Joan and Daniel came out to snake my sink and install a new pop up assembly for my drain. Joan walked me through the issues and gave me multiple options to resolve the problem at different price points. Daniel had the work done in about an hour and my drain is great now. And if something goes wrong, I'm covered by a 14 day warranty. I recommend Genteel plumbers if you have a larger issue that will require multiple hours to fix, or have a persistent issue and want to benefit from the 14 day warranty to ensure the issue is resolved, but unfortunately I believe their flat-rate structure is not well suited to quicker fixes like the one I needed and that as a result I massively overpaid today. That's on me, I suspected and chose to allow the work to just get it over with, but in the future I will instead reach out to someone advertising an hourly rate for these kinds of issues. read more

Is anyone else tired of this extortionist game where tradespeople offer a " consultation" for even the most common tasks, set up a meeting, and then hit you with a huge quote with the expectation that you'll accept it rather than take another hour out of your day to schedule with someone else? I need to have a toilet fill valve and flapper replaced and I don't feel like doing it. I'm happy to pay a lot. What I'm not happy to do, is get gamed. I think it's reasonable to ask the hourly rate. My 80 year old dad needed a new water heater. Installation area has super Easy access, No major replacement of plumbing lines. The water heater he had installed is listed at $900 or less several places online. Genteel came out, drained old heater and installed new heater. Took them 2-3 hours. The tech capped off the "recirculating" line which makes hot water get to the bathroom faster. The charge was $4920 - when my dad told him the water took 3+ minutes to get hot in the upper bathroom the tech charged him $520 to reinstall the recirculating pipe (less than 5 ft of copper and a few press connections (no solder) I have had several water heater replacements in the last few years (I'm a realtor) that were all similar and only cost $2000-$3000 - I get the feeling that Genteel took advantage of an older client. I emailed them to ask their hourly rate and they never responded. $1000 per hour seems pretty opportunistic. read more

Excellent service from Genteel Plumbing, as usual! We have used Genteel Plumbing for years, and are always completely satisfied with the services provided. Their Technicians are professional, highly skilled, knowledgeable, efficient and tidy. Their Technician, Joan, arrived on-time/early, during our prearranged appointment window. He gave us a fair and reasonable estimate of the services that we requested, along with a detailed explanation of the services that he would be providing. Joan has previously serviced our home, clearing drains, and installing our water heater. He did excellent work then, and we have been more than satisfied with the long lasting results. Today, he returned to change out our bathroom faucets, our downstairs shower head, and the downstairs J-tube. He also changed out the 1/4 shutoff valves for the upstairs and downstairs sinks. During the installation, he found an old galvanized piece of steel pipe feeding our cold water, that was rotting, and replaced it with a clean Brass piece. I have used the same plumber for many years, but then he moved away, so I had to find a new one. I found Genteel plumbers online because they had very good reviews. It was very easy to schedule with them and talk to the company over the phone and also via text message. I found them very responsive, which made it easy to coordinate. Edgar arrived on time, and made the whole process easy and seamless. Often times I think the best service is where you don't have to think about it too much. It just flows really well and that's the experience I had with Edgar. He explained what he had fixed and what may or may not happen if something is not fixable. We had used Genteel a few times in our SF property over the years. We know they charge slightly above other plumbers, but we were okay because we thought they did good work at slightly above rate pricing. Responsive and nice folks. Well, this recent visit took a weird turn and unfortunately, it was not satisfactory. My husband called them because of an emergency a few weeks ago. Our upstairs bathroom sink's handle (one of them) broke off and water was shooting up the ceiling. He tried to shut off the shut-off valve under the sink, but it was stuck, so he had to run down and shut off the main to the house. When Genteel came, they did fix the shutoff valve, but they started adding all types of costs that drove the estimate and final bill up to $2550+. The kicker was that they essentially sold us a new faucet for $800+ and because the cost was mounting as additional issues was "continuously being found", my husband put a stop to it and just paid them $2550+ and told them to leave. Long story short, the main issue wasn't fix, but they did fix the shut off valve and other valve knobs. Sorry if I'm putting wrong technical names as I'm not familiar with all their vocabulary. The real issue is we have a new faucet we couldn't even use because they didn't even connect it due to another set of problems they now found in the wall after they connected the faucet. Hmmm. We eventually got another plumber to fix the wall issue and finally connect the use of the faucet at reasonable costs. I feel like Genteel package themselves well and they are no doubt great at what they do, but unfortunately I am appalled by their crazy pricing. Spent a bunch of time scheduling a diagnostic visit. Then at the last minute, after the appointment is scheduled they spring on me there's a $149 diagnostic visit fee. Many other plumbers offer free inspections. (Which take 10 minutes btw) don't be fooled by genteel. read more

Are they high end? Yes. Are they skilled? I guess. Are they honest? Well, let's talk about it. The big winter storm in December flooded my bathroom light well since the pipe from the drain was clogged and it caused the water to seep through the walls of my bathroom and garage. I asked them to clear the drain and change the P trap. It happened to be raining at the time. They cleared the drain and put a panel on top of the light well to keep the rain from coming in through the edge of the light well. They went up through the skylight that went up through the inside of the house to the roof which was not very high and pretty safe. So... I get a bill for $5800 to clear a drain and put a temporary panel on the roof which didn't take more than 45 minutes. One hour max. Yes you read that right. I asked them if they were going to change the P trap like I originally asked and the guy at the office with whom I was dealing said oh sure and made it sound like he was doing me a favor to change it. They told me at the beginning when they gave me the outrageous estimate that they could "include" what work was necessary as part the bill. Keep in mind they did not break down the labor or material costs. They only gave me the general estimate. I never worked before with a company that didn't break down the costs. These people sounded unethical to begin with. They did change the P trap but I thought that the total bill was still excessive for the work done. Now dealing with the very weird guy at the office was very discouraging to say the least since he tried to sound polite while justifying the excessive cost involved. Their title "Genteel" does not match what they represent in how they conduct business in my opinion. Their plumbers were polite and professional but dealing with their management is like getting stabbed with a bayonet and a smile. I tried to reason with the weird guy at the office and he tried to convince me that what they charged was reasonable. He said snooty things like "We are a real company" whatever that meant. I guess he was trying to say that overcharging people was somehow justified because they were a 'real company' and were of quality compared to 'other' companies. It goes to show what possible low opinions they had of other plumbing companies. I guess it was my mistake for accepting the terms although I thought the estimate was flexible from their wording of "we will adjust the cost for whatever work will be done or fit the cost to match the estimate" or something along those lines. I don't remember the exact words but it was basically saying that they would adjust the cost is what I understood but since they do not break down costs showing the materials and labor involved it was suspiciously deceptive in my estimation. The weird guy at the office said at one point: "they risked their lives going to the roof because it was raining" and other nonsense that didn't justify the costs. He then later retracted that statement because he knew he was exaggerating. I do not recommend them at all. It's hard to find a decent, honest plumber or electrician or any tradesman or contractor. Maybe I'll stick to the mom and pop types who seem to be more honest. By the way, they used my hose for the roof and then stole my nozzle. Nice work. read more

Genteel Plumbers is committed to doing jobs right and to having satisfied customers. I called them to fix some plumbing issues with our clothes washer (both the hot and cold lines were coming from the hot water heater). They sorted out the problem but when they went to turn the main back on, it wouldn't come on. Turns out the main line under the driveway was deteriorating. So they pulled all their available crew to come to our house to do an emergency maintenance line replacement, which involved digging a trench in the driveway. Mind you it's mid-day already and we are leaving for a vacation the next day. They worked as efficiently as they could to get everything finished and just before dark (probably 8pm since this was early July) they drove away. I was so impressed with their workmanship and dedication to getting the job done on our deadline. However, the speed with which they had to work meant that they couldn't put much time and attention to the driveway repair. So I mentioned a few months later that I wasn't happy with the driveway and they agreed that it wasn't their best work. I said it wasn't urgent so anytime they could come repair it would be great. Then early this week they called and said they would repair the driveway. Two days of work later it looks brand new. I will use Genteel Plumbers for all of my plumbing needs in the future. I've never experienced a company so committed to customer satisfaction and all around they are incredibly kind, skilled, and quality people. read more

Joe came out the replace the garbage disposal and found that the pipe was corroded at the base of the wall and floor. So he had to brake thru the floor and replace the pipe that runs under the house. Not recommending this company. Most of us need a plumber to be up front and trustworthy because we have a leak and need the problem solved. Daniel came out and said with great confidence that my soaked bathroom floor indicated the leak was coming from a leaking wax seal and their standard rate to replace is $694 (very high for less than an hour's work). After completing the work he proceeded to, in his words, "thoroughly inspect everything" to be sure the leak was resolved. He quickly found a very slow leak coming from the toilet shut-off valve, so for $300 more he could fix that. He said he hadn't checked that before replacing the wax ring because it was shut off when he arrived. Is this what a knowledgeable or trustworthy plumber does or says? read more
