Tucked into the side of your average street in Berkeley is the best pizza we've had in the Bay Area. GIOIA is serving up some VERY good pizza out of what feels like a hole in the wall. Beware that parking may be hard to find as it's right off the street although there is a lot just down the road. The inside is very bare bones, which in this case is a good sign. The smell of the oven and dough just hits you once you step in and it's fantastic. Ordering was quick and easy and the slices are priced a bit high but for the quality of pizza we'd say it was worth it. We got some classic slices and also their fungi slice. From ordering to eating it took about 5-10 minutes despite a few people ahead of us so it was relatively quick. And now time to try it... man was it good. It's clearly a good representation of NY style. The crust is firm and crunchy but the pizza has a nice flop to it. The cheese is tasty with a good sauce under it too. The fungi also popped with flavor from the mushrooms, parsley, and olive oil; just a great series of slices. The best place to eat it is probably the bench seating they have outside but it may be full as a heads up. As far as we see it, GIOIA is a must stop in Berkeley. It came very highly recommended and was devoured in less than 5 minutes. We almost wish we didn't have plans to eat later that day because we could've eaten 2 more slices each then and there. This is as close to true NYC style pizza as you can get outside of NYC.

Lots of premade pizzas to choose from

4++ small pizza spot located in Berkeley. This place is seriously not much larger or wider than the counter you order at. The folks here are friendly and they have lots of premade slices that you can choose from. This place is conducive for takeout or grab and go. It's a great neighborhood spot where you can walk inside or order from the window I think. I wasn't super hungry so I just got the mushroom slice. Nice crisp and great flavor. My brother took me here when we were visiting the area with him and my sister-in-law. They let me know that this place was one of their old haunts. Just a really great spot to grab a quick bite for a reasonable price.

Previous review was 4 stars but I'm upping that to 5. I'm rating Gioia on the pizza. I love it. Love it. I think it's improved. And I love the style which is the New York style way. You order your slices which are pre made pies. Then they heat them in the oven which makes them hot and crispy. Several topping choices to choose. No indoor seating. Other than a bench there's really no outdoor seating either. But the pizza is so good. And it's nice, shady outside. Decent amount of street parking.

Delicious pizza! It was easy to place an online order on their website. I also needed to modify my pick up time and easily got a hold of them when I called and everything was smooth. We got the Pepperoni, Asparagus, and Julian pizzas, the chopped salad and cannolis. Everything was SO GOOD. Will definitely be one of our new go-to's when we're in the Berkeley area.

The crust was amazing. Best in the bay imo. Could have been cooked a little longer for my taste. I didnt particularly like the cheese blend either. Sausage was good paired well with pickled jalapeños. Sauce was the most lacking. I prefer a sweet or spicy sauce. The sauce was very bland. Slices might be better

Today we tried the cannolis and I was blown away by the deliciousness! I've had their pizza (equally good) a few times now but had never tried their cannolis. The last time I had a great cannoli was from Mike's Pastry in Boston so I wasn't sure Berkeley could live up to that. I'm happy to say that the cannoli was cheesy and creamy in a crisp shell. Yum!

This is one of my family's favorite pizza spots in the Bay Area and I couldn't agree more! There's always a line whenever I go with plenty of people buying their delicious slices. My personal favorites are the Fungi and Julian but honestly you really can't go wrong with any of their pies. The crust has a nice crisp texture and the flavors are so unique that you can't really have anywhere else. Highly recommend to those in Berkeley or SF!!

Delays, deliberate misdirection, miscommunication, and cold pizza, all for the tidy sum of $36 and change. Thanks, Goia.

The line does get pretty long on busy nights after big events like concerts, but it tends to move pretty fast. I've tried their Artichoke, Margherita, and Vodka slices which are all solid choices. Each of their slices are huge and great for the price of ~$8! Personally, I find their pizzas to be a bit on the heavier side with their generous amounts of sauce, but great if you're in the mood for some mouth-watering greasy saucy pizza. They operate on a grab n go service, but there are seats and a few standing tables outside. Overall, definitely a pizza spot worth going to when you're in Berkeley!

For one it brings back so many good memories, Blondie's always makes me happy. The second reason is they now have 100% BEEF PEPERONI! You heard me, 100% BEEF PEPPERONI! For some people that's not a big deal. For someone who hasn't eaten pork their whole life & always has to avoid getting pepperoni on their pizza, its a HUGE freaking deal. I love, love, love when the rare occasion happens that I get to enjoy BEEF PEPPERONI on my pizza. OK besides that, the pizza is amazing. I was literally closing my eyes and in my happy place the whole time. Now for those that never had BEEF PEPPERONI, please go try it. It is so much higher quality than pork pepperoni, so I've been told. I plan to make many more trips in the near future, thats how excited it made me. By the way I loved the cheese just as much, yum yummy. Pro tip: parking is hard, obviously, downtown Berkeley and all. So either walk, Uber, find parking, take the bus, or do as I do and tag team it and drop off a friend to go order for the whole car and drive around until they are ready to be picked up. Do what you have to, just get there. Now go enjoy yourself, you can thank me later.

The location gives it a lively downtown vibe with lots of energy from the surrounding area and nearby students. The reservation and check-in process was very smooth. The staff were incredibly courteous, welcoming, and helpful throughout the visit. I actually arrived about 30 minutes earlier than my reservation time, and they were kind enough to seat us early, which was a really nice touch. One thing I really like about this place is that they update their dishes a few times a year, so every visit can feel a little different and exciting. The menu has great variety, especially when it comes to pizza styles as you can choose from New York, Sicilian, Detroit, and Grandma-style pizzas, and the pricing is very straightforward for all the sizes they serve. The pizza was perfectly cooked and tasted great. They also allow you to customize your pizza by adding or removing ingredients, which makes it very convenient for everyone to choose based on their liking. And they add toppings with open-heart. The pasta was also excellent. We ordered the Peperoncino pasta, and it tasted amazing. The garlic flavor and breadcrumbs were really the highlight and brought out the authentic character of the spaghetti. Another big plus is that they have plenty of vegetarian options, making it easy for different dietary preferences. The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable for what they serve. Food arrived quickly, and the service from the servers and staff was great throughout the visit. The restaurant also has plenty of space and handles reservations well. The atmosphere is lively with lots of people around and students from the nearby university, which adds to the downtown Berkeley energy. A little more upbeat music could add even more charm to the place. Overall, this is a place I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Berkeley.
