The new and improved Genki Sushi Kapolei is the best one I've been to yet. There's a massive waiting area outside. There are so many places to sit and wait for your number to be called. Also the number is called on a speaker system so you'll be able to hear from a pretty far distance. I really liked the new train system they use to deliver the sushi. You don't have to press any button to return the train, it automatically does it once the plate is lifted. The wait wasn't long for dinner and the food came out quickly. I honestly really like this place and I go here quite often! I love the incorporation of the bullet train and how nice it is. They are really strict during covid which is nice, that's how all of Hawaii is, but sometimes it's sad because I miss being seated next to other family members. But between this location and another nearby sushi joint, this one could seat us sooner so we came in. First thing after being seated I see a family in a nearby booth with kids. Not a big deal, except their kids are seated next to the belt and they're messing with foods going along tables. GROSS! I guess it's nothing the workers can help but geez, keep an eye on it, talk to them or maybe ask that children with busy hands not sit by the belt... something! So I chose not to grab anything from the belt at all. Another thing that gets me is the prices. For two people eating a light lunch on a weekday still ran me about $40! There new location by marshals is so much better. It's bigger and now it features the train belts only. Meaning no more sushi circling on the belts for who knows how long. Everything is made to order via the tablets on your table. Then delivered fairly quickly via the the little train. Their prices did go up a bit, but I like the quality more than sushi bay. When I have my sushi fix, I always come to Genki Sushi. We came to the Kapolei one for the first time. Lots of parking. We went pretty late at around 8:45pm. Our wait time was about 10-15 minutes. The waiter and waitress was nice. Very spacious too. I was SO surprised to see for the first time, you go to Genki sushi without a conveyor belt. There's no sushi going around which totally made my experience boring. You pretty much just order on the ipad thing and the food is delivered on the train in front of you. I mean that's fine but I usually like to pick and look at some sushi going around. Their bathroom was pretty nasty and had paper towel in the sink and just not clean. Food was good though! Brand new and shiny! This location touts being the biggest in the state along with the only one serving a Tonkotsu Ramen. It's a fully automated location big enough to accommodate about 117 people. The staff was very helpful and we did not have to wait at all - it was a Saturday at 5pm. But I'm sure as soon as everyone hears about it's opening people will come far from and wide to at least try the new locale. I was most impressed at the ease and efficiency of the automated system. I'm hoping they can maintain the level of service in the coming days, months, and years. Update: Up until the very end, it was great. But, we're at the end of our meal, we ordered a chocolate mouse cake. Ten minutes later, it hadn't shown up. We called for service, the number popped up on their screen that we requested service. It got turned off without us getting any server to check on us. This happened three times. Finally, when the young man coming around to refill our tea showed up we informed him. To which, I watched them fumbled and talked, someone walked to the back came back out, pointed at out table. We waited a few more minutes until a server finally showed up to ask us what's wrong. More waiting till we finally got the chocolate mouse cake. I am truly UPSET about this. They easily had a dozen workers walking around, some looked like they weren't busy at all because they were looking around and laughing with other coworkers. This is my 2nd time here and from my first visit nothing has changed. The service here is absolutely awful. Its not very busy here so you would think that everything will run smoothly but its definitely the total opposite. Regardless of the new system they kept getting our orders wrong constantly and it was getting really annoying that they kept making things that we didnt order. The workers are rude for no reason even though we were trying to be nice. The first time I visited this location they literally skipped us and sat other ppl who were walking in after us. They never came around to refill waters so majority of the time i had to find a worker in order to get my water refilled. I have never ever been separated from my family and after a horribly emotional exhausting day of everything going wrong I was late to be able to sit down and eat with my family and the restaurant wouldn't let me sit down with them! They said I told your husband there was no add on's.... i'm pregnant a disabled veteran and i am still currently starving going to go support another local owned business. I waited while my family ate with our credit card and sat outside my husband said they had a entire booth and the kids sat on the side with him!!! They could have just checked my temperature and sat me with my family I would have waited instead of starving outside waiting patiently for my family to eat! For me, Genki is the go-to place when we can't wait to eat because the food is ready, you just have to hope and pray there's no line. As regulars there, we know when to go and when you definitely should not go. As a large restaurant food chain this Genki has the same look and menu as the others. For this specific location they really need to amp up the AC, it gets hot and has a mild odor at times. We typically dine there in the evening so it hasn't' been a problem but, I've noticed it when we would have lunch there. I highly recommend the seared garlic ahi, kalbi bowl w/ sauce on the rice, the crab stuffed mushrooms, and the unagi. They now offer a kids meal and any item can be substituted for a yellow or green plate all at a great price of $4.35. The reason for 3 stars is because the level of cleanliness (the floors, yikes), at times items on the belt are not fresh, and the consistency in customer service really depends on who you have. Seems to be a common thing on sone reviews. Coming in an hour before closing and service goes downhill. We decided to eat genki as an early mothers day dinner. Got there. Wait wasnt too bad. Sat at 8pm. Didnt get out till a little after 9. Our food started coming out fast. However around the half hour mark before close we were still missing items. Okay. One item came out wrong. So she took it away. It was 2 regular ahi wontons. Came out as 1 and it was spicy. It is okay things like this happens. It was what followed that was more irritating. I flagged one of the servers down. She and her coworker aplogized but before she left i did mention that we had ordered 2 for our kids. Takes it away and i mention that we are missing this one item we ordered. I make sure to tell them because it automatically gets charged to you now with their new system. Again it takes awhile for it to come out. Meanwhile i can see the 2 girls clearly talking about us because what? The order was wrong and it has been over half an hour for 2 items? If youre gonna talk shit, at least be right about it. But when it is not even our fault, dont. I had to ask again about the wontons and where they were. If it wasnt for the fact that it was food for my kids, i wouldve just asked to take it off and be on our way. My kids 1 wonton finally came out 5 minutes till closing and was skimpy. I mean SKIMPY. 7$ for less than 2 ounces of ahi. The original server who took their order decided now she was gonna check on us? To top it all off, at the end, we paid in cash. My other half took the $ to them to pay while we waited outside. Bill was 89.50 or something close. For some reason the original girl counted out the $ and we gave them 90$. She counted out the 90$ then gave it to a different server who took the money away(sketchy shit) and counted it. Then gave it to the only server guy working last night the money to count. The entire bar was open... and there was maybe less than 5 people waiting for a table, while there was no one waiting for the bar. If you have ever been to a Genki sushi, it's like those. But in Kapolei. If you have not been to Genki sushi because you live under a rock, or just moved here, or are one of those people from a small-ish town in the mainland that didn't eat asian food until going to University, the sushi goes around in circles and you make quick decisions or risk three minutes of deep-seated regret. Actually, that is no longer true. Since the advent of their screen-based ordering system and speedy bullet-train delivery mechanisms, regret is now at a minimum. I'm not even sure why anyone picks up the open-air merry-go-round sushi that may or may not have been circling for hours, but perhaps it is the novelty or the impulsivity or the nostalgia for pre-screen conveyor belt sushi. So. My kids loved it as they love all Genki sushi joints with screens and buttons and delivery trains. I like it because it is one of the few "normal" places my girlfriend and I can sort of eat at if we are pretending to be not weird. Which we are. So super weird. Generally, I go to Genki for a quick sushi fix and I am pleased. This Genki location in particular that makes the review so low. I been here more than once and I usually let poor service go because I give fast pace food establishments the benefit of the doubt. But if their poor service is consistent, then I show no mercy. At our most recent visit, we were sat in the back and completely forgot about. So you know, you have to give a stare down to gain attention. Once our server came, she took out her note pad and said "what do you want?" No greeting or eye contact. We placed our order, and when it was ready it was sent to the table besides us. How did we know? Because those customers looked confused and said they will try it anyway. The prices did increase, as it did throughout the chain, and completely understandable. But if food quality decrease with it, that is definitely not reasonable. Tip: don't display pictures of food if your presentation and quality of the actual item looks nothing like that. For example, I ordered the shogun roll, the one with cream cheese. When I got it there was no cream cheese in sight and I even had to ask if this was just a deep fried shrimp tempura roll. Sassy server said "its in there, don't you see it? If you don't taste it then I'll take it back and get a new one, but taste it?" Didn't wanna bite back so I tried it and there was a very thin layer, she came back and ask if there was. Although I don't travel to Kapolei often.....actually, to be brutally honest, it is very rare I ever get to Kapolei. My driving to Kapolei is almost as rare as being bitten by a vampire, granted admission to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, or being selected to participate in The Hunger Games. But, I digress, and it is because of my very rare and recent visit to Kapolei that I am able to share about my dining experience at its Genki Sushi location. Genki Sushi Kapolei is located in the Kapolei Commons shopping complex, which boasts a great number of parking spaces farther than the eye can see. GOOD: 1) This location is very clean and well kept. 2) The staff is very polite, friendly, and offer satisfactory customer service. I appreciated that our primary server repeatedly checked with us for water and tea refills, that everything was "ok", and kindly took orders when we made requests. 3) The staff preparing the sushi in the main area are quick, and thankfully do a decent job of keeping track of the length of time dishes have been on their conveyor belt system...i.e. I saw 1 staff member dump the contents of 2 dishes into the trash, which I assumed spent its maximum amount of time on the belt. 4) All of orders were delivered within an acceptable amount of time after they were placed. 5) The quality of the ingredients looks to be the same as other locations I've been to. NOT SO GOOD: 1) I wish they had more seats available for waiting customers. Bottom Line: On my next visit to Kapolei (which I don't know when that will be since my crystal ball is in the shop), if I'm craving sushi, I certainly will stop by. read more

I've been waiting to write this review with the hopes that Genki Sushi Kapolei would improve it's service and quality of food. After eating there this afternoon it's apparent it won't be happening any time soon. First let's talk service. Some days the service is very good and the servers are attentive, other days the servers clearly aren't happy with their choice of employment and it shows. Unfortunately today was one of those "I hate my job" days. When we got there it was a full house but tables were leaving and servers were clearing off counter space and booths. Put my name on the list and was was told we would be seated soon. Yea right! Spotted the waitress joking (loudly) with the prep people behind the counter and 2 other servers talking amongst themselves by the cash register. After about 10 mins it was obvious we weren't going to be seated any time soon unless one of the servers pried themselves away from whatever very important conversation they were having with their coworkers. I approached the waitress who told us we would be seated soon (she was the one gabbing with the prep people) and asked if we could have one of the booths that was open. She told me I had to wait my turn and turned her attention back to the prep people. I told her I WAS next in line and pointed to my name on the list to which she responded "FINE!!! Take that booth!" and kind of shooed and waved us over to the booth. Same waitress comes over and takes our drink orders. Since we were sitting right next to the drink station we got what we ordered rather quickly: tea and water. She asked if we wanted to order anything and we do. While she's taking our order she's punching it into the computer system and I kid you not, mid sentence into my friend ordering, the waitress walks away and starts talking to the booth next to us. Meanwhile my friend who's looking at the menu doesn't realize she's talking to air, so I say, "aaaannnddd she's gone". I was only able to get in an order of chicken & ika karaage before the waitress took off. When she comes back she asks if we're done ordering. Like really? Who does that?? Let's talk food. I've been noticing the freshness in the sushi has been declining and today was a very bad day. I ordered the spicy ahi and I seriously almost threw up! The ahi tasted as if it was frozen, defrosted, dragged on the kitchen floor, stomped on then thrown on a piece of rice then slapped on the plate. When I bit into it, it was crunchy and my mouth flooded with water. It was gross! I flagged down a waiter and told him they should check the ahi because it tasted funny but he was indifferent. He apologized. Not his fault and I wasn't looking for an apology. If the sushi is bad, pull it, don't serve it. I told a manager and his explanation was they were now using a different part of the ahi. Oh no no no...I told him it def tasted spoiled and not that it was a different cut of ahi. Unless of course they were now using ahi guts (ok didn't say that part but thought it) Suggested whoever is prepping it should taste it and he said he would have someone check on it. It took forever to get the check. I had already asked for the check after the bad ahi. After about 10 mins the waiter finally came over and tallied up the plates, Did I mention that by this time there were not many tables there? We had to wait at the cash register for the waitress to ring us up, she stood with her back to us and when my friend said, "excuse me" she was given the "hand".....you know the "hold on a sec, I'm busy doing something much more important than ringing you up" hand? After a couple of mins she finally turned her attention to us and rang us up. No "thank you"...nothing, silence....crickets chirping..... There have been times when we've gone there for an early lunch and there were no green onions on the spicy ahi. When asked I was told they ran out. Seriously? Then why do I see green onions on top of the spicy tempura rolls that's going around the conveyor belt? And how do you run out of green onions one hour into service? Not a biggie just pointing out this particular Genki is inconsistent. Save your $$ and drive the extra distance to Waikele or Pearl City. The service is way better and the sushi def seems fresher. You couldn't pay me to go back to the Kapolei location. It's obvious nobody there likes their job, it shows in the lackluster service and poor quality of food. Anyways, food was great and I wanted to thank our server KAZU. He was so attentive and super friendly. Always made me smile and laugh. My hubby kept making jokes when he was running around cleaning tables and checking on us every so often. My review is based on numerous visits. I love sushi. I love the whole conveyor belt idea. But I love being treated like a valued customer even more. (If you read my other reviews... you'll find this one aspect that I look for in every business) Genki Sushi lacks customer service. They don't know how to smile. I could put their staff on blast by listing each person by name from their nametag... but, I won't do that. They don't know how to loosen the wrinkles in their forehead or eyebrows... this makes them look angry all the time! They don't know how to apologize when they forget your drink refills or if your order didn't come. Sorry... I would much rather drive the extra 15 minutes and wait for 30-45 minutes to go to Kuru Kuru Sushi at Pearl Kai Shopping Center. Genki isn't worth it anymore. I am tired of coming... thinking my dining experience would be much better then before. Customers? STRIKE ONE. Hoping things would get better, we both ordered right away and tried to make nothing of the unwelcoming vibe. I ordered a miso soup and my friend ordered a spicy ahi bowl with no green onion garnish. The waitress gave my friend an almost flustered look for her special request - ARE YOU SERIOUS? It wasn't busy at all! STRIKE TWO. We also ordered two hot green teas. Mine literally tasted fishy. Like they used the water that they washed the fish in to make the tea. Blah. STRIKE THREE. My friend ordered the chicken karaaage. It took her THREE REMINDERS about the order to bring it out. STRIKE FOUR. We also needed to wave down the waitress to refill our water - and we were seated right next to the cash register and opening to the kitchen. Again, it was not busy. STRIKE FIVE. And then waiting for our bill - another two reminders before she actually rang us up. STRIKE SIX. The only redeeming moment was the Kabocha Tempura. That was on point. Hot. Fresh. Yum. But those three pieces of goodness were totally overshadowed by the SIX STRIKES of UGH. My first time at this location... The food was delicious. My favorite is the baked mussels. I was amazed at their new ordering system. They have this computer system to take orders. I guess it's a good thing because if you're hungry you don't have to wait for the waitress or waiter to come back. The downside for me is, you can only order 4 items at a time. Sitting alone at the sushu bar, I ate: Chawan Mushi: Decent flavor but a little lacking in additional items other than the tofu and tiny shrimp. Salmon karaage (2): Surprisingly good. I finished a complete order and then ordered another one to-go. At first I thought there would be rice underneath but the entire bowl was salmon. Udon: Decent. Genki Sushi was the first Kaiten-Zushi (Conveyer-belt Sushi) place in Hawaii years ago, and when it first landed, it was a phenomenon. It opened the eyes to many people (including myself) who were either just coming of age to start eating out on their own, or those who were always too intimidated to sit at an actual sushi bar and order sushi without knowing anything or being able to see anything before they commit serious chunks of money for small pairs of fish-topped rice balls. These days though, while Genki Sushi has exploded into a chain and is the most popular sushi restaurant in Hawaii by sheer volume alone, and while they've generally maintained their quality since their first opening... sadly, for those who have moved on to "better" sushi, Genki Sushi just doesn't cut it anymore. However, there are Genki Sushi locations all over the place and you never have to go too far to find one. This is "convenience" sushi; the kind you have when you just feel like having some sushi and don't want to bother going too far for it. Get in fast, get out fast, you get your taste, and you're done. For me, this location is my neighborhood location so I still come here on occasion when I don't want to bother with driving to Kona Kai or waiting two weeks for a reservation at Morio's or Mitch's, or waiting in the queue at Kuru Kuru. This location also has the added benefit of almost never having a wait. Here's what you need to know about Genki Sushi Kapolei: FOOD: The sushi at Genki Sushi comes in pairs, on colored plates that travel around on a big conveyer belt. When you want something, just grab it off of the belt and onto your table surface to eat. Wasabi is on the belt also, just get what you need and put it back. Pickled Ginger is on your table, as is your shoyu and chopsticks. The different colors of plates denote the cost of the plate, starting at about $1.50 for the cheap stuff, $2.10 and $2.85 for the stuff most people like to eat, then up to around $4 for the good stuff (Ikura, Hamachi, etc.). There is also a selection of rolls and cooked foods that you are able to order, including a pretty good Chicken Karaage and a Kabocha Tempura. The sushi here is made by Sushi Robot, meaning the rice is squeezed out into little squarish balls before sushi chefs take them and use them as the base for their creations. For a place like this, I'm OK with that. The fish quality is also just "decent" but "acceptable", and I'm OK with that as well. Nothing spectacular, but it's fun, it's close by all the time, and it's cheap. PARKING: Parking is plentiful. This Genki Sushi is in the Kapolei Commons shopping center, shared with Target. ORDERING/ SEATING: You can get your food two ways: Off of the conveyer belt covered in plates making their rounds around the restaurant, or you can order from one of the servers who will either place your order with the kitchen inside, or from the sushi chefs in the center of the conveyer belt. When it's ready, the server will either bring it out from the kitchen for you or the sushi chef will place it on top of the conveyer belt covering for you to grab. Seating is either bar type at the counter facing the conveyer belt or by booth. 6 Booths seating 6 comfortably, plus about 25 stools at the counter. SERVICE: Hit and miss here. Mostly hit for me. The servers check back once in a while to see if you want to place any orders. Water mostly stays full, no real complaints with it. When you are ready to pay, flag down a server and they will issue you a check totaling up all your plate colors and you take that to the register in the front to pay. ATMOSPHERE: Novel. For those who have never been to a Kaiten-zushi restaurant, the concept of having your sushi made and arrive to you is a very interesting experience. It's a feast for the eyes - we dine with our eyes first, and watching plates of sushi arriving close to you and hoping the guy before you don't grab it first makes it kind of fun. COST/ VALUE: Very good value for sushi. I usually get out of Genki spending roughly $20 and being reasonably full. The sushi isn't that great, but it's not bad either; Genki is definitely convenience-value sushi. VERDICT: 3/5 - I could go on all day about correct sushi rice temperature and grades of fish and sushi robots, but when it comes down to it, I still come back here very often even though it's just "A-OK". It's similar to why you end up at Jack in the Box every once in a while; because you feel like having a burger that doesn't have to be awesome and you don't want to go to Honolulu Burger Company or something to get it. I'll probably keep coming back too, unless I win some lottery and can afford to eat at Morio's every day. Until then, Genki Sushi is my neighborhood regular sushi place. read more

We've been wanting to try their new bigger location in Kapolei by Ulta Beauty. Loved the automated ordering with the iPads on the tables and the delivery with the little trains. We came later in the day on a Saturday, so we missed the lunch crowd. However, by the time we left, people were outside waiting for tables. Good selection.. Fresh made.. Toddler and Teenager approved. If you're like me, I thought sushi was all about raw fish.. So it took me years to go... My daughter invited us to join her and my granddaughter for lunch and we were pleasantly surprised.. There's also "cooked" chicken and beef.. Lol.. Okay, most of us have eaten at Genki. I've eaten at several locations across the island and I've always had positive experiences in terms of the food. They have a nice array of specials, but the only thing lacking was the crab and cheese wontons that they have at some other locations. The two stars I'm giving were for the food, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I had to ONLY give two stars because the service was bad--really, really bad. My server was rude. In fact, a few of the other servers were equally as bored and angry looking. Who gives sodas without straws, then when I ask for straws you say "okay" and then walk away and stand in the corner. Then I ask for a fork to eat my chicken karaage (judge me, I don't particularly like chopsticks), and I see you write down on your pad and then I never get my fork. I had to ask another waitress for it. Do servers not realize that body language says it all? You don't only have to say things to be rude, customers can tell when you don't like your job and it leaves a figuratively bad taste in my mouth. Next time, I'll stick to Waikele, Pearl City, or Ewa for sure. NEVER coming back to this location unless I'm dragged against my will--or maybe if they hire some new people. read more

Me & the hubby were craving sushi and we spotted Genki sushi outside of Ross. It was 8:45 at night and we didn't know what time they closed, so what did we do? Yelp it!...They close at 9! We quickly scurry over and were greeted by the nice hostess at the front desk. I asked her if they are about to close and she kindly says, "No, we close at 9, you have plenty time!" I myself, don't really like people walking in 15 minutes prior to close time, so I felt really bad, but she didn't make me feel bad at all! We get seated by a cute-tiny Caucasian girl in a booth, and Bianca came to serve us. Bianca is a great server! Smiling, making sure our water is okay, patiently waiting for my indecisive self to order off the menu even though they close in 10 minutes. She was great. I ordered the eggplant fry, and mixed vegetable tempura. The bf ordered a spicy tuna bowl. After we ordered, we just kept pulling sushi off the belt! We had mostly black and silver plates, and halved each plate. The sushi here is always good. The chefs who were making the sushi were also very nice and made sure we got our menu food before we finished with the belt food. Our total came out to about $35 dollars, which wasn't bad at all since we had mostly silver and black plates, and we were stuffed. I have to say, I enjoy this location the most.
