So, I am basing this review on two separate visits 5 years apart. Our first encounter with Gil's was blissful. I felt that the breakfast fare was artisanal, smart and delicious and warranted the price. My next visit was two days ago. This is the best mid-priced meal I've had in my 6+ months living in Montana. Counter service that was friendly and informative, and absolutely delicious, reasonably priced food. We ordered the lamb kebab salad and the SOP pizza. The salad was just the right size to share as an app, but maybe a bit small for an entree. The lamb was perfectly seasoned and the whole dish was just right. We added and egg to the pizza, and though the counter guy said he could finish one, I would suggest they are right for two to share. The ingredients were noticeably fresh, and it was the best pizza I've had at a restaurant in 4 years. I have eaten at Gils several times during a couple trips to Livingston. I am shocked by the '3-star' rating as I thought this is a place that is doing everything right! The food is incredible and shows technique and wonderful flavor. The atmosphere reminds me of a European style cafe, with the heart of Montana. The service is casual, friendly, and detailed. I had to read a few reviews to see who gave Gil's less than 5 stars, because I like knowing who the crazy people are in town One person said the coffee is no better than Denny's, which is an absurd statement. The coffee great. Another person said the pizza is greasy. First of all, it is pizza, lady. Have you ever been to New York?? Secondly, the pizza is not even greasy. It is cooked in this great stone oven that makes the crust a little bit charred and it is bomb. Now that we got that out of the way, let's move on to the food. Gil's Goods serves fresh baguettes daily around 1 or 2pm I believe and they're amazing fresh out of the oven. One suggestion to Gil's Goods is have your chefs create a dill dipping sauce for the baguettes and charge a few bucks more. That would be amazing... But I digress, moving on to other food items. My first pizza was white sauce, chicken, bacon, red onion, light spinach. Very good. I would give it a 9/10. Next up, the prime rib sandwich. The prime rib itself, although brown and not pink, had good flavor. The onions and peppers were fresh and we'll seasoned. The roll was a bit dry when combined with meat that was not particularly juicy. I would suggest a rib juice dipping sauce to accompany the sandwich, French dip style. O[r add lettuce, tomato, may and subtract the onions and peppers. Pink prime rib would be nice too even if it isn't hot. Overall I give a 6.5/10 Juevos Rancheos - This dish lands right up there with the delicious stone fire pizza. Very, very good. The Cluck chicken rolled up in the little tortillas, with cheese and black beans was a great foundation. These are combined with fried eggs, hashbrowns, ranchers sauce, and much more goodness. Now, enjoying the crisp, beautiful, and inspirational end of Summer weather we were blessed with on this resplendent day, I was walking barefoot. As I often do because not only is it good for the human body in regards to physical body mechanics, but it's refreshing and good to just naturally step out into the world. Now I have attended Gil's Goods at many different times on many different days, barefoot as there is no written rule saying I cannot do so and it is not against the law. But on THIS day, when I was really looking forward to fantastically made huevos rancheros and fresh orange juice, it was different. I already ordered and was sitting down with friends. My food gets here, and this waitress just looks at me and exclaims rudely, "Dude where are your shoes?? This is a RESTAURANT" One, this is Gil's Goods, and two, you have no written rule stating I can't, I've done my research bitch. And she forced me to go leave and get shoes before I could eat my huevos rancheros, which would then be cold. I felt embarrassed, attacked, and wanted to slap the bitch. And the huevos rancheros sucked. Basically, I'm not going back for breakfast. But if I ever do in the future, I'm not wearing shoes, bitch. read more

I drop in every trip to Livingston, and I've been here twice this trip. I enjoy the food, which as one reviewer put is "hip". I'm ok with bussing my own table too. The staff is really good and interacts with my 8 year old enthusiastically. There was one waitress though that treated me as though my French was too provincial and I was in Paris. If you're happy to take my cash, put up with me if I call it a cheese steak, don't make me repeat it 3 times and force me conform to calling it by the full, concocted name on the menu. This "tourist" returns often to the area he was born and raised and I frequent those businesses that show me the hospitality this area is known for. I will be back again for the food, atmosphere, and staff. And I will still recommend the place to those I know who also come to the area. Hopefully that one waitress improves enough to earn the fifth star back. read more

Mu husband loved the lamb kebab salad. Tomato soup was excellent. Staff is a bit too cool for school- like you're doing them a favor eating there. I'd prefer table service for lunch vs having to get up to order, the get up to get your food, drinks, etc. They charged me a higher price than posted for my glass of wine and basically told me to deal with it. This little café is located in downtown Livingston, MT on the main drag across from the train depot. There's an array of choices from salads, pizza, sandwiches and burgers. It's counter service and then the food is brought to the table. My sister and I both ordered burgers and fries. Burgers are made with ground sirloin and are substantial----very flavorful, juicy, and served on an onion roll. They come with a side of fries---crispy, not greasy and they were so good we asked for a box so we could enjoy them later(which we did!) The atmosphere of this place is very casual with several tables inside and a few outside. It was fun to watch pizza dough being expertly tossed and my sister informed me that the pizzas here were indeed delicious! You serve yourself and it just felt like an akward atmosphere because we were sitting on the side walk. It is a small place not good for big groups like we had.
