This is hands down my favorite sushi restaurant in all of Boston/Cambridge area. We've ordered from here (mostly delivery, but sometimes in person as well) more times than I can count. The fish here is the best and freshest I've ever tasted! The sashimi appetizer is amazing (salmon literally tastes like butter) and the avocado salad is the best of all restaurants in the area. For rolls, my favorite is the healthy ichiban, followed closely by salmon avocado and double spicy salmon. The vegetable rolls at first seem a bit strange, but are actually good- especially anything with sweet potato and banana (who knew??). The twins rolls is also very good, as is the Hawaii. A good tip for ordering out is to use their website to accumulate points, especially taking advantage of their 2/3 sushi roll combo deal. read more

Genki Ya has perfected the ultimate takeout experience. They have an easy online ordering process through their website which also offers free menu items when you place an order over $30. After you order and pay through their website online, you go and pick up your order which they have laid out on a table at the front of their restaurant with your receipt. Genki Ya is as contact-less as can be! They also package up your order super well with really pretty and sturdy lime green bags (like gift bags) that is stapled at the top so you can be confident in your delivery as well if you choose to go the delivery route over pickup. Genki Ya is a reasonably priced sushi restaurant. We ordered the Crazy Roll, Spicy Salmon Roll, Sunset Roll, Double Spicy Salmon Roll, Double Spicy Tuna Roll and after all that got a Spicy Tuna Roll for free! Each roll was packed up super well as you can see in my pictures and they were all beautiful. All our rolls generally just had tuna, salmon, and shrimp tempura. The quality of tuna and salmon was pretty decent. The shrimp tempura was nicely fried as well and not over battered with good-sized shrimp. I usually hate over-sauced rolls so it's odd for me to say this but I almost wish the Double Spicy Salmon Roll and Double Spicy Tuna Roll had a bit more spicy mayo for a little more umph and flavor. While we enjoyed all our rolls, we definitely had to dip them into soy sauce for some flavor. Spicy mayo, eel sauce... anything! Even though I had poor customer service from the "manager," himself I was convinced by a friend to go back in after searching for a sushi place with drinks on a Saturday night. Again, just poor customer service to begin with. I dined in this time and self sat myself upstairs as the host said "just go up." It was a Saturday night and we were expecting it to be busy, but it was rarely empty. The server was very slow and useless. She didn't even bother coming over to take our order until we had to flag her down. We had to ask for our food after waiting 45 minutes for a roll of sushi. We had to ask for more water and another round of drinks. Luckily there was a bartender there so we just went up to the bar ourselves instead of relying on the "server." I felt like I served myself. Close to my customer's office and quite nice looking from the outside, Genki Ya is all stone and glass. Fancy. Inside, they are on two floors and we were brought to a nice table upstairs next to the glass. Service during lunch time was quick though refills of water would have been helpful. For an appetizer we had kaiyaki which was crab and scallop mixed with mushrooms and spicy mayo on a scallop shell. I had the Alaska roll with brown rice and sunny roll. We shared white tuna sashimi. Our waiter was so so. For example, he kept forgetting our water and only brought lemons out. This is one of the better sushi places I've had outside of New York. WOW - so the sushi and sashimi is amazing but I recommend go to the other locations. They had two people working an exceptionally full upstairs area on a Saturday night at peak hours - it was pretty ridiculous. The convenience is if you are seeing a show at the Wang Theater/Boch across the street you can see the line to get in etc which was our main reason for dropping in. Two months ago, my friend and I went here for dinner. We asked for a table for two and they brought us up to the second floor. The floor underneath our assigned table had a puddle of water so we asked to get seated at a different table. We ordered the super dragon roll, salmon tempura roll, doomsday roll, and curry rice with pork katsu. The super dragon roll consisted of eel and avocado on top of sweet potato tempura roll with eel sauce. The salmon tempura roll consisted of salmon, asparagus, and fish roe fried in tempura batter with eel sauce. The doomsday roll had spicy crab, eel, banana, cream cheese, avocado, fish roe with tempura flakes and eel and spicy mayo sauce. All three sushi rolls were really delicious. The curry rice however was on the different end of the spectrum. The curry was very watery and the pork katsu was very dry. It was definitely over fried. read more

This is my new favorite sushi restaurant in the city (Downtown/Chinatown/North End/South End/Back Bay). It was totally worth the gross walk in the rain through the flooded Chinatown to get there. First of all, we were "seated" upstairs and the view was great. It may not be the prettiest view in the city, but it's great for people watching (or rain watching, if that's your thing). So back to being "seated," we walked into the restaurant and the manager, who was on the phone, pointed to the stairs next to him without saying anything and so we went upstairs and just sat down at any table we wanted. I'm not sure if that's the norm, but I was a little disappointed at the lack of communication. Especially since we originally thought we would like to dine in the first floor dining room. Service was overall good. The server was very attentive, although sometimes a little over eager. He tried to take my almost finished miso soup away and I had to glare at him. After ordering miso soups, we decided to get the volcano roll (because I saw many pictures of it on the Yelp page before getting there) and the sushi/sashimi combo. Sushi/sashimi combo: HUGE cuts of sashimi (3 pieces of each of tuna, yellowtail, and salmon) were very fresh and it just melted in my mouth. It was definitely one of the best sashimi I've had in greater Boston. Maybe even the best. It also had 6 pieces of nigiri, which was also fresh and delicious. Lastly, it also had 8 pieces of maki rolls. Great value for the quality and the amount of food you get. Volcano roll: This was a nice contrast to sushi and sashimi combo. It was warm and had a nice kick from the spices. Regular sized tower of maki rolls were topped with shittake mushroom, crab, and scallops. Oh yea, and a mountain of tempura crumbs. Sad to see this place fall into the Chinatown trap. I was in town briefly and wanted to get my sushi fix. As I walked in I was hit with a bad bad stench. Like maybe bad curry? Does curry go bad? My friend had been waiting already and had commented on it as well. The sushi was good, but they clearly downgraded the rice because the rolls were falling apart. Service was abysmal. The restaurant was empty and my friend and I were just trying to catch up and enjoy some quality time, yet our server was hounding us every 5 min when we clearly hadn't even had a chance to look at the menu. Smells and poor service aside, the bathroom was pure filth. Every surface was soaked. Very akin to the public restroom in Faneuil Hall. At least there's still the Brookline location. read more

And now why it is 3 stars only: - the table was not cleaned (had to wipe it off ourselves) - staff did not give us plate and sticks, we just had three sets for five people, so we had to organise two sets from other tables ourselves. - they predefined a 18% tip themselves and added it to the bill, I prefer to do this myself - seems when the service is not perfect they know this and therefore add it themselves.
