Tried to support this place because it's local and right down the street but I just can't anymore. The BBQ is nothing to write home about does not compare to even a rudys or other chains. There are always so many people working but service is always slow. The meat should already be cooked it just needs to chop or sliced you aren't fooling anyone. This really a three and a half. But I will say I'm more impressed the second time around more than the first! One thing Gatlins gets right is the portions! The sheer size of the plate was massive and good value at 20 bucks! Now on to the food! The sausage was good but was not really spicy as advertised. I got the marbled brisket as well which is the only thing that stops this from getting a fourth star. I found it dry. Marbled Brisket should be moist and melt in your mouth. However the star of the show are the ribs. Those are the best in town. In my opinion. Perfectly seasoned and smoked. The plate was so massive I had leftovers! I had been to Gatin's BBQ many years ago when they were at their old location. O, how far they've come. The old spot was no frills and really small. They've stepped things up with a much larger restaurant that's a lot nicer. I stopped by with my coworker for lunch on a Wednesday around noon. There was a line inside that took about 15 minutes to get through. It was one of those artificial lines, though. There was plenty of seating in the restaurant but they only had one person working the cash register. Rather than a traditional meat plate, I went with a dish that I had read an article about in a magazine: their fried bologna sammich. If hearing bologna makes you think of the deli meat you had when you were a kid, this is different. It's thick-cut bologna that smoked in-house along with smoked mayo, pickles, onions, and a side of kettle chips. I also got a side of creamed corn. They have a buzzer system to pick up your food when it's ready. The creamed corn was pretty good. Not quite Killen's quality but up there. The sandwich also hit the spot. I asked for it with no onions and they ended up still putting onions on. Luckily, they were the thick-cut kind so they were easy to take off. An interesting, unique dish and a generous portion. So, as I am standing inline to order, a worker asked me to put my water bottle out in the car and there is no sign, but togo orders will sit at the big tables of 8 that have a sign that states dine in seating only! Ummmm, I am going to need your establishment to treat everyone fairly and equally. I was one person with a water bottle (Texas summers at 5 is hot!!!) at least 3 people sat at the table. You just walked past a person at the table to come talk to me about something that wasn't stated in writting. We got our food and sure the place is empty and the man comes over and ask for my tray. Can you see that my food is still on it? I just freaking got it. Instead of bother me by asking for my tray, bring me a fork and knife and then i can give you my tray. Ok, I had their 2 step (brisket and spicy sausage with double mac and cheese). The mac and cheese is good! Really good. I think the sausage has a really good spice to it and the flavor is just ok. This was my first experience with Texas BBQ and it was pretty darn delicious!! I came with two friends and ordered the chopped beef brisket sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese. The chopped brisket was DELICIOUS, I could really taste the charred edges of the brisket while still remaining really tender and moist. I could've picked between sliced and chopped brisket but I'm honestly glad I picked chopped, because it made each mouthful easy to bite off. I was also a fan of the spicy BBQ sauce! It paired perfectly with my meat. I also drizzled some on my Mac and cheese, it added a nice fire that was neutralized by the cheese. Yum yum!! The workers here were so attentive and friendly, it honestly put me in such a good mood! One lady came by and offered to refill our water and clean up our trash while we were still sitting at the table and conversing. She was super polite and so so kind. Hot damn, I love Gatlins! The best dine-in experience I've had in a while, and Gatlin's did it effortless. We stopped in on Monday afternoon for my birthday after discovering this gem on High on The Hog -- a series featured on Netflix. Best decision ever. The line was short enough, about ~5 people ahead of us at lunchtime. The decor was so inviting, I didn't mind at all. When we did make it to the counter, we were greeted by the cashier's smile and grace. We ordered the Spicy Link Sandwich, Dirty Rice, Beef BBQ Potato, and Yams. I recommend everything we had and I'll be back to try to rest of the menu. We couldn't leave without congratulating the owner on the restaurant's visibility from the show. Meh. Not going to return to a BBQ joint whose best tasting food was the collard greens and fried okra. The sausage was nothing special, the ribs were fall off the bone but tasteless, and if you have to add sauce the brisket is a failure. We asked for fatty and lean. Got two skinny slices of dried out fatty and the lean was really dry, tough and the ring had absolutely no taste. Luckily the sauce was decent and I NEVER eat BBQ sauce because hopefully the meat has taste on its own. The Mac and cheese was runny as well. No bread, no pickles, no onions. What? All in all...yuch. Of all the joints I've eaten BBQ at, 100s, including nearly all on the Texas Monthly top 50, they would be beyond last. It's all about the links. Been to the old location once and loved the links so had to try them at the new location. The new spot is bigger and very quaint. Went in a little after 5p on a Wednesday (they close between 3p-5p daily) and they were just getting started. Order: spicy links, Mac and cheese, cream of corn The links were delicious. A hint of spice but not overdone. The portion size was enough to fill me up and take a little home. The top layer of the Mac and cheese was delish, the bottom half was mushy. Not too cheesy which worked for me. The cream of corn - I love cream of corn. The end. The set up of the place is people friendly. At one end of the counter by the drinks dispensing machine is a sectioned container filled w/pickle slices, jalapenos, onions, etc. Help yourself. Also if you want bread, there is a container and you just ask the workers for it. There is another little stand thst houses the silverware, BBQ sauce, straws, etc. The restaurant actually opens up bigger to another side if needed. I am a long time subscriber to Yelp. I come for all of my recommendations but shamefully I never write reviews, however the customer service at this restaurant is so bad, it would be a disservice to everyone if I did not write a review. We came across town to support a black own business and not once did anyone of the staff members even smile. Their their women's answers were short and not helpful at recommending sides when half of the sides menu was not available. The older man behind the counter placed his hands inside of the styrofoam to go containers without any gloves on when asked for a to go box and when we were attempting to exit the building, he watched us struggle with the door before waiting for us to ask for help and then he just pointed to the other door without saying a word. The customer service was so poor that it was not even possible to enjoy our food. I hope that management sees this and changes the attitudes that represent this restaurant. read more

Food was amazing! Went for breakfast, grits were my favorite, very buttery and good. The pancake was also delicious, fluffy and soft. Service was average. The cashier was nice , but it took almost an hr to get our food which for breakfast was pretty long as we got there very early. I am a BBQ purist: first brisket, then ribs, then whatever else. If you cover any of it in sauce, you are probably trying to hide some deficiency. I hate that I am writing this review late, however, it does not take away from the business. I really enjoyed my food and the staff was very friendly. I had the two meat plate with 2 sides which consisted of their Baby Back Ribs, Sliced Brisket, Mac and cheese and baked beans. I also had white bread with a small bag of onions and jalapeños. I will say that getting a one meat plate would have been the smarter choice because the portion size was pretty big. I enjoyed the flavor of the brisket it was not too dry and the ribs were tender. I also enjoyed the mac and cheese because it wasn't traditional, the pasta was different and the sauce had a good seasoning too. The beans were pretty standard so they are nothing to go on about. I did enjoy the flavor of the sauce. The only complaint I have is they did not have all the sides available at the time when I went. I wish I could have tried the creamed corn. I probably would have liked it more than the beans. I will definitely be back when I am craving some BBQ. read more

Had this place one time at a birthday party and had been craving it ever since. I drove 20 minutes to wait in line for 15 minutes with it never moving because they said it would be a 5 minute wait. Still not taking in orders for those who walked with the line out the door, they kept on taking phone orders. Where do I even start. It was an all around bad experience. Beware. First waited 20 minutes just to order with 8 people in line in front of us. The greens were bitter. The best part of our meal that we paid $60+ for two sadly was a slice of bread. I am at a loss for how anyone could think this is quality. Sooooo Keto starts tomorrow. Today is NOT totally Keto- but could be at Gatlins. They started daily breakfast service this week and I had to give it a try. I devoured the breakfast taco- and now am working on a sampling of some of the other dishes- chicken and biscuit, full breakfast and pancakes. It's all so so so very good!
