So to share a small plate with 3 people was just a taste or I am a piggier than others because I wanted more food. I thought the flavors were good but nothing spectacular. Awful. I tried to find a better word to sum it up but failed. Here is why I think the restaurant was awful: - Taste and palate : Almost everything we ordered was badly designed. The taste profiles of almost everything was more concerned with putting impressive sounding names on the menu rather than ensuring a delightful palate. The pickled asian peach salad has a completely incommensurate dressing too acidic for what it requires. The roasted corn soup has so much turmeric that it overpowers the taste of corn or roasted corn that it tastes more like a curry. It was also very salty which sometimes suggest using salt to cover bad taste and I won't be surprised if that was the reason for the excessive use of salt. - Bad quality: while the salad was fresh, the bread that came with it tasted and had a texture of something that had been brought over to guests and taken back as leftovers to the kitchen plenty of times and was being served again. I am guessing the bread was from ACME which is a good quality bread but was buttered too much on one side with oxidized butter and left out so it had turned the bread into a chewy rubber. - Sloppy service: The printed menu was handed out but when trying to order many of the items were either unavailable or not available as described (wine in bottles instead of glasses as advertised). The explanation was that the menu is out of date and we should try again with the online QR code. Overall, a mean for 3 came up to over $120 for an experience that was awful. I thought about the last time I actually had such bad food and I couldn't remember when it was. This wasn't just a subpar or mediocre experience, it was as if someone didn't give a damn about what they are serving their clientele and it showed. Never will I ever set foot in that establishment. I thinks I started this view many years ago. I've only been once and it was on my birthday. I ate the Brassica plate and it was amazing! I ordered the plate because I had horrible eating habits and chose to eat something healthy. My husband and I were terribly curious, so we went. Our lives have changed since, because instead of paying almost $30 for a bunch of veggies on a celeriac mash, we make it ourselves. They were the inspiration for such a thing. My husband had a meat dish that he loved (it was many years ago) and we shared a dessert. All in all, it was a fantastic meal. I mentioned that we went once and that I really loved my experience, but I found it to be like, Greens in the city. Lots of plate and very little food and super pricey. I have been to this place many times and I loved their pizza because their pizza is not as oily and I loved their pizza crust. They change their pizza menu from time to time and they have both vegetarian and meat options. My favorite pizza this time was the summer squash pizza that had pesto on top. I liked the baked squash because it was juicy and the overall taste was very refreshing. We also ordered salads and I liked the dressing very much. For the starter, we had pork belly bowl and it was like porridge with some spicy sauce and a piece of pork belly. The pork tasted good but the porridge was a bit salty. And we also had a risotto that was made with a variety types of grains. It didn't taste as creamy as I would imagine for the Italian risotto, but it was definitely healthy because of the multigrain. Out of all the dishes I have tried, pizza was still my favorite food here. This time was also my first time trying the desserts here and they were all SO GOOD!! We ordered chocolate cake, strawberry shortcake and chocolate ice cream to share. The chocolate cake was AMAZING. It was very fluffy and not like regular cakes. It was like eating clouds because the cake just melted in my mouth. The strawberry shortcake was good but the cake was a bit dry and tasteless. Luckily, the whipped cream on top saved the whole cake. Had a very underwhelming experience here, after paying fine dining prices for what was essentially mid-level California Cuisine presented by inexperienced servers. (Indeed, under most circumstances they would get a three star review, but the disconnect between price and quality cost them another star). Among the issues: I started by asking our server if the bartender could make a Mai Tai (not an easy cocktail to make, which is why I asked). What she came back with was a highball glass filled with premade sour mix and white rum that was indistinguishable from a dive bar daiquiri. Our Monterey squid starter was reasonably tasty, but overly swimming in tomato sauce. The seared halibut main on a bed of summer succotash was beautifully presented, but lacking flavor to to the degree that it seems the kitchen forgot to salt it. The $40 pork shop special was more flavorful, but the texture of the meat did not have the toothsome feel of a well brined and grilled pork chop (making me think it was primarily cooked sous vide and briefly rewarmed on the grill. The chocolate chip cookies for dessert were delicious, but they were presented with lukewarm coffee that had that "definitely not fresh brewed" taste. The servers were attentive enough but seemed inexperienced and slightly nervous, to the degree it felt slightly intrusive. At the end of the night our bill for 3 drinks, an app, two mains, dessert, and coffee was over $180. Perhaps it would be fine for brunch or a casual dinner if you stick to pizza and burgers....but I'm not going to return to find out. read more

I really loved my experience at Gather. The outdoor patio is absolutely adorable and decorated so well; there's music, string lights, and plenty of seating. There's also heating lamps which are so cozy when it gets windy at night. Heads up - everything is done from a QR code at your table -- you place your order there and you open a tab that you can close out whenever you'd like. We ordered a few items and split them for dinner, which I think is the way to go because everything is absolutely delicious. I love the focus on ingredient sourcing. Sweet & Spicy Cauliflower: Crispy but not oily, loved the glaze -- haven't had anything like this and it was probably my favorite thing. 10/10 Falafel Burger: I have never heard of or had almond falafel before and this was SO delicious and light. I did not feel heavy or bloated (sometimes happens when I have regular falafel) Loved the a yogurt and vegetable slaw on it as well. 9/10 Summer Grain Bowl: Loved the mushrooms in this grain bowl, it was very hearty and filling. 7/10 Peach & Truffle Oil Pizza: The freshest peaches ever; loved how they complemented the cheese and the truffle was not too heavy handed at all. I have been here a ton of times for lunch and have always been happy with the meals and service. I have recently started stopping by in the evenings and I discovered they have a back bar where you can order the full menu and the two bartenders, Prhi and Nick that have served me are very personable and inviting. The bartenders are pumping out drinks to the entire restaurant while keeping the bar in top shape. Not the best burger, not the best pizza. Nice view. Visited Gather on the advice of a colleague to try the hamburger. $20 with cheese, it was overall a disappointment. Problem was probably in the preparation - despite ordering it medium, the burger emerged quite maroon in the middle, which would have been okay if not for the absolute lack of a Maillard crust on the meat which ended up evoking the limp mouthfeel of Big Mac meat. The beef flavor was reasonable, with clean but not particularly complex or aged flavors. Overall a much less compelling burger than that of the similar thin-patty sandwiched offered at Clove and Hoof in Oakland. Also got the mushroom pizza. Flavor okay, though preparation was disappointing in that the crust at the tips of slices were soaked all the way through. The appetizers I tasted were all delicious, the serving sizes were fair, and the wine list had some good options. Dessert is worth saving room for. The other times I have been here, whatever I had was totally forgettable, but they do salads well. The ambiance is fancy but casual. I would like to love this place more. Wow. I mean wow. One hears of such food and dining experiences as a half-mythical joke. The super-sustainable, farm to table, everything green and recycled, and eco-responsible restaurant--a concept eatery with a 21st century moral center. Righteo. I'm a Berkeley lad, born and raised, and I know the drill. So when invited here by friends of friends, I went in with an open mind and more to the point prepared to be less than thrilled. And in some ways, it was very pleasant. The dining space is nice, if a bit crowded. The service was excellent from start to finish. If I were more suitably soused from their estimable cocktails (my first mistake), I probably wouldn't have minded the meal too much. I give Gather two stars for its efficient and inviting atmosphere and their mixologist. But alas I was sober. And o the meal! The word outraged comes to mind. From starter to finish, I was insulted not only at the quality of presentation and taste, but at the preposterous price tag they put on this organic pablum. The owners don't even have the moral intestinal fortitude to be exclusively vegan or vegetarian or gluten free. Meat products appear on their menu and on the table--albeit infinitesimally. So we began by ordering their squash pizza as an entree to share ($21). The crust, to its credit, had the structural integrity to support the vegetarian offering, but had no flavor whatsoever. Cardboard would have been a suitable substitute (recyclable, don't you know). The vegetables and dollops of gelatinous pesto were placed haphazardly upon its surface, possibly in a misguided attempt to look artistic. The toppings were alright, but again lacked anything resembling taste. The main courses arrived quickly after. My friend had the burger, which admittedly looked good and he uttered no complaints. His friends decided to share the most expensive item on the menu--black cod ($32). The waitress had warned them that that would be "a light meal" for two, but good God! The fish was quite literally hidden by a slice of squash. It sat half-submerged in a lifeless and unattractive watery broth. A few vegetables floated randomly, forlorn to the culinary fate to which they had been consigned. As for me, I ordered the vegetarian and gluten free grain risotto and was presented with a bowl of what my mother would call glop. Underneath a dusting of parmesan (probably in an attempt to hide what lurked beneath) rested lumpy brown gruel. The mushrooms were scarcely distinguishable from the "rice." To the taste, it was bland. And unlike most risottos, which should be al dente, Gather's offering was crunchy. Stoically, I ate it all and was suitably rewarded by having it sit heavily in my stomach for hours. My friend's friends tried to put the best face on it, as they were the ones who suggested we gather at Gather. And I am frankly glad that they also offered to pay. Because I saw the bill. To say it was twice what it probably should have been is to be kind. This was more than a bad meal; this was a taunting insult. Normally, I give restaurants at least two and sometimes more chances. But not this time. Judging from the reviews of Gather--professional and amateur--I recognize I'm in a minority. First time to the Gather. Great location, love the vibe. Our service started with coffee and donut holes! Which I have to say the donut holes were the best part of the entire restaurant! They were fresh and warm, and came with a delicious dipping sauce, and went great with the coffee! On our table, we had 2 glass milk bottles that were filled with water, so we could refill our glasses as we liked. Super cute idea but unfortunately are bottles were dirty. We asked our server to bring us clean water bottles. He immediately took the bottles and brought back two fresh bottles, but they too were dirty! There were seven of us there for brunch four of us liked our lunch, and three of us were very disappointed in our food. The presentation of the plates were absolutely beautiful. But what they had in beauty, they lack in flavor! The restrooms were not clean, the door leading into the bathrooms are so dirty touching them really grossed me out! I had high hopes coming into Gather for brunch one Sunday but was sorely disappointed. My experience failed to deliver on so many different fronts. I'll start with the (few) positives. I think that Gather is popular because of its ambience and how it markets itself. Both the indoor and outdoor dining areas seem quite nice and visually pleasing, and I enjoyed the wood-themed aesthetic. I think that a lot of Gather's appeal comes from it appearing to be a higher-end, nicer alternative to all the quick and mediocre eats you can typically find in a college town. However, that was about it as to what I was impressed by. I ordered the brunch pizza, as well as a side of bacon and scrambled eggs. Unfortunately, the brunch pizza was mediocre at best. It seriously lacked in flavor and seemed like a bunch of brunch ingredients were thrown onto pizza dough without much thought as to how their flavor profiles interacted with each other. My girlfriend, who is very rarely a picky eater, agreed with me and said that it "tasted like vomit." The scrambled eggs were not great either. They came in one big clump and were completely flavorless. They tasted like they were made from powder. I don't consider myself to be a good cook but I could have made better scrambled eggs for 50 cents, when I paid $6 at Gather. Lastly, it is very difficult to go wrong with bacon, and I will admit that the bacon was more or less fine; however, I still felt that it was way too crispy and breaking apart like a cracker. Yes, it's hard to mess up bacon like it is to mess up other less-forgiving foods, so I still enjoyed eating it. Nevertheless, it was some of the less enjoyable bacon I've had in my life. To top it all off, the service at Gather was extremely poor as well. The wait staff was not very attentive. When my table asked for additional condiments like hot sauce, we were told that they would come back with it. It never came. I really wanted to enjoy Gather, but genuinely struggle to grasp parts of my experience that I can share as positive. read more

While visiting Berkley, my cousin and I took a leap of faith by trying this place. We were not familiar with the area and we didn't even bother to look online what restaurants were good. We drove by it twice and noticed the name "Gather" and thought it was inviting. It was also the only restaurant on the strip that looked busy. Walked in and was immediately greeted by the host. He gave us 2 choices. Sit in the main dining or sit by the open kitchen. Of course, we sat by the open kitchen because we both love to watch people cook our food. A couple sitting next to us ordered a pizza and we were both like "Wow that looks good". So we decided to try a vegan one called Spicy Tomato (olive, caper, cashew puree, chili oil). One bite and we were speechless. This was a different kind of pizza. The ingredients were tasty, well balanced, and spicy and the crust was perfect. We also shared a Roasted Chicken which I was very hesitant to order because "it's just chicken". Again, I shut the hell up after taking one bite. It was super tender, simple but delicious served with cranberry beans, collards and Massa brown rice that's similar to risotto. Dam this was good! For cocktails, I got a couple of rounds of Manhattan with Four Roses. They were very good and only $11 each. The vegan pizza was $21 and chicken was $27. It's pretty steep but so worth it because the quality was really impressive. I'm glad that we stopped here for dinner. We didn't know what to expect but we were amazed by the food, service and lively ambiance. read more

Came here for with a big group for brunch and loved everything! A quick summary of what we ordered and ratings: Brunch pizza (5/5): Heavy but seriously amazing! Has a bunch of traditional 'breakfast foods' on it (bacon, eggs, potatoes, etc.). Shakshuka pizza (5/5): Probably my favorite of the three pizzas - the base is a more traditional cheese pizza but the peppers and radicchio on top add so much (the menu online says arugula but I think in my picture its radicchio? Either way, a gorgeous and equally tasty pizza!) Spicy tomato pizza (5/5): The crust on this is a little thicker since I think it's vegan, it kind of resembles cauliflower pizza crust. A great option and definitely a favorite and slightly spicy! Falafel & Eggs (4/5): Another vegan-friendly brunch dish, comes together nicely with a lot of different flavors. French Toast (4/5): I couldn't find this dish on the online menu so I'm not sure what the exact name is, but this was one of the only 'sweet' brunch dishes as of the time that I went. Has a strawberry compote and a whipped cream cheese frosting over thick challah bread. Great but not super special in my opinion (though I don't know if they're necessarily known for sweeter breakfast dishes :)). I can't wait to be back! read more

I came here on a Sunday morning and it was very packed and the wait was over an hour so definitely reserve ahead of time. Although, the staff here are so nice and really try to accommodate everyone. I tried the brunch pizza and definitely recommend this. I'm picky with pizza, and I haven't had eggs on a pizza before but this was so good especially with the caramelized onions. The frittata had mushrooms which I do not mind but for some reason it tasted weird and my friend said the same thing. The potatoes tasted good though. It was creamy and rich, but the thinly sliced turnip tops, tender and sweet turnip pieces, and large, hearty hen of the wood mushrooms added freshness and lightness to the dish.
