I love Gather's mission, and I was very much looking forward to having a birthday dinner there. In the end, all four of us really enjoyed our food, but we all felt less than great about the service. It started with the waitlist. I was glad to see them so busy, and happy to wait for an outside table. But there was no one at the door to even say hello, then three different people took our names before we were actually added to the waitlist. It was a bit of a wait, but can't blame them for that. Once we sat down, it was a little too long before we saw a waiter. Then we were introduced to the QR codes and the phone app for ordering our food. Okay, I'm a fan of technology, and I don't actually mind ordering that way. The app was easy to understand. But we didn't see our waiter again until he brought our food. Our drinks came after the food. And we found it hard to get anything else we needed from our waiter in the meantime. Ketchup? Extra fork? Etc. Bottom line: food was great, service was less than great. They seemed understaffed by design, and it didn't work for us. read more

Went here with my sister for a belated birthday lunch. It's a big restaurant and the decor is very artisanal. We went on a Sunday and had reservations for 1:15 pm, but we came 15 min early. They seated us pretty much right away! We started off with cocktails (of course). I got the Pippen Refresher and it does exactly that! It's super refreshing! Not too strong (alcohol-wise) and tastes like sparkling lemonade. Definitely recommend getting some cocktails here. They are a little pricey ($12), but not too unreasonable. Then, my sister and I ordered the Spicy Tomato pizza and the burger. The Spicy Tomato pizza is vegan and doesn't come with cheese, which we didn't realize, but didn't mind. The crust is SO GOOD. It's very thin, but the crust at the very end of the slice is thicker, airy and pure heaven. The topping itself was good, but I think next time, we're gonna try the one with cheese and maybe add some meat. The spicy tomato had a good kick, not too spicy. The cashew sauce was creamy, and the olives were very good too. However, it was just too saucy, so it was more like a bread with some dip, rather than a pizza. Still, it was very good. The burger was A-MA-ZING. The meat was cooked perfectly. It was flavorful and juicy. It came with cheese and onions. Along with the burger came with a spring mix salad and french fries. The fries were perfectly seasoned and crispy. Ask for the aioli! They don't have ranch, but they have aioli that tastes SO GOOD with the fries. Service was AWESOME. Our waiter was very nice and our food came out faster than I thought it would. Love the ambiance of the place. Overall, the food was very good. I would love to come back here again and try another pizza. They have a lot of options for vegans and vegetarians, which is great. It's a bit on the more expensive side, but the quality is worth it. Booked a 8:30pm last minute reservation and once we arrived they made it clear we were the last reservation (which we were surprised how early they closed on a Saturday night). Went here cause my cousins were visiting from Canada and celebrating their 40th birthday so figure this would be a great spot. Was treated poorly rushing us and telling us that the kitchen closes soon as we were looking at the menu. Rushed us to leave and wasn't given the dessert menu for my cousin who we wanted to celebrate and sing happy birthday too, so never got that moment. If they don't want customers at 8:30, don't allow reservations at 8:30 where you're treated poorly. Pizza was good but my salad was poor and my ceviche had like 3 pieces of seafood and the rest was onions. Worst ceviche I've ever had. We could've booked a different restaurant that was open later but didn't know we were getting there at close due to the reservation allowance. Feel bad for my cousins from Canada as I feel like this wasn't a good representation of California restaurants-service and food wise. I'd avoid for any special occasion. read more

Menu is extremely selective and they had some weird appetizers. writing this 3 hours later and I already consumed a gallon of water Becuase of how SALTY my meal was. So we just ordered the classic bread to start and it was $3. It cate with oil and a pile of SALT. The bread would have been better heated. It was hard and chewy but not awful. The burger was good but expensive for what it was. It was cooked nicely but extremely salty. The fries OMG WERE SO SALTY. And I put salt on everything, I love salt, but this was INEDIBLE. I drank literally one gallon of water after the meal. Hours after dinner we were still thirsty. My mom said he taste buds are "permanently damaged from the salt". Dramatic, but low key true. My mom ordered the zucchini pasta vegetable dish and it was so salty and gross. There are so many old people here and crowded so maybe they can't taste the salt. This place lives up to the hype! I thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Gather. From the moment that we walked in to the to moment we walked out the door everything was flawless. Greeted by a friendly hostess and promptly seated. We were then introduced to our server Fernando. Without exaggeration Fernando may be one of the best servers in the Bay Area. He was attentive but not intrusive, very friendly, and always had a smile on his face. My wife and I both started with a couple of drinks and then ordered our entrees. I chose the Five Dot Ranch Burger and she chose the Acme Walnut French Toast. The food was served within 10 minutes after we ordered. Everything came out perfectly. The burger came with fries and mixed green salad. It was cooked to a perfect medium and was very delicious. The French toast was very tasty as well with walnuts and a reduction of cherries, currant, and white raisins. The total bill came to $41.00 and we were very pleased with the experience. Gather is one of my go-to places for brunch in Berkeley. Not as popular or quaint as La Note or as college-y as Sunny Side, it's a good place to bring family or visitors, especially if they are paying. The fancy farm-to-table menu feels more at home in the Gourmet Ghetto than in downtown Berkeley, but it's still very approachable and down to earth. I'm a fan of the Mushroom Ragout ($16) with Soft-Cooked Egg ($3), the Poached Eggs in spicy lamb ragout ($18), and the Spicy Tomato Pizza ($21) with Egg ($3). The Country Breakfast ($14) is a great comfort food option; the potatoes, in particular, are outstanding. I thought the Community Grains Amber Wheat Pancakes ($13.50) were just okay though; while still enjoyable, the texture was a just a bit grainy for me. Service here can be a little inconsistent. At one moment, they are friendly and attentive, and then the next, they are nowhere to be found. But in general, there's a lot to like about this restaurant. The maître d' at Gather was fabulous; he really made our experience here special. We requested an outdoor table for two with our dog; he gave us the perfect spot. When our drinks didn't arrive before our entrees (some kind of mix-up at the bar), he had them rushed out AND comped them. Plus, everything was delicious! House old fashioned? Hella good! Wow! Cant recall the last time I had such a bad experience at a restaurant. You need to order online - no prob. I ordered first in my group and my very basic order came so late that almost everyone else was done when my meal arrived. What happened to the skill of serving a group (only 6 of us) at relatively the same time. As I have some dietary restrictions I carefully review menus. I was thrilled to see a pizza listed without cow cheese. All but one of the pizzas listed had mozzarella. I awaited my pizza and waited and waited. Finally it arrived....with mozzarella. Their menu carefully lists gluten free, vegan etc. Having dairy on an item and not listing it is a big oversight. Ordered basic eggs with a side of toast. I got 1 piece of bread for $6. Nothing comped. No apology for this awful service experience. People next to us sat patiently only to be told after quite awhile they need to order online. I've been here for lunch and drinks, but this was my first brunch at Gather and I was really pleased! As usual, both La Note and Venus had extremely long waits to get in and so I thought I'd see what the situation was here on Saturday at 10:30am. It was less than half full, which drastically changed by 11:30am. The service was really attentive, but it didn't take quite a while for our food to come out. I had the MUSHROOM SCRAMBLE and it was absolutely delicious. I really do love a good scramble. The eggs were super fluffy and not greasy. The toast was delicious and I was I pleasantly surprised by how wonderful the tomato jam was. The potatoes that they come with are also tasty and cooked very well. Go here now!!! If I lived closer I would definitely stop by often because this is hands down one of my favorite restaurants of all time. The service here is so friendly and attentive and the way they describe each dish makes you feel like you are a judge on Iron Chef (which is, I think, everyone's ultimate goal in life). You can't go wrong with whatever you order here. The menu is frequently changing but every time I've been I've been elated with how good everything is. One thing for sure, order the pizza!! This place used to be great. I don't know if it's Covid related or what, but it's really gone downhill. My friend and I were here a few weeks ago for brunch. The lunch/brunch(?) menu was pretty limited and very pricey. I remember the food being expensive before but well worth it so I didn't think much of it. I used to come mainly for the craft cocktails, which were fantastic. This time I was informed that they only serve beer and wine at lunchtime. Okay, I thought, I'll have a mimosa. Standard brunch fare. Nope, they "don't do mimosas", as I was rudely informed by the rushed woman at the register. We got overpriced glasses of rosé and sat down. The grilled cheese sandwiches were very good, but small, and served with a huge amount of fried with ketchup. No other sauce option. IMO, this place's best feature is the ambiance. The pizza overall had a great harmony of flavors from spicy tomato paste sauce, cashew cream, and other ingredients. I wish I could rate Gather a 4.5. I came here with a group of 4 for brunch. We had reservations and were seated immediately. The restaurant has a great ambiance and good service. The group split the kale salad, maitake mushroom pizza, poached eggs, and amber grains pancakes family style. The dishes were good individually, but the combination was better. The maitake pizza was a special standout. I absolutely loved the very thinly sliced squash topping that baked somewhere between soft and crispy (Vegetarian pepperoni!). It paired especially well with the mushrooms, capers, and herbs. The pancakes were delicious, but had I ordered this dish alone, I would have probably been disappointed, trying to taste more than small bites from my fellow brunchers. I also really enjoyed the cooked dinosaur kale salad. I saw some reviews about the food being overly-salty. I don't necessarily agree, but the menu did seem to incorporate a lot of capers. Potentially something to avoid for those salt-sensitive. Alternatively, you can ask for the complimentary bread service which comes with a delicious olive oil. A perfect way to tame the salty taste on the tongue! Rating a 4.5 because I think you really need to order a lot of dishes and share family style to have the best experience. It's hard to get a table at Gather for four without a reservation but once got our reservation, I thought the food and service was worth it. The bad first: the pizza quality has declined over the past few years. The spicy tomato pizza with cashew cream used to be my favorite in the Bay Area but they've skimped on the Arabiata sauce making me wonder, why!?!! When the sauce is delicious! The good: the heirloom mushroom risotto (which can be made vegan) with mixed grains was cooked to perfection. I highly recommend it! The kale salad is also fantastic! Notes: Parking is sparse in downtown Berkeley, so plan to walk a ways or park in the expensive near by garage. Local Halibut (citrus couscous, sweet & sour rhubarb, fava leaves, Meyer lemon-green garlic salsa) - Saucy, light, with the fish on the slightly chewier side, and pleasant mixture of flavors. One of my wife's favorite places to eat in Berkeley. I don't love it quite as much as she does, but it is quite good. The food is also fresh and tasty. Their brunch items have been good. We've also been quite pleased with their pizzas and their lunch (non-brunch) sandwiches as well. Service is also great. The ambiance is really appealing to me -- high ceilings, lots of windows with natural light, and green plants everywhere. It's got a rustic hipster-y feel to it.
