I am so sad to admit that I don't think any establishment has failed as miserably as Geraldine's. My really good friend hosted a dinner/mini networking mixer that started at six. There were barely any people there other than our group and the entire dining hall was basically empty. My fiancé and I were ready to order food and drinks from their happy hour menu by 6:10 and there was no process in place what so ever so we went over to the bar to place our order. Believe it or not it took them until 6:19 to finally get our attention and so we let the host order before us. We still wanted to make the happy hour order before 6:30 and so I told the Bartender it would be great if he could get us next. At 6:28 when we were trying to place our orders, he says I will need to run over to my manager and see if I can take your order for happy hour food. We were literally shocked because we couldn't understand what that meant. It was clearly written in their menus and on their website that happy hour runs until 6:30 daily. When he came back, he told us we are only able to order the happy hour bites on the bottom half of the menu and not the three course prefix happy hour on the top half. There was no explanation offered and no compassion or apologies around why that was happening. He basically just smiled and said yeah it is what it is. So in the moment because we were so short of time, we ended up ordering one of each items from the second half of the menu and it was an absolute disaster. I run a happy hour account on socials and can confidently say this isn't something I would ever recommend to my followers. From the amount of time, it took to finally get someone's attention to order a meal, to the attitude and the bait and switch with their offerings despite them being written in black-and-white on their menu and website was an absolutely horrible experience. Does dinner/networking mixer give these guys a ton of business that they normally wouldn't have had and they literally treated everybody like they were doing us a favor by letting us be there. Honest caveat: I was here not for a customary sit down meal, but a happy hour. Fine dining has its own standards; you're supposed to get what you pay for otherwise why pay for it? Food: Decent, not up to par for the price. While the names of the dishes are elevated, the food quality and presentation are not. Service: Borderline horrendous. We were at the bar at 6 waiting our turn to order food from the two staff that seemed to be both tending bar for the entire establishment and waiting on bar customers for food and drinks. The happy hour menu ended at 6:30, and one of the two casually sauntered over at 6:25. He told us the happy hour pre fixe was only available until 6:15 (not anywhere on the menu) and told us he'd have to ask the kitchen if we could order the rest of the happy hour. He then casually walked over to the kitchen and casually back, informing us that we were graced to be able to order off the other 5 dishes. He chuckled two separate times at our frustration at waiting and experiencing this lack of communication and service. Actually laughed at customers! Ambiance is fine, nothing special. Our party of four came here on a Sunday in April to enjoy some live music during brunch. We had a reservation but were told our table wasn't ready upon check-in. After about 15 minutes we inquired again and the hostess said it'd still be about 10 minutes. We didn't have time to wait so their solution was to seat us in what was referred to as the "overflow room" behind the bar. Even then the staff apparently was so busy that the manager ended up coming over. We ordered immediately and told her half of our party needed to leave for the airport by a certain time. She assured us she understood and that she was on it. Due to the wait, she treated us an order of biscuits and jam. Our coffee and water was served in a decent amount of time. The complimentary biscuits came out soon after. They were nothing special but were finished off quickly since we were hungry. The manager came over to check on us and we asked for more coffee. Another employee came over with the refill. We tried to give him our plates to clear off the table and were completely dismissed. My friend was literally holding her plate out for him to take and he just straight up walked away. After that the manager and staff pretty much ghosted our table. We needed water refills and couldn't flag anyone down. I could see the water station so I got up and brought a carafe to our table. I cleared off the plates and empty milk saucers and placed them on a tray that had been left on a nearby table. We were prepared to ask for our food to go and had our card out to pay on the chance the manager came back to the table to explain why it was taking so long. She never returned. After waiting for nearly an hour since we ordered and with no help in sight, we made the decision to go. The manager saw us get up to leave. She was standing in the gally way to the kitchen. My friend made eye contact with her from across the room. And nothing. She knew she messed up and didn't have the nerve to apologize. We said something to the hostess on the way out and she barely mumbled an apology. On the elevator ride down to the lobby, we chatted with a couple who seemed to enjoy their brunch at the bar with zero issues. We told them they were lucky. They apologized for our misfortune. I am beyond shocked with this "dining" experience and completely regret ignoring all the red flags before we even placed our order. Upon returning to our wonderful hotel, Hotel ZaZa, we shared our disastrous experience with the front desk staff. Their jaws were on the floor and they were so apologetic for something that clearly wasn't their fault. To be clear, our hotel did not recommend we go here. Our group wanted to experience Rainey Street and some live music at Geraldine's since it "draws its inspiration from the vibrant spirit of Austin--where live music, bold flavors, and an unapologetic sense of creativity come together." Seems they definitely have the unapologetic part down. read more

One of my friends later joined me at Geraldine's. Geraldine's menu blends modern Mexican flavors with Southern influences. Geraldine's is a balanced dining experiences on Rainey Street...a convergence of high-quality food, live music, and breathtaking panoramic views from Hotel Van Zandt. My server, Taylor, almost immediately appeared at my table offering water. He conveyed that the Al Pastor was the most popular menu item, so I decided order it along with some prosecco. The Al Pastor literally melted in my mouth with an explosion of flavor in every bite. It was so enjoyable eat. Fun and vibey restaurant Inside the Hetel Van Zant. I came for bunch with girlfriends. We had reservations for 12;30 and were seated right away. The atmosphere was driven by a DJ with a saxophone accompanist. Possibly a bit cheesy, but still fun. The place was hopping and quite energetic when we arrived. We ordered the French 76 cocktail, which we all enjoyed, and our meals: the chilaquilles and the pork carnitas torte. All delicious. This place is fun and the food is good. I really wanted to love Geraldine's because I have been wanting to try it for a long time. The food was pretty good. I ordered the burger and I enjoyed it, but unfortunately, my visit was tarnished by the service. Our server didn't communicate well. We did have a larger group so we expected some wait time, but four of us ordered the frozen drink and 20 minutes later were told that the frozen drink machine wasn't working well and to give it a few more minutes. Ten minutes later we were told that it wasn't working at all. That was fine, but let us know sooner and we could've chosen something else. Another time we asked for mustard, she brought honey mustard. We politely mentioned it was honey mustard and she responded "well, that's what we have" and walked away. When you're paying $20 for a burger, you don't think it'll come with a side of sass. This continued to happen throughout the meal. Not sure we'll be back. read more

The food is okay, but not nearly as elevated in quality or presentation as the menu or prices would suggest. The service though is a disaster. The host left us standing by the host stand for 5 minutes while he joked with the wait staff, then came over and asked if we could sit at the bar even though the restaurant No hello, no please, no thank you, didn't even guide us towards the bar. Then we sat at the bar for 15 mins waiting for someone to take our orders. The ambiance is good in that restaurant does look beautiful. Went for a special night out to celebrate a wedding anniversary. The environment was really spectacular. Had a round of appetizers, main courses and cocktails. Wonderful flavor and all of the dishes. Really unique and complex flavor profiles. One of the best pieces of fish I've ever had, and it was complimented by a simple bean purée and salsa that really pushed it over the top. The chocolate tamale dessert was simple, but served with two elegant sides that complemented the ganache with a nice touch of sweetness. Would recommend to anyone who wanted a great evening out. It's a little more upscale than nearby restaurants so definitely put on a nice outfit if you're coming here. Our waiter was really nice & service was pretty quick. For food- Everything here is made to share so i recommend ordering about 2-3 dishes per person. The biscuits are a must!! They were so so good. I also really enjoyed the scallops and the buttermilk chess pie. I don't eat meat but my friends raved about the Korean fried chicken. We also tried the two pasta dishes - creste di gallo pasta & the Cacio e pepe, I prefer the latter. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the desert called arroz con leche. Wow, what a let down! We have been coming to Austin for many years, staying at our favorite hotel, which houses what used to be an absolutely amazing restaurant. Unfortunately, they completely revamped the restaurant without changing the name. So instead of having delicious southern barbecue style food, it is now some weird style of upscale Mexican. I'd love to say that the service made up for it, but our server was horrific. When I asked if I could substitute the beans for potatoes, she told me they don't serve potatoes. When I pointed out potatoes on the menu, she went to talk with the chef, and came back and told me that they don't alter dishes. We got up and left. The vibe, ambiance, food...amazing. All plates are meant to be shared. Our server recommended two plates per person, but we ordered four plates (plus a dessert) for 3, and it was more than enough food for us. The Brussels sprouts were amazing! The fried green tomatoes were amazing! The dessert was amazing!! The pasta and fried chicken we ordered were also really good, but the Brussels sprouts and fried green tomatoes seemed more unique to other versions I've had before. Valet is $14. They also valet for the hotel, so we actually had to wait about 10min for the valets to reappear to get our car. Across the street from Electric Shuffleboard. Currently lots of construction going on nearby, so didn't see any quick/easy street parking options, and didn't notice other parking garages nearby (though I'm sure there must be some). My husband loved his steak but the scrambled eggs were a bit mushy for his taste, make sure to ask for well done if you don't like runny scrambled eggs, but he loved the potatoes and steak! It's a beautiful restaurant with rooftop seating. We chose to hang at the bar. It was early and quiet. This was nice because we had a fabulous bartender that sat and talked to us. He was a native local (most people are transplants) so he was able to give us advice on the best spots to visit. He was fabulous and he made us some wonderful drinks. She was so helpful and always came to check up on us + their food is actually pretty good, but I would say to be careful about what you order. I ordered their quesadillas and was really disappointed, but I tried my friend's spicy chicken sandwich and couldn't stop asking for more bites. + vibe! It's a pretty nice restaurant and before we left, a few jazz artists actually got up on stage to liven up the mood + get their sticky bread. Thank me later. It's phenomenal. Cons: + their drinks are not good. At all. Look at the espresso martini I ordered and ask yourself if that's a proper espresso martini. No foam and it was incredibly bitter. + the menu isn't that....appetizing? I really found myself settling for a particular menu item because I wasn't a fan of their choices. + prices. We basically ordered the entire dinner menu (no shame in our game!) and it was delicious! Every single dish! Would highly recommend: - Crispy potatoes - Brussels sprouts - hamachi crudo - short ribs - hanger steak - gulf shrimp - half chicken The biscuits were a debate, I loved them with the maple butter however my colleagues did not love as much and thought they were dry. And the redfish was a disappointment. It was covered in a peppery sauce with wannabe thai curry (I would've gone to a true thai restaurant if I wanted curry!) Geraldine's was fantastic. Went there for Saturday brunch. The restaurant is inside of Hotel Van Zandt near Rainey Street downtown. You know it is fancy when you have to take an elevator to get to it LOL. Exit the elevator and see a great view of the bar and seating area. The hostess was very pleasant. There is live music on Saturdays between 11:30am and 1:00pm. Good music, good drinks and good music. It gets no better than that. I enjoyed a cappuccino while others in my party drank a Bloody Mary and a drink with peanut butter whiskey and banana liquer. Very delicious. The service was a bit slower than I like but was nit bad. Maybe an understaffed issue. I ate a simple meal: eggs any style with bacon and toast. Others ate chicken sandwiches. All were tasty. Wonderful jazz brunch. Geraldine's is located in Hotel Van Zandt. Modern rustic decor. We were seated a step up from main floor but still had a good view of the band. The band was cheerful and the music was loud enough to hear but still light enough to enjoy table conversation. Our server Tai was a delight. She was professional, helpful and friendly. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting her and her recommendations. I started with a French 76, a twist on the traditional French 75. (tito's vodka / campo viejo cava / lemon juice) And our table shared the mini cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting. They were amazing; tender, warm and sticky sweet on the bottoms; cooked in a cast iron pan. I also ordered the Lox on Toast (rye toast/ whipped cream cheese/Scottish smoked salmon/ capers/red onions) and a perfectly cooked poached egg! Everything was delicious and we had a great time. Geraldine's was a recommendation from a coworker and the menu looked intriguing so I made a reservation. It was extremely early, about 5:30pm since they're so close to the convention center. I think I was one of three tables at that time. My waiter was great. He was friendly, helpful, and just a pleasure. I had the snap peas salad, as his recommendation, and it was just what I needed. After two days of brisket, I needed veggies. It was fresh, light, and full of flavor. For my main, I had the uni butter cacio e pepe, which was good. I had the yuzu twinkies for my dessert, and I was kind of disappointed by it. The twinkies were very stiff and dense, not really what I was expecting. My issue was the portion sizes, which were quite small for the price that they were charging. I guess that's what happens when you're also at a hotel restaurant. My meal was good, but I don't think I'd call it a must-try restaurant in Austin. I can see it being a very solid option if you're staying in the hotel or in the area and don't want to venture far. But I do think venturing out is worth it, as the Austin food scene is just so good. read more

Fourth floor of the trendy Hotel Van Zandt in the Rainy St area. Their small plates are impressive. Excellent cocktails and wine list. We saw the Dan Radin show and he rocks out on a cello. I wouldn't say that the food wow'd me but it was good. The cocktail menu is great, I tried 3 different tequila cocktails and all were lovely. Food was small portions with regular plate prices, so we each ordered several dishes and shared them like tapas. We had the ceasar salad, smoked carrots, grilled cauliflower, beet salad, crispy pork, birria wontons, and cacio e pepe. Everyone had their favorites, but the standouts were the pork and pasta. Drinks were excellent, which was obvious because we had 3 rounds. Everyone had Old Fashions while I had the Pomme et Pappilo, which was rosemary, butterfly peaflower, Fuji apple infused Tito's, lychee, Rose, lemon, and Peychuad bitters. This place is a hidden gem. I ordered the steak omelette and my wife ordered the steak and eggs with chimichurri sauce and potatoes. Both were great. The omelette was super light and fluffy and the presentation was more than I expected. The chimichurri steak was also delicious and tender. We also ordered Cinnamon rolls which were to die for. It was rich, creamy, and perfect. We loved it so much. We ordered cinnamon rolls to go. Will definitely come back here again. Our server was phenomenal. The place was clean and organized. read more
