There's a group of us from work who go out to lunch several times a year, and the retirees continue to join after they're done working. Today one of our group suggested Gen-Hoe after going there with his family. There were eight of us and everyone was pleased. We used to go to restaurants in Chinatown years ago, and it's been hit or miss in the suburbs, but everyone was happy with our food today. It's very hard to find fried scallops in the Midwest, and it's getting harder and harder to find spare ribs in Chinese restaurants, but Gen-Hoe hit a home run on both accounts. We've been here twice in the last couple of months. I'm not sure why it took so long to stop in, several friends have complimented their food. Gen Hoe has an enormous menu with every Chinese dish you could possibly imagine. We've tried several things in our two visits here and haven't found a thing that we didn't love. Second sit-down visit and we again started off with their delicious egg rolls (prefer their standard to their chicken filled). The pot stickers did not do it for me this time, didn't care for the pork and the two dipping sauces were a red vinegar and chili sauce, I prefer more of a ginger sauce. I think I'm just out on pot stickers in general. My wife ordered the veggie lo mein but the noodles were not what she expected, and perhaps that's because they gave her war mein instead, as indicated on the receipt. I ordered the sesame chicken which had good flavor, but as is typical, was over breaded. It also showed a picture of the sesame chicken plated with broccoli on their menu, however, it was not served with broccoli, just some green peppers & onions (both of which I detest). Their menu is pretty extensive though so I'll go back again to try another dish or two to pair with the egg rolls. 3 of us but speaking for my meal. Split egg roll appetizer (2), it was ok. It must have been pre-cooked because it came out fast and just barely warm. I ordered and decided to try for 1st time the lemon chicken. It was a Hugh platter of chicken, which I believe was again pre-cooked because it was not even warm. It was very crunchy and tough. It was covered in a thick not too flavorful lemon sauce. I don't know why I took it home. I will not, nor will anyone else in my family eat it. What a waste. I won't order that again. I think the food was good takeout. We ordered a bunch of different items. However, I had a 30 minute drive home and the crab rangoon and sweet-and-sour chicken were super soggy. It was way too much sauce. I recommend putting the sauce on the side for sweet-and-sour chicken and order crab rangoon when you are dining in. The other non-fried items were good. This is the fifth time in a row that I have not received the amount of eggrolls that I was supposed to get.. today they told me "well, we didn't charge you, so we're good". But we're not good.. First of all, I'm not a big fan of the stuff Chinese restaurants serve Americans, so take this review with a healthy shot of MSG. Gen-Hoe is classic Chinese takeaway. Service is good, drinks are fun, and the place is very clean and nice. My only wish is that there was some indication on the menu which dishes are really Chinese and which are just gloppy bits of veggies and noodles. I grew up in Geneva and this place is a Geneva staple. Everyone I talk to who lives here say it's the "only place" for Chinese food. I literally do not know how people like it? The fried rice was an odd grey color devoid of spices. The sweet and sour delight was mushy. The pot stickers are covered in a very think unappetizing noodle. The only thing that was good were the egg rolls. They were pretty good. And the price was high. Every 3-4 years I try it again hoping it will be better this time. It never is. Anyone not rating this place a 5 is ridiculous! Point of fact; they have the best egg rolls this side of Chicago. If you are into a little heat you must try them with the homemade hot mustard and sweet and sour. They make their sauces in house and it's noticeably better than other places that do not. I always see lots of cars parked here during dinner hours and I was curious. We've been here many years ago but did not really like it much. I was thinking maybe they've improved. So hubby and I decided to come here for lunch. Wrong decision. I ordered Szechuan Pork and it has very little pork lots of bell peppers. It leaves an after taste on my teeth, my guess is too much baking soda was used as tenderizer. It was also a tad bit salty for my taste. Hubby ordered Chicken Chow Mein. Very oily and salty. The waiter we had wasn't very attentive. It took as 20 min to get the check. The other waiters were good and always checking on their customers though. The ambience is nice though. This is my go to place for bbq steamed buns. My 9 year old son LOVES them. As I tried different things my favorite became the pan fried dumplings. They only make the buns on Sundays from 11:30 to 3:00. Keep that in mind. So far I haven't had anything that I wouldn't reorder. read more

This was the worst experience ever. I will not ever go here again. I went here with two friends because one of my friends lived in Batavia so we decided to go here. We absolutely will not go back. We were 3 black women. We were seated and never checked on. If I could give a 0 they would get that. We were never approached. We sat for 15-20 min and no one came to our table. Gen Hoe is a tri-cities institution! I've been coming here since I was a kid. Mrs. Lee (who is an icon) still asks about my family, remembers our orders, etc. The food is fresh, flavorful, and delicious. My husband routinely craves the lemon chicken, and I like their egg rolls, wonton soup, and beef chow fun (I actually order beef with chinese broccoli and add chow fun noodles, amazingly good). They did a phenomenal job during the shutdown with carryout service to your car. You have to love the staff who seem to have been there for decades, the retro decor, and stylized architecture. So cool! With Chinese American restaurants disappearing around the country in favor of trendy fusion style places, Gen Hoe is an absolute gem. read more

We were very excited to try this place after the good reviews. The Rangoon and potstickers were delicious, but the chow main we ordered same with the wrong noodles and was sitting in a pool of oil. The Kung pao was liquid and soggy meat. The orange chicken tastes boiled and was also sitting in a watered down, thin sauce with zero flavor. We thought perhaps the sauce would thicken the next day so we took it home. We will not be eating the leftovers as we have been sick ever since eating there and again after we tried the leftovers. Gen Hoe is a locally owned American style Chinese restaurant. From what I've read it's been under the same ownership for forty or fifty years. This is a big place with a dining room that's always full. The wait staff is grown adults, not the kids you see in so many suburban restaurants. Service here is very good. Egg rolls are excellent so is the wonton soup. The entrees that we had, Mongolian Beef and some shrimp thing, are pretty good too. All in all Gen Hoe is completely satisfactory. read more

Wow, what has happened at Gen Hoe? We've been going here most every Friday night for take out since we moved here a year ago. Lately we've been getting there only to wait (10 minutes tonight) with the ladies at the front desk stating mine was another order that was late. I always ask for extra sweet n sour sauce on my sweet n sour chicken. It's normally dry if you don't ask. Tonight, I again not only didn't get extra sauce, there were several pieces without any sauce on them at all. Basically chicken nuggets on those pieces. So disappointing. We live in the Milwaukee area, but whenever we're back in our old "stompin' grounds" of St. Charles and Geneva, we make a Gen Hoe stop a priority. We've been doing it for 40 years!!! I try to order things I've not tried before (like Egg Fu Yung or Mu Shu Pork) and this time it was Empress Fish (Sole). Excellent and a generous portion. My wife occasionally summons up the courage to try something different, but Chicken Fried Rice it was again. Enough for two and very good. The problem occasionally is a waiter who doesn't or doesn't want to understand English. We need to have ice for our ice chest to keep the left-overs fresh for the two hour trip home. When this happens and the waiter gets upset, just ask for the owner who is always kind and helpful. She insists on making it right. read more
