Best egg rolls in the suburbs - huge menu lots of options haven't ever been disappointed

This place has really gone downhill chicken undercooked and both dishes were bland bland bland

So I was tinkering between a 3 and a 4....but just know that the food gets a 5!! For sure! Now the service on the other hand... We walk in and get seated right away which is a good thing especially since there was 5 of us, we usually have to wait. We then are sitting there for about 5-10 minutes before a server finally makes his way over to our table to take our order. The only one that ordered a drink was my friend who ordered a Diet Coke and it took about 5 minutes to actually get to the table. The appetizers came out fast, very fast actually. We ordered egg rolls and pot stickers. The egg rolls were FANTASTIC! Some of the best I've had and the pot stickers were good but they didn't come with the sauce to dip them in, so that was a bit of a downer. The rest of our food gets there about 20 minutes after our appetizers got there, which I felt was a bit long for a Chinese restaurant. We ordered the Khan's Mongolian Beef, Sesame Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken and Chicken Fried Rice. Everything was very high quality and delicious except for the rice. It was a bit bland and dry. Next time we will have to try the house special that Frank C. recommends in his review. After we were finished eating, the server came over and took our food to wrap up, but didn't leave the bill, so I had to ask one of the busboys to get his attention because he never came back to our table! So that was a little annoying. So overall, the food was GREAT and the service was touch and go. I mean the server was really nice but it seemed like he cared more about catering to the Asian and "older" customers instead of a table of 20 somethings. But I will definitely go back for the food, maybe next time I will get it to go instead, though. But it is worth trying for the flavor and quality of the food! read more

We enjoyed a Sunday afternoon meal here. Food was above average for most items. Service was O.K., after they attempted to get us to order drinks three times, by three different servers. A little overkill on this. They also have an annoying habit of snapping away dishes as soon as you near finishing the food on it. No need when there are empty tables in the dining room. The food was pretty good, and the portions were generous. Most dishes were in the $12 to $14 range. Egg rolls were very good. Tasty, interesting ingredients, and big. We had several chicken dishes, and the chicken was well prepared, tender, and flavorful. Some dishes had canned mushrooms, which disappointed me. I expect fresh mushrooms at this price level. Finally, the spicy squid is not recommended. The squid was breaded and fried, which was OK. The sauce had a decent flavor, with a moderate heat level. The deal breaker was the excessive amount of salt in this dish. The high sodium level overpowered any other flavors. This is a decent Chinese place for the area. read more

I've never wrote a negative review after eating in a restaurant. But after eating at Gen Hoe (literally 20 minutes ago from leaving the restaurant), I have to write a review to warn people away from this restaurant. It's honestly that bad. I will never eat at this restaurant again --even for free. Everything from the food to the service was unacceptable. Let's start with the food. I ordered (1) "fried won-ton dumplings" and (2) "mongolian beef". The fried won-ton dumplings are essentially fried chips. Surprisingly there was meat inside, but it was very small. If you are looking to eat fried wonton dumplings that have the meat wrapped inside lightly-fried dough, you won't find those at Gen Hoe. Instead you'll be served cheap fried chips with barely enough meat inside to justify the word 'dumpling'. They are practically scamming you. Second, I WASN'T EVEN SERVED MONGOLIAN BEEF! The menu described mongolian beef as tenderloin beef with onions. Instead, my dish came came with peppers and mushrooms (soo many red peppers..). Has anyone ever ate a mongolian beef dish that came with RED PEPPERS AND MUSHROOMS??? I should mention, nothing in the menu said my mongolian beef would include peppers and mushrooms. Yes, I double-checked the menu before I left the restaurant. Moreoever, there was almost no onions in the dish!! The onions included were green onions (not the circular onions). There was literally approximately six pieces of 1 cm by 1 cm green onions pieces in my dish --that's it. The "mongolian beef" wasn't even good. The beef had no flavor. There was clearly no MSG in the dish which is fine. But also, the beef wasn't marinated. Very bland dish. They did give you a big portion for approx. $13.25. But still, this restaurant is way overpriced for the quality food they serve. Dinner menu is listing entrees for 13 dollars and upward. The average price for an entree appears to be 15 dollars. An average approx. price of 15 dollars for a dinner entree is just too much. Gen Hoe is NOT a fancy, 4-5 star upscale restaurant. On to the service. Like other reviewers have stated, the owner and the server are just rude. It's a passive rudeness. It's like they look down on you. Like you bothered them by coming to the restaurant. The owner looked at me like I was crazy when I said "dinner for one". As for the waiter that served me, the waiter did seem to be a little nicer when I asked for chopsticks. Maybe the restaurant looks down on people they feel aren't authentically asian? Which is very strange because the food at Gen Hoe is extremely westernized. What decent chinese restaurant serves fried chips? I'd like to see Gen Hoe try to compete with any of the chinese restaurants in Chinatown. Even the worst Chinatown restaurant is miles above the quality and authenticity Gen Hoe advertises. And Gen Hoe does try to advertise their restaurant as serving you authentic cantonese food. They have very fancy menu's with a whole paragraph eulogizing the restaurant's goal of serving the customer authentic cantonese food. TLDR: Food is overpriced. Food is NOT authentic cantonese, but shamelessly western. Waiter and owner are likely to be rude to you. Food is cheap and you may be served the wrong dish. Eat a meal at Gen Hoe if you want to be cheated, treated like you're stupid, and treated rudely. read more

The worst experience I have literally ever had. The waiter said not ONE word to me, and only spoke to my significant other. When our food came we noticed our wantons had no filling, so we paid $5.00 for fried chip basically. We just moved to IL from MN in June and decided we would give it a try, but NEVER again will I eat at such a lazy and unorganized restaurant.NEVER GO TO GEN HOE , it even rhymes. read more

They must have changed chefs or something as the quality has really gone down hill over last six months or so. Hot n Sour soup used to be great and now just meh. Main dishes are now lightly sauced and lack much zip. I like this place, so I hope the quality of the food improves quickly. read more

This is the restaurant my family always got Chinese food from when I was growing up. We would get carryout a few times a year, and several times we went to the restaurant for their special Chinese New Year dinner thing, which I always looked forward to. We never once had a bad experience eating there, and the food has always been delicious. It had been quite a while since I had been there, but I went for lunch with a coworker recently and it was just as nice as I remembered. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that I could order bubble tea! Yum! It came in a disposable plastic cup which seemed kind of weird at first, but then it was easy to take it to go when I couldn't finish it, so I guess that was good. They have a big menu, so it's always hard to decide on something, but I've always really liked their vegetable fried rice! read more

Just finished a Father's Day dinner at Gen Hoe's. It was phenomenal!!!! Egg Rolls, Hong Kong style calamari, scallops tempura, pork fried rice and 5 Spice Shrimp. It was BETTER than ever. Wow!!' I have been eating here since the 70's, my entire family has been eating here that long and it is the best Chinese food in Illinois. It's better than most of the places I've eaten in San Francisco. Discount the lower ratings, they are missing the big point - the food, like someone trashing a product in the reviews on Amazon because Amazon took three days to deliver instead of two. read more

I went here on NYE with my family and I couldn't find a good thing to say about it. We couldn't understand the server because of how softly he spoke, the soda I ordered was basically seltzer water, the food had zero taste. I got the beef and broccoli which usually has oyster sauce on it but instead, it had this gross, sludgy grease on it. Nobody in my family enjoyed their food. we typically get gen hoe for take-out. we live very nearby so we decided to just eat there. we were sat right away. our server was attentive and polite. he was trying to push egg rolls, which i actually really dislike (china chef in westmont has the best egg rolls for sure!). our food was ready super fast. it was good; on par with every take-out experience. their food is way overpriced; over $50 for crab puffs, two entrees, and one drink. read more

The customer service is absolutely Horrible! I ordered a martini and it was served in a low ball glass. I asked to have it put in a cocktail glass and the server said they don't have those glasses. This is not a fancy restaurant he said. I look over and saw an older gentleman had one. So he lied right to my face and was very rude about it. Based on recommendations from a few people out here in Geneva, we tried this restaurant for the first time tonight. I can only say that obviously, these recommendations came from people who have never had good Chinese food. Perhaps I'm spoiled, as Chinatown in Chicago was just a short drive from my house growing up and we ate there frequently. That being said, I knew we were in trouble when I opened my moo sui pork and the permeating odor was GREEN PEPPER. That dish should NOT have green pepper in it, EVER! Also, there were no pancakes included with the carry out for the pork. Double whammy. My husband ordered the sweet and sour pork. It was soggy and under-cooked. The egg rolls were also soggy, and left a very "chemical" aftertaste in the mouth. The best thing I can say about the experience was that the fortune cookies were OK. I mean, you can't muck those up when they come pre-packaged, right? I would not eat here again, and if I ever have a taste for "good" Chinese food, I'll just drive to Chinatown. This was a total waste of 40.00, as we ended up throwing the whole dinner in the garbage and eating leftovers from last nights dinner. Skip this restaurant. You'll be sorry if you don't. read more

Having grown up in nearby St Charles, Gen Ho is the very first Chinese restaurant at which I ever ate. Since that first time I have eaten at many, many others including in Chinatown in Chicago and none have equalled the Ho. Yes the decor can seem dated, but the menus have miles of choices. Even my stepdaughter who can be very very very very very picky LOVES their chicken fried rice and chicken egg fu yung. Mrs Li, the owner often greets you at the front door or front counter where their takeout orders are picked up. On any given Friday the lobby is packed for takeout orders and dine in customers. All the staff speak Chinese as their native tongue and have thick accents, so be prepared. The portions are very generous, and whenever I have taken friends there they have loved it. If you like shrimp, try the Hong Kong shrimp; shrimp in a sweet white sauce with walnuts and lettuce. It makes my mouth just remembering the first bite every time. Pricing is reasonable, and while you might consider it a great place for a date you may also see people come in casually dressed. In any event bring your appetite-- you won't be sorry you did!! read more

This is one of the most sequential looking Chinese restaurants you will find. The place looks fabulous inside but the prices are high for everything and the food not that good for what you pay. They have a small banquet area and the mood is dark like old school Chinese restaurants. This is by far my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Chicagoland area. I get treated so well and am welcomed. I have the pleasure of great meals always, wonderful and flavorful. I come all the way from Chicago Chinatown. I take the metra train to come eat there it is worth the trip. Mrs Lee and her son Dr Peter Lee have shown me what it is to value there customers with a smile and friendly atmosphere. I enjoy sharing my time with friends and meals here. This restaurant works hard to please its customers, and I was very happy with my experience at Gen Hoe. Mrs Lee, the owner, and son greeted me at arrival, and I felt very welcome. The food was wonderful, the egg rolls and beef chow fun were my favorite. My son loved the bubble tea and a generous helping of fortune cookies. As a Geneva resident, I love supporting our neighborhood restaurant which has been there since 1969. I hope this review inspires others to return to Gen Hoe who may have not been there for awhile. Gen Ho does have THE BEST egg rolls I think I've had in my life. They're absolutely delicious. I'd recommend this place for take-out though because when I dined in I found my waiter to be really crabby and short with us. I actually work with one of the owner's daughters and she is as sweet as can be, but I can't say the same for their waiters. The food is delicious and definitely the best place in the STC/Geneva area for Chinese but the service is a little on the rude side. The portions are extremely generous and everything I've had there was delicious, fried rice of all types, pot stickers, Beef and Broccoli, Empress Chicken...the list goes on. Give it a shot if you're sick of the other take-out places in the area. read more

It's no China Town and sometimes I'm a little disappointed. They claim there is no MSG but I have to differ after being dehydrated the next day. It's been here for awhile and my family used to get take-out a lot from here as well as dine in too but there's just something missing. The service rocks and it's definitely a nicer environment than most Chinese restaurants and has a lot better presentation too. I just don't like the prices and the whole MSG thing. read more

First timer and order carry out. Potstickers, tomato beef pepper, and sesame chicken = $45. I thought that was expensive. Food was bland and watery. Potsticker sauce was meek and only enough to cover one potsticker. Hot chili sauce was less than 1/4 teaspoon. Vegetables were cut up in small pieces...prob done to fill up the container and trick the eyes into thinking there was more. Overall we will not be going back. Look at my eyes I have every right to be very critical in this type of restaurant. ;-) read more

We had a tradition growing up of going here on Mother's Day for lunch while I was a kid. Mother's Day 2016 we decided to have a throwback to this tradition we probably haven't done in the last 8 years. I always got the Gen-Hoe fried rice and egg roles. The tasted just like I remembered, which was very good. The only down side was the service which was extremely slow. We had 7 people and were in there for an hour and a half before we got up to find someone to get us our check. If they would fully staff the place, it's about as good as Chinese food gets for this area. read more
