We opted for chicken parm and homemade raviolis with crab meat in lobster sauce as well as the beef carpaccio for the appetizer. Absolutely loved the entrees. The beef carpaccio had a large amount of lime which I never had it like that so if you don't like lime skip the carpaccio but my friend loves lime and loved it! Ambience- super cute, intimate low light for dinner and very good for couple or nice family meal Service- IMPECCABLE, the most attentive service I had in miami hands down. The irony that the only time they were slightly less attentive was when we were done and needed the check! Last night turned into one of those classic Miami evenings where nostalgia, friendship, and food all collided in the best possible way. We found ourselves at Giovanni's Restaurant on 87th Avenue and 8th Street... tucked away in the back of that shopping center where every Cuban from Miami over 55 immediately says, "Wait... wasn't that where Club De Las Americas used to be?" Or for some of us true veterans of the struggle... "Oye, that's where the dollar movie theater was!" The minute we walked in to celebrate our dear friend Esther's birthday with Quinn, Iris, Betty, JUAN, and yours truly, I knew this wasn't going to be one of those "let's grab a quick bite" situations. No, no, no. This was serious Italian business. The kind where the waiter approaches the table with such elegance you suddenly sit up straighter and stop pronouncing mozzarella like a Hialeah mechanic and say " Muzzza -rella" The food presentation? Bellísimo. Every plate looked like it was auditioning for an Italian cooking show on PBS. You almost felt guilty touching it. Almost. Because after the first bite, all Cuban manners disappeared immediately. Forks were flying. Bread was being sacrificed into sauces. Conversations stopped for those sacred few seconds where everybody at the table quietly realizes: "Coño... this place is GOOD." And let me tell you something... authentic Italian food has a way of making Cubans emotional. We already speak with our hands, but after two glasses of wine and homemade pasta, suddenly everybody becomes a philosopher. One minute we're talking about Esther's birthday and the next minute JUAN is explaining life like he's in a scene from The Godfather. The service was impeccable from beginning to end. Attentive without hovering, elegant without being pretentious. The kind of service Miami used to have more of back in the glory days when people dressed up to go out and valet parking alone made you feel important at Los Violines What made the night special wasn't just the excellent food. It was that beautiful Miami feeling of rediscovering a place hidden in plain sight for years. We've all driven past that shopping center a thousand times carrying memories of discos, dollar theaters, first dates, and Saturday nights from another era... never realizing tucked in the back was this wonderful little Italian gem waiting for us. Giovanni's is a mediumish sized restaurant off 8st and 85ave. Nice decor with white tablecloths and a dark interior. The sign outside says Italian and Argentinian but the menu was mostly Italian. This was a lunch on a Tuesday, and I was surprised at how busy it was considering its almost hidden location. Always a good sign. The servers were wonderful even though our food took a while. They immediately provided bread and water and got drink orders. I really appreciated the attentiveness. The calamari appetizer was ok but far from great. The special of the day was a steak with a dark mushroom sauce and mash which was really delicious. The chicken Frances was tasty and came with a side of angel hair. They also include a salad or soup with the entree. We each ordered a big glass (gigantic, really) of sangria which was very good. For dessert, we shared a tiramisu which was too cakey and didn't really resemble a tiramisu but it was still ok. I really enjoyed the meal and again, I have to mention the incredible servers. My best friend and I found this hidden gem on Yelp, called, and were lucky enough to get a reservation on a Friday night. When we arrived we were greeted and sat with no wait. There was a talented pianist playing live music which I absolutely loved. Our waiter was friendly and had great recommendations. We ordered burrata for the appetizer, it was fresh and light. We ordered the Mezzaluna Di Granchio which is ravioli stuffed with crab meat in a creamy lobster sauce and it was incredible. We also ordered one of the specials. It was a red snapper with parmesan risotto which was the star of the evening. That fish was so succulent and perfectly seasoned. We had to leave room for dessert and ordered a peach crème brûlée. It was different than your typical crème brûlée with tiny pieces of peach within. We were then offered a dessert wine which is said to be a digestive aid. Will have to give dining in one more try but unsure about the aglio e olio and fish francese, where the fish was tasty but both pastas had nothing going for them and a bit too plain. Not good for the high price. Maybe the francese would be better with capellini instead of fettuccine? And the aglio e olio tasted a bit too green rather than traditional aglio e olio. This hidden treasure is an Italian-Cuban fusion treat. My favorite is the shrimp francaise, large plump, lightly battered, light wine, butter sauce, delish. House salad is one of my favorites in town (they add diced strawberries), cozy atmosphere, great service. On Friday January 16 we went for an early dinner 6:30. With reservations but when we arrived the place was almost empty but that changed by the time we left it was packed. We got Arrancini (rice balls) as an appetizer nice, I have never had them stuffed with beef. My wife got her favorite Veal Picatta with the 3 mushroom risotto. Ordered the tiramisu it was ok but not delicious. The service was kind of ghetto. I wouldn't go back simply because of the service. All I ordered was a tiramisu and it took me over 20 minutes to get there and my order still wasn't ready and the the cashier/front attendant got snappy with me. She went back there as if she was going to go check on my order and then came back and didn't say anything to me. Lol. When I asked her about the eta of my order that's when she got snappy.
