down so easily that I had to order another one. When I looked at the menu, I wasn't blown away by it, but when I saw somebody else order the burger, I knew I had to have one. The couple sitting at the bar next to me, were on their way to a show and needed their food fast. The kitchen pulled out all the stops, and I swear that man got his burger in two minutes flat! Now, let's talk about the cherry on top of it all, the live band. When I tell you that this band had my jaw on the floor at the very first note they sang, I am not exaggerating. The band was called G-Spot, and that is exactly what they hit! I was cheering and hooping and hollering for them on every song. Now I don't remember the name of every person who was sing, but let me tell you they ALL had me falling out of my seat. Saman Swanson though, she was hitting high Cs like she was Mariah Carey! All in all I went in not knowing what to expect, and really only anticipating having a drink and then leaving. I ended by having at least five drinks, dinner, and left, feeling like family. To Gary and his lovely wife: you guys have a real gem here, keep up the good work!

My friend wanted to try this place before we went to a performance at Fox so I indulged her. Fine dining is a stretch. 2 things that stand out about this business: very friendly staff and the lovely slice of chocolate cake that they seem to give everyone at meals end. My salmon was just okay but the broccoli served with it was way overcooked. My friend got salmon salad and said it was okay. They don't have a wine menu so the waiter had to tell us what varietals they served. Usually fine dining implies a wine list! Evidently they have music on some nights so that may be a good thing to enjoy there.

During a weekend trip to St. Louis, we stumbled upon this restaurant and were lured in by the sandwich board advertising 2 entrees (with drink and dessert) for $20. The attractive pricing even included tax, so our final bill was an even $20. The atmosphere is charming, and our server was a dear. This place will remain in my mind forever because the double burger was literally the largest burger I have ever consumed. Yes, it's messy, but it was so delicious, as were the crispy fries. As an ardent fan of burgers, I seriously loved this lunch. My meal ended with a slice of heavenly cheesecake that I would probably indulge in too often if I lived there! Worth noting is that they were open in the past, then took a hiatus and have been open again for around a year now, according to our server.

We were so happy to choose Gary's for lunch before a matinee show at the Fox. They had a regular menu and a small menu of lunch specials. The staff was so nice and attentive, and the food options were plentiful and delicious! I tried the catfish nuggets and my friend had the turkey bacon wrap. The fish and fries were fresh and pipping hot! With the twinkling lights and the band setup, I can tell this is quite the place at night. We can't wait to return!

For the first time in forever we got there during happy hour so what do we do? Save money? No, we order two appetizers instead of one! I always do build your own, you fill out the sheet from a pad on the table choosing your ingredients by category. I usually get the beef but last couple times I have ordered chicken but got similar toppings, Spinach, tomato, chipotle aioli, and fried jalapenos on toasted sourdough. Love it! For a small upcharge you can get a salad as a side, I like to do that because I can steal a few of the delicious fries from my companions. The salad is generous, spring mix, red onion, tomato, croutons. It comes with shaved parmesan, but I ask them to leave that off. The champagne vinaigrette is perfect. This is my favorite burger place, but I like that I can get a great chicken sandwich!

Service was great at both the counter and the table. I had the Split & Melt which was delicious. Crispy smash patties, gooey cheese, buttery bread. I also opted to add heirloom tomato to it which added a nice brightness to it. My mom ordered the double, which she said was amazing. We ordered a variety of sides to share. The mac and cheese was amazing, the onion rings were flavorful and crispy, and the fries were also very well seasoned and crispy. Overall, everything was a 10/10. Also, I loved that their fountain sodas are Excel sodas. Will definitely be back to try their draft beers and more burgers!

Price: All together, with a dollar tip, I paid $27 and change, which to me is incredibly pricey for counter service. $2 for a dipping sauce is steep, and for a small container. Next time? I'd skip the dipping sauce and homemade lemonade to save $7. I'll be back but not running to pay this much again. The storefront: the direct out front, small parking lot was packed and people were going into the gated lot to find parking. Only one person working the counter when you first walk in which lead to a long line at the dinner rush that seemed to be moving pretty slow. We got in before the rush and got our food quickly after. Staff were kind and very helpful! Fairly clean with the food runners circling tables often to remove trash.

The worst aspect is the ventilation which needs much work. We came out smelling so greasy and smokey. We seated ourselves and waited a minute for our waitress to assist us. She kept saying she was new, that it was like her second day or something and didn't quite know the menu. She also didn't know how to make a drink, with that being the case why are you allowed to make any cocktails. If you have a limited cocktail menu but an extensive bar selection you would think their cocktail specials were on point. Nooooo. The BF tried a margarita special and it was awful. I tried a special crafted cocktail that was cool that our waitress asked the guy bartending to specially make because she had no clue about what I was talking about. I hate going to a spot where I make drinks better than the bartenders on hand and that's your job. The BF ordered the the garlic burger and I ordered the Korean wings which NEVER came out because our waitress forgot to order them. So I shared food with the BF. The burger was extremely underwhelming, not seasoned at all. How do you specialize in burgers and mess that up. The best item we ate was the fries and the comedy show was good. I love dinner and entertainment. We are burger enthusiast and if this what your restaurant specializes in I expect to be wowed. We saw all the social media hype surrounding this place and were so excited to try them. To find out it was ALL just hype is a real let down. No we will not be returning, the burgers and service speak for themselves.

They're known for their smash burgers and seasoned fries. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get the food bc I had dinner plans, but I did stay for a couple drinks. They have a great selection of spirits and cocktail specials. My friend got a tequila sunrise, so I followed suit. The pour was quite generous, I must say, and I'm def not complaining. The drink was smooth, with the perfect amount of tequila and sweetness. The bartenders working were both friendly and sociable. The vibe was relaxed and is a great alternative when things get too crazy at the dam. While I only got drinks, I'll for sure be back. The smells alone (all good of course) will have you lingering back!

Since then, Olive + Oak has moved to its current location, which is spacious, airy and filled with light. And somehow, our experience last night was even better than what I remembered. I was having dinner with three friends I used to work with, and Abby, our server, was outstanding from start to finish. I arrived first and had a chance to chat with her before everyone else got there. Her energy and personality immediately stood out, and I knew she was going to be a hit with our group. Hard to believe she has been at Olive + Oak for only six months. She kept taking care of us throughout the evening. She really wanted us to try the grilled carrots, so she brought us an order on the house. Later, one of the managers stopped by with wine glasses and poured us some wine, also compliments of the restaurant. Those unexpected touches made an already great evening even more memorable. With four of us, we were able to explore quite a bit of the menu. We started with the Chicken Wings, Charred Octopus and Lion's Mane Steak. All three were distinctive and delicious. The Fried Green Tomato Salad was enormous, easily enough for all four of us to share, and packed with flavor. We learned it was leaving the menu after that night, so our timing was pretty good. For my entrée, I had the Grilled Flank Steak with crispy Parmesan potatoes, along with a side of Olive + Oak fries. Incredible. The fries were world-class, and Abby even tracked down some barbecue sauce for me to dunk them in. And those Grilled Carrots Abby insisted we try? Wow! Definitely one of the surprises of the night. We finished by sharing two new desserts, the Cloud Cake and Samoa Cookie Cake. Both were super delicious and a great way to end the meal. We ultimately spent more than three hours at Olive + Oak, and never once felt rushed. We were there to reconnect, tell stories and enjoy being together again. Great food certainly mattered, but the warm, attentive service made the evening even better. Eight years was way too long between visits. Olive + Oak remains my favorite St. Louis restaurant.
