We love it here! If you're in the mood for a treat, this is a fun place to go. It's been great for date nights, bringing kids to for a special occasion, or just for fun. I love how classic it is. Although I've been working in Salem probably as long as this restaurant has been open (30+ years), I don't think I had been here for lunch. A very nice surprise! Met some other business people for lunch and had a delicious curried chicken salad. Generous, well-seasoned and with a nice compliment of crackers. I and my lunch companions didn't have enough room for dessert (despite staring at some goregous offerings for the hour). So I succumbed and took a piece of lemon cake home for later. Despite the fact I forgot it in the car for a day, it was still outstanding ... moist, lemony and layered tender cake with a creamy frosting. And I'm really picky about cake! Overall, recommended. You have never seen a cake selection like this. They are my absolute favorite sweet treat spot here in Salem. I think they have a minimum of 25+ cake varieties. Remember that yellow cake with chocolate frosting your mom used to make when you were little? the out of the box kind? Well imagine that..elevated. They call it after school cake.. and you don't have to buy the entire cake you can just get a slice of what you want. We get these treats for special occasions like anniversaries or birthdays. I returned to Salem after being gone for 18 years. I was excited to find Konditorei still open, as it was a favorite after a movie or party hangout. Also came to lunch with the ladies. The German Chocolate cake was my favorite! lots of coconut on the top, sides and inner layers. NOT anymore! the quality of ingredients seems to be inferior to the past as well as the size and coconut --nothing on the sides, so thin inside that I couldn't even taste it. The size was so small that it cut off most of the top where the most coconut should have been. So disappointing! I ate several bits and asked for a container to take the rest. I doubt if I will bother eating it. The waitress said new owners had taken over two years ago --I don't know if they skimped on quality or it occurred over the years. Too bad, I will never go back. We had the raspberry cheesecake which was amazing and my boyfriend had never tried cheesecake before and he thought so too. We also ordered the champagne cake which was also good, very interesting flavor. And my boyfriend also had a lemon bar which he said was alright. The portions of the slices are very good for the price they charge, I think it's around $6.25, and their selection of desserts is very extensive. Worst service ever! There were two other couples eating when we came in and we're seated. It took fifteen minutes of waiting before I got up from my table and went to ask if somebody was interested in taking my order. When I got up and walked to the register all three of the servers were standing near the kitchen gabbing about their day. We almost left. First let me say that I love to bake, I come from a family of bakers, I feel qualified to fairly judge baked goods and this place falls short, really short. I've had several cakes from here, usually purchased by someone else and brought to a work or social gathering and each one I've had is awful. It's the driest cake in the world. This happened two years ago. My wife stopped in to order our wedding cake and we bought a couple desserts as well. Fast forward to wedding day. I ask my mom to pick up the cake. They demand payment, saying we did not pay them AND the cake wasn't ready. We had ordered a blueberry cheesecake and so they had to send an employee out to buy canned blueberries to top off the cake. We had already paid, so after the wedding, we called and asked them to refund my mother since we had already paid for the cake. The manger was extremely rude and said that if it had been paid for then the employee who took the order would have made a note of it. I told her that her employee had forgotten, then. She said her employees don't make mistakes like that. Only after I provided a bank statement did she finally relent, but still treated us as criminals and yelled at me, "Well SOMEONE IS GETTING A FREE CAKE!" After that, we thought the situation was done and over with. NOPE. My mother didn't get her refund. So I called and asked what was up. The lady again started accusing me of lying since she knew she refunded it. My mom provided her a bank statement showing it wasn't refunded. During this whole ordeal, we had reminded the manager several times that it was a visa debit card and told her which credit union it was for. She had refunded a Mastercard for a different institution, so she had refunded the wrong person. This whole process took about two weeks, all because the employee forgot to make a note and the manager treated us as liars. I haven't returned and will never return again. Family and friends no longer go there either as a result of the manager's behavior. The owner should be aware of how rude and insanely disorganized the person is who is running the business. read more

I'm new to Salem, so my partner's family (Oregonians) insisted that I had to try the Konditorei. My partner and I went there during early afternoon, so it was not packed, but most of the tables were occupied- a good sign that I have come to the right place. I ordered the special: Italian sausage quiche, with black coffee and a piece of the German chocolate cake to end it all. The quiche was tasty! It lacked a bit of flavor, but was definitely home made with quality ingredients. The coffee was disappointing, though. It was sour and tasted old, or like it had been brewed into a pot that had a lot of old coffee residue. Disclaimer: I am a coffee snob, so take my review of the coffee with a grain of salt- everyone has different tastes for their coffee. The crowning jewel of this experience? Why, the cake of course! The German chocolate cake was moist and delicious with the perfect icing-to-cake ratio. The wait staff were friendly, but they were all teenagers who seemed a bit disorganized and lacking a supervising adult of some sort. My native German husband and I drove up from Corvallis at the strong encouragement of his colleagues. They wanted his take on the cakes / pastries. We ate lunch there also. The food was pretty standard but we left most of the peppered kettle chips on our plates. We bought 6 different slices of cake to go. Most of the cakes weren't what we would consider authentic - the cakes were generally way too sweet. We may have come in with too high of expectations that it would be more Austrian or German style. It may be a northern German thing but virtually all the cakes and pastries we would eat when we are back in Germany are not nearly as sweet as they are here. Real whipped cream rules over butter cream and many cakes have real fresh fruit filling (not syrupy canned pie filling). But Frank's apple strudel is similar to what the hubby's grandmother used to make. We still gave a good rating despite the chips and over-sweet desserts. I have to disagree with others - the coffee was good and the server was attentive. So... our search for a great German pastry / cake shop in Oregon continues. One thing that we have observed since we have moved here - the truly best foods we have eaten haven't come from restaurants but from pot lucks. Oregonians make their food with heart. read more
