Golden duck has always been our go to Chinese restaurant and take out for as long as we can remember! Ordered minute chicken cake noodle, beef with bitter melon and 2xs beef vegetable stir-fry for take out. ETA stated was 15 mins. In general Chinese food is usually fast. I'm sure our food was ready, however we arrived later, Like 30 mins later to pick it up. Owner of the restaurant was very rude and not welcoming. He said we "took too long to come get our food." He didn't even say thank you, or enjoy your meal or anything. He threw a fit when I asked for a receipt. And didn't even give me an itemized one. Total for 3 items came out to over $100 ! I know inflation is bad, but that's really over priced for 4 dishes. And the amount of food given was so skimped. We also asked for no additional MSG, since my mother is allergic, but the food tasted like it had way more than the normal Amount! This is one of local favorite eating places, however, their dishes are always salty but has a lot of flavors. During holidays and festivals dishes didn't cook well enough you can still eat the raw vegetables, recently ate there two out of three dishes that has veggies are raw. So next time I will think again before going there during holidays and festivals, of cause service is limited when it is so crowded with table come after tables. I remember Golden Duck when they were in the McCully area way before they moved to their current location offering all the local favorites and it seems like many still flock over to get their fix here. Though they do provide a decent amount of parking right behind the restaurant some street parking either free on Alder if you're lucky or metered parking on S King Street...regardless we find our way here. This night was no different as I was I need something for dinner and I wasn't in the mood for something too much or heavy as it was a long work day which then it was soup for me...some hot soup. Won Ton Mein...a local thing this light and refreshing hot soup packed and filled in a large container with won tons, char siu, and veggies which was more than enough to take care of the exhaust hunger needs...more so mom stole a few sips. Let me tell you late night seems to be their busy time as the restaurant was a full house with many still pouring in, the vibe is nice here as I walked in knowing what I was was simple and just a single item I waited patiently as they were busy fulfilling items that are ready to go to finally order after waiting for about five minutes, only to have it ready in just a few. The Chinese food here is decent. All the workers here speak Cantonese, but the food is still localized. It's what my parents like to call American Chinese food. I got the lunch plate which has sweet & sour spareribs, pot roast pork, pork chop suey, crispy won ton and fried rice ($1 upgrade from white rice). It was ok. It had good flavoring. The pot roast pork was tough. I had to keep chewing and chewing before I could swallow. The fried rice was definitely worth it for a dollar more. The sweet & sour spareribs were good. The end of an ERA. My family has been long time patrons since the Kāhala location and followed them to to the south King store. For over 30 years we have used them for take out, parties, get-togethers, and the occasional drop by to grab something to eat if we're in the area. They were Mom's "go to"- always reliable with the best crispy gau gee on the island. Well that's not the case anymore. Had dinner there last night with my wife and it was SHOCKING BAD. Like the place had flipped a switch, either with new cooks who aren't trained, and maybe new owners who are feeling stingy over tariffs?? We ordered 3 things crispy gau gee, beef chow fun, and steamed fish with vegetables. The gau gee never made it to the table, the beef chow fun was 10% beef, 20%, noodle and 70% bean sprout, and the steamed fish was a straight up disaster. Strips of cod here and there lost in a pile of cabbage and sauce.....and here is where I cringe: dare I say frozen mixed vegetables?!?!. I was embarrassed for these guys and pissed off at the same time. Dude never came to check in on us (remember.... we ordered gau gee bro?) So I go to pay the bill and it's our dude ringing me up.....he overcharges me by including the missing gau gee, which I remind him that it never made it to the table. "Oh.....sorry" he mumbles without looking up and makes the adjustment on the bill. Now Golden Duck has been pretty much ridden on their reputation solid Cantonese / local food with generous portions and good value for the money. but it's clear that those days are gone. My now dearly departed Mom would have had a brain aneurysm if she had seen last night's effort with dinner, probably would have given the old owners a proper Chinese style verbal lashing about how embarrassing that food was, how poorly it was executed, and how she had been as patron for decades now now she gets this? Sad really. Only time will tell if they can continue their takeout business. Miss enough gau gee orders there and that store phone will ring less and less. So that is the last time we eat at Golden Duck....EVER. Not even takeout. Sorry I'm not Sorry...my family has spent a small fortune over the decades at this establishment and this devolved into quite possibly the WORST Chinese food I've EVER had. Paid over $18.00 for a pound of Charsiu and at least 70% of it was fat! Normally I love the food here and go there relatively often but as far as the Charsiu unacceptable! I do realize it's pork and expect some fat but not a pound of it! Please try to do better! read more

The black bean beef chow fun with broccoli was bland and did not taste good. I could not eat it. The rest of the dishes were good. I've been on the lookout for some good Peking spareribs (AKA Capital pork chops) on island that can rival those of the CA, Bay Area and the Capital Pork Chop sizzling platter at Golden Duck might be the closest I'll be able to find. The presentation of the sizzling platter gets 5 stars but the pork is a bit fatty and the batter could stand to be a bit crispier. Otherwise, it does the trick. I also ordered what I thought was supposed to be 100% vegetarian dish called Jai but after digging into the dish, I noticed what looked like little bits of char siu pork. Fortunately, I'm not on any strict vegetarian diet but for those who are, this can be slightly misleading especially when the description of the Jai dish doesn't mention any meat component. After all was said and done, it was tasty enough. Service is prompt and the right amount of friendliness. Parking lot is easily accessible and convenient for pickup. I like to come here to pick up take out. It's quick and convenient. Parking is easy. Prices are reasonable. Everything is pretty good here, but the salt pepper pork chop is really tasty. Hands down the best Chinese cuisine I've ever tried. The tables were filled with customers who have been coming here long before it moved from McCully. We had scallop soup, roast duck, seafood vegetables noodles, fried wontons and Ohn Choy with Bean Curd Sauce. Each dish really brought out the flavors of the ingredients masterfully and uniquely. I love their cold ginger chicken, black bean spareribs and crust gau gee cake noodle! Those are my go to foods for comfort! Parking is the only thing that minus out a star it's so limited. Happy Lunar New Year! I couldn't wait for Chinese cuisine at Mom's house. She's cooking Jai (Monk's Food), stuffed duck, mochi rice, etc. for Sunday, January 22, 2023 (Chinese New Year). I decided to get takeout from Golden Duck, an old school restaurant in Honolulu, Hawaii. I think our family had gone there a long time ago with my dad. I also had lunch at Golden Duck when I used to work at the Detention Home next door. Well... I drove down Alder Street and the Detention Home is gone! (It relocated to Kapolei.) Gosh... There's a condominium building in its place. Anyway, parking is free at Golden Duck in their private lot. Enter from Alder Street, right after the restaurant. Service can improve. I called about four times to order takeout, but no one answered the phone. However, when I was waiting for my order, other customers came in to pick up their phone orders! Huh??? I placed my order with a young man. He was task oriented. He said it would be about ten minutes. Fine. I was expecting the place to be packed, but it wasn't. Maybe because I was relatively early on Chinese New Year's Eve. They open at 10:30am and it was about 11am... When my order was ready, the young man called out: "sweet sour cabbage". I stepped forward. I guess my favorite dish is kind of different or unpopular? LOL! I happily drove home with the delicious food fragrance in my car. Some gravy had spilled out into the cardboard box, but it didn't leak onto my car seats - yay! I opened each box and took photos of my Jai, Sweet sour cabbage with squid, and minute chicken cake noodle! Everything tasted great - probably because I was starving. I did notice that the Jai wasn't vegetarian because it had some rehydrated dried oysters in it. The sweet sour cabbage wasn't too tart - and the gravy wasn't too thick nor too watered down! In addition to their regular menu items, they have daily lunch or meal specials. The only difference to the specials compared to the menu is the price with the exception of their "Chop Sui Plate" which is a combination plate. They have 2 choices, difference being pork or chicken 2. Parking plentiful; entrance from King Street 3. The dressing for their Chinese chicken salad is good. 4. Portions are decent sized; I always have a to go box when I leave But lately and as of my last experience dining there, I think something happened where they have a new cook because the broth to the wor wun tun mein was junk. Golden Duck is a hidden gem. I heard about this place for years and finally dined in. The bittermelon with beef is served at many Chinese restaurants, but Golden Duck serves the best! The bittermelon was cooked to perfection; not overly cooked so there was some crunch to it. The server suggested "mild" black bean sauce because I also ordered the asparagus with pork, which also had black bean sauce. Both were delicious! We also had the dessert with almond float, but the fruit cocktail was spoiled/sour so I returned it. The server gave us another bowl with a newly opened can of fruits. Delicious! Plenty of free parking. The dining area was clean and spacious. There were many folks picking up take out orders. It was crowded with dine-ins and take outs. Price for lunch and dinner plates was very good. Serving portions for the dinner plates was huge and we ended up taking the leftovers home. Therefore, price point was excellent for the serving size and delicious cuisine. It's more economical to eat at Golden Duck than it is to eat from fast food establishments. Golden Duck continues to have a loyal following. It was really busy on Sunday night. I was lucky to snag the last parking stall. The food is good, not great. But there is a lot of it. Portion sizes are generous! My mom and I shared the roasted duck and ginger chicken Sunday special plate and had leftovers. There was wilted won bok (napa cabbage) between the meat and rice, which was a nice addition. Roasted duck was bony, like how duck is. Nice lacquer w/ hint of 5-spice. Ginger chicken was good, but my cousin makes it better (his had smaller, more uniform knife cuts for the sauce and moister chicken). The gau gee wasn't really crispy. They use a thicker pi or something. But super generous w/ the filling! Atmosphere is brightly lit and bustling in the way of busy Chinese restaurants. You locals are going to love this place because, dang there was so much food. I swear they used four cake noodles (extra charge) and the box was overflowing. See how huge the gaugee are in the picture. The gaugee was huge and fat, the biggest I ever had. I think I could only eat about a quarter of it. This would make a good family meal style dinner with other Foods. The only thing is that I am allergic to seafood and it contained two shrimp which luckily my dog got. My daughter requested that we go to Golden Duck. She enjoys their noodle dishes. They now offer a dine in as an option, but we ordered our food to go. We did have to wait awhile as we did not order the food via phone prior to arriving. I would recommend this if possible, so you don't have to wait. It was quite busy, and several people came in to pick up their phone orders while we were there. A few people opted to eat in. My daughter always enjoys the cake noodle so we ordered the chicken with cake noodle, and the chicken chow fun, and also the crispy gau gee. The food was very good, hot and freshly made. We order combination plates about $15 each, pricey! Ginger chicken with char siu pork over rice and the other of charsiu and roast pork over chow mein. Total about $36 , ordered extra ginger sauce Only mistake was the cashier mistakenly did not make what I ordered. Instead of duck she wrote it down as roast pork.
