I had been to a lot of places during my stay in New York but this is my first review of anywhere I have been because it will stick in my head for the WRONG REASONS! I was around the Financial District and checked my Yelp app to see what diner type places were around for some lunch. George's was the closet and 3 out of 5 I thought well it should be grand! As per the other reviews the staff were not overly friendly. To be honest I welcomed this, being from Dublin, Ireland I am not a fan of the American style customer service. It is disingenuous and obviously people are looking for tips. But the girl who served us did not look happy at all. If she is like that all the time I am sure she is not tipped too well! She took out order and we were waiting about 10 minutes and we still had not received our Coke's - not what we had come to expect from the service we had received in other places and there was no sign of her and we were thirsty!! We did notice some dirty cutlery on the floor under the table next to us and the floor did not look terribly clean. In fairness the rest of the place did look clean enough. The place was full with people - it was lunch time on a Friday, so to be expected. There were 2 girls dining at the table beside us and all of a sudden one of the girls screamed like she was being stabbed in the stomach by goblin and jumped out of her chair screaming and ran away from the table. Everyone looked mightily confused as did we. What the hell was this nutter screaming at??? OMG...... A cockroach! Climbing around her table. She said it fell on top of her and perhaps into her food. One of the kitchen staff came out and got rid of it. IE.. Picked it up with a napkin. Needless to say we got up and swiftly ran out of the place. If there are cockroach's in the dining area God knows what is in the bloody kitchen!!!!! This was the first and last cockroach I had seen during my week in the Big Apple...... Urgh.... Never got to taste the food but after that I didn't really want to!!! read more

Came to George's after my race yesterday for a post-run meal. Their brunch didn't start until 11am and we were starving so we opted just for the regular breakfast. It was pretty packed there but luckily we grabbed a seat. Inside is your average diner food and atmosphere. The tables were veryyy close together and I felt like I was on top of other couples sitting next to us. (We sat on the lower level.) After browsing the menu a bit we ordered a simple meal -- eggs over easy with whole wheat toast. Food was okay, nothing special. They gave us a pretty small amount of hash browns compared to the usual diner's portions. And they charged me $1.95 for coffee and my friend $2.95 for tea. All in all, it was meh. Possibly the worst diner in New York. This place is truly disgusting. Even the worst restaurants can usually put together an edible club sandwich, but not George's. The turkey had the consistency of cotton and the bacon was bitter. Yes, bitter. Maybe it was just rancid, or maybe it was contaminated with grill degreaser. It doesn't bear thinking about. My boyfriend pronounced the onion rings the worst he's ever tasted. Fair point, but at least they were better than the sandwich. read more

George's is an excellent greasy spoon in my neighborhood. Family owned since the 50's. Original building had a split in it one day and they had to demo it. But a year later they rebuilt! HUGE menu!! Hungry, hung over & too cold to travel outside Financial District's vicinity so where do we go instead?? Somewhere within proximity to Wall St. that served brunch. We ended up at George's and with all diners alike, it's fast, low maintenance and not that great of a quality. (Rarity you'll find a high end diner .. but I'm sure they are out there!) I got the Spinach Florentine Eggs Benedicte...topped with feta cheese. The potatoes were quite bland and starchy. Not crisp enough. This place gets an extra star for not over cooking the eggs.. the yolk was still runny. The feta didn't go well with the spinach .. it left a lingering sour taste in my mouth. And usually I am all about the cheese. I was not feeling feta at all that day. On a pleasant side note, free coffee refills was a plus. Half a dozen cup later... my friend had to get off the train to walk to Grand Central to unnerve herself. Jitters do happen ladies & gents. You know if I really wanted to try, I am pretty sure I am able to make eggs benedicte 10x the quality & taste. Ordered breakfast via seamless... Eggs florentine. Showed up late and it was not good at all. I know poached eggs don't travel so well but they were so incredibly overdone it was gross. Home fries had no flavor at all... Their matzoh ball soup is good... I will stick to that next time. read more

This place has good, solid diner food and great service. They were very attentive to see if my coffee needed refilling. The Spanish omelet was really hearty and came with delicious hash brown-ish potatoes and buttered toast. The coffee was the perfect coffee for first thing in the morning. Quick service and a nice looking menu which after a long plane ride and a lot of walking excited me. The food came pretty quickly but it sausages in the omelet were pretty cool,not sure if they weren't cooked long enough or it sat for a bit but between that, bland jam and the food overall being kind of bland I was disappointed. edit: The owner replied to this review, sadly I was visiting NY so I can't give it another try. I really wanted to like this diner because the waitress was so great! The veggie burger I had was really tasty, and I appreciated that they made it fresh from actual vegetables rather than the veggie puck that a lot of diners serve. And if I were writing the review based only on my own experience, this review would say 4.5 stars for NY diner. However, my two companions, who both had meat products (one person a burger, the other bacon) have been sick all day from run-of-the-mill food poisoning. This is a good place to have a decent breakfast. The host and waitress were very friendly, and our breakfast was delicious. I always liked working in the downtown/Financial District area, sometimes the food leaves something to be desired. George's is a bright spot because it's kind of the opposite of what Forrest Gump's box of chocolates was: you always know what you are going to get. They tout themselves as a cafe, let's be fair: it's a diner. But a good one at that, with some off the wall stuff (like croissant french toast - that I have yet to try but man it sounds good) and your run of the mill eggs, burgers and shakes. You pay NY prices but you do get a lot of food, but of course it's the FiDi so there's a premium. It's off the beaten path but if you want diner food, trust me, the hike there is worth it. (PS For Breakfast-at-lunch, be sure to request home fries. They have them, but you'll get reg fries. Boo when I wanted home fries!) read more

This was pretty close to our hotel in the Financial District, and since it was a Sunday morning, our options were pretty limited for anything within walking distance. Got my fam and I some bagels here. Typical bagels, not the world-renowned NY bagels. If this were anywhere else, they'd pass fine but compared to what NY is known for, these are just average. No problem with the place, they provided quick and efficient service. But not a stand-out joint by any means. They'll do the trick when you're in a hunger bind. read more

Decided to have lunch here with the boss one day. Actually, the boss decided that we were to lunch here. From the outside, this place looked pretty good and had outdoor seating. And so we walked in and waited 2 minutes to be seated. The place was packed with an eclectic mix of tourists and fellow wall street peeps. We were seated at this table sandwiched in between tables occupied by burly dudes in suits. It was pretty tight. But the guys sitting next to me and I had it figured out. Our movements became automatically in sync with each other so we never touched. The place is called George's Restaurant, George's Diner would have been more appropriate. I got the turkey burger, no fries, just the sandwich. I'm a snob when it comes to fries. If I am to consume all those calories, it better be good. The boss got the Club. My burger was sad looking. It consisted of a bun that wasn't even toasted, a dry thin little patty and 2 onion rings. I should have gone to McDonald's. And yes, it tasted as sad as it looked. As for the service, my water glass stayed empty and was never filled. And my boss had to get up to get the waiter's attention so we can pay and leave. The Wall Street vicinity needs better restaurants. It really does. read more

This is a perfect spot for breakfast if you're looking for your traditional American meal of eggs, waffles, pancakes, etc. They have such wide varieties of options in the menu (a little overwhelming) but that means you have a lot of choices to choose from if something doesn't float your boat. Do not order from this place. I ordered from here off GrubHub, food was late, called 15 minutes after the delivery time and they said it would be there any second. Gave another call when it was 20 minutes late and the woman said it would be there any second again. I had enough of the run around and called GrubHub and this place told them it had been confirmed in error and it hadn't even left yet! Hiya. The major negatives for us were that the Greek salad had anchovies- definitely not traditional or expected for a Greek salad! Also this was not listed as an ingredient on the menu. My friend had to send her salad back and ask for one without fish and the staff were not friendly or apologetic. While we were there we also saw another table send back their salad. Other negatives were that we did not like that the tip was automatically added to the bill so the customer is given no option. Took a combined total of 23 minutes for my food to get here, which is actually pretty nice considering how places that are 2-3 blocks away from me take the same amount of time. Paid the delivery guy a $5 and 11 singles and he didn't complain about it (Thank goodness). The portions are HUGE. I was expecting the 8 oz. burger and the bun to be tiny but it was a regular size burger. A good amount of fries. Not a fan of tomatoes but for some reason, i actually enjoyed eating them. Again, the fries are average, but there was a lot of them. Asked for mayo that i thought was gonna put on the burger but it was served in a tiny cup. Was disappointed at first but then i realized that it goes well with fries. There's a bit of cole slaw (?) combined with the mayo i think, which makes the taste even better. The Battery Park Area seems to be a no-man's land for food on weekends. Looking for a Saturday breakfast while downtown, we found ourselves at George's. The place was clean enough and we were hungry enough and so we decided to start. The staff that greeted us was very OK and a little too brusque for my taste. The food was not much of an improvement on that start. Starting with coffee, which was weak, we were underwhelmed. I made the rare move to get pancakes (If you don't know me, pancakes are something of an obsession), while my fiancee decided to go with the more straight ahead poached eggs. The eggs were OK but, the pancakes were another story entirely. When I want pancakes, I am looking for the holy grail. I am looking for moist but fluffy, substantial while being light - oh, and chocolate, blueberry and some kind of wheat option would be nice. There's nothing worse to me than wasted calories. These pancakes were nothing but wasted calories. They were dry and flavorless, kind of cardboard circles with the occasional walnut and raisin. There was nothing you could do to make them edible. No amount of syrup or that pasty apple concoction they were topped with seemed to make a difference. George, you have committed a high-calorie crime and your staff is pretty nasty too. read more

By now I've had brunch at George's about 5 times. After reading the previous reviews I'm surprised at all the bad experiences since all I've encountered was impeccable, quick service (mostly pertaining to beverage/coffee refills and getting my food), friendly staff, and deliciously prepared food at a fair price. The best thing about this place are the Sunday brunch specials which begin around 11:30am. You have to try the huevos rancheros benedict and dulce de leche pancakes. George's has the look and feel of a typical diner, and yes the tables are all placed close together, but aren't people used to that in NYC by now? If you feel to cramped the waitress can re-sit you upstairs where you can feel more comfortable (+ you get free cotton candy). read more

Great place for breakfast or traditional diner fare. Nicer inside that most NY diners... kind of cute. Walking distance from WTC Ground Central and Century 21 shopping center. Got their Belgian Waffle with fresh strawberries---YUM and the Eggs with Cornbeef Hash--again YUM. And I am a picky cornbeef hash person.
