First time stopping into Gem in like 20 years. Due to the pandemic, like many others I've become a BBQ hobbyist. Wanted to try to smoke a pork shoulder on my new Weber Master Touch Kettle grill. Stopped by Gem, guy at the counter knew exactly what I needed, cut me a 6lb, bone in pork shoulder. $2.98 a lb!!! I could not believe it. Smoked that bad boy low and slow for 8 hours with a few chunks of oak. It was the best thing I've ever cooked! Pulled pork sandwiches for three straight days. Family raved. Good BBQ starts with quality meat and I'm convinced that pork I got from Gem was top notch. The place is super clean and it appears that they have every cut you can imagine. Will definitely be back. To all the comments about masks not being worn... this is correct. But everything is very fine and best possible items for your meat-centric meal. The meats are the star and are better than any "prime" elsewhere. We also buy our mushrooms, onions, etc here. We started to get potatoes for baking, but wait: in the refrigerated section, they have a loaded "Buster" potato. No need to buy and waste sour cream, chives and tiny amounts of bacon. I am a 26 year old female who recently broke up with my boyfriend and was forced to learn how to grill for myself (as he fed me a lot of red meat and I ended up really liking it). Anyways, as a new griller I have been purchasing my meat from the grocery store but kept finding that it was always a little tough. I remembered Gem meats because my Grandma used to always go there so I stopped by and picked up a couple New York steaks. I was hoping I would not notice a difference because grocery store meat is friendly on the budget but immediately when I unwrapped them the coloring and texture was different and appeared SO FRESH. I seasoned with a little garlic, salt and peppa and grilled medium rare. My jaw dropped with my first bite. This is the best steak I have ever had and I owe it all to Gem meats (and the fact that I grilled it with love). HEART MAY BE BROKEN BUT MY STOMACH IS FULL! read more

This place is without a doubt a hit... came in Wednesday afternoon to pick up some Paradise Chicken for Lunch and Meatloaf for dinner... Decided on 6 pieces and two of the Baked Potatoes for a group of 4 for lunch... first time trying the chicken.... BIG MISTAKE on only getting 6.... Jumped in the shop truck and went back and got 12 more... Not sure what they put into the breading???? But whatever it is....... AMAZING!!! Brought the meatloaf home.... As I got the 3lb Special.... I am married to a meaty kind of guy. And I mean that in the nicest, but most literal way. I say "Rib Eye", he says "Where?" as the veins enlarge on his forehead. I say " Prime Rib", he says nothing. Veins popping, mouth starting to slobber, he swerves out of the middle lane, slams on the brakes, and demands I let GPS take over. This time it lead us to the Gem's parking lot. I wonder, if a study was done, would we find Yelp to be a major contributor to the insane driving habits in America? He probably needs counseling for that driving thing, I don't appreciate almost meeting my maker over a piece of meat, but I have to admit the ensuing trek was well worth it. We came home that day with an armload of beautifully marbled, prime meats. And my human carnivore was temporarily satisfied, until Thanksgiving rolled around. The week before Thanksgiving, he announced he was not "doing" turkey. And...he had THE recipe. So, we drove to Gem's and invested in a 3-bone prime rib roast that was bigger than my dog. He lovingly aged it, prepared his own rub, then roasted it with such finesse and flair, the final consensus of the family was, this was possibly the best prime rib they ever tasted. This may have finally gotten me off the hook for not taking him to House of Prime Rib in San Francisco 40 years ago. Most certainly, it started with the best of meat and a great recipe. But, I have to admit, I have one helluva catch for a husband, too. So, Gem, you have definitely gotten our approval. We now have to label the Gem steaks in the freezer with a skull and crossbones, so our adult children do not "mistakenly poach" one while searching for something else. We have a well stocked freezer. My family and I love this place! We are working our way through their amazing selections and everything has been delicious. From the fresh meat (meatloaf, carne asada, tri tip), chicken (paradise, sweet and sour, crazy), prepared meals (mash potatoes and meatballs are a huge hit in our home), to the fresh bread, salsa, and fresh squeezed orange juice. We try to make it 2x a week. I read some of the comments about masking. I mask everywhere I go and the people at Gem (customers and employees) have always been kind and respectful.
