Gelson's is phenomenal. On my way from San Diego to San Jose our bus broke down and was stuck in their parking lot. While we were going in and out to use the restroom and buy snacks and drinks they came outside and provided two cases of water to make us more comfortable. That's going above and beyond! Went here for the first time to grab a fresh fruit platter for a Super Bowl party I was attending and boy was I shocked at the $40 price. Granted, it had very fresh berries, mango and melon and was really yummy but the price was quite steep. As I checked out other items on the shelves, some prices seemed ok but some seemed on the high side to me. I think that the prices are a little higher overall but you get good quality. Appears that this store is really for high-end quality specialty items, hot foods and prepared foods. I would not go here looking for plastic wrap, paper plates and zip-lock bags. However, if you want the most-impressive and tasty fresh fruit platter ever, this is your place. read more

Every part of this store is 5 star! You need help they are there to help you. Their pharmacy is the best in town Brian and his staff go out if their way to help call your doctors office no problem. This is hands down my new "go to" grocery store. I am new to this area and I have been nothing but impressed with this store. It is always so clean, well stocked and they have everything I need. Always someone to help me if I can't find something. Another huge bonus, they always have enough cashiers, and if there is a long line, they immediately open up another line. This is a big deal!! I really enjoy shopping at Gelson's. It's clean and uncluttered. There are seldom lines, the checker empties your cart, and they rarely charge for an extra bag if I haven't brought enough. Some of my old Albertson's people work there, too. I love the deli, especially the poached salmon. It is expensive (but less than Whole Foods) but everything is so fresh, unlike Von's. The produce is beautifully presented and fresh. The person who got bad mushrooms should have taken them back as they're good about refunds. There are items they don't have and certain items are so much more than Von's (like paper goods) but for produce, deli, and meats, it can't be beat. read more

We rarely go to this grocery store due to how overpriced they sell some of their items for, but today we decided to stop by because we were shopping at a nearby store. I was shocked at the poor customer service. While looking for help, we see this worker and she makes eye contact with us, and then starts laughing and talking to a customer. They were talking about their "future vacation," so you could tell they were obviously friends. While trying to get her attention again, she ignores us to talk to her friend. Later on while we were trying to checkout, the same woman was at a cash register and as we approach her, she looks at us, and then speed walks away as fast as someone can walk without looking weird. The bag boy at another register obviously noticed this, and he booked it over to talk to us, obviously embarrassed. For an establishment this overpriced, you should at least have good customer service! read more

good start to a new market in town and yes a little pricy but I see some of the familiar faces from the last two tenants at that spot. not sure we are going to switch from our other two favorites but they should do OK in the long run. Wine section is confusing, kind of strange to have the cheese and packaged deli section in the middle of the store and the fresh deli in the back. expect some changes as the dust settles. read more

We went to Gelson's yesterday - just to look. We were very impressed with the quality. The prices are not out of line. Some items were less expensive than elsewhere. We wound up buying a number of items and tasting a lot of the offerings. We will definitely frequent the Carlsbad location when it opens next month. I like the store and the staff are friendly. Unfortunately prices are ridiculously high. I picked up a few items and was shocked at the total price. Wholefoods is approx half price for the same amount of shopping. There is no way I can justify shopping here weekly. I'll come back when I have more money than sense, or when the prices are lowered for close out sale. read more

Lovin' Gelson's! The employees are incredibly helpful & friendly. Even though the store is pricey, everything I have bought is high quality. So glad to have another option for groceries. The pricing here is actually worse than 'Whole Paycheck' ( whole foods across the street)..I did the stupid thing at not pay attention to pricing when buying some fruit... $10 dollars for one already packaged bag of green grapes..keep in mind...this was not a large bag and not organic ! We used to go to Sprout's and Whole Foods but Gelson's changed all that. The positives: a) the staff are extremely friendly and helpful and it is clear that customer service is heavily emphasized in this supermarket chain. You never have to wait in line and they even unload your cart for you. b) the shopping experience is actually pleasant and fun. The aisles are wide and you are not constantly bumping carts with other shoppers. c) the seafood and meat section are outstanding. u can really taste the difference. and they have so many great, already prepared seafood items (seaweed salad which unlike most places is fresh and no MSG, tuna tartar, lobster salad, best smoked salmon ....). and they have their own brand of chicken that is organic. d) their deli is unbeatable. their carving section with prime rib, turkey, .... is unbeatable. they have their own brand of cheese too. smoked gouda is specially good. e) their bakery and fresh bread are on par to best bakeries. f) the produce section has a great variety of items, including extensive organic section. and the quality of the produce is much better than all other supermarkets. everything is so fresh. You really get what you pay for. If you want cheap and low quality items, go elsewhere. But if you care about what u put in your body and want high quality items, this is the place to be. And with so many high quality and tasty prepared food items, they make eating at home a lot easier. Unlike Whole Foods, which claim to be organic but most items are not, this place clearly labels what is and is not organic. And the deli section/seafood/meat sections are much better than Whole Foods. And for many items, their prices are actually cheaper than comparable stores like Jimbo's or Whole Foods or even Sprouts. For example the regular price for fresh, refrigerated Almond Milk is cheaper than sale price at Sprouts. read more

Sterile environment, very expensive and so empty when I have been there. It totally changed the value if having Whole Foods across the street. It is a shame because I used to shop at the Century City location in LA which was bustling and full of life with prepared foods that did not seem overpriced for what they were. read more

I had never been to a Gelson's until a month ago when I went into the Del Mar store. It's beautiful! It's really clean and there is a lot of natural light. The aisles are really wide, so it's easy to navigate the store and browse the shelves without bumping into other customers. There are a lot of neat products that you can't find in other stores. The pharmacy area is really nice with good products, and it's pretty and clean, not like most pharmacy areas in other stores that are kind of dingy. I got some soup at the soup bar. Excellent! Potato Leek, which was really good because it was made with a chicken stock. Something about the acoustics make it quieter than most noisy grocery stores, so it's fun to shop here. The only suggestion I have is to put some tables outside on the covered patio area. It would be fun to have coffee or eat outside there. They do have an inside dining area that's kind of cute, but at the time I went there, they had several TV's on at once, all on different channels! There was only one other guy sitting there, and he wasn't watching any of the TV's, so not sure why the need for several TV's to be going! No one was watching any of them. It was too much, so I didn't stay there to eat, even though I wanted to. I wanted to turn the TV's off but didn't know how. Are there remotes that the customers can use? Other than that, I love this store. My cashiers were nice. read more

I used to go to the predecessors of Gelsons called Albertsons who were great. Haagen's then took over but I switched to Ralphs because of MUCH better prices. Gelsons is basically a rip off. For example on a single packet of one brand of turkey bacon Gelsons were $2 more than Ralphs. Also whereas in Ralphs you get 30% off on 6 or more bottles of wine, Gelsons only offer 10%. That is a very significant difference .The reason for my review is that I had a bad fall there recently because they were repairing the floor between the pharmaceutical aisles and it was a reasonably large area but all they had was one small yellow cone in the middle of the floor but had not roped it off around the whole area. I went down pretty hard to such an extent that my knee cracked and the fall cut straight through my Rock Republic designer denim jeans and ripped the knee area open. I also hurt & grazed my ankle but my knee was much worse. They were extremely insensitive and offered me a band aid from the pharmacist who was so offensive and made out it was nothing.They did not offer me an antiseptic wipe to clean my wound. They did not even offer me to sit down but could clearly see I was in a state of shock over the fall. The manager came and offered his apology but beyond that did nothing except to get a member of staff to then close off this particular aisle. This is the worst supermarket I have EVER been into and consequently I have spread the word to my friends about the awful way I was treated by them. read more

This company apparently thinks that just because they have located a store in a wealthy neighborhood, they have the right to overcharge the people in that area two to three times the average price for the same item that a nearby store charges. The help is rude and pretentious, some of the items are not even of as high of quality as other stores, I was hoping a nice, friendly store would take the place of Haggens, this Gelsons is a complete disappointment! read more

The Gelson's on Via De La Valle is like the Norstroms of grocery stores - unbelievable service, such nice people that work there, easy in, easy out. Parking is plentiful. Can be a bit more expensive than some markets but they have a great selection of foods and their take out foods are fantastic!! read more

This is a very upscale market and has a great produce section, deli and good meat and seafood. However....it's SO expensive. Whole Foods is a competitor as is Seaside Market in Cardiff. IMHO, Seaside is hands down the winner. Friendly, local peeps working there and it's a truly amazing market. It's not cheap either, but the quality of everything is first rate and you get service with a smile every time. Been shopping there for over 25 years and it's still the best market around. read more

Overall Gelson's is an improvement over Haggen but their prices are sufficiantly higher than Von's to cause me to drive the extra half mile to shop. When Haggen opened I took my grocery list of about 20 items I normally buy to both Haggen and Vons. Haggen was 46% higher and I predicted they would fail in this market if they didn't become more competitive on price. Today, on Gelson's opening day, I took my basic shopping list to both Gelsen's and Vons; Gelsen's was 36% higher. I like the prepared food at Gelsen's but I will continue to shop at Vons until Gelsen's adjusts their prices to the local market. Grocery chains from out of the area don't appreciate how price-sensitive our local shoppers are despite the affluent demographics. To be fair, I will monitor Gelsen's prices since they have not had time to adjust to this market. If prices improve and or Gelsen's does more to differentiate their products, I will update my review. read more
