We happened upon Giannfranco's Trattoria driving to San Diego. What a gem! Growing up in SF I've ate ate so many delicious italian restaurants to compare with. At Giannfranco's the spinach raviolis were the best I've ever had. So light and delicate. The tiramisus cake was not heavy with rum. The cake and whip cream were so elegant and airy it melted in you mouth. No flavor over powered the other flavor. Cesare salad was delicious, as was the angel hair pasta. Ingredients are all fresh which added to the flavor of the food. The chef was taught by his Italian grandmother and great grandmother. Service is not speedy but it's worth the wait. It was a warm summer evening so we ate outside in the patio enjoying some wine. Everything was perfect! read more

We were all starving after a long day in Santa Barbara. Decided to stop here and refuel before our trip back to LA. We were the first table seated in the outside patio. Nice ambiance and the waiter was polite throughout. My daughter and I ordered the Fra Diavolo, my wife ordered the Positano and my son ordered the Spaghetti and Meatballs. My son's portion was adequate, but the remaining portions were downright paltry and the sauce was mediocre. Rule #1: Never chince on the pasta! Rule #2: If you're going to chince, the sauce has to be superior! Am I right folks! The owner became defensive when I brought this to his attention, claiming I was the first to ever complain about portion size. Judging from the other customer comments I read here after the fact, this was clearly not the case. I think it's time to hang up the apron my friend. I do give props to the waiter for his professionalism and he got a nice tip in turn. read more

What a pleasant restaurant. The garden setting is beautiful. Plenty of heaters for the chilly evenings. The service was impeccable. The food is yummy. My husband and I shared a burrata salad, we could have eaten two. The ambience was so relaxing and with a bottle of wine. Aah. For our entrees I had the spinach ravioli, my husband had the penne pasta, it was a little spicy for his taste but, he finished it. We opted for a couple of cappuccinos for desert. Highly recommend! We went for lunch and were not disappointed. First, this place is immaculate. One of the cleanest restaurants from entrance, dining room patio to restrooms so clean. The food is home cooking, made with love Italian. The meatballs are like nanas. The olives are flavorful and unique. The salad was crunchy fresh and delicious. The service is the best part. Hands down, Giannfrancos Trattoria in Carpinteria, is our favorite authentic Italian restaurant in Santa Barbara County. Family-owned and operated for 12 years. The perfect restaurant for lunch or dinner. The dining room is beautiful. They also have a beautifully appointed outdoor garden patio for quiet dining. Good wine collection and local beers on tap. Pay attention to the daily specials. Its obvious a lot of thought and hard work goes into preparing all the menu choices. We highly recommend Giannfranco's. You won't be disappointed. Hubby had Spinach Ravioli and there was only 4 pieces. I had Shrimp Pasta and it was also on the smaller portion. Didn't have linguine and clams on the menu, but offered to make. Was good. An amazing amount of clams. Great atmosphere and good food. Wow!!! I come to visit my sister every year the day after Christmas until New Year's Day. Every year I have to listen to my sister yap about how great this restaurant is. We are usually so busy, because my sister always has a party for New Years Eve, and a lot of our time is just preparing food for said party. She and I are both great cooks, (me baking) her, Main meal. We love it. I've just gotten pretty tired of her bragging about this place because we've never had time to go while I'm here. Well this year she and Lynn surprised me and took me there for my Christmas present. Oh My GOODNESS!!! I can't believe how great it was. It was the first time I've been to an Italian restaurant that had so many dishes that I've never heard of. And....THEY DON't MAKE PIZZA! I had the Positano which was a a hand rolled pasta with a superb white wine and lemon sauce that was full of seafood. Scallops, clams, mussels, and shrimp. My sister ordered the special which was Penne pasta with mushroom, shrimp, spinach and maybe some things I don't remember with an amazing truffle butter sauce. We had agreed to share 50-50, but we both relented and refused to do so. It was AWESOME and I know that from now on this will be my Christmas gift because NOW I KNOW! (And you do too)! read more

Great things about this place: 1. Gnocchi (19$) was very tasty and so was the lobster ravioli (23$). Side of the Italian sausages was ok (5$) 2. Cutest atmosphere in the patio - great for date night and girls night! 3. Despite all the talk about poor service, we received decent service all night 4. Bread was limited (which may be a bad thing for many people but good for me cause I tend to over eat the bread and become too full to enjoy the entree) Not so great things: 1. Very expensive so don't come here till payday ;) 2. Portions are on the smaller side but was still very filling for me 3. Was not a a fan of the dessert (10$) we picked (gluten free organic almond crusted cheesecake) BUT the fiancé actually loved it so maybe it's a taste bud thing. This place has a very charming back patio. The food and Pinot Grigio were good, but the service could have been better. There is only 1 other table occupied at that time, but our server didn't really check on us as often as he should and he seemed like he didn't want to be there which didn't give us that good experience. I think it would have been better if our server was more hospitable. I love this place! This is a small fine dining experience. The owners wife was absolutely wonderful she made us feel very welcomed and the food was very tasteful and delicious. My husband and I enjoyed the food, we only wish there was more on our plate! We started with a Carpaccio which was a delicious and light raw filet mignon salad with arugula, tomatoes and capers. Then I had the Positano which was a seafood pasta dish (that lemon cream sauce was "lick the plate clean" good but I didn't do it because I had to be a lady ). My girlfriend and I ordered the Insalata di Amalfi & the Piccolino. The Insalata Di Amalfi was drenched in dressing, the Shrimp were decent, the calamari was good, but the scallops were not so great. My girlfriend's Piccolino was an angel hair pasta dish that was super small for a $16 dish, the sauce was subpar and tasted bland. Nothing spectacular about our dishes and definitely not worth the price for the food quality you get. The service was also very slow when we were one of three parties in the entire restaurant. In conclusion this establishment is overpriced, the food is bland, and service is slow... I will definitely not be returning to this establishment. read more

Upscale for a beach town, the pasta dishes are very good - the Caesar salad was among the top two or three best I've ever had, the service is friendly and efficient. We liked the atmosphere, it's much like a trattoria in Italy. I would have given it 5 stars but for three things: The bread was not as good as some we've had in SB. They served two small pieces and when the bill came we noticed they had charged a dollar for two more. We shared the Caesar salad and they added a $5.00 charge on the bill! We asked for anchovies on the Caesar and there was a $3.00 charge! An $8.00 surcharge is pretty steep, especially since there was no mention of it on the menu. No one objects to paying for a really nice meal, but it seemed a little tacky to add charges as a surprise. All in all it was a lovely dinner, we'll go again. read more
