If I had to describe George Street Pub in one word it would be "average." The staff was nice enough to sit us at a table near a TV that they were willing to put on NBC for the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Games. However, the service thereafter was lackluster. Our server took our drink orders, but then we had to ask her to take our food orders. We also had to ask her for subsequent drinks. The food wasn't anything special, and the environment was so loud that we could barely hear the other members of our party. Is George Street Pub great? No. It's average. Is it terrible? No. It's average. (It would have been awesome, by the way, if our server asked us if we'd like to order more drinks instead of leaning up against the station and checking her phone. Finally made it over to GSP last weekend. They have an amazing patio which I can't wait to get back to before winter. We had a larger group of 6 and the waitress was great about serving us throughout the evening. After reviewing the tab a day or so later, I noticed we had accidentally been charged for three of an item instead of one and when I went back to get it corrected they were so so friendly and apologetic. First time in and was treated so poorly by bartender that I will NEVER be coming back. After over 45 minutes of waiting for my check/waitress, I decided to go up to the main bar to ask if they can get me my check. The bartender was SO incredibly rude and told me that "it's not his problem, he's busy, and that I need to find my waitress." Dude needs an attitude adjustment for paying customers. All I was trying to do was pay so I could leave, after waiting forever as it was. I honestly thought about just leaving due to how incredibly rude this bartender was. After walking around and not seeing the bartender/server, I was about to just leave when I saw the main girl that was waiting on us and she came up and apologized for the wait & Said that she forgot about us (it happens, I used to be a server) and that we didn't have to tip her. We still tipped her $8, but was pretty disappointed that they didn't discount our meal or. A guy that was also helping wait on us came up and I explained what had happened with the bartender and he said he'd go get our check (didn't apologize). No one even apologized for the way we were talked to by the head bartender and that's what irked me the most and why I will not be coming back. He wasn't even busy. Their food is absolutely fantastic. If you want to sit in the bar area you will probably have good service, however.... Outside is a whole nother ball game. They are incredibly understaffed out there. We gave it three tries prior to writing this review. I really wish I could say something better, but their service outside is almost non existent. If you're coming with a large group, you will probably get served. If you're coming with just your significant other, they won't even look at you. It is really upsetting to see a place with such good food completely disregard smaller groups. I used to love this place back in the day until recently. One night, I came looking for food and I knew the kitchen closed in 40mins so I got a table and ordered my food. Everything was golden that night until my waitress assumed I wanted my check. I finished my food and had half a beer left to drink. The bar itself was open for another two hours. My food got cleared and my waitress never asked if I wanted anything else. I'm minding my own business, sipping my drink when she plops down my check. That caught me off guard because I wasn't ready to leave but I felt rushed out and I payed my tab and left. That was experience one. Experience two happened tonight. I see that it's pretty busy and I find a table and seat myself while I wait for my friend. The waitress doesn't greet me but just sets two alcohol menus on the table. Again, not that out of the normal but I continued with what I was doing. My friend informs me that she is running late and will be there in 45-50mins and I'm ok with it. The waitress comes over and she asks if I want anything to drink which I order a beer. She gives me my drink and NOT once did she come back to my table to ask if I wanted food or anything else. I was there for AN HOUR before my friend showed up and I was NOT offered food or anything. She ignored my table. My friend was running late which she didn't know about so I didn't mind at the time while I waited. I did get annoyed when she greeted the table next to me and off the bat asked them if they wanted drinks and then she gives them drinks and asks if they want food. Something she never did to me, and food was the reason why I was there. Again, I waited for my friend who showed up an hour and half after I was already there. The waitress comes and asks my friend if she wanted anything to drink which she did. She got her drink and the waitress left. NOT once did she come back and asks us if we wanted food or anything and at this time it wasn't that busy. My friend and I finished our drinks and decided to leave since we weren't being served. I don't want to play the race card but it's interesting that we were ignored and we were black while everyone else was being served and offered food. This place used to be a favorite spot for all of my fiends and I. Great food, used to be great service, but these last two experiences have left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

I'm hesitant to review this place because I love it so much. Or it's their patio I'm in love with. It's big and spacious and they allow dogs on Mondays and Tuesdays! The adorableness of the dogs interacting with each other gets me every time. I have yet to sit inside, but it seems nice. I'm an outside girl, and I'll be sitting outside as long as I possibly can into the fall. Unfortunately, there was only one working heat lamp (but they actually use them!) and it was near a table at the far end of the patio from where I was sitting. Lots of craft beers, and they even have a section of the "non-craft" beers on the menu. I've only had the burgers. It's okay, nothing absolutely fabulous, but I'd stay away from the special pub sauce - it's an icky mixture of mustard and ketchup. EW. read more

After a long but fun day in the city, we needed a place to unwind before heading back to suburbia. Upon walking in, the place was completely deserted except for a few people sitting at the bar watching a game. We sat at a table and were waited on almost immediately. Our waitress was overly nice (probably because she was so bored) and went over the menu with us. Since I'd already ate way too much food and drank way too much booze, all I ordered was the clam chowder and a soda. The clam chowder was some of the best that I've had in a long time. Sometimes you just get watery soup with a few clams and lots of potatoes, but GSP's was a thicker base with a sh*t ton of clams and potatoes. I had to add some salt and pepper though because it was under-seasoned. My husband ordered the blue cheese fondue and chips and I had a few nibbles of that. It was also really good, although he was only able to eat about half of it before he was full. GSP has a bunch of TV's on the walls behind the bar and an extensive beer and wine list. Although I didn't peruse the list, I did notice that the entire back page of the menu was devoted to booze. They also have a sign that they are an official Blackhawks bar. What a find! Its a Quasi Baltimore Ravens bar! If you're Wacko for Flacco and are the "Ray Lewis of your Lacrosse team," this is your spot! I am already planning my return! GSP is spot on with food, service, beer selection, price, tv ratio AND a killer patio scene! Its right in my neighborhood and I have a feeling this is a bar "where everyone knows your name." I had the $10 George Street Pub Salad. Delicious! I've actually never had a salad quite like it. The generous portion of greens and grilled chicken was lightly topped with pecans and a honey glaze with a yogurt vinaigrette on the side. The charred taste paired with a semi-sweet and sour dressing and nuts was yummy and very unique. The rest of the food orders were spot on. My two friends both ordered the pecan encrusted chicken fingers. They are definitely more battered and fried than pecan-crusted, but there was still a nutty sweet flavor and pecans present. My friend's steak sandwich was not overwhelming, but looked fantastic. Perfect for girls who like red meat. The waffle fries were very tasty. I haven't tried any of the Seafood dishes, but given GSP's clear ties to Baltimore and what I heard was a Maryland-based seafood distributor, I bet its better than average for Chicago. I guarantee if 20+ Marylanders gather anywhere, the Seafood has to be good. $4 Allagashes were much appreciated and I can't wait to come back for list of 15 fall ales coming soon. One thing and one thing alone brought me to GSP and that was the fact they had a patio. It was one of those rare days in the spring when us poor Chicagoans finally get a sunny, hot day thrown at us after an awful winter and all I cared about was to be someplace outside with the sun searing my skin and an ice cold Oberon to enjoy. After being promptly seated at a nice spot in the beer garden, I asked if there were any beers on special. Well wouldn't you know it! Oberon was on special for $4. "God, is that you?" We settled in and sipped our Oberons and decided to order a couple of things for the table. Strangely we decided on the jambalaya, the GSP burger and the Walleye. Random, I know. The Jambalaya was pretty dang good and the best part about this dish was the soaking goodness of cornbread placed amidst the pretty crazy array of seafood. The GSP burger was probably as big as my head and did a great job in making up for the calories I saved from the salad I ate at lunch. Now the walleye was another story. Pretty bland, tough and not taht intrguing. Wouldn't order that again! HOWEVER, we did ask if we could split the food and the waitress came out with separate plates for all of us! Now THAT is a class act! All in all, a pretty great find and, as long as the Oberon is served on the patio, there's a good chance you'll see me again! (Oh and p.s. This is a drastic change from the dumpy Union that was eye sore on George street. The inside is cozy and comfortable, and the giant patio in the back was given a make over that is causing me to dream about sunshine and cold beer. My husband and I stopped by opening weekend, and were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. The bacon wrapped chicken sandwich is delish! Another highlight was the blue cheese pub fondue w/ chips. The draft selection is pretty interesting and didn't disappoint. One miss: the breading on the fish and chips was too thick and greasy. George Street Pub is a one and out in my opinion. I tried the chicken fingers app and the burger main. If you want better chicken fingers go to Rocks in Lakeview. If you want a better burger go to Rocks in Lakeview, Kuma's or even Flub-A-Dub-Chub. I found the food at George Street to be entirely middling at best. If you live within a six-block radius and want to go drinking on a weekday evening, I'm sure it's quite alright but probably rarely, if ever, has any sort of scene. read more

The first word that comes to mind when I think of the George Street Pub is fun. And the second word that comes to mind is sad. I'm sad because I need a place like this in my neighborhood. This place is awesome and it's depressing that I live so far away. Our visit to the GSP came on a Friday night. I had just experienced one of those hell weeks that leaves you begging for a good pint of stout. The Guinness was poured perfectly and really hit the spot. We started out with a Chicken strip appetizer. The dish included six generously sized strips that came with a cup of freshly made Blue cheese sauce. The appetizer was wonderful. For my entree I went with the George Street ,cheddar burger. Not only was this burger huge, it was delicious. This 1/2 pound of delicious meat was covered with bacon, caramelized onions and chorizo. I really wasn't in the mood for a burger, but I would eat just about anything with Chorizo on it. Honestly, you could put ground Chorizo on a hockey puck and I would find it appetizing. Other than the great food and top notch service, there was another thing that really stood out about GSP. There were two managers (or the owners) on duty during our meal. They were both busting their asses to make sure that all the orders were sent out correctly and in a timely manor. They did this in a way that really helped the servers and cooks. I have been in eateries where the managers were condescending and downright mean, that was not the case at the GSP. The whole staff worked as a team to get the job done and that is rare these days. All and all, our experience at GSP was fabulous. Great food, wonderful service and a fun atmosphere earns the place two thumbs up in my book. I can't wait to go back. read more

No matter what item you choose whether it's a burger, chicken sandwich, or honestly anything on the menu you won't be disappointed. Meh. One of those places that's better than some, but just not nearly as good as it could be if the staff actually gave a shit. Was there for a Bears game which might have been part of the issue. Way too many jacked-up brah's celebrating "SUNDAY FUNDAY" and wallowing in the pathetic coolness they're convinced they inhabit. Just imagine the sound of your overweight Dad yelling at the tv when a professional athlete makes a split second error that your Dad couldn't have done successfully in a million years, and times it by 100. Oh, and which is lamer, the dude who wear Bears jersey's, or their girlfriends? Maybe it's the table of dudes with the "Sunday Funday" homemade T's... Service was decent. Nothing over the top. Attentive, fast, but not really doing anything special to make the visit memorable. I guess that's what you get at a "sports bar," "gastropub," or whatever the fuck terms people make up to categorize midwestern food done with a tad bit of flair. GSP burger was decent. Cooked properly, but, I mean, don't charge me $11 bucks for a greasy bun and a dish that took literally no creativity to conceive of. My favorite of the evening was the banana nut bread beer. Not nearly as sweet as it sounds, but beer purists might not want to touch it. Hmmm - I struggle on the exact star rating to give GSP, mostly because I've been twice and liked it both times, but the food was just meh. As far as bars go, I really like this place. It has an incredible beer menu, but it promises to change the menu on a weekly basis and I've yet to see that happen. Both times I've gone (granted, within 2 weeks of each other, so that must be worth something!) the menu has been dated as June 2-9. Yet, I went on June 14th and on the 24th and the menu was the same. when I ordered a beer from the list the waitress said they were out of it and pointed to the expired date on the menu. My thought is this - either don't promise to change a menu weekly (especially so blatantly as to print it on the top!) or provide up to date menus. Seems simple. I shouldn't have to guess what is actually available. Don't tempt me with a tasty description only to say "better luck next time". Onto the food. Oh, right, "meh". I got the Shrimp Cargo everyone has been raving about and thought that I've had better shrimp on airplanes. I wish I was kidding. The dish is so packed with butter, garlic, and some cheese concoction that you almost miss the shrimp. But, once you get one, prepare to be underwhelmed. However, the Jumbalaya well made up for what the cargo was lacking. Surprisingly, the shrimp in this dish didn't upset me at all. The flavors were well developed, and the cornbread at the bottom was delish. My only gripe was that they didn't serve extra cornbread on the side to sop up all the extra sauce. A recommended food item: the chips with bleu cheese sauce. However, the past two times we've ordered it, we've replace the chips with their waffle fries. Those things are amazing. And they pick up the sauce nicely. They should put that on the menu... All in, it's worth a try and I know I'll be back. Probably not for the food, but definitely for the beer and the ambiance (Did I mention the women's rest room is clean and nicely deocrated? Just ignore the fact you get hit in the butt with the door while washing your hands...). I just hope they get a few of the kinks worked out! read more

George's is my go-to for a relaxing beer after work and watching my hometown sports games. It's clean, has a vast beer selection, delicious food, a back patio, is reasonably priced, and best of all; it's never too crowded, even on game days. The last mentioned is key. GSP's geographically close competitors, most notably Kirkwood, is so packed on game days you need to fight like a gladiator finding his way out of a labyrinth to get a drink. I always hold the urge to use the restroom as long as I can on game days there, because the trek to the bathroom usually includes a spilt beer, some butt rubbing, a stiff-arm, a few jukes and a spin move. It's the worst. GSP ain't like dat. It's tucked away off the East end of George St. perpendicular to Halsted, isolated from similar establishments. It's not as mainstream as Kirkwood and provides patrons with a clear path to its servers and is less of an obstacle course when you need to go use the facilities. Close in proximity and close to my heart, George's will always serve as my bread and butter: Me - "Babe, where should we go tonight? I need a few beers and a shot of Fireball." The Lady Frand - "Yea me too. I dunno though, wanna try somewhere new?" Me - "Na, I'm beat. Let's just play it safe and close. Jorge's?" The Lady Frand - "Done." I've come here now 10 times, give or take one, mainly because of the convenient location. And the layout of the place is pretty good. Each time I've been disappointed and returned hoping it was a fluke or would improve. Nope. The service at this place is atrocious. Ask for a beer on the menu and they are out? That's a common occurrence. And, I understand that happens, but you should offer up something else instead of just staring at me blankly like an idiot. Every single time I've come here there are things spilled, long delays in drink/food delivery, wrong items delivered, etc. Then there's the food itself: the burgers are not good. The fish and chips is terrible. And the wings? Wow. I have never, ever seen worse and more nasty meat in chicken wings anywhere, ever. It's disgusting. The wings have twice come out room temp and the celery is room temp (wings should be hot, celery should be crisp). The sauce covering is heavy on some and nearly non-existent on others. And the way they walk by and slap down your food, you can tell they couldn't care less. There is zero concern here about whether or not you're happy. I feel like they rely solely on location. It's all so very disappointing because the location is great. But, I am finished. This place is horrible in both food and service and, for me, that double whammy is a deal breaker. I'll spend my money with people who earn it. Now I can only hope this place closes and someone with talent reopens it. read more

A friend and I decided on GSB because we had a deal from restaurant.com and they had a lot of variety on the menu. We get there and its a cool bar that is rather loud, but no people loud, music loud. For it to be the middle of the week, we were surprised because we had to yell to have our girl's night out. Soo fast forward, the waiter was fabulous and new, but we figured she could make some solid recommendations. Ordered the calamari - not so great, it was like fish sticks. My friend had the walley and I had the salmon. I don't believe she was that thrilled, and the sauce on my salmon made it more tasty then it should have been. Maybe.. just maybe, I should stick to chicken, fries, and dips.. People usually can hit those dead on. On the flip side, I'd go back for drinks because the beer menu is expansive AND they have fab specials on Absolut if you like that. Would I go out of my way to go back, probably not. read more

This is a fine place for a pint. I only stopped in for a drink, so I can't comment on the food. What I can speak on though, is the great beer selection and friendly staff. It was hot and humid when we stopped in for a refreshment. Besides one big floor fan, this place was sweltering inside. The staff all seemed to be feeling the heat, and yet, every single one of them smiled as we walked by. They all seemed genuinely happy to be there. Props to people who can hold a positive attitude and smile, even when its hot out! The patio is really nice, and a great place to sit with friends for a few beverages. I never went to the Union when it was here so I can't compare George Street Pub to that. But overall GSP is just ok. If you're looking for a place that has an apple pie shot then you've found the right spot. As far as their beer menu, it's a bit above average but about what you'd expect to find at most new places these days. The food menu has a ton of options but nothing really jumped out at me... This place is the platonic ideal of the nice corner bar and grill. I used to live nearby and it combined a good beer list, a very good chance of getting a seat whenever you came, music that you didn't need to shout over, and a TV with whatever sporting event was the most pressing for the evening along with a patio that is excellent for hanging out with friends during the summer hours. I also enjoyed the food, which was standard burger and fry fare but done with enough care and originality that you weren't under the impression somebody back there was just pulling things from the freezer and chucking them straight into the deep fryer. I wouldn't bring a friend from out of town here, but if I'm trying to have a relaxed night or catch up with a friend in town, you can't do better than this. read more

This place is seriously a hidden gem! I've never had bad food here, ever. Sometimes you get a slow server, but hey what can you do? The patio is a good size, allows dogs at certain times, and is a great place to hang out when the weather is nice. The drinks are decently priced and they can have some pretty good specials. They also have a pretty good list of craft beer. They get pretty packed at night, especially when the weather isn't good and the patio isn't open, but no big deal. My favorite menu items: -Filet sliders - OMG....so good. The meat is great and is always cooked right. The horseradish spread comes on the side (as do the onions) and is so yummy. It's good to dip your waffle fries in, also. -Mussels - holy cow....I literally crave these and the sliders all the time. These mussels come in an amazing sauce and with 4 pieces of bread.
