Why in the world would they charge two different prices for your dish being cold versus warmed up?? How many people would want a cold dish anyway, especially Korean food?? Well not me. So I paid the extra $2 or whatever to have it warm. Very disappointing. I had the beef bulgogi with veggies and an egg. The veggies was the best part. The rice was burnt and stuck to the bottom. And the beef was not really beef from what I could tell. It was like strands and tiny pieces of meat to call it beef. Because they cooked it right in that stoneware, I couldn't even touch my food for at least ten minutes without burning myself. The price is too high and the food lacks quality. So we were kind of concluding that main Richmond area food is bit on the bland side and we wanted authentic Korean food. So we found this spot, that was about 20 min drive, but with pretty good reviews. It's a small diner-looking type of place. It had one main cook who seems to have the palate for Korean food because my SoonDooBoo tasted as I expected. They have some interesting items on this menu which some of us tried, the beef wrap (yes, Korean beef in tortilla wrap with your choices of veggies) and also beef tacos. Bachelor lunch today. Decided to try Gogi BiBimBap after spotting them nearby on Yelp. (If you're donating blood at the Innsbrook center, this place is about 6 minutes away down Broad Street.) When I pulled into the parking lot, I discovered a bunch of different restaurants, but with unwavering resolve, I entered the unassuming storefront. The two guys behind the counter were hopping- the restaurant was moderately busy, it being noon. I stood drooling at the counter as they prepared bowl after bowl of delicious looking and smelling food. Korean isn't a cuisine with which I have a lot of experience, but on reflection I ordered a Bulgogi Box. Spicy pork bulgogi was an excellent choice- spicy and flavourful without gratuitous heat, it paired well with the glutinous and slightly nutty purple pearl rice. The kimchi is spot on, nicely hot, moderately crisp. Two shrimp Mandoo (fried dumplings, like Korean gyoza) were fried to perfection; hot, not greasy, with a delicate shrimp flavour. I opted not to get a drink because I have a thermos of high octane coffee in the car (shoutout to #DeathWishCoffee!), but they have a full selection of fountain drinks, Korean beer, bottled soft drinks, etc.. Half the people who were here while I was were Korean- always a good sign when you feature an ethnic cuisine and those guys show up. For the 40 minutes I was here, there were always seats available, but not many! And the adorable kids singing K-pop covers of American Christmas music added a delightfully surreal touch. Lunch came to $10.38; a drink would have brought it up a bit. The Bulgogi Box by itself is enough to satisfy, but you can make it a combo with 2 additional sides and a medium drink for $4. Next time I think I'll try the beef bulgogi fusion tacos- 3 for $7 sounds like a good buy! read more

Seems to be a one man show place. I placed my order thru door dash pick up at 5:08 pm with a pick up time of 5:40-5:45. I got here at 5:40 my order was not ready. He still had to make two bowls for me which took over 20 mins because he had to prepare the food for another customer in front of me. All while Another lady is waiting in line for her order to be taken. Mind you, I was driving from Williamsburg to charlottesville and decided to pick up dinner on the way. I'm a huge fan of Japanese food, but Korean isn't something I have a lot of experience with. I'm also a huge fan of "build your own bowl" type places, like Chipotle. So when you tell me that there is a place right down the street that combines both into an inexpensive and fast meal, of course I'm going to try it. --Food: So, how it works. You pick a bowl (hot or cold), pick a rice (white, brown, or purple), pick 5 vegetable ingredients ranging from things like cucumbers to carrots to mushrooms to about 20 other things, you pick a protein (beef, pork, chicken, tofu, spicy if you like), an egg type, and then they throw it all together with some seasonings and flair. All together, it's called Bibimbap. So far I've had two bowls from there, one cold and one hot (dol sot). My first bowl was white rice, beef, cucumbers, shitake mushrooms, wood ear mushrooms, beat sprouts, onions, and a fried egg. This one was really good, and once you stir up the warm rice and protein, it isn't cold so much as room temperature, and is delicious. The meat is BBQ'd and has a nice flavor to it. The second time I ordered a hot bowl, which comes in exactly what it sounds like, a heated ceramic bowl. I ordered essentially the same thing just with spicy pork instead of beef and a sunny side egg instead of fried. If you're on the fence about whether you should go hot or cold, go hot. It's just exciting to watch your food cook and sizzle in front of you, and it's only a couple dollars extra. I also ordered an order of kimbap the first time, which seems like a sushi roll, just with Korean BBQ instead of fish. It was also really good, but I was too stuffed to comfortably eat it all. The actual ingredients taste fresh and there are so many topping choices. There are also fusion type dishes that use these ingredients like tacos or sandwiches. I say I'll try them, but the actual bowls are so damn delicious, I probably never will. --Cost: The cold bowls are around $8 and the hot ones $10. Everything is really quite filling though, so $10 to fill you up is very fair. The cold bowl price is pretty comparable to a burrito bowl from Chipotle. --Service: Everybody here is awesome. I know that's a blanket statement, and perhaps because I'm in my mid-20's, about where it seems like most of the staff is, but they all just seem like awesome people. The first time we ate there we didn't exactly know how we were supposed to go about mixing a bowl of bibimbap, so the person gladly gave us a tutorial on when to add things, how much, and how to go about eating it to optimize deliciousness. Cool guys. --Atmosphere: It's a nice interior. Nothing note worthy, but very inviting and comfortable. --Overall: Huge fan. Possibly one of my favorite places to grab a bite to eat now in the West End. Service is fast, food tastes great, it's not quite fast food like McDonalds but it's also not a high class sit down place. When people say it's like a Korean BBQ Rice Bowl Chipotle, they're spot on. If one opened in the business district where I work, I would undoubtedly be a regular. (Make it happen, Gogi!) Gogi Bibimbap gets my full approval. read more

Either the portions are way small or the food way bland -- not Gogi BiBimBap! Got delivery last night and was really pleased with my food being super warm, the portion on a $10 spicy pork bulgogi being enough for 2 meals AND, this is no small thing -- the kimchi was the good stuff. If I had to describe it, I guess I would liken it to a Korean Chipotle, only better. DH and I were out running errands and wanted a quick bite. He had been here before and loved it. So I was anxious to give it a try. I ordered a regular bowl. With it, I had my choice of rice, up to 5 vegetables (there are tons to choose from, including Gwyneth's favorite of kale), choice of a protein (I choose the beef), and to top it off, a fried or sunny side up egg (I chose sunny side up). Once it is assembled, it is dressed with their house sauces and served up with a smile. It was a hearty serving and I had a tough time finishing it for lunch. There were three different house-made sauces provided on the table (some hot, some not), but I did not think my bowl needed it. The beef was tender and full of flavor on its own. Good food at a good price. I hope Gogi does well. Afterwards, you can go next door to Country-Style Donuts for dessert! read more

Got take out while staying at a hotel in the area. We got the tteokbokki, a beef bibimbap, seafood soondubu, and spicy pork kimbap. The kimbap was my favorite and both the tteokbokki and soondubu were great as well. The seafood flavor was very strong and fresh. The bibimbap is more like a bibimbap inspired "bowl" rather than an actual bibimbap, which was strange considering how on point the other dishes were. The veggies were very bland, I wish they had quick pickled them or had some kind of light sauce. Overall very satisfied with the price, portions, and taste! read more

It's like a Korean version of Subway. Loads of vegetable options to choose from served over your choice of rice. Served in a hot bowl (Dol Sot) with a soft fried egg on top. The sauces are great too, I like my food very spicy and their hot sauce does the trick. I was would personally stick with the traditional Bol Goki as far as your meat, I've tried them all and this is the best one. Staff is super helpful and happy to see you. This place can get super busy around lunch time and seating is limited. I always try to leave one critique about any place I review, and I guess here I would say the only off thing is the decor. They have different sized tables, different types of chairs, etc. It'd a bit all over the place. It doesn't bother me and it shouldn't bother you. Holy cow. I have not been specific enough when I say "feed me and tell me I'm pretty." This is what I actually want. Gogi may be my new favorite fast casual restaurant. The food was very, very good and reasonably priced, the restaurant is relaxed, clean, and bright, and the owner is incredibly friendly. I could immediately tell that there must be a loyal customer base, because the owner seemed to know every person who walked through the door. Even though he was working all on his own, taking order, cooking, and serving at the same time, he was still all smiles and pleasantly chatted with all of us. I was unsure what I wanted since I'm relatively new to Korean food, and he suggested a bibimbap bowl. You select your fillings from behind the counter and he cooks them to order. I ordered purple pearl rice, bean sprouts, carrots, romaine, shittaki mushrooms, cucumber, chicken bulgogi, and a fried egg. My friend ordered a bulgogi box with spicy pork, purple rice, kimchi, and pork mandoo. We also ordered a side of shrimp mandoo to share. Even though it was busy our food was ready in minutes, with my bowl served in a sizzling skillet. Everything was fantastic. The chicken was so tender and juicy, the veggies and rice were perfectly cooked and super flavorful, and the mandoo was sweet, crispy perfection. The food is good, but the strongest memory I have from here is the service. They weren't unkind, but there was a sense of urgency when we were ordering, instead of a friendliness & there was only a mom and a son behind us in line. I was also thrown off, by they have pamphlets advertising to get their app and get rewards through it. You get a free plate of dumplings when you sign up. The pamphlet worked on me & I got the app. When I told this to the cashier, he simply responded with, "we're not doing the rewards system at this time." What's one free plate of dumplings going to hurt the restaurant versus and unhappy customer? Why would you leave the pamphlets out if you're not doing the rewards system anymore? Regarding food, the bibimbap could have used more flavor. There's Asian zing sauce, soy sauce? and gochujang at each table for customers to use. The japchae was good in taste, but small in portion size. I didn't have a bad experience (the food was good, the restaurant clean, but the soda fountain was out of service and there were just crates of drinks stacked in the open, not adding to the aesthetic) but I would choose other fast food places in the area, before coming back to Gogi. read more

We ordered: Sweet Spicy Garlic Chicken Wings - these were a bit dry but packed full of flavor Suduboon jjigae - very good flavor, but there was too much tofu and not enough broth for my taste! Bento boxes - both the bulgogi and spicy pork was good. The mandoos (dumplings) that came with it were delicious as well. The shrimp ones remind me of the shumais from Sushi King. This is a pretty decent place in the West End to get my Korean fix when I don't want to head to Midlothian. The service was quick and friendly, the food was reasonably priced. First time I have been here. I was next door getting glasses and hungry so decided to walk over. The food was amazing I started with the beef Bulgogi box with white rice, Kimchi, and pork dumplings. I spoke with Min for a while and between dinner and conversation it was really a great end to my day.
