We had breakfast here on Saturday, April 21st on our first trip to NYC. We stayed at the Courtyard by Marriot a block away and didn't want to travel too far to grab a bite to eat. The breakfast was very good, I had the eggs, home fries and bacon. My husband had the pancakes. All were delicious and our server was very friendly. The restaurant was clean and cozy. My husband was not a fan of the tables so close together that you feel like your having breakfast with strangers but it didn't really bother me too much. We just stayed within our group of 4 (as did everyone else) and it worked out fine. Staff were very busy but our server never forgot about us as far as refills or requests except for the only mishap was the person who sat us took our drink order and my son's girlfriend asked for a cappuccino and a glass of water and we received everything but the cappuccino. She was disappointed but it wasn't on the bill either so we figured he just didn't hear her. When we return to NYC, we will definitely return to George's. read more

Great deals, for breakfast to eat in or take out. Take out/Delivery before 1030am are killer prices at like $2.50 for an egg sandwich and eating in isn't bad either for a full egg, potatoes etc for $6 bucks. read more

Had a classic old fashion hamburger with salad on it. It took me back to the 80's. Freshly cooked beef on a fresh bun. Would go back for another. Friendly service by the young waiter. If you have read my reviews, you know I love diners. I love their simplicity, convenience and the fact that I can order breakfast any time of the day. Woohoo! George's is the only good diner on the west side of downtown located on Rector and Greenwich streets. This is my weekend hangover cure now that we moved away from Roxy's on John street. Service is fast and the food is good. If you want death by sweet for breakfast, they have a french toast croissant with chantilly cream (my friend loved it, but way too sweet for me). I love the more standard fare of eggs, egg sandwiches, waffles, etc. But, like any good diner, they have a menu with about a million different things on there. I never will understand why some diners offer leg of lamb - like I would ever order something like that at a diner? The service is good, but not overly courteous, and the prices are average for a typical city diner. If you live downtown in the Battery Park area, this is definitely worth a try. read more

I ordered from here several times and the food is okay. Recently I ordered an omelette, took a bite and spit out a staple that was scrambled In there. I called the restaurant to notify them so that they could be more careful (not even to ask for my money back) but the "Manager" accepted no responsibility because as he put it, "I don't have any staples in my kitchen" so he didn't feel the need to apologize at all. I certainly didn't pop a staple into my mouth so I know it came from the restaurant... In the end It isn't worth fighting about this because shit happens... but I had to express how much I hate horrible customer service. read more

It is pretty amazing that this restaurant has been in business since 1950. Maybe times have changed but I have not been to such a poor service restaurant in some time. When you enter the place you are not able to choose where you can sit. Then when you are seated, you are asked to move to another table. The hamburgers and many other menu items are way overpriced. I also get any silverware to eat my fries despite assurances from the waiter. You have alot of rude busboys running around but not doing much except putting out customers. They have no customer service skills and act like customers are a hindrance to them. I would get rid of the present staff and start over. I would not eat here again. If you do eat here and get similar poor service, vote with your pocketbook and don't leave a tip. read more

This restaurant would receive more stars from me if the service wasn't so horrendous. I think it's safe to say that our waitress was the worst I've ever had in the history of ever. It took her 20 minutes to even acknowledge us. I had to ask the hostess to go get her because we were ready to order our drinks and food. She never once checked on us to see how our food was. If she did she would have found out that some of our order was wrong and that we needed more syrup and napkins. We had separate checks in our party. So after my friend called for her three times as she was walking away to ask for our bills she stopped across the restaurant and just stared at us. I guess she wanted us to scream across the building for what we needed from her. The food was mediocre. The best part was the giant glass of mimosa you get for 5 bucks. There is a limit to how long you can be here. 1 1/2 hrs. Not sure if this time include the time you have to wait for your terrible server to get things done. Save yourself the money and trouble and go to McDonalds. read more

My husband and I recently spent a week in NYC, and we ate breakfast at George's every day. It's a small, family-owned cafe. They have an upstairs, but we never went up. Unless the upstairs has larger tables, I wouldn't recommend this place to a large family as space is limited. They food was excellent, though, and we got a lot. Neither of us needed to eat again until dinner. The staff was always friendly. I'll definitely go back when I'm in the city next time. read more

This place used to be a solid, middle of the ground place, which I appreciated for its consistency. I ordered from here a month ago and it seemed like it had taken a turn for the worse, but I gave it another chance. There were 4 of us, we ordered $80 worth of food, and not a single item was anything more than barely edible. I've been ordering here for 3 years and it's finally come to a halt. The sandwiches are dried and generic, the burgers are rubbery and obviously the spawn of a frozen patty thrown off a piece of wax paper onto a flattop, the fries are old fries thrown in last week's oil, the nachos are stale chips with a small amount of toppings and soft/warm lettuce being the featured star, the chicken nuggets are baked cardboard science project backdrops, the desserts are baked a while ago and made of all of the FDA newly approved synthetic ingredients. I would have never suggested that tourists come here, because it was nothing special. but it's now not even worth picking up under any circumstances. read more

Not a great experience. They put us at the table next to the kitchen, which was very noisy, and did not move us when another table became available. Service was not great, asked for water twice but was never brought to the table. I felt like every time I asked for something (cream for my coffee, water) my server reacted as if it was a burden. I was standing outside looking at the menu when someone came out & said "best burgers in the world!" That was all i needed. I went in & saw there wasn't much room for the stroller. I folded it up, left it by the door & had to go upstairs with my toddler to eat. Someone sat the same time I did. A small group came in shortly after. I had to ask for a menu when i saw the group getting theirs. Someone who sat with the guy who came in the sane time as me told the waiter he messed up by making me have to ask for a menu & my dessert was now o.k. the waiter. I laughed & said thank you. I ordered a cheeseburger, medium, with seasoned fries, a glass of red sangria & an Apple juice. The sangria was surprisingly good for a diner. The fries were lightly seasoned but were good. The one onion ring on the plate was cold, as if they didn't cook long enough from coming out the freezer. The burger, though thick, was well done & was average for a diner burger. My waiter never checked on me. I had to call for him when I needed a small plate for the baby, extra napkins & dessert- Whether or not that guy bought my dessert as he stated. Now, it did get crowded rather quickly & people didn't dawdle after eating, but still, he could have checked at least once. I ended up ordering the strawberry cheesecake & it good!! Turns out the guy was the manager or owner & he kept his word, I was not charged for dessert! That's why i gave 3 stars instead of 2. Whole family went there for breakfast at night. We all had pancakes. They must have been short on wait staff. Our waiter was very nice. He took our order and didn't see him again until he brought the order out. 5 plates of pancakes but no drinks, syrup or anything else. After a few minutes our order started to materialise. A general let down to have your hot food sitting in front of you but no way to enjoy it properly. Order was shorted but eventually corrected. Final bill seemed expensive for pancakes. read more

My fiancee and I made an order on a Friday night. We wanted the grilled chicken platter and the pepper turkey platter. We both wanted broccoli and mashed potatoes. The food was pretty fresh and arrived without too much delay. However, they replaced both mashed potatoes with baked potatoes, and there wasn't a hint of pepper on my turkey. I was in the mood for something not bland, and definitely would not have ordered plain turkey. My fiancee loves mashed potatoes, and she was definitely looking forward to that. I can't see this being a situation where they ran out of mashed potatoes or pepper. We were horribly disappointed, and they obviously didn't give a crap. read more

Matzoh ball soup is always the menu here (the matzoh balls are the big, soft types, rather than the dense hard ones), and they've never messed up my burger orders (the patties are cooked enough to be safe, but are still juicy). Came here for breakfast with the wife. We were staying in a hotel around the corner and figured we'd give this place a shot. We were not impressed. It was a long wait to get a table and the food wasn't up to par. Home fries were raw and eggs were bland. Didn't even have salt or ketchup at our table to drown out the taste or lack of taste. Service wasn't good, which is usually the case in most NYC establishments. The place was busy so I'll give them that, but we were ignored and I had to get up an chase someone down for my check. My mom, sister, and I went to George's for breakfast on Mother's Day. I thoroughly enjoyed my croissant French toast; my sister enjoyed her breakfast sandwich, and my mom said her eggs Benedict with avocado was one of the best she'd ever had. As my 1st review on yelp, it's not a good one. I wanted some soup and saw this place around the block. I think it's difficult to screw up chicken noodle soup but it can be done. The soup was bland with more oily spots than noodles. The only thing that kept this review from being 1 star is that the soup was scalding hot, not cold. read more

I took a group to George's for the 2nd year in a row after we ran the Tunnel to Towers race in lower Manhattan. It's a perfect place to bring a group (last year we had 6 with us, this year 5 in our group) and get delicious, generous portions of your favorite breakfast foods. We had french toast, banana pancakes, chocolate chip pancakes, eggs, bacon etc. All was good, service was attentive and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. Portions were big!
