Henry and Kevin are you two fantastic guys who have something truly special here. They came by my job and and I got to talk to them about food when they invited me to eat at Gatlin's. Gotta say I am blown away, the food was 10/10. The moist brisket absolutely melted in your mouth, I wish I had ordered more! The spicy sausage was very well seasoned with a great spicy kick at the end. Their homemade bbq sauce definitely has a unique blend of sweet with spicy undertones. Definitely recommend ordering extra! The Mac-n-cheese was seasoned which I didn't expected but added a ton of great flavor! The baked beans and rice were great additional sides. However the SMOKED CORN, oh my god. That was the best corn I've had a long time. It's bursting with flavor and has onion and bell pepper in it. Highly, highly, highly recommend! As a native Texan, I'm saying that this place is LEGIT. Friendly service. A little bit of everything on the menu. Plates with sides, sandwiches, baked potatoes, meat by the lb, wings. Took some friends from Germany for authentic Texas BarBQue!!! Gatlin's never disappoints! The brisket was perfect, the ribs were fantastic and the sausage was good & spicy! Food is great, recovery is terrible. I dined in and ask for an order to go. Register person repeated the order, we ate and I came back to check on it. The lady told me it was coming out. Waited another 20 min. Manager finally checked and told me I wasn't charged. I was never given a receipt to check myself. Manager was rude and did not want to recover the business Poor attitude. I had the pulled pork sandwich with mac and cheese, while the hubby had the sliced brisket with beans and potato salad. The positive: lots f selection for meat and sides, as well as the dipping sauce was just right. The negative: too much fat on the meat. BOTH meats. I spent more time picking out the fat from the pulled pork as well as the hubby eating around the fat in the brisket. there should be some fat in the meat for flavor, etc. However, you shouldn't be spitting out fat in every bite. I can't say enough to describe what a gem this place is. The food is delicious and the owners have always been there when I've come around and they've invariably treated me like like loving family. When I've had to order online for pickup the system they utilize is very modern, easy to use, and I've never had any issues. I've been wanting to get here for years and just never made it, I finally made it over the weekend, I will say, for the price point, I was slightly disappointed by the portion size. However, I enjoyed my meat choices of spicy sausage and the spare ribs....my sides however, were just OK. The greens had an odd/vinegary flavor to them and wayyyyy too many stems! The mac & cheese was just OK, could use a little more seasoning, everyone has their own preference for mac & cheese and theirs just isn't mine, whatever cheese/cheese sauce is used didn't taste like much, I prefer and more cheddar cheese flavor with mine. I will return, but I think I'll just order meats next time. This spot is fairly new to the Oak Forest area. The location is nice with plenty of parking. The interior is that of a traditional BBQ place with a HTown spin on it. Restrooms and dining room were kept clean and the young lady working the cashier line was very nice and helpful. The place smells delicious. We went during the new breakfast hours. The proteins we ordered which were the sliced ham and sausage patties were absolutely delightful. The grits were a bit too buttery for me personally. The pancake was a traditional pancake served with butter and syrup. The portions were nice for the price point as well. I plan to go back for lunch and or dinner to try their BBQ. Did a simple order just to sample some options. 1/4 of brisket and 1/4 of venison sausage. Both options were good. Certainly good enough to go back for a second round later on. Brisket had really nice flavorful rub. However the rub had an interesting flavor. Almost a bitterness. Can't exactly put my finger on it. One of the top barbecue places in Texas I think not! We will not be back the brisket was OK. We had the moist. It was moist potato salad was a scoop of mush with no flavor. The baked beans were straight out of the bush beans can. The Texas toast you pay $.60 extra for it's not even Texas toast is just a thick slice of stale bread. I haven't tried Gatlins since they were a small place in the heights, when we tried to go to this location when it opened, we weren't impressed by the lines/crowds and if I recall they had a fruit smoked brisket , stating this was the only bbq left. So I decided to go last week, after my fav place not too far away that doesn't know how to have any handicapped or extra parking once again disappointed me with that issue. I noticed that Gatlins DOES have good parking, they should teach that trendy bbq place up the road how to design a PROPER parking lot. I thought there would be a long line, but realized the man in front of me was waiting for someone and I didn't wait but 10 mins after that to place my order. I ordered the two meat plate: brisket with bark (I thought wrong when I thought this would be moist with the black on the ends like others have it) and sausage. Two sides were macaroni and cheese and collards. The macaroni DID NOT taste like it came out of a box, that's preposterous people. If you can make homemade macaroni better; then do so. I thought it was really good and added more salt because I do that to everything anyhow. The collards were excellent. The sauce was watery. But between the two trendy places in the heights they and Gabbys have the best )not one of the trendy places but their bbq has gotten so full of fat I don't really go there anymore ) The sausage was perfect! Very tender and salty and the original wasn't spicy. The brisket was disappointing, however. It was hard like shoe leather and burnt. I know I asked for bark, but not beef jerky. It seemed like old meat that had set out, no salt or spices on it so very little flavor. The best part of my order was the rum cake. Holy cow! It's the best, very heavy on the alcohol (don't like that part) but it has this cream filling . It was wonderful. I would go back and try them just to get the same dinner but maybe would tell them Not to give me a burnt piece of meat haha. I could even find a handicapped spot, which is super important for me. It was just Ok. I've had better, and I've had worse. The staff was friendly. The restaurant was clean. The portions and price was comparable to other barbecue restaurants. The brisket was dry. Everything we got was dry, and the sauce wasn't great. I'm not wowed by Gatlin's. I do wish they would decide if they want to be full service or self serve. The wait time on food is average, biggest issue is finding a place to sit, limited seating too. The meats, everything serviceable nothig that is just awesome, good and consistent. Its the Bulleit Bourbon of BBQ joints, it ain't Blanton's and doesn't have a thing that would equal a Pappy's but its a hell of a lot better than most. Once again I am in Houston in search for another BBQ place listed as Texas Monthly Top 50. Gatlin's was not too far from my hotel so decided to find it and since it was Monday checked their website to make sure they were open. It was easy to find and when I pulled in to park noticed it was in a new shopping center. I walk in during lunchtime to find no line but something smelled great. I don't think Houston is as BBQ crazy like Austin where if your place has no line then must not be good. I order some brisket and spare ribs. They offer 3 choice of brisket types from dry to moist. Ordered macaroni & cheese and potato salad for my sides along with sweet tea. There is plenty of seating with TVs showing sports channels. It was a very nice setup and there is a very nice lady walking around helping customers out. I felt she provided that extra touch of customer service to make you feel welcomed. We had a buzzer to know our order was ready. You pick up your order. My first impression is the meat is on real plates versus paper or butcher paper. Seems fancy compared to other many places I have eaten at. Kind of like BBQ fine dining. The brisket was soft and tasted very good and the ribs too. The meat on the ribs just fell off the bone. After one bite I see why they were on the list. The sides were very good too and enjoyed the sweet tea. As we were enjoying this tasty meal I notice more people showed up keeping a steady line of people ordering food. So we got out sticker for the TM BBQ Passbook and will remember this place again on future visits to Houston. read more
