I love this place. The best sushi in Petaluma. The service is excellent, the presentation is excellent, and the sushi is fresh. I really like the wait staff. My water glass was never empty and I was never looking for a waitress or a waiter to help us. We were seated immediately and given menus. We we're waited on immediately and the food came out very quickly. They are always very friendly and appreciative of our business. This was a great survival place for Sushi in Petaluma. Amazing food. The Bento Boxes was excellent. I only wish they had better English speaking staff who could understand my order but who cares about language when they know how to make great Sushi. We are all big sushi fans in our family and of the several sushi restaurants that we've tried in Petaluma this was the best one. Innovative rolls, a decent size and priced normally for that quality according to our experience. Everybody liked it and we are pretty spoiled where this type of food is concerned. We came in later in the evening Friday night (9:15ish...?) I'll start off the review by saying the sushi was excellent. Very fresh and high quality ingredients. However, service...horrible. My boyfriend had never tried sushi before, and was hesitant, so he went with a Ribeye. The steak came with a sauce on it, which he specifically asked to be put on the side. His steak came out about 10-15 minutes before everyone else's food, and it was COVERED in the sauce. He mentioned it to the server that he didn't want sauce ... The server said "Oh, I forgot to tell the kitchen..." He didn't offer to fix the situation, and said, "Well the sauce is really good, I'm sure you'll like it..." Thanks for your opinion dude, but he specifically asked for it on the side. It was a thinner cut Rib-eye, and one of the more expensive things on the menu, he didn't want it covered in sauce...nor you trying to convince him otherwise. Plus, the server should have known better to course the items properly. My boyfriend wanted to be polite and wait to eat his food until the rest of us got ours, but ours didn't come for another 15 min...so we all coerced him to eat his food so it wouldn't get cold. I ordered a house salad, which never came out. At the end of the meal, I asked him to make sure it wasn't on the bill, and he said "Oh it never came out...so no it's not..." I know it never came out, but he obviously didn't order it, nor did he come to check on our food once it was out. And he didn't apologize for the mistake. Perhaps these are maybe some items I could over look if it had been busy...but there was maybe 2-3 other tables if that in the restaurant. So there was no excuse to not check on us during the service, or even attempt to remedy the issues. All in all, you obviously pay for the food in quality and NOT the service here. Doubt I'll be back. When I'm paying $16+ for one roll of sushi, I expect much higher quality service. read more

Was in the mood for some good sashimi while in Petaluma and my contractor recommended this spot. I was iffy about this spot because I really didn't know what was actually good in the area. My last few Yelp referrals have been steering me wrong, so you can see why I have some trust issue. This place look very upscale, nice sushi spot in the area. The entrees were well priced and the food sounded good. I ordered the Sashimi platter and was so glad that I did. I am very particular about my fish and this place was on point. The fish was fresh, flavorful and cut to the perfect thickness. I have been on a hunt to find my favorite sushi spot in various city and I think i found the spot in Petaluma. My co workers order the chicken entree and enjoyed it too. Don't pass on the fish at this place. Must try! read more

For a sushi place in a shopping center staffed by non japanese it's not bad. Not traditional Japanese food service but a clean contemporary place with over priced saki & rolls. Service was hesitant,unsure and slow. Tempura was light & well done but tempura sauce could not be tasted at all. Manager ( who used to be chef I am assuming) was wearing acid washed jeans & sneakers and a unsmiling Noh face. Actually all the waitstaff was unsmiling & contributed to a very depressed feeling in restraraunt. Probably will not go back even though my rolls were ok. read more

I don't Yelp often. I took my teenage son here for the first time tonight. We were one of three tables. We waited nearly 10 minutes for a drink order to be taken. Our server was wearing a shirt that showed her belly. I'm not a prude- but it seems unsanitary and against a health code. She touched the whole brim of my soup bowl with her fingers- gross- and I had to ask for a spoon. Every dish was either very over or very under salted.Our plates were chipped. I had to ask for ice tea refill. At the prices they charge, there should be a higher standard all around. I've been in the hospitality industry for over 20 years- I am very forgiving and understanding- hence my lack of reviews on here. But this experience was so sub par I'll never return. There's a lot of sushi places in town and Gohan is by far the best! Best miso soup I've ever had!! Every dish is awesome from their rolls, to udon, to teriyaki chicken. My favorite roll is the veggie ten roll, it's absolutely phenomenal! Highly recommend giving this place a try! read more

What happened??? Gohan has gone downhill since the last time we were there. We had dinner on a sunday afternoon (4 adults and one infant). There were approx 10 customers in the restaurant, including us, so it was a relatively slow... That being said, we had to wait around 10 minutes just to get water and menus, at which point we already knew what we wanted to drink. A couple of us ordered Lagunitas lil sumpin' which appeared to be on tap. A few minutes after ordering, the waitress comes back to tell us that they're out of Lagunitas lil sumpin...ok, we think no big deal, then we proceed to just order Lagunitas IPA...a couple of minutes later, waitress again comes back and tells us they're out of IPA. Normally, this wouldn't be an issue but then it dawns on me, that if I ran the restaurant, I could literally walk about 1000 feet to Lagunitas brewery and get a case or two to hold my restaurant over until we're able to get new kegs. Instead of that, I get told by the waitress that I could alternatively order a bud light or sapporo. On to our food - we had a baby with us, so we wanted to get some food in her tummy before all of the sushi came out for the grown-ups, so we ordered steamed veggies and a couple of pieces of shrimp. The waitress nods and acts like she has our baby order down - goes and puts it in the system, and we end up getting served tempura shrimp and veggies...totally not what we ordered, but okay no big deal we'll ask her to correct it. She comes back to our table and looks annoyed at US that the order was messed up, as if we're the bad guys for relaying it to her. Excuse me? After the snafu re: steamedvs tempura shrimp, we finally get to order our sushi. For the most part we just order standard rolls (nothing customized or too fancy). Our sushi comes out, but literally only half of it comes out - we look over at the sushi chef who's making sushi, and hes making some rolls that very clearly we did not order. I don't even know how the waitress didm't recognize that half our sushi order was missing! If it was one roll missing, ok i'd excuse it but literally 1/2 our order was missing! I used to love gohan, but the service goes beyond sucking, in even the most reasonable things. Go to O! Sushi diagonally across the street - theyre cheaper, provide much better service and have yet to get an order wrong (even a takeout order over the phone). read more

I just came from Gohan tonight and was extremely disappointed. It should not take 45 minutes to make four rolls sushi and if you are going to spend $60 on it, the avocado should be bright green rather than something left out for a few hours. Gas station sushi has better looking avocado than this place. I used to praise this place for its tasty sushi and now it looks like their accountant told the owner to take an ax to the budget, causing sushi portion sizes to shrink while raising the price. As a business man, my advice to the owner is to not make decisions potentially detrimental to the business. You will lose regulars just like you did tonight. Next sushi craving will be met with a trip to San Francisco to restaurants that serve quality sushi and would recommend this place to Chef Ramsey for a Kitchen Nightmares reboot. read more

First impression- fishy smell. Second impression- no one to great us at door. Third impression- a long wait to get initial service even though restaurant was less than 1/2 full on a Sunday at 5:30. We had the only female server that night. She took too long to great us, she rolled her eyes at us when we commented on the wait, she avoided eye contact when we needed something and she didn't check on us during the meal. When we got the bill the gratuity was already added for our party of 6. No wonder she could care less! We are normally good tippers so we would've given her up to 20% if she was any good. In fact when we looked around, none of the servers looked happy to be there and people were unhappily waiting at the door to be helped. There were no "adults" around who appeared to be management. It was also more expensive than other good Japanese restaurants. Not worth the drive back to Petaluma when there is Sushiko in Rohnert Park. read more

Probably the best sushi I have ever had. Everything is fresh, especially the fish. Gohan's is a little out of the way for Marin folks but definitely worth the drive. If you're there for lunch, grab the bento box or the dragon roll with tempura. Just writing this review makes me want to take the 45 minute drive to eat at Gohan's! read more

I've been to Gohan twice for lunch and it was very good both times. The fish was very fresh and the menu was good, although it offered fewer options than I usually prefer. Typically, I prefer sushi restaurants that have a menu full of creative and diverse combinations of fish, sauces, vegetables and other ingredients, which is somewhat accomplished here, just perhaps not to the extent that I would get really excited about. The ambiance and decor are somewhat plain but it is very clean. The best part of Gohan, in my opinion is the excellent service provided by everyone from the hostess, all the way up to the owner, who has personally checked in with me both times I was there. All of the staff there are very friendly and attentive and I will continue to visit there regularly for lunch. read more

This is our favorite sushi place in Petaluma. We used to go to Hiro's until the quality went downhill. I love sitting at the bar at Gohan and letting the chefs pick what we order. We have enjoyed everything we have had here. My personal favorite is the Chef Steve roll. Delicious! My only reason for giving it four stars rather than 5 is that service can be spotty. They never have enough servers. If you sit at a table, expect slow service. Try sitting at the bar for best service. read more

This is a great, clean, fresh, flavorful Sushi Restaurant! I love sushi, but am extremely picky on where I will eat it..... veryyyyyy picky. I was introduced to Gohan by a friend, and am happy to report I was pleasantly surprised! Fish extremely fresh? check! Great atmosphere and friendly, attentive staff? check! Excellent variety of rolls? check! A good amount of non-sushi items? check! Excellent sauces? check! Great-large selection of Sake? check! Here's what I love... they have a great sashimi platter, I LOVE the Sea Breeze salad.. which is a large portion of wonderfully seasoned seaweed salad topped w/ caviar and scrumptuous crab meat...sooo freaking good! Although they don't seem to have it often these days.. if you can get your hands on it when they do, the green-tea cheesecake is SUPERB! I can honestly say, this is one of the best sushi restaurants up North of the Gate that I have found, and I've been to several! read more

One of the very few good restaurants (in my opinion) in Petaluma....I would say almost comparable to San Francisco sushi restaurants. I have been here 4 times and each time, the fish is super fresh. The rolls have the right amount rice - not a ton so it feels like you are just eating rice, and the service is good. Rolls are also creative. If you like spicy, our favorite is the ring of fire. Ambience - lots of families when I have been so it's fine if you have kids. Also very clean and bright....very inviting place. read more

This place gets a thumbs down for lying about their closing times. I've driven up 3 times at 2:10pm to see them turn the open sign around to closed sign and they're supposed to be open to 2:30pm. So on our way back from a little concert at Lagunitas we stopped by nthe little spice, seaweed, and rice (fantastic). Harmachi Kama, I have been eating for years. Gohan grilled or broiled theirs perfectly. The Lee the owner gives me some finely grated ginger and says put it in the sauce. Never had it like this before and I have eaten well over 100 of these. The ginger gave it this wonderful freshness to the tuna collar. This is so so good. Thanks for a wonderful dinner Gohan and if I am ever in the area this is the first place I will stop by. read more

Have always loved Gohan is there new owners?.....had dinner with my other half...ordered a 6 pieces of Maguro 4 of Shiro Maguro and a KO Roll. We started with Saki and cucumber and sea breeze salads. The service was SO SLOW!!! Got the Shiro Maguro when we were done with everything else. We sent it back. The server should spend less time drinking Saki in the kitchen (or at least do it out of the eyesight of the customers) and more time with the diners. Very disappointing experience. read more

update to review in 2008. my wife and i visited Gohan on a Sunday evening for dinner. half full restaurant. it was a very disappointing meal, which sucks because we have customarily had excellent food and warm service. tempura prawns: soggy, lukewarm, and way too much batter. not light and crispy. totally disappointing. halibut and scallop nigiri: delicious. perfect size, not too much fish. ring of fire roll: way too much unagi sauce, which covered the plate and soaked the small greens in the middle of the bowl. my first instinct when seeing so much sauce on any dish (other than pasta) is that they're trying to mask something unsavory. hawaiian poke: amazing. light, perfect amount of dressing, avocados were fresh, and the fish wonderful and in perfect bite-size cuts. service: off. the food took a long time to get to us, and the poke came way later than everything else without any word from the waitress who, incidentally, never checked with us about the food once we were served. a positive, i noticed they changed the menu a bit and have them laminated as opposed to the stained paper ones they previously used. good move. i am a BIG fan of Gohan, have visited them as a "go to" great meal, and will continue to patronize as long as it picks up the next visit, but this experience was not a good one. read more

After moving from sf we were really craving sushi and looking to venture out into our new town. After checking yelp we decided on Gohan. There was a large party and they were a bit understaffed for dinner on a weekend, which I get it. It happens. But our table we were seated at was awkwardly placed in the walkway leading to the bathroom, we didn't want to complain but everytime someone walked by they would bump our table. So we asked to move no biggie, then after about 30 mins they finally take our order. Our miso finally came out after 45 mins and then another 30 mins for our two rolls. I wish I could say it was worth the wait but it wasn't, I easily could have gone to safeway to pick up the same quality of sushi. One star because I didn't get food poisoning and another star because the waitress was nice. read more
