When thinking of a name for a coffee shop what would come to your mind? I think the people behind "Gather" gave the naming a lot of thought. The word embodies their mission of being inclusive and what they are about as a non profit organization. I had no clue three months ago that this shop opened and the fact they would attempt to reinvent what we know as a place to grab a caffeine fix. Has Gather succeeded changing the game? Well yes and no and I will continue. The location is remote for many that reside on the Southside of the peninsula. The area is know as Western Branch. It is behind Cracker Barrel and beside Lowes in a strip. The signage is great on one side of the building that faces the road, the other side has none. There is also a ground level sign that list all the businesses. On my mid morning visit plenty of parking. The lot and walks were free from debris. A patio with three, or four tables available for guest. So what is special about Gather any way. I learned quickly when I met my first employee Kurt who was super friendly, outgoing and informative about the reason their business is different than the competition. Gather is a non profit affiliated with Western Branch Community Church. Salaries and expenses are taken and the rest in the non profit. WOW! I did not expect that at all and how cool! He even pointed the pastor out who was working on a nearby lap top. The decor is anything but cookie cutter coffee shop, but seems to be a take from another locally owned shop that ceased operation off Lynnhaven Parkway two years ago Cafe Moka. Concrete floors, drop bulb lighting,a mixture of wood tables, comfy couches, chairs and a couple of machines that diffuses essential oils. A plank board accent wall is neat and again reminiscent of defunct Cafe Moka. The L shaped bar is attractive with white subway tile on the wall and a bakery display. It all adds up to a comfortable vibe. A small merchandise cart has mugs etc. There is enough room on the floor to expand. So with a whole lot going for Gather they must deliver on the goods, so how about the coffee! They pull from three roasters and best of all one is local in Prescription that's owned by their new GM Blake. The other two Red Rooster and big daddy out of PA La Colombe that has made a presence at the Oceanfront in Mays Parlor. Syrups are all imported from France except Ghirardelli. They also have draft brew from Lacolombe. They also offer pour overs. I ordered a peppermint latte and could not resist a rainbow bagel that utilizes food coloring. Several other items could have been chosen. They also offer soup and sandwiches. I asked Kurt where the bakery items come from, he had no idea. Disappointing because thats good info. Meghan made my latte and I grabbed a seat at one of the six bar stools. My latte using Lacolombe beans was served with my bagel and cream cheese in around five minutes, or so. A side bar has straws, napkins and sugar. The peppermint latte was attractive to the color and had nice art. The taste test is a 4 out of 5. I tasted no peppermint, but it was still delightful. The bagel was cold to the touch and and the taste was dry even with cream cheese added. Kurt checked in on me and said that he would provide a sample of the draft coffee also using La Colombe, it's his favorite. Now that was fabulous! Probably the best cold brew I've ever tasted which says a lot being a Three Ships Coffee fanatic. No sugar, no milk, just ice and wowzers! When finished I left the items on the bar as staff clears 100%. This is a nice departure from most shops. The space also has a conference room that accommodates 15, or so with a large flat screen TV for $35 an hour. Or $100 spent its FREE! I assume that there was a need and Gather is filling it for the area. In the morning sun pours in the room, so blinds needed to be added. I think Gather is a fabulous addition to Hampton Roads. They have a ton going for them and have rewritten the playbook with our first non profit coffee shop in the area, but they have not reinvented the wheel. My service was superb by everyone I interacted with. The coffee options are well above average. However, the basic food item I got left me underwhelmed. I need to go back for other food items and hope to learn the source. I would recommend giving them a try, but I cannot say it's worth the 35 minute drive I had from the beach. I hope to check them again next year. read more

I've been here quite a few times since my first time, over a year ago now. I love that they have less-common flavors for their coffees as well as smoothie options. Sometimes I just want to get some work done at a coffee shop, but I'm already maxed out on caffeine, so I appreciate the variety here. Their food is good for the price. It seems to me like they've lowered some of their prices since the beginning, which is always a plus as the customer. I've tried a few of their toasts, such as avocado or strawberry ricotta, which are a solid snack to help you power through your work session or to enjoy while meeting with a friend. I wouldn't necessarily say anything special, but good nonetheless. I love the mix of comfy chairs, high-tops, and tables next to outlets so there's a spot for whatever occasion you decided to stop in for. They've also made my drinks in my reusable cup which is great! I would definitely recommend coming by Gather if you're looking for a workspace, meeting location, or even just a cozy place to read a book and/or kill a couple of hours if you're in the area. Great food! I got the supreme BLT without avocado with apple slices and green tea w/honey. There is an area where you can add whatever you like to your beverage (syrup, sugar, honey etc.). All staff were wearing masks. I'm not sure if they were mandatory but I just made sure to wear mine. The furniture was also set so that social distancing rules could be followed. Now on to the food. This coffee shop does a PHENOMENAL job at making you feel welcome! I walked in, and head to what seemingly appears to the counter towards the back of rhe coffee shop. As I approached the counter, I was greeted with a hello and warm smile. The woman was patient and corteous. That was very reassuring since I was nervous by this being my first time coming here. I brought my laptop and study materials with me. I asked the lady at the front if there were any outlets. She kindly replied there were, and said she'd remove a customer who h as d been there a while. It turned out the customer was her husband! It was so funny, I laughed and sat down in the black, comfortable chair with the nice sized wooden table in front. Okay, let's get into the meat of this review (based on the items that I bought): Coffee 5/5: I got the White chocolate latte, it was delicious! It had a nice taste, and wasn't super sweet or bitter. It was just the way I like my lattes! Food 5/5: I got the Supreme BLT sandwich. It came with avocado. This sandwich was BOMB! It had mayo, and all the other toppings you'd expect on a BLT. But the quality of ingredients that went into this: PHENOMENAL. The chips on the side tasted like kettle cooked xhips and was delicious. Decor 5/5: I love the modern look! It's so spacious. They have comfortable seating. The bathroom is even cute with cute figurines and pictures! Service 5/5: Excellent Price 4/5: It's pricey, especially on the food, but it's good quality! I ordered Sushi toast, a double espresso and a latte. I wasn't expecting the latte to be over the top with whipped cream. This is completely my fault, as I should've told them how I would like my latte. Sushi toast however was a 5/5. I was a bit disappointed with the espresso. The extraction was bitter considering they already scooped out the crema. Maybe I'm just picky with my coffee. I'll give it a shot next time. I wouldn't recommend this place for coffee alone but that sushi toast got me hooked lol. To add, the shop's ambience was chill. It has that industrial hipster vibe that I like. Overall, is 4/5. I came to your location, after a strong recommendation. I ordered a bacon croissant and a butter croissant, with a coffee and hot chocolate. I waited nearly 40 minutes for my food, which made me late for my scheduled event. I knew it was taking a while, but had no idea it was 40 minutes because I did not have a phone nor a watch. While I understand some things take more time than others, this wait time was truly disappointing. No one offered anything extra to accommodate the wait, no one apologized for the wait, not even a thank you when I was leaving. While I'm not from this area, I frequent my favorites when I'm here. My husband and I popped in for a quick lunch before an appointment. We asked the cashier if the food would be out relatively quickly and she assured us it would as it wasn't busy (no other food orders before or after ours). We sat waiting for 30 minutes and our food still hadn't come out. We walked up to ask for a refund as we had to leave, and we saw our food just sitting on the counter but instead it was packed up to go. 10/10 would not recommend. Needed lunch and wanted something cold and delicious. Glad I found this place. No line. Very nice and clean. Enough space for all the people there during lunch. Comfy chairs and couches. Perfect in every way! We went on a Saturday afternoon. It was located at a little shopping plaza near the Lowe's and had minimal parking space, it wasn't too crowded. Inside the cafe was very open, big windows add brightness and make the cafe more welcoming. I can say our first visit was very pleasant. Very friendly and kind employees. The atmosphere is great in this place. I like the simplicity and lighting of the entire store.They had comfy couches that make the place look more homey, and the kitchen with white subway tile on the wall and a baked goods display adds to the clean vibe. This place has so much potential yet somehow missed the mark for us. The bad: Table was quite dirty. It doesn't have a real kitchen and you feel that acutely. Cappuccino is strong which is good but has a burnt quality. Portion sizes are dainty. Husband's coffee frappe tasted like heavy cream not coffee - no flavor at all. The food is unremarkable and more cafeteria style, truly as stated on menu small bite size, not meal size (for breakfast). $5.99 for avocado toast? No salt, no pepper, no drizzled olive oil, no toasted sesame seeds? Very ordinary toast. Ummm, that's a bland serving right there for too much money. (I make this much better at home and I rarely make anything better at home so that was a disappointment). Personally, I would not have served something so spartan to a guest in my home. We also had the peanut butter and strawberries on toast, a new special $3.99. Much better value. Tasty? Yes. Fulfilling, no. And, lastly, a feta spinach pastry, which is delicious but not made in-house. So, two pieces of toast, a small side of fruit, a small pastry, two coffees for $26.68 including 20% tip. Beautiful place. However, the two people that were working were blase' and honestly lethargic- zero personality and not in the least bit helpful. I ordered a latte based on the lattes I enjoy at Starbucks. This latte was bitter and strong, asked for more milk and sweetner, still unable to drink it. Gather popped up in the area at just the right time. My other favorite coffee shop closed their main location and opened on on the Regent University campus making it a pain in the butt to get to. Needless to say, I was ecstatic to hear of another great coffee shop in the area. Their espresso is out of this world! So good! My husband and I have traveled Europe extensively and have come to the conclusion that Gather has the BEST LATTE IN THE WORLD!! Also, that Draft Latte.. yeah, you should get it! It's a knockout!
