We live in the Milwaukee area, but whenever we're back in our old "stompin' grounds" of St. Charles and Geneva, we make a Gen Hoe stop a priority. We've been doing it for 40 years!!! I try to order things I've not tried before (like Egg Fu Yung or Mu Shu Pork) and this time it was Empress Fish (Sole). Excellent and a generous portion. My wife occasionally summons up the courage to try something different, but Chicken Fried Rice it was again. Enough for two and very good. The problem occasionally is a waiter who doesn't or doesn't want to understand English. We need to have ice for our ice chest to keep the left-overs fresh for the two hour trip home. When this happens and the waiter gets upset, just ask for the owner who is always kind and helpful. She insists on making it right. read more

Terrible service.I had to go find a bus boy to get my waiter after waiting for 30 min for someone just to take my drink order. It wasn't even busy. The bus/water boys were just standing around on their cell phones. Also, the food tasted off- the chicken chow mein had no flavor and the chicken was slimy and the general tso chicken had no sauce on it.. The eggrolls were about the only decent thing. Been going to Gen Hoe for years and I'm sad to say they are slipping. Service was horrendous. Waited a very long time after being seated to even get water let alone have someone take the order. We ordered hot tea that came after the meal and after reminding the waiter 3 times we wanted hot tea. Egg rolls that are an appetizer, were served with the meal and were extremely salty. Much more salt than any of the other times we have been there. Steak Kow also was extremely salty. Well I have been eating Gen Hoe for 30 years, since I was little. Growing up in the area this was the place to order from, crunchy egg rolls, fresh flavors, hot food. My sister and I decided to eat here yesterday with our daughters since I have been craving a good egg roll... I was disappointed.... our server didn't speak good English which isn't a problem he was nice. The restaurant wasn't crazy busy so we got plenty of attention until we wanted to pay our check and get to go boxes and he was MIA and no one else would help us they would walk by without even acknowledging us. So that was awkward saying excuse me to everyone and they all pretended they couldn't hear us.... Now let's get to the food. We ordered egg drop soup... less oily then most places.... Egg Rolls.... no crunch when I bit into it and the inside wasn't real warm which was disappointing.... Fried Rice with chicken... it was hot and fresh not much flavor good amount of egg which we love and the chicken was tender.... sesame chicken.... hot great flavor, tender, and came on a bed of some peppers and onions. Gen Hoe is a large Cantonese/Chinese restaurant with a limited number of vegetarian/vegan options. We got the vegetable potstickers to start ($6), which were great---nice rice dumpling and a savory filling. They went really well with the roasted red chili oil on the table (or ask for it). The Garden Fresh Oriental Vegetables ($10.75), however, was really bland, in a gloopy, flavorless white sauce. Avoid this dish. The Si See Tofu ($11.25) sounded interesting (deep fried tofu with baby corn and broccoli), but also had a bland, gloopy sauce. Also, there was almost no broccoli or baby corn; it seemed to mostly be bok choy or some other lame, watery vegetable. The String Beans with Garlic Sauce ($9.75) was better---crispy string beans with salt and pepper savory seasoning and diced onions and bell peppers. They don't have brown rice here, unfortunately. The service was friendly, if a bit shaky and erratic. The ambiance is suburban-nice (the type of place you'd take your parents to), but somewhat decayed, and the plates could have been cleaned more thoroughly. If you're looking for better Chinese food in the area, I suggest Chamber Red Bistro in St. Charles, 3 miles north or Wang's Garden in Aurora, about 6 miles south. read more

This place deserves zero stars. I called in an order for 1/2 Peking Duck. On THEIR website, the menu shows $13.95. I arrived about 2 minutes later and the older white lady couldn't be bothered to look up at me. She simply said hello and that was it. She is extremely cold, rude, and has zero hospitality, but I'm sure the staff already know that. 5 minutes later, they ask the name for the order and I tell them my name and they say, "That will be $27.80" and I proceeded to tell them their website says differently and they go "Oh it's wrong" with a smirk. Guess you're having duck for dinner then, Miss, because I'm not paying twice the price because you misadvertised the price. On top of that, it looks extremely dated, smells like a toilet and has stains all over the carpet. The staff have clearly given up, but that's a telling sign of the management. read more

I used to go here all the time in the late late 90's up to 2001, when I moved. Boy, has this place gone downhill. It used to be stellar. So, last week I had chicken chop suey and I asked will there be lots of veggies, because I love Chinese veggies. Which chicken dish has most veggies, I asked. Sure, he assured me--this one does. All there was were the general veggies that look like noodles - no BokChoy or baby corn, or carrots or bamboo shoots or water chestnuts, snow peas, or broccoli. Just the Chinese veggie noodle things and tons of prefabricated chicken (think rubbery fake chicken with no texture). Sauce was good, but chicken looked like cod. I left it all there, and my waiter did not even care to ask me if I liked it, when he took it away the plate, pretty much left untouched. My veggie egg roll had no recognisable veggie inside--just mush and a very hard fried shell. I ate about half of that. My lychee bubble drink was a good flavour, but why whipped cream on top, without asking? It's not a milkshake. And, the black tapioca balls were impossible to chew, so I just avoided them. I'd say you'd break a tooth trying to chew that tapioca. I'd say avoid this place. I mean, the portions are huge, and the drinks (we did not drink) are cheap, so maybe some people like that, but I need my Chinese to taste much better. read more

Favorite place to get Chinese food in the Tri-city area. Best egg rolls I can remember having. Usually get the sesame chicken and veggie fried rice, both good. While I can't speak for the service as I've never ate inside, their carry out system is nice; typically have workers come out to your car for payment and to bring your food. read more

Awful experience. My daughter and I stopped for dinner last night. Before we ordered I asked if what I was ordering could be made gluten free (shrimp Kow) Our server assured me that it would be. I also ordered a second dish to take home that I was assured was made gluten free. It wasn't. I became sick about 30 minutes after eating which is what happens if I eat gluten. It isn't some fad diet some people get very sick and it lasts a few days. Also the additional dish I brought home that I was assured was gluten free was covered in breading. If I'm going to order Chinese food, it's going to be good. There are so many mediocre takeout places in the Chicago suburbs, and with all the leftovers I will inevitably have, I'm going to make it count. This is my go to. They have the best egg rolls I've ever had. Hot and crispy on the outside. And it's not a mystery mix of randomness inside. You can clearly see the shrimp and veggies inside. I tried the combo platter. I got the two egg rolls, plus a fried shrimp, a chicken tender, two spareribs, and two beef skewers. I think I may get this every time. The ribs and beef were just amazing. I definitely recommend the Gen Hoe fried rice with shrimp beef and pork. I personally like to add a little moe soy sauce to it though. Beef and broccoli is a favorite of mine, and you will get big chunks of beef. The quality of the meat is actually given attention to, what a concept for a Chinese restaurant! The sesame chicken is quite good as well, and when I aksed for it to be a little spicy, they did it pretty well. They also add peppers and onions for a nice contrast. One of the only issues on my last order was some of the sesame chicken sauce leaked out through the container. Not good. All that food was $53, which isn't too bad, since it was enough for about six meals. And I'm especially glad they don't skimp on the fortune cookies! read more

Best egg roll I've ever had you've got to try them! Crispy outside with very flavorful filling and they do not skimp on the filling.. the egg roll is completely stuffed! Can't remember the name of the dish I ordered, but it had chicken and shrimp with veggies and peanuts. Extremely tasty with huge portions! Felt very full and didn't even finish half my meal. So my wife has grown up in Geneva and has been going to Gen Hoe for years, I have still never eaten inside the restaurant so I am basically reviewing the carry out option. My conclusion is,... Stupid Good. The steak dishes are very tender and substantial. They are obviously using quality cuts of meat and fresh veggies. We also love all the fried rices, they are all amazing.... Our fav's are the bbq pork, and the shrimp fried rice. Get in my belly little baby shrimps... Always more food then any person should eat, good service, great prices. My boyfriend and I have lived in Geneva for 3 years. We finally broke down and stopped in for dinner. Tom our waiter was the only reason we could laugh at our experience. The food was bland and had zero taste. We ordered the egg rolls they were just okay. Everything after that was awful. I ordered the orange chicken it had little taste. The portion looked large but majority of the food was ALL breading. Absolutely no chicken for veggies. My boyfriend ordered the generals chicken. Similar experience all breading no chicken. All you could taste was the filler. The beef fried rice was over cooked at tasted like the wok it was cooked in. The service was good and the waiter made us laugh. Thanks s used to be one of my favorite Asian restaurants in the valley. The one good things this place has is a great location. Other than that... service 1 star food 1 Star the condition of the men's room 1 Star. I question if the health department in Geneva is operational or not? I had shrimp and chicken dish. The shrimp was packaged (I'd bet) and the lack of veggies was suspicious. Mrs had sweet sour shrimp and chicken. The shrimp was so ever cooked it was inedible. Knowing that I love Chinese food my fiance's parents have raved about this place since the first day I spent out there. We finally gave it a try last Saturday and it did not disappoint! It's very unassuming from the outside, but when you enter you're stepping into a well adorned Chinese restaurant. Eddie was our server and he was one of the many highlights. He made sure we had a great meal and was very personable. The food was fresh, tasty, and came out really fast. It is some of the higher priced Chinese that I've seen, but you get huge portions. Ordered 3 dishes Sesame Chicken: This is the worst I've had in my lifetime. Sauce was completely soaked into breading so it was very mushy. Sauce was very basic/bland. Chicken was hard and overcooked. It tasted exactly like when you microwave leftover sesame chicken after it's been in the fridge for a few days. Beef Chow Fun: It actually had good flavor. Stir-fried well. Lots of beef and it was soft. The Chow fun itself was overcooked and mushy though. The whole dish had too much sauce, the dish should be relatively dry. Fish with Chinese Broccoli: This was a special on their FB page, I didnt see it on the menu but it's a dish I like and rarely find around here. Fish was prepared OK. Gen Hoe is a wonderful traditional Chinese restaurant. I feel as if I'm stepping back 40 years when I go in (which my husband and I love to do!) The egg rolls are phenomenal; I believe they have peanut butter in them, so if you have allergies start your order by telling your waiter. The garlic green beans could be a meal in themselves, but we order entrees and always take some home. It reheats well! The Gen Hoe Delight may be my favorite; I find that most restaurants show off their best offerings by putting their names on them. We came here for New Years's dinner. This is the place for genuine Chinese food. The egg rolls are how egg rolls are suppose to taste. Since New Years I have been back twice now for take out lunch and dinner. I have worked down the street from Gen Hoe since last April and never knew I had an outstanding resturant in walking distance from my job. Fantastic place, great good, great cocktials and great service. You will not be disappointed. read more
