Who needs to go to Chinatown for dimsum when you have Gen Hoe conveniently located in Geneva! Honestly, the dimsum at Gen Hoe is some of the best that I have had in a while. I went there the other week with my sister and ordered shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, shrimp fun roll, shrimp toast, and some kind of fried taro thing. The dimsum is surprisingly fresh and the fried foods are not super oily like in Chinatown. This place is convenient for me to get to also--approx 15-20 mins--instead of the lonnnggggg 45-50 mins it takes for me to get to Chinatown. The service is superb--the lady who owns the place will personally stop by your table and say hi. She is SO nice...I kind of want to take her home with me! The only con is that they don't have those rolling carts with all the dimsum. You actually have to order from a paper menu with pictures of all the dimsum they have. Also, the dimsum takes a little long to prepare so expect to wait a little while before you get it. Otherwise, I def recommend this place :) Yum yum in my tum tum...haha that was lame. read more

Spice factor four! Gen Hoe is NOT AFRAID OF ADDING SPICE, yeah buddy! Fantastic food, huge portions, and the staff has "aunties" who will hassle you and make fun of you while you eat. It's like being home - antique-style furniture that you're terrified of ruining with sauce drips, excellent spicy flavors that burn you for minutes after each bite, and a serving of guilt on the side. Fabulous as usual! Service great, reminds me of when I was little, the waiters dress in more of a fotmal uniform. The place isnt the prettiest, needs some updating, but the rest is authentic chinese, with dim sum on the menu as well. We love this place. Forever this is the best food in town and the staff and owner is great. Today my husband and I were at lunch and a freak snaffo happened and the ventilation kind of blew up. 1st time at Gen Hoe. Went for lunch during the week. Not busy. Got seated right away. Ordered Mongolian Beef and for me personally it was too much veggies and not enough beef but still very good. This is my boyfriend's favorite place and I love it as well, only having been here twice. We start with the dinner combination platter. Had the peppercorn steak entree and the appetizer of fried won ton dumplings. The flavor of the fried food is so light and crisp, we love it. The peppercorn steak and sauce had so much flavor, my mouth is watering just thinking about it! Their alcoholic beverages are GENEROUS portions. I swear I had only one mai tai at each of my visits and they both were strong and delicious. Normally it takes me a few drinks to feel anything, here I only needed 1... The only negatives are the service sometimes is lacking in the slightest, the servers disappear from time to time but we still had *good* service. Place is a little dusty but that's an easy fix. Vegetable fried rice lacked vegetables, orange chicken wasn't spicy and had way too much breading. Server picked up our bill and credit card, 10 minutes later came back and asked if we were ready to pay. It is one of the better Chinese restaurants in the burbs. The interior has been upgraded now. Food is the same. Dim Sum is not like CAI or MingHin in Chicago but it as about as good as you will get. read more

Picked up food two weeks ago..sweet and sour chicken..it was packed SO tight in the disposable container..the breaded was falling off the meat and there was no sauce for the rice..it tasted like a bunch of mushy breading with chicken..we noticed our last order was not good either so it a no go on Gen Hoe for us.. read more

My boyfriends parents live in Geneva, and we make sure to visit this restaurant every time we come out at least once. The menu selection is widely varied and offers many options and price ranges. They offer traditional dishes as well as some modern dishes. Many of the staff travels in from China town on the train to work here, so you know they are making dishes the way they are suppose to be made with fresh traditional ingredients. I ordered the Kung Po Chicken and asked for it to be spicy but not over powering. I got just that! It was awesome! My boyfriends mother ordered the Lemon Zest Chicken. I asked to try a bite and you could taste the Lemon and even though it was breaded and deep fried, it was battered in a tempura style batter with a bit of a sweet taste not the usual deep fried taste. Given how Gilberts Kitchen has taken a nose dive, I've been on a quest to find good alternative Chinese food. Granted given all the years of going to Gilberts has made me somewhat of a snob but I have to tell you that Gen Hoe is quite impressive. We went there for lunch and I brought some hungry people and we ordered the Peking duck, Hong Kong Walnut Shrimp, Mongolian Beef and all items where exceptional. The look and feel of this place is classy prices are reasonable given the quality and the service was excellent. The owners and managers were very engaged with us and you could tell as they walked the floor that there were a lot of local long time loyal customers who they really had a long standing good relationship. The take out line was pretty active too which is a good indicator that the folks in Geneva really like this place too for both dine in and carry out. Will definitely be returning. read more

This was not good at all! I had always heard great comments for this place over the years. The people at the front were very nice. We only had to wait 5 minutes to be seated even though we did not have reservations. We sat at our table and ordered 2 ginger ales to drink. The waiter came back with seltzer water! We asked for new drinks and they were better but not really ginger ale. The waiter came back and started to take our order. We ordered an appetizer and I started to say my entree. The waiter said "ok" and walked away. My husband didn't even give his order. About 20 minutes later the egg rolls (appetizer) came out. We said we would like to finish our dinner order. The waiter said "you just wanted appetizer " we said no and repeated what we BOTH wanted for dinner. About another 30 minutes later, we received our entrees. They did not taste too good. We are some and left. Overnight, I spent most of it laying on the bathroom floor in between vomiting sessions. I will NEVER go here again! I was rather hesitant to try this place out because of all the low ratings due to bland food. I'm glad I took a chance! The egg rolls were absolutely delicious. The hubs had pork fried rice, which was absolutely flavorful and tasty. I had the orange beef. The beef was a tad bit salty, but I still really enjoyed it. I've lived in St. Charles for 12 years and until the past 4 years, was a loyal patron on Gen Hoe. I couldn't quite remember the reason I sought out other Chinese places, so I decided to place an order for my family last night and the memory flood gates quickly opened. I placed a pick up order for Sweet and Sour Chicken and Hong Sue Chicken. Both of these dishes contain fried chicken. I only live five minutes from the restaurant and arrived right on time to pick up my order. When I came home, I discovered that the fried chicken was packed in the container with the sauce. So guess what happened? All of the breading on the chicken soaked up the sauce - leaving the dish a muddy, slopping, unappetizing mess. Really? What happened to common sense? If someone orders a dish with breaded fried chicken, doesn't it make sense to package this in a different container so the meat stays fresh? Why would I ever order from Gen Hoe again when there are other Chinese places that understand this concept and the quality of food? Maybe if you dine in, thing are different. My advice, maybe you have to tell the order takers how to package your meal in advance? Or just order the egg rolls, at least you won't be disappointed. read more

Do not waste your money. General Tso Chicken had no flavor. Chow Mein Chefs Special had no flavor either and noodles were very hard! The shrimp fried rice tasted good at first but then noticed a burnt flavor in it and couldn't keep eating it. First time buying and very disappointed plus very pricey. read more

I have been going there since I was a child, I am 50 now and I still have not found a Chinese restaurant that comes close. the sweet and sour chicken is unbelievable, followed by the shrimp and lobster sauce-delectable.. great egg rolls, great won ton soup etcetera etcetera etcetera ..... go for lunch. the lunch prices are great and the portions are huge. we buy a few different things and pass em all around. I have never written a review before, but after reading some of these I felt I needed to! I took my mom here on Mother's Day (2015) in hopes to find us a great Chinese restaurant to frequent since the one (Lang Lee's in Orland Park) I went to growing up, had closed a long time ago. Amazing! I can't say it enough. We started with egg rolls, BBQ gee gee beef, and potstickers. The egg rolls are the best I've ever had in my life! Worth every penny! My mom said the beef sticks were even better than the ones we used to get elsewhere. The potstickers were also delicious, although they did not come with a traditional dipping sauce. We also ordered egg drop soup, sweet and sour chicken, and beef chop suey. The egg drop soup was the only thing I didn't enjoy, I thought it was kind of thick and slimey, but my mom enjoyed it, saying it was better than anything she's had recently. The sweet and sour chicken was out of this world. The chicken was not nuggets but more like huge tenders and it actually came with the vegetables unlike all those strip mall take out places! So thumbs up from me My mom had the chop suey and said it was just like she remembered it and the beef was so tender. I tried a little bit and it tasted like what she used to make growing up so definitely awesome to me!!! As for the service, they were incredibly nice, it was VERY busy so we had to wait a bit for our entrees, but we were in and out in an hour and ten minutes. Anyone who doesn't think they are nice there, has never been to a traditional Chinese restaurant. It was exactly as we expected, in fact, far exceeded our expectations and we will definitely be back! Grew up a few miles away and have travelled the world since. Haven't found better cantonese fare anywhere. Egg rolls are huge and incredibly flavorful. Mongolian Beef and Kung Pao Beef have very nice spice leves, not the blandness you find in many other places. The quality of the meat cuts is always outstanding. read more

We had a party of 7 with two children. Parking was difficult to find. We were seated in the back room, which makes sense. The food was fine, somewhat bland, but service was bad. The server only rarely passed by us. One of the kids ordered soup; it didn't come out with the other soup, nor with the meals an hour and a half later. The server had forgotten it and had to reminded. My entree was also ordered incorrectly and had to be remade. Over the years I have been here a few times because the food was good though the service is horrible. The waiters are rude and that's kind. The dishes are large so my husband and I split an entree and then order an extra soup and egg roll. This seems to tick the waiters off because they slam the food down on the table to indicate their displeasure. We went back on Sunday, same wait staff. Ordered the special after asking if the special was hot and if it was good. The answer--yes to spicy, never ate it to if it's good. Specifically asked if the chicken was fried and he said no, stir fry. Imagine our surprise when we were served a heaping plate of fried chicken! When I said to the waiter that he had said it was stir fried, he said "I said that?" and took it away mumbling under his breath. No apology, didn't say it was being remade or anything but he did eventually come back with a cold chicken dish. COLD! Never will go back there, ever. Nothing was exceptional except the price and the portions (which were the biggest "smalls" I have ever seen. The Soup was neither Hot nor Sour, just sort of bland. the Chicken was okay, but the sauce didn't know what it wanted to be. The best dish was the Spicy Pork and Noodles, more "Geneva Spicy" than real spicy. Q: Why has Gen Hoe been here for so long? A: Because the food is the best in the Fox Valley hands down. Yes, it's more expensive than other Chinese restaurants in the area but you get what you pay for...Quality. The Five Spice Chicken is fantastic as is the Ma La Double Delight and Sa Dae Chicken. The Hot & Sour Soup is the best I've ever had. The Peppercorn Shrimp is legendary and the stuff of late nite cravings. As for the decor: I love it. It's cool, retro and old school. Even the surly old waiters make this fun. (But it does figure that the people in this area are waaaay too uptight too enjoy this). Much better than the idiot teen servers at most suburban dining establishments. All you restaurants on Randall Rd, I'm talking to you! Bonus Points: Mrs. Lee the owner is the nicest, sweetest woman and always takes time to engage all her customers, just the way a business owner should. Heck we even had our daughters first birthday party here and after 12 years Mrs. Lee never fails to treat our daughter like a princess. I had ordered carry out on my lunch break and when I opened my rice there was some kind of dime sized roach sitting right on top. After calling the business and speaking to the manager they offered me more food, which obviously my appetite was long gone.
