Popular, old school ice cream stand right by the Glenview Metra stop. Tons of flavors and offerings, but I had a hard time reading the menu, as it seemed like one jumbled list of words and prices. One recommendation - don't go if you want to relax outside with your ice cream at a nearby table - they don't have any. I opted for a 'candy blast' shake with my typical Dairy Queen combo of chocolate ice cream and Reese's (excuse me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard), but they guy screwed up and gave me vanilla. The teenagers that work in here need an adult manager. Cashier dropped the spoon for one of my ice creams picked it off the ground and still shoved it in the ice cream. And the kid making my ice cream kept eating it. I told him I saw him eating that ice cream he just handed me and he said he had to taste it for consistency. My wife and I took our baby girl for a ride after dinner the other night to try and get the little one to pass out. So, naturally we needed a desert destination that was far enough away to allow the kid to go nigh nigh :) Glenview Dairy Bar pops in my head and we set off! Now, I'm a Northbrook guy, so I have been to Dairy Bar as a kid a few times, but us Northbrook kids usually stuck to the local DQ or Baskin Robbins. Well I have to say that we should have come here more often, and I am jealous of Glenview and their cute little dairy bar. For one, the prices are way cheaper. You can add a lot more different flavors and toppings that you can't at DQ/31 Flavors. Oh yeah, and as the self procalimed "Mr. Local Business", this place is as local as it gets so I support 100%. I grew up on this place. I used to love coming here as a kid and getting soft serve cone or slushie. You can get your cone about 4,000 ways including dipped or covered in anything and it's really smooth and flavorful. When I was a kid my favorite part about coming here was putting pennies on the railroad tracks, so the Metra would smash them. Wow was this awesome and both extremely dangerous in retrospect. What's a trip home to Glenview without some love from the Glenview Dairy Bar? "Chuck and Janelle welcome you" is what the sign on the front of this little ice cream stand says, and most of the time, Chuck and Janelle (or one of their kids) are there to say hello. I made my stop to say hi to Chuck and Janelle on my first day home (and two times after that). I've been coming to the Dairy Bar since I was oh, about 5. I've almost always gotten the same thing (in varying sizes between the kiddie cone and the medium that I now prefer): twist dipped in butterscotch. Ok, if you like soft serve, this is the place to go. The ice cream is so creamy and good. Not too sweet, just right. There's like 15 flavors of dip toppings, but I always stick with the butterscotch. The Dairy Bar also has shakes, sundaes, slushies, and other types of frozen goodies. During the day, they also offer hot dogs and fries. If the weather is just right, on a summer evening, you'll find a line of folks waiting to get their frozen treats. The Dairy Bar brings back many memories for me, and in Glenview, it can't be beat. This is the only place that makes Coke shakes! This place brings back so many memories - going to the summer reading program across the street just so I can get a free cone, studying for spring finals in high school, etc. The Dairy Bar has not changed one bit since the 90s. It employs local high school students for the summer and is run by a family. While the ice cream creations are nothing special, it is extremely comforting. Glenview Dairy Bar serves two kinds of soft serve ice cream, one 5% fat and the other fat free. The ice creams come in two flavors, vanilla and chocolate (you can also get half and half). We tried the 5% fat vanilla ice cream mixed with "fresh" strawberries (which looked more like boiled frozen strawberries), and it was so-so. Other people were ordering milkshakes and sundaes, which suggests to me that one needs the help of other ingredients to create something worth eating, since the plain ice cream isn't memorable. If it's a weekend, sunny, and hot expect to wait a little bit. The line moves quickly so nothing to worry about. There's a very small private parking lot so expect to park on the side of the road. A tradition. For me Dairy Bar is the taste of Summer. Well, the Dairy Bar and chlorine if you want me to be completely truthful. I've been coming here since I was a kid. The only thing I can remember changing in the past twenty-some odd years is that there's a fence between the Dairy Bar and the railroad track. No more flattening pennies on the Metra line. Besides that it's consistently delicious. Most of my friends stick to pretty simple things like vanilla cones dipped in chocolate. I'm the more adventurous one, trying things like butterscotch (probably my favorite) or the blue raspberry (a recent fling). Somehow this place is 95% fat free, but trust me, even if it was 95% fat they'd still get me to come. A great way to end a busy day, a great way to end a lazy day, and a place we used to go to before any of our midnight movie premiers. This place is up there with The Works - if you live in the area and haven't tried it, then you're doing something wrong. Stop reading and go try it. I've been trying a lot of different ice cream places in search for the perfect dipped cone. I think I may have found it at the Dairy Bar! I've always heard rave reviews about the historic place, but it was only about a week or two ago that I tried it. What separates this cone from the others is their variety - they have a few versions of dipped chocolate, including a dark chocolate version which was absolutely fabulous. Dairy Bar is the closest thing to a historic landmark in Glenview. Oh... we have the Grove? Whatever. Dairy Bar is located right in the middle of downtown Glenview, across from the Library and right next to the Metra station. At any given time, there will be a line to get ice cream here. You'll see all types of people: families, couples, business men who just got off the train, etc. And more often than not, you will run into someone you know in line. They serve ice cream. What's special about their ice cream? I don't think it's "the best ice cream I've ever had in my life," but it is good. And the best part is that it's cheap too! Don't be confused, while it is cheap, the quality doesn't suffer. I always go for a vanilla cone dipped in rainbow sprinkles for just a couple bucks. Parking is hit or miss. You probably won't be able to find a spot in the designated parking lot, but there are plenty of spaces around the library and by the park. If you're in town for the summer, and the Midwestern sun is killing you, just head to Dairy Bar, stand in line while saying "Hey" to anyone you may see, and wait for the best, cheapest ice cream in Glenview. read more

This, if anything, is a Glenview institution, and there aren't that many of those left in Glenview. When you drive up and you think, wow, that line is long for JUST ice cream...try to realize that the line is probably shorter than the one at Costco and the reward is waaay more rewarding. There are a myriad of choices here (you wonder how they fit all that in that shack), and there is so much to love. They have ice cream pretty much anyway you like it, dipped in funky flavors, in a shake, in a sundae (Baseball helmet if you like), in a float, with orange sherbert, etc, etc. They also have slushes, pop, some side foods. My usual diet breakers here: chocolate/hot fudge sundae and my newfound love the peanut buddy parfait. It's layers of chocolate, spanish peanuts and vanilla ice cream. If you are not a fan of spanish peanuts (I have to admit it does make the sundae a little too texturess-ish), chopped peanuts will do as well. Great pick me up if you need a sugar rush before/after a library visit that is across the street. (Got me to study in the summer when I was young!) I went to the Glenview Dairy Bar this past weekend. The girls behind the counter were very friendly. The prices were really inexpensive and there was plenty of parking. After reading the reviews on here I wanted to try a dreamsicle twist (vanilla and orange sherbet) cone dipped in dark chocolate. The orange sherbet is a melty, runny mess - sort of like a slushie. The vanilla and dark chocolate parts, however, were great. This place reminds me so much of an ice cream stand, back in Ohio, that I used to go to when I was a kid. The Dairy Bar is USUALLY good but on Memorial Day evening, NOT! After waiting in line over 30 minutes, we have a girl helping us who doesn't know what flavor Frace' they have but most importantly, doesn't know how to make a simple chocolate soda. Has to ask someone, still doesn't get it correct, wipes cup all the way up to ice cream that was hanging over side of cup WITH THE DIRTIEST RAG I have ever seen. & then proceeds to hand over a soda without a straw. What a waste of time and money...one sip and I threw it away as it was only seltzer water.
