Our last night in Boston, we decided to dine at Genki Ya and we are dying to try the Scorpion Bowl, which is meant for 2 but its good for me and my friends as I am such a lightweight! Good thing we were seated upstairs with a nice window view overlooking Downtown Boston. The music was pretty kick ass and the tables around us were majority filled by other dining customers. Decent sushi for an affordable price - get the 2 or 3 roll special!! It was a nice day out so I ordered online, picked up my sushi, and then ate at Boston Common. It's by no means the best quality, but it's still tasty and a great bargain. The 3 roll special was $14.50 + tax and comes with three basic Maki rolls, a side salad, miso soup, and an orange wedge. It sounds super simple but that's why it's so good. You can choose from many different roll options (again, they're the less complex specialty rolls). Some of them include salmon, tuna, yellowtail (plain or spicy), different veggies like cucumber or sweet potato, etc. It's hard to mess up miso soup but this one is actually really good and a decent size portion!! It was piping hot in the takeout container and included a generous amount of seaweed, enoki mushrooms, and tofu. I think I would have been full with just the two rolls but I wanted to try more. I got the spicy tuna, yellowtail scallion, and eel avocado. The last one was definitely my favorite but I would get them all again. A heads up though: I realize that a lot of sushi restaurants in Boston make their spicy tuna rolls with chopped tuna, tempura flakes, and barely spicy mayo. I absolutely LOVE Genki Ya! From their incredibly fresh Sashimi and Maki rolls to their refreshingly tasty martini drinks. The service here is also fantastic, the servers we had have always been really nice and friendly. Genki Ya also has seating on the 2nd floor with window seats overlooking downtown Boston which's pretty awesome especially at night. But the music does get a bit loud and it could be difficult to have a conversation unless you excel in lip-reading. The first level however offers a much more quiet and chillax atmosphere. Drinks: My favorite is the Lychee martini, not too sweet, not too liquor-y. Chris makes it perfect every time! Sashimi/Rolls: We always get the Sashimi appetizer, which comes with tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. 2 pieces of each and generously cut. I'm also a big salmon lover so I always go for any rolls with salmon in it. From the numerous times we've eaten there, Some of our favorite rolls were "Spicy Salmon Delight", "Tri Color Roll", "Rainbow Roll", "Delicious Roll", and the "Volcano Roll". (the volcano portion is humongous, enough to be shared by two!) Dessert: I'm hooked on their tempura fried ice cream!!! You can choose from red bean, green tea and a couple other flavors. I came here hoping to grab some good sushi and have a great time. Knowing that Justin Bieber came here before, I was expecting a top notch experience. The sushi was great but the customer service was lacking. Came in and got seated immediately. The waitress at our table abruptly demands what beverages we wanted. It took us a while to order as we wanted to order 2 rolls each, we may have taken a total of 10-15 mins to look through and decide. Within that time, the waitress came over 3 times asking if we can order yet. She was real quick about the bill....paying and also grabbing after we paid. Not sure if she was intentional or just her tone, but it didn't feel very friendly or welcoming. Fortunately, the food came quick and was beautifully set on a boat. We ordered a sunny roll, caterpillar, double spicy salmon, alligator, California, and a spider roll. My only minor complaint was that the sunny roll kept falling apart, but aside from that, the salmon was super fresh, everything tasted amazing. There were so many pieces in one roll and generously portioned. This is by far the best place for sushi in Boston I've been to..the location itself is in a prime area. On the weekends it gets super busy because it's right next door to a couple nightclubs but, it's also a great place to come before and after you leave the club. They have 2 floors- downstairs is more quiet and upstairs you will find the bar (this is where it's typically the loudest) if you sit next to the windows you have a great people watching view. This is entertaining after hours since everyone is typically leaving the club looking for food (aka me) or just stumbling on the streets. Either way the staff is friendly, social and extremely respectful despite where you swing in from. The scorpion bowls and sushi rolls will not disappoint! Everything about it was delicious, fresh fish but it is supposed to be on a bed of fried seaweed rice and I felt that should have been...crunchier? Looking at their menu, there were an extensive number of rolls offered and it took me awhile to comb through them. I ultimately decided on 2 rolls for myself and a scorpion bowl to share. Alligator Roll (eel, crab sticks, avocado, cucumber, and flying fish roe on top of shrimp tempura roll + eel sauce): I really liked this roll, but that's because I normally really enjoy shrimp tempura rolls and unagi rolls. Spicy King Crab Tempura Roll (king crab, avocado, cucumber, and spicy mayo- deep fried w/ tempura batter+ eel sauce): Tasty Scorpion bowl: not sure what exactly is in the mixture, but you could definitely taste the Bacardi 151 in the drink. The drink was very strong and should be shared between 2-3 people. With such an extensive list of rolls, I feel like you can't go wrong with any of the combinations as long as you like each ingredient of that roll. I also think the scorpion bowl was well worth the experience. If you happen to be in the Chinatown area, this is a safe option for sushi if you are craving sushi. For most entrees, you will get a serving of miso soup. Their lunch special for maki is definitely worth a try and presents great value for what you are getting. Their chicken katsu curry is always a solid option and they provide a generous amount of chicken and potatoes to accompany the curry. When in doubt for an entree, chicken katsu curry is always a safe choice. The makimono combo and triple roll combination are also great value entree items if you need some standard sushi rolls. Any of their spicy tempura _____ rolls are also great options if you need to liven up the party. Customer service is usually pretty hands off though they do check up on you for water and ask you how the food is going - I am not too picky here so long as they are generally attentive and I can enjoy my food in relative peace. Great Sushi place! I've been here only 3 times so far but honestly, it's one of the best sushi places I have been to in this area. The downstairs is a little small and can get a little tight when busy but it doesn't matter, its a terrific atmosphere. The upstairs is the best. It has a great view and is a good date spot. I HIGHLY recommend the shrimp tempura which is my favorite roll on the menu. I've also had the California rolls, the caterpillar rolls, spider rolls, edamame, their shrimp dumplings (also amazingly good) and also their miso soup which is actually the best miso soup I've ever eaten. I can't wait to try other things on their menu. I definitely prefer it over Douzo in the Back Bay, which I thought was going to be a good experience but sadly wasn't. Since Montien stopped serving their sushi, this has been my go to...especially for the lunch specials. For $13.50, you can get a miso soup, salad and entree. I usually get the Sushi or Sashimi lunch special and it is always good. They also have a two or three maki roll special. I always leave feeling full. Their fish is high quality and delicious. Service is very fast and the dining room very clean. I have ordered take out a few times and it is also solid. The restaurant is super comfortable and the staff is very nice. I have never had to wait for a table, but it is always crowded. It is super easy to get to and is located on the corner of Tremont and Stuart Streets. Very close to all of the theaters. Genki Ya is 1) expensive 2) their delivery took really long and 3) my food was cold like it was sitting out in the to go box for 45 minutes before they finally delivered. And I'm only 7 minutes driving distance for the driver. If i owned a car I wouldn't gone there myself for pick up. Went to a late lunch at Genki Ya- Boston on a Saturday afternoon around 3pm. We were seated in the upstairs area by a friendly hostess. The atmosphere is outdated and the rest rooms definitely need an update/better cleaning. We ordered green teas to start which were delicious, nice nutty note like a genmaicha. We also started with the gyoza that we also enjoyed. We ordered an array of sushi dishes, a volcano roll, a rich salmon roll, a shrimp tempura roll, and a seared salmon roll. The salmon on the rich salmon roll was fantastic. Good sized pieces that were buttery and fresh tasting. The volcano roll was massive and completely covered in tempura flakes. The shrimp tempura roll was a little greasy for my liking, and didn't have much avocado. The seared salmon roll had a good amount of cooked salmon inside, but I didn't think the top was seared enough. Overall good experience. I would try their other locations. read more

But we would definitely prefer it upstairs the next time we give this place a shot. It has a very modern set up and in some ways it is trying to compete with Douzo. The place can absolutely be a good hangout after work if you are in the financial district. The bar upstairs is not too big but pretty good. It has a very chique feel given the dark furniture. So well done on that aspect as well. 5 out of 5. Price: Now here comes the tricky part. Given my satisfaction levels with the food I had, I am not too impressed with the price. Having said that - I will wait to come back again. For now I think this place is expensive for the quality of food we had. 3 out of 5. Overall: Good place to socialize in a group. You can go with a date or significant other. And if you like people watching, the tables onlooking the street on the upper level are a good option. I seriously hope next time I come here, and we order the other roles or some other entrees, I will have the opportunity to update this review with more positive things. Finally, never ordering anything that sounds like "The Volcano Roll" - anywhere I go. When it comes to sushi, the boundaries of adventure (for me) have very definitive limits! This place took over the old Shanghai restaurant and KarOK bar. The inside has been transformed to be more modern, bright, and chic looking. Downstairs is the main dining area with a row of 2-seater tables (that can be pushed together for larger groups) and the sushi bar. The sushi bar has high-top chairs while the 2-seater tables has options for booth style seating on one side and regular chairs for the other. The upstairs has the bar/lounge area with 4 TVs. The seating is the same as downstairs with tables that can be pushed together to make room for larger groups. The TVs are positioned so that you can see one wherever you are sitting. Upstairs also offers a 2nd story view of Stuart and Tremont...which is slightly better than a ground level view! They currently do not offer the same karaoke that the old restaurant did. Came here with Christine C. on opening day and their sushi selection was extensive but not impressive. The quality and taste were good however. Finally a decent sushi restaurant in Chinatown! This place has 2 floors and the decoration of this restaurant is better than other restaurants around Chinatown. The sushi is always fresh. They also have a wide selection of rolls and the price is reasonable. After dining here a few times, I definitely found some dishes that I love and some that I would pass on. I recommend the torched sashimi, alligator roll, spicy tuna tempura roll, and healthy ichiban. I would love to try other rolls on the menu! I also tried the red sox roll. It was only 4 pieces. It was deep fried and each roll was topped with a chunk of rice. I just felt that it was too much rice and cream cheese. It is just not my type of sushi that I usually go for. I tried some of their drinks here. It is always good to enjoy some sake with sushi :). I also tried the wine here. It is pretty good. Service here is also really good. In my never-ending search for the best sushi in Boston, I decided to try out Genki Ya based on its Yelp rating. I found it to be fine, but nothing particularly memorable. The pictures on the menu (although they bring the restaurant's class down a bit in my opinion) definitely help when trying to make your choice, as there are a large number of roll options. I always order at least one specialty roll when I go out for sushi, so we opted for the Genki Ya, which was fishy and warm and fried. And large. I try not to bite rolls in half in order to get all the flavors in my mouth at once, but when I attempted to fit in this bad boy, I nearly choked. We also got the Alaskan roll and the Rainbow roll, which are fresh sushi spot staples. The prices here could be cheaper, but the higher price tags make sense considering their location downtown. I wouldn't trek over here from Cambridge again, but at least now I know that Genki Ya is a solid sushi option if I happen to find myself downtown and craving raw fish. Last night I went for dinner & I wasn't sure if the kitchen was backed up or if they were short staffed, but the service was a little slow. Arrived at 7:30. Waited about 20 minutes to be greeted at our table and then left the restaurant pretty late after finishing up (close to 9:30). The owner (i'm assuming that's who was walking around to greet guests) was very attentive. He walked us to our table, asked how everything was & thanked us as we left.
